Hello chat nation. Here's our Turn 4 answers today to some controversial questions for Dega. Is it bloodthirsty, as Junior says? Are you tired of guys riding in the back? Should Kurt be penalized? Check it out: http://tinyurl.com/9h72rj4
Love Booty Barker, why is he in a wheelchair?
Bootie was paralyzed in a car accident his senior year of high school.
Hi Terry, I'm a big Kurt fan but am disappointed on how he's acting, it seems something is not right up there. When will Nascar say enough is enough and can he finish the rest of the year without doing something stupid.
The Busch boys do have a knack for finding controversy. It's just the way they are. As for Sunday's incident, I think it may have been blown out of proportion because it was Kurt as opposed to someone else.
Guys, one sugestion, Try to keep your questions a short.
Any word on what might replace Montreal on the NW schedule and please don't say they'll just give another date to an intermediate Cup track (like they've done with Chicago and Kentucky to replace Nashville).
Not sure, but I think it terrible that NASCAR couldn't work it out with the promoters to stay in Montreal. One of the best races in the series and NASCASR's only international event.
Dale's post race comments about not wanting to race at Daytona-Dega and finding another job bring up the interesting question of what happens to "Jr Nation" when 38 year old Dale retires? Will they become Kyle Busch fans or retire too?
They definitely won't become KyBu fans. Drivers come and go, as do all pro athletes. The fans find someone else to root for.
Dale Sr flipped at Datona and drove his car back to the pits, ignoring the safety crews, doing exactly the same think Kurt did after getting dumped at Dega so why they big deal about Kurt?
That's a very fair point. In this case, they say things were falling off the car and safety officials were endangered. But I agree it's overblown. However, Kurt should have left his helmet on.
Hi Terry, I seem to remember Dale Jr. drinking champagne in Dega victory lane with a pile of torn up race cars on the track and he wasn't whining about the racing. What has changed?
He didn't win, that's what.
Hey Terry, with Tony Stewart running his mouth last year about how he wasn't gonna tolerate blocking does Stewart think he's the only driver who's allowed to block?
No, and I Tony took the high road and said it was his fault. But honestly, it's no one fault. It's the last lap and everyone is going for it.
what is nascar going to do to kurt for what happened when he got back in his car at dega sunday?
NASCAR officials are reviewing he incident and probably will make a decision today. It boils down to whether they feel Kurt put anyone in danger.
Kurt's actions weren't "blown out of proportion". They were correct for a driver that for multiple times has endangered people's safety.
I guess I didn't see his entire drive back to the pits. I'm not sure who was truly in danger. If safety officials and people on pit road were in endangered, NASCAR won't let it slide.
Since Smoke has threaten almost everyone about blocking, was Sunday his way of getting back at everyone in one fell swoop?
No. He thought he had a chance to win the race and didn't realize how fast Waltrip was coming up behind him.
How does this grab you for a solution to Dega- Five 30 lap heats with the top 4 from each heat in a 20 lap showdown for the win. The heat qualifiers can sit out to protect their cars. There will still be all out racing at the end, only with 20 cars.
Having 20 cars left might be optimistic. but heat races at the plate tracks makes sense now since everyone is playing possum for most of the race. But it won't happen.
Do you think NASCAR will penalize Stewart for dangerous driving, blocking and endangering peope's safety?
No. It's just you typical lap-lap craziness at Dega.
Terry if kurt does get suspended who is furniture row gonna get to drive that car until hes off of the suspension?
I doubt they've even considered that possiblity yet, but there are plenty of good drivers to step in.
Seahawks #1 defense in the NFL!
But they'll get a real test this week against New England.
Some estimates say Stewart tore up $7.8 Million in equipment. Should NASCAR order SHR to compensate the teams for thier losses?
Obviously Ron, you are a Smoke hater. He was racing to try to win with half a lap to go. No penalty is coming.
put 6 cyl engines in the cars and no plates on them
They were run slower, but everyone still would run together with the gas to the floorboard. And the manufacturers aren't building competely different engines for four races.
Were you impressed with Kyle Busch keeping his cool for the entering too fast penalty finishing 3rd while Dale got another pit road penalty, lost his cool and dumped to 11th in points?
No. Dale has a lot more to race for at this point than Kyle does. And Junior also was running near the front at the end until the big crash.
I will try to be concise: When does talent stop excusing behavior?
Frank, that's true in every sport. If your talented and a team things you a can help them win, you get a lot of chances no matter how crazy you are.
I don't like the fact that Kenseth wins and Gordan is finishing in top 3's and they can't make up ground. Everybody likes a good comeback story. Should they change how the Chase points a rewarded?
It needs to change in some fashion. My idea is no points if you finish worse than 20th, based on a 25 point system.
Do you think Danica leaving indycar to go to go to nascar full time had a big reason that the rating was really down this year in indycar?
No. I don't think any one person makes much difference.
how about Matt kenseth?! Agree or disagree that he's become the best restrictor plate racer in NASCAR? Too bad he's got no shot at the championship. Will he ever win another championship? Oh and great turn four!
Thanks Matt. Kenseth wil have a shot at another title when he gets to JGR. As far the plate races, I think a lot of it is Roush Fenway made an all-out effort the last two years to greatly improved their plate program, and Kenseth has been the beneficiary.
what is the latest driver rumors for next year?
All the major seats are filled Dwayne. The one question mark is whether Almirola returns to the 43.
what is the latest on bayne for next year in cup?
Trevor will run full-time in NW and probably a few Cup events.
How about double headers for restrictor plate races (Daytona 500 aside)? The races are shorter creating more immediacy and there's more incentive not to wreck your car? Might not ever happen due to tradition but, could it hurt?
I'd love to see it, but it will happen when the the Astros win the World Series.
Terry, Have you heard any grumbling about the order in which NASCAR posted the race results. Just wondering how 88 finished behind 48 when replay shows he never passed him.
Yes, I've ever some complaints. It's a tough call for NASCAR. It's suppose to depend on where they were on the last scoring loop on the track before the caution, but on the last lap, you also have the rule of guys maintaining a proper pace back to the flag, which is a very subjective thing. It's a mess to figure out either way.
Do you think NASCAR will consider letting teams tweak body shape more to improve the racing at Talladega?
NASCAR plans to be more lenient with body changes next year on the new car, but they are pretty picky about the plate tracks. And I don't know know that it would change much.
Hey Terry - I thought the worse blocking incident was Kenseth on Bowyer on the second to last lap. Put him in what used to be the grass. Your thoughts?
Here's my thought on the whole blocking issue. Get rid of the yellow line rule. I think it causes more wrecks than it prevents.
Watch the Astros comment Terry ! Why do you think Carl Edwards is tanking so bad this season ?
Hard to say on Carl, but his slide has to be the surprise of the season. As for the Astros, I covered them for many year. I also grew up in the shadow of the Dome and went to hundreds of games as a kid. Saw a lot of really bad teams. But I can honesly say, their 2012 team was the worst MLB team I have ever seen.
F1 and Indy car allow 1 block then a penalty. With Stewart blocking twice in a matter of seconds do you think NASCAR needs to inact a 1 block and your out rule too?
No, and lots of guys were blocking, which is a factor of the yellow line.
Any new information on whether or not Phoenix Racing will actually close their doors next year? It seemed like a sure thing a few weeks ago, but then we didn't hear anything else. And they seemed really intent on finishing this season.
Finch plans to keep racing. He thinks Smith might be able to bring some sponsorship, but nothing is definite.
Who takes the blame for Dale's late season meltdown?
Wrecking on the last lap a Dega and free-falling in the points because of it is not a meltdown.
Should NASCAR shorten plate races? Nothing seems to happen - and many drivers hang back - until the end anyway.
NASCAR should shorten a lot of races, and have done so in some cases. But it comes down to the fact that most speedways don't want to shorten races. That would mean fewer beers and hot dogs sold.
Why do you suppose Danica says she likes racing at Daytona-Dega but Dale doesn't?
Because anyone has a chance to win.
what is the latest on aj? i seen that he was a dega talking to some teams
AJ is talking to teams, but he doesn't have a ot of options. Ficnh likes him, but said he isn't sure sponsors will go for it.
Let's just cut the preliminaries at Talladega and just bring in Russell Crowe, a few chariots and some tigers. "Are you not entertained?!" "This is not it!"
Talk about selling tickets. A remake of the Ben Hur chariot race would do it.
Terry, how you rate Kahne's championship chances going forward? Good tracks coming up for him. Thanks
I would rate Kahne as a longshot, but not completely hopeless. I really think it's a three-man race between Brad, JJ and Denny.
Does Kurt's attitude toward the media remind you of certain politicans?
No, but it reminds me of Barry Bonds.
I am curious, with the Panthers on a bye week (thank god) and the race is in Charlotte this week, how much does the NFL and NASCAR cooperate on schedules?
They try not to conflict, but sometimes it isn't possible.
Why was Stewart acting like he didn't know anything about rumors of #39 Gibson ccing for Danica when it was SHR employee Zippy who made the comments?
Because he isn't ready to talk about it.
How do you think Kyle will handle being the 3rd best driver at JGR next year?
I'm sure he doesnt look at it that way and is planning to prove that theory incorrect.
Totally agree with your take on the Astros, it was painful to watch but glad the Texans are off to a great start. Speaking of the Dome we need to re-purpose it and nobody can decide what to do with it, should it be made into a short track ?
Excellent idea. I went to midget car races in the Dome as a kid. Even old AJ participated. Well, he wasn't old then. But the dust and the fumes were a big problem. It was hard to see as the night went on.
Terry, were you in the media center when Rowdy and Jeff Gordon had their interview? I was so impressed with the obvious respect Jeff showed to his young protege Rowdy. Your thoughts?
No, Ed Hinton was a Degha for us. But Jeff Gordon is one of the classiest guys in sports.
I really hate to see how far back Jeff Gordon is, considering just how great that team has been running. Six top-3 finishes in the last seven races, and he was a top-5 car at Chicagoland. He should really be about 12 points back and could give those top-3 a run at the title.
I agree Brad, but it is what it is. The points system kills you if you have one bad finish in the Chase.
Hi Terry. What are the chances that by 2014 we'll see a road course in the chase?
Good I hope. They need to shake things up somehow. The entire schedule need some changes to spice things up and increase interest.
Your top 5 drivers and a darkhorse for charlotte
Kahne, JJ, Hamlin, Kyle and Junior. My darkhorse is Ambrose.
what is the latest on the top 35 in points for next year?
The top 35 rules is over. Thank goodness.
Do you like the Chase? And if so, why? I've never been a fan of it, and never will be.
I do. I think it adds drama in the last two months of the season. It also brings attention to teams and sponsors that would not get it otherwise. I know a lot of traditional fans dislike it, but I think it's good for the sport.
Disappointed Denny rode around. Any thoughts?
They had issues with the car Sunday that contributed to where he was running. But in general, I'm totally against drivers laying back and not really racing for 80 percent of the event. I think it cheats the fans who pay good money to see the event. And Matt Kensweth said the same thing.
I'm surprised more points aren't awarded for wins. Any chance that will change next year?
I doubt it,. but I agree on more emphasis for winning. And I applaud NASCAR for adding the wild card spots that are based on winning.
What happens first? Road course in the chase or new point system?
I'd say a road course in the Chase, but I wouldn't hold my breath on either.
Gotta run folks. Thanks for the questions. Have a great week and enjoy the Saturday night race at Charlotte. Peace.
