Chat with David Ching

David Ching
  (12:01 PM)

Hi everybody. Looks like we've got a bunch of questions in here already. Let's get moving.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the worst Georgia Bulldogs College Football team ever?

David Ching
  (12:03 PM)

I think this was a joke. But I'll go with the 1905 team that went 1-5 and lost 46-0 to Tech, 29-0 to Auburn, 39-0 to Cumberland, 35-0 to Clemson and 36-0 to Alabama. (They beat Dahlonega 16-12).

Tyler (Athens,Ga)

David Has you opinion changed about Mike Bobo after saturday?

David Ching
  (12:05 PM)

No, not really. He tried a lot of different things against South Carolina. Offensive line needs to play better. I've always said Bobo is a good OC when he's got a good O-line. That's what makes everything go.

Frank (New Jersey)

Once again, a season of hype is marred with another program stepping over us to play for bigger and better things. It's become a custom of the last 5+ years. Is it time to just accept that this Dawg program under Richt has a clear ceiling of the Capital One Bowl and that the step that other elite programs have made in the conference is not within reach? It's clear to me that his hands-off undercoaching of talent is not the way to go and it has its limitations that negatively affect fundamentals and discipline.

David Ching
  (12:07 PM)

I think that's a reasonable question after Georgia's results against the best teams in the last few years. Honestly I'm not sure what the right answer is.

Jermaine (Georgia)

i'm a GATORS FAN but live in Georgia. I wanna know why when UGA is 4-0 the fans are on top of the world but when they get beat down they tuck their tails and run or egg and tp players homes!!! SMH

David Ching
  (12:08 PM)

I think a lot of fan bases have a habit of eating their own, but that seems to particularly be the case among some Georgia fans at the first sign of bad times. I don't get it.

Jason (Chattanooga, TN)

Murray continues to struggle against the better teams and more aggressive defenses, what are the chances we could see a change at quarterback either during this season or next season?

David Ching
  (12:09 PM)

I don't think that's very likely except in case of injury this season. I'm sure it will be an open competition if he's there next year, but he would not be easy to beat.

allan (austin texas)

Good Morning! Do you believe that the Bulldogs would fire Coach Richt! All these fans that want to see the man go,do they have a replacement in mind?

David Ching
  (12:11 PM)

Under what circumstances? Does Georgia win the rest of its games? I doubt he'd be fired. Do they wind up 6-6? I feel pretty confident saying he's not going to get Al Groh'd anytime soon.

maurice young [via mobile]

Why Aaron murry dont use his legs anymore , he was more a threat then . Don't you think trying to make him stay in the pocket hurts his ability to help the Bulldogs win tough games such as the carolina game , he had plenty wholes to run. if he played the same as he did in high school or his freshmen year I believe Georgia would be No. 3 now and Carolina would be No. 14 . That extra threat would have made Carolina more cautious to rush.

David Ching
  (12:12 PM)

That could be. I think he's trying to avoid getting hurt. His running is definitely a difficult dimension to defend, but he's also taken some huge hits over the years when he does it.

allan (austin texas)

I guess that that's why they say that fan is short for fanatic! By the way, I refuse to believe in the SC hype until they do it! South Carolina always find a way to lose after a big win!

David Ching
  (12:13 PM)

Maybe so. I thought they looked pretty good last weekend, but they trailed Kentucky at halftime the week before. I guess everyone has their good weeks and bad weeks.

allan (austin texas)

I will continue to love the dawgs even here in Austin. Continue to do what you do. Have a great day!

David Ching
  (12:14 PM)

Thanks Allan.

Nate (Texas)

Good evening DawgNation! I'm proud to be alive on this great Dawg Day

David Ching
  (12:14 PM)

Lots of folks chiming in from Texas. Glad to be alive with you Nate.

jj (tx)

Not that the refs would ever skew their calls to favor Oregon, but I like how they up their pace in getting the ball to the line, ready for play at one pace for Oregon, and a completely different pace for the other teams. They should get the ball to the line at the same pace for all teams.

David Ching
  (12:15 PM)

Seems that that varies by conference. The officials actually slowed Richt's early teams down at UGA, but the league seems to be OK with its teams going super fast out of no-huddle looks now. I think it makes things more interesting when they let them do that.

Lew (Jacksonville)

Besides being physically beaten in all phases in SC loss, would you say also UGA was out-coached from top to bottom big time?

David Ching
  (12:18 PM)

Don't know that I'm in position to say with any certainty. You certainly would assume so. Georgia didn't seem to have much of an answer for what South Carolina was doing on its first two drives. And once they scored on the punt return -- and I don't think that was poor coaching. That was kind of fluky because UGA had two guys in position to make a tackle there and Sanders initially fumbling screwed up their timing -- the game was over.

feverdawg (Eustis FL)

I understand the offensive struggles, I had a feeling going into the game that the offensive line would struggle greatly with USC's defensive front. What I dont get is the defense. What is going on with the defense. Is it the lack of chemistry from suspensions, have coordinators discovered a weakness in Granthams scheme in the off season. Interested in your opinion

David Ching
  (12:20 PM)

That's a good question. They don't seem to be communicating with each other very well. Sometimes it looks a bit undisciplined. My thought would be that most of it goes back to a lack of continuity stemming from the suspensions. I guess we'll find out in the second half now that everybody's back. But it has not been very impressive thus far.

matt (carrollton, ga)

So onto the important stuff...do you think aaron murray is taking the O line for some ice cream this week?

David Ching
  (12:20 PM)

That made me laugh out loud. He's a nice kid, but I think they'll have to buy their own Ben&Jerry's this week.

Davey O'Sullivan (Memphis)

Hi David, hope all is well with you in the great state of Georgia!.....I am going to try to keep from being so blatantly negative, as it does no good. First question is, how in the heck can CMR say that the performance last Saturday wasn't flat? I only saw a couple of players make a handful of plays, otherwise it just seemed the rest were going through the motions. That's how it looked on TV Did it look or feel any doifferently at the actual game?

David Ching
  (12:21 PM)

I think he meant it wasn't a lack of effort, it was just flat out getting their butts kicked. I'll take his word for it.

Josh (Birmingham AL )

How big of a roll will Todd Gurley play in this game against Kentucky?

David Ching
  (12:22 PM)

I think he'll continue to get the most touches out of the backfield. Kid is very good. He ran tough against SC, even if he rarely had much room to operate.

Davey O'Sullivan (Memphis)

David, It seems to me when you compare the talent that UGA has to the other teams in the SEC that win games against ranked opponents, we are fairly matched up, if not more so. What is your honest take on why we seem to lose these big games in recent years?

David Ching
  (12:24 PM)

Good question. I think attention to detail is an important factor when you look back at those losses. Blown coverages, blown blocking assignments, mistakes at the worst times.

Dan (Georgia)

I get it!! It's a matter of redundancy. Look at the number of players from UGA that go to the NFL and compare that to how the program has faultered over the past 5 or 6 years.

David Ching
  (12:25 PM)

Not sure what that means.

Skeeter (Athens)

What is wrong with our defense? We return 9 returning starters and have All Americans sprinkled throughout. Suspensions are no excuse. There is something more wrong with the D.

David Ching
  (12:26 PM)

You might be right. Enlighten me. I'm all ears. It's too early in my opinion to say for sure considering how the defense hasn't played a game yet with its full lineup intact and everyone healthy.

Skeeter (Athens)

Yes, Kirby Smart!

David Ching
  (12:26 PM)

He seems to be a popular choice.

Tyler (Athens, GA)

And by trying a lot of different things you mean he ran on 3rd and 17 and had 4 downs to get 5 yards and couldn't do anything creative. Is that what you mean?

David Ching
  (12:27 PM)

How did he get to third-and-17?

Rett (Oregon)

Do you think most Dawg fans are overreacting to the loss? South Carolina still has to play @LSU and @Florida. The Chickens are not a great road team (down to UK, 17-13 over Vandy). Isn't playing in Atlanta still a good possibility?

David Ching
  (12:29 PM)

That's what fans tend to do. I get it, though. This is supposed to be a great team and they got destroyed. That's frustrating. I don't think Atlanta is out of the picture, though, no.

Tyler (Athens, GA)

Frank is right. The ceiling for this team is the Capital One Bowl and I am sick of it. Change some things around already.

David Ching
  (12:29 PM)

I think plenty of folks feel that way. I get it.

Davey O'Sullivan (Memphis)

David...crazier things have happened...what if....UGA beats UF, UF beats SC, and SC beats LSU...how can you gauge who's the better team(s)??

David Ching
  (12:30 PM)

That's a lot of what ifs. I hope we don't have to get into some kind of three-way tiebreaker scenario, but it's certainly not out of the question. Lot of games left to play, though.

nate (texas)

Its gonna be hard to fire Coach Richt because he is a great man who wins around 80% of his games even I hold a special place in my heart for him but out of 11 years we only have 2 or 3 wins vs Florida and 2 or three S.E.C. ships I dont know we'll see

David Ching
  (12:32 PM)

Let's all take a deep breath and remember the guy won 10 games last year and will most likely win at least that many this year. If that's a fireable offense, I don't want that job.

Dan (Georgia)

Really don't understand how you can still defend Bobo. His play calling is beyond bizzare at the most critical times of a game - especially the big games.

David Ching
  (12:34 PM)

I guess I'm defending him. Sometimes I wonder what he's doing, too, but Richt also thinks he's pretty good -- and I'm going to assume he knows more about offensive coaching than you or I, Dan. We really don't know what's going on in those headsets.

Keenan (Atlanta, GA)

How do you the Bulldogs will handle the crushing loss to South Carolina? Will they rebound, and push through an easier road to Atlanta? Or crumble and fall into mediocrity?

David Ching
  (12:35 PM)

I asked some of the players about that yesterday. It will be interesting to see how they perform against Kentucky and then against Florida at the end of the month. There's no reason they shouldn't be 11-1 or 10-2 at the end of this season. The rest of the schedule looks pretty manageable.

E. Robinson (Atlanta, GA)

David why are you so convinced that Mike Bobo is a good offensive coordinator. To me it looks as if he doesn't coordinate anything, just calls plays.

David Ching
  (12:38 PM)

I know the old line about stats saying whatever you want them to say, but his offenses over time have been productive. Particularly in the seasons where Georgia has fielded a strong O-line. I realize I'm not going to convince Bobo haters to like him. I'm not trying to convince you. I'm just saying I think he gets more of a bad rap than he deserves.

nate (texas)

I think with the Defense its politics because Amarlo was lights out before they forced Alec back in I don't like to get to deep into it because at the end of the day these are 17 year kids what do you think the problem was David

David Ching
  (12:39 PM)

I think they're not on the same page a lot of the time. And I like watching Herrera play, but he's not the best in pass coverage. Ogletree is a better all-around ILB. There's no question about that.

Brandon (Griffin, Ga.)

I really don't think that the poor record against ranked opponents in the last couple of years is Richt's fault completely. In the days of David Greene and D.J. Shockely Georgia was known for poised QB play especially on the road in hostile enviroments. I do not think Coach Richt has changed his approach I just believe that Murray just isn't as poised as those guys were no matter how bad he wants to be. I remember Richt saying back then that the team follows the QB and if he is calm then they will be so if he isn't, well... Your thoughts?

David Ching
  (12:42 PM)

That may be. I think you just have to make a play sometimes. When I went back and watched the game, there were between five and 10 times (when the game was still in reach) that Georgia just needed to make a play to get something going, and the play was there to be made, but someone missed a block or dropped a pass or barely overthrew a receiver. You're right, it was not a poised performance, but it wasn't just Murray in that regard. Just a bad all-around night.

Mark Holmes (Georgia)

Richt, year after year, has a top 10 recruiting class. Yet, he continues to not win the big games....There seems to be some disconnect there. Give Spurrier the same recruits and he would have already won a National Championship at USC. What do you think?

David Ching
  (12:44 PM)

I think if you ask Spurrier, the reason he's winning like he is now is that he's recruiting much better. Lattimore or Clowney would probably be the best player on UGA's roster. He convinced both of them to stay home and play at SC. The Gamecocks didn't used to get those players. Helps a good bit, doesn't it? That said, I'm not convinced that Georgia's problem is talent. You're right there.

Angela (New Orleans)

What are the chances the Bulldogs land Laremy Tunsil?

David Ching
  (12:45 PM)

Called in Kipp Adams for some help on that one. UGA appears to be in the lead because of a good relationship with him and his mom. Alabama's trying to make a push, though.

Davey O'Sullivan (Memphis)

I am a Kirby Smart fan, but would take Bill Cowher in e heartbeat if he'd coach again!!!

David Ching
  (12:45 PM)

OK.

Mark (South Carolina)

Rett, sounds like Oregon is hoping to play someone other than South Carolina

Harris (Houston, TX)

How do you think Georgia will stack up against UF in two weeks? At the beginning of the year I thought this game would be all UGA thinking Florida would be having another down year, but now I am seriously doubting our team on both offense and defense. How do you see this game playing out?

David Ching
  (12:46 PM)

Not sure. Can't say I'm entirely sold on Florida's offense, but their defense is legit. Will be interesting to see how Georgia bounces back at Kentucky next week. If they get up and rolling again, I think that game in Jacksonville will be highly entertaining.

Mark (South Carolina)

David..given the scenerio brought up by Davey O', isn't that more reason to only count In-Division games toward the Division winner? Maybe use the out-of-division record as the first tiebreaker?

David Ching
  (12:47 PM)

That would be reasonable. Would hold everyone to a more even standard since they don't all play the same non-division opponents.

Davey O'Sullivan (Memphis)

Let's everyone remember David is not on the UGA staff and try to be respectful, geesh....

David Ching
  (12:48 PM)

No big deal. I'm not really interested in defending or attacking coaches because it's not my job. People ask my opinion and I try to give it.

Harris (Houston, TX)

With all of the "Fire Richt!" and "Fire Bobo!" chants, I'm surprised more people haven't called for O-Line coach Will Friend's job. The majority of UGA's problems stem from bad O-Line play in recent years.

David Ching
  (12:50 PM)

I think Friend's actually done a better job than his predecessor. At least he's got them playing hard. That's step one. They haven't had great luck with injuries and whatnot in the last couple of years. (A. Long's back, Benedict getting hurt and transferring, Houston's ongoing situation...)

Mike (Atlanta)

This team is going to go 10-2 at worst and could go 11-1. If you told fans they could have this record before the season started, you would cheer. One bad game does not constitute a season.

David Ching
  (12:50 PM)

I understand 10-2 being a bit of a letdown considering the BCS hopes that many people harbored before the season. But you make a good point.

Doug (Silver Creek, GA)

Bobo does exactly what Mark Richt wants him to do. Take your complaints up the chain of command if you don't like it, because that's where it needs to go. And, Bobo has done it better (more points & yards per game) than Richt did when he was the OC too.

David Ching
  (12:52 PM)

I didn't follow UGA as closely when Richt called plays because I didn't cover them then. But I've seen this opinion on our message board several times from fans.

Doug (Silver Creek, GA)

If the Dawgs do win out and finish 11-1, does the fact that USCe blew them out get held against them for BCS consideration?

David Ching
  (12:52 PM)

Yes, it would. I assume you're talking about the BCS title game. If it was 11-1 and there were other 11-1 teams in consideration, it would definitely be a factor.

nate (texas)

David I have been around football since i was 7 im 30 and I realized that to win you need talent and 1 of two other things gimmick (Oregan)or dicator (Alabama) what do you think?

David Ching
  (12:54 PM)

Nah, I don't think you have to have either of those two things. Just talent. Maybe a little luck. Did LSU have a gimmick or a dictator? They won a few years back and probably had the best year last season before wetting the bed in the final game.

William (Martinez,GA)

David, What's going on with the DL? They seem to be getting manhandled by OLs that are just not that good. I'm not seeing anyone other than Jarvis get in the backfield.

David Ching
  (12:56 PM)

That's a good question. I just was writing about that for my position-by-position midseason report card that will go up later this week. I'd say they've been a big disappointment. I think the DL has accounted for half a sack so far. They've dealt with some injuries and I'm sure that was a factor, but they need to do a better job creating pressure so Grantham doesn't have to rely so heavily on blitzing.

Harris (Houston, TX)

Even though we Grantham runs a 3-4 scheme, what do you think about mixing in some 4 down lineman sets to try to stop teams from running all over us? I know we don't have tremendous depth on the D-Line but we have to do something to stop the hemorrhaging.

David Ching
  (12:58 PM)

I think he mixes it up a good bit. They're in four-lineman sets -- particularly nickel-type looks -- a lot of the time. I've seen Jenkins and Geathers both on the field at the same time some in the last couple of games. Jenkins actually played fairly well against SC, by the way.

Dan (Georgia)

David - question - Did UGA put a dedicated special teams coach in place. Just wondering, as UGA still seems to have horrible special teams coverage. Saturday was a terrible flashback to the SEC Championship from last season - the returned punt for a touchdown seemed to be the early dagger in the heart! (Very big on Collin Barber)

David Ching
  (12:58 PM)

They did not. I don't think Richt seems particularly interested in doing that.

Skeeter (Athens)

I sense a little frustration from you today. Your computer must be blowing up....

David Ching
  (1:00 PM)

Not frustrated. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm not interested in defending coaches because I'm not passionate about it one way or another like fans are. Just share my opinions when people ask.

Russell (NC)

Could it be that it isn't the x's and o's but the Jimmys and Joes?

David Ching
  (1:01 PM)

I generally agree with that. There's probably an element of both issues in play at Georgia, but what do I know?

William (Martinez,GA)

How close is Kolton Houston to being cleared?

David Ching
  (1:01 PM)

Asked about him last week. Same as before. Richt said they haven't given up on him playing and that he still wants to play, but no change in his status.

RJ (Huntsville)

People always talk about firing Richt and getting someone like Smart. I don't think he's proven anything. Hard to be sure how much is him and how much is Saban. I know smart can recruit, but do you think he's ready to be a big time head coach?

David Ching
  (1:03 PM)

How does anyone know that? It's a crapshoot when you hire someone who's never been a head coach before. Richt did a good job. Muschamp seems to be doing a good job. Can't say that about plenty of other first-time HCs.

Feverdawg (Eustis FL)

Listen I get that everyone is punch drunk after that disaster in Columbia. As much as I respect Coach Richt I am not defending him in the way the team performed, but I will defend Mike Bobo. Iwant to know what all the brilliant offensive minds out there would have done differently. The offensive line got dominated. The are no holes to run through, the wide receivers have no time to get open, and A. Murray can't even drop back and go through one progression without getting smashed. Lets hear from all the offensive gurus out there. What do you think David

David Ching
  (1:04 PM)

That's pretty much what I thought after watching it live and again on TV.

Rett (Oregon)

@Mark, It is a long way to Atlanta. If Bama makes it to Atlanta, I don't care who they play.

Skeeter (Athens)

10-2 would be a huge letdown this season. I mean, I'm no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.....

David Ching
  (1:05 PM)

I agree. Not about your hotel choice. The record would probably be a bit of a letdown.

Will (Athens)

Is there any news on how Aaron Murray's dad is? And could you tell him that people are praying for his family next time that you have a chance to talk to him. This loss happened at a horrible time for him because he gets all of this negativity thrown his way when he should be able to have some time to be focused on his family right now.

David Ching
  (1:06 PM)

I requested Aaron yesterday, but I think he's available to speak to reporters after practice today. I'm sure I will not be the only one writing updates on what's going on with his dad after practice today.

Davey O'Sullivan (Memphis)

Well...at least the Falcons won last weekend?

David Ching
  (1:06 PM)

Yeah, how bout them Falcons?

William (Martinez,GA)

Funny how SC fans are already worried about the SEC rule on winning your division. They didn't change this recently to favor UGA like they think. I hope it's changed next year and comes back to bite them so we can hear them complain about changing it back.

David Ching
  (1:08 PM)

That's a legitimately nutty fan base. They don't get enough credit in that regard, I think because they've never won much before now. They really do rival Alabama's in insanity, though.

Davey O'Sullivan (Memphis)

For those who wouldn't hire Smart because he is unproven...two words...WILL MUSCHAMP

David Ching
  (1:08 PM)

There it is. All right everybody, thanks for joining us for our hour. I'll be back in two Wednesdays and we'll do it again to talk some Dawgs-Gators.
