Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! I am Eric. Lots to get to today as we prep for Week 6 in fantasy football. Feel free to ask baseball questions as well. Thanks for showing up and here we go!

Zach (PA)

I have the top waiver claim tonight and am in need of a productive RB pretty badly... In my shoes, would you take Alex Green or Vick Ballard?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Yes, we have some breaking news today, as the Colts' Donald Brown, who had a nice matchup against the Jets, needs knee surgery and will miss a few weeks. We presume Vick Ballard is next, but it's hard to know what he'll do. I ranked him 27th, so not as a starter. Does he have ability? Sure, but unless desperate I can't count on him. That said, I'd go Ballard over Green. I expect Green to share touches with James Starks, and/or Aaron Rodgers to throw 62 times.

Aaron (Work)

Which Jets WR do you see having the most impact this week and ROS. I'm leaning Kerley. Can you think of a markedly better bye-week WR/TE in a standard league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

I ranked Kerley pretty well, actually. Colts can be thrown on as well, and this Mark Sanchez hate is a bit much. He didn't forget how to play quarterback. Sure, he was overrated coming into the season and has a short leash, but still. Kerley landed in my No. 30 slot.

danny (bohemia, ny)

where do you see christian ponder be drafted next year? How high is his ceiling, ever a no doubt top 10 qb?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

I don't think he's a no-doubt top-10 guy, but I do like him and had him ranked 12-14 range for the rest of the season. He can run enough, good arm, nice weapons. Next year? I'll probably find 10 QBs I like better.

Wespvn NORWALK, CA [via mobile]

Jared cook a better option than tamme.

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Flip a coin. They're ranked similarly, 12 and 13 for me.

Daniel Mancini (Brooklyn)

What are your feelings toward Brandon Gibson? Do you see him as a solid WR2 or WR3 now that Amendola is out?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Not really. I did rank him but I'm keeping my eye on speedster Chris Givens. Has a pair of 50-yard catches the past two weeks, one for a score, and NOTHING else. Major upside.

Nathan (Ohio)

Do you think Welker's production goes down when Hernandez returns? Would you sell high on Welker?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

I would not sell. Having another weapon is good for the offense, especially since Gronk is clearly compromised healthwise. It might even help Lloyd, too.

Wyatt (Trade Central)

I have this trade available to me. I get Trent Richardson, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Julio Jones for LeSean McCoy, Torrey Smith. I have Matt Ryan and i like the connection. My other RBs are DMC and R. Brown. Good deal for me?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

I like that deal for you. McCoy is great, but is he THAT much greater than Richardson? Not really. And Jones is a monster.

Art (Texas)

Jennings or Stevie Johnson rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Have to say Jennings still, but he really needs to start playing ball again! I did not rank him this week, but his upside is greater with Rodgers.

Matt (Madison)

I see you have Hernandez ranked significantly higher than Gates this week. Is this more faith in an injured Patriot TE or lack of faith in Gates this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Gates has done nothing. If he didn't have that name and pedigree, he'd be Anthony Fasano. Seriously, no numbers. Whether it's age or health or skills gone, he's doing nothing.

Ben (RI)

Which Arizona RB gets the ball this week? Desperate for a back and Green and Ballard have been scooped up. Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Rumor is Powell starts, but I expect Stephens-Howling to get as many if not more touches, certainly as a receiver out of the backfield.

danny (bohemia, ny)

now that mendenhall is back, do you see the steelers adopting more of a one back system given how bad his replacements were? If it is a one back system, or at least bulk of the carries, mendenhall has to be a top 10 rb given how rare that is right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I don't think he has to be a top-10 RB, but I have him close. The Steelers still gave Redman carries the other day against Philly, so don't expect Mendenhall to have 20-touch days each week.

Jake (San Jose)

Is Hillis still the handcuff to Charles and worth rostering for Charles owners?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I wouldn't bother with Hillis any more. I think when he is healthy he'd leap over Shaun Draughn, but he's not healthy. If you need the spot, move on. Charles is safe.

Kyle (Illinois)

Do you think Ridley's fumbles will land him in the dog house? I am debating whether to start him against Seattle of Martin against KC and Belichick frightens me with his madness sometimes.

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I'd start Ridley. Yes, he needs to hold on to the ball, but he's obviously talented and I doubt Belichick just sits him. Martin is a nice play this week, too.

Tom (Akron)

Bradshaw find any daylight against San Fran this week? Safer to use Ballard or Blount?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

No, I would use Bradshaw. Even if he rushes for only 60 yards, best shot for a score.

Tim (Florida)

Why so much love for Jaquizz every week? hes gotten 1-3 ft pts every game except one... is he droppable for ballard/starks/powell?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Excellent point. I'm not a fan, and I'm obviously a fan of Michael Turner. But Rodgers does get chances, and this week it might be over early. I'd prob keep him around over the guys you mention, unless you need help this week and would really use Ballard.

Jackie (Sunny LA)

Amendola is on waivers in my league, and I need WR's. Worth a stash?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

I don't expect to see Danny boy for at least 6 weeks, but sure, not a bad stash.

Jason (HOTlanta)

Dear Talented Mr. Karabell, I need your trade sensei skills: I have a guy in our league who is willing to trade me Run DMC for Mendenhall and Maclin. I have plenty of WR depth, should I make that deal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Go for it.

Eric (TO)

what do you do about DST? play the best you can get every week or try to ride one you have (ie. GB)

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

There's only about 5 defenses I trust as every week options, and Packers aren't one of them. I'd play the waiver wire and matchups.

Sean (NY)

Any news on Jahvid Best.. what is a best case scenario ranking for him rest of the way (i.e. he comes back week 7, fully integrated by week 9, what is the ceiling)

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Ceiling is high, but nobody knows if he will play, including Best himself.

Horton (Whoville)

BIG trade.... Arian Foster and Torrey Smith for Graham and Calvin??

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

The Foster side. He's pretty good.

Joe (Lincoln, NE)

Gut feeling on Jahvid Best ROS???

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Gut says, unfortunately, the Lions don't risk it and he doesn't play. But hoping for the best. Very talented obviously.

Frank (Bean)

What are the 5 D's that you trust?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Houston, San Fran, Chicago, Seattle and Baltimore, and I'm almost there on Arizona and Pitt.

Grant (Georgia)

Should I trade Jimmy Graham?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Depends what the return is. He's not hurt that bad. Should be fine in Week 7 after the bye. And he's a difference maker.

Mark (Boston)

Do you trust Houston this week at home against GB? I can pick up Miami, which you have one spot higher, but would need to drop a RB handcuff.

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I would say it's not worth it.

Curtis (Boston)

Assuming RG3 is cleared to play on Sunday, do you have any concerns with him, or play it safe with Joe Flacco

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

If cleared to play, as my rank shows, I have no concerns.

Tom (NJ)

Which side wins: L. McCoy and M. Bennett or MJD and V. Davis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

The MJD side, but only because Bennett is a question mark. McCoy and MJD are about the same at this point.

Ross (Des Moines)

Do you consider Colston a sell high at this point? His red zone targets have been high. Or is that more a product of Graham being dinged up last week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I don't think they are related and I would just enjoy him as a WR2 all year.

clark (TX)

i have given up on cam - is that wise? I am trying to trade cam, MJD and graham for foster and romo..... fair trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

You know as bad as you think Cam has been he's eighth in QB points. Not that bad. I would not make that trade, and Foster is No. 1. Still wouldn't.

Billy Idol (Manhattan Beach)

Obviously Kevin Smith has been forgotten in Detroit; Whats the rationale for being completely dropped from the Det game plan though? Seems like he's productive when hes healthy and playing. Any chance he re-emerges?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Rationale is Leshoure is better, more dynamic. It is a bit odd that Smith is getting nothing, though. I don't see much need to keep him owned though. Depends how deep the league.

Todd (CA)

Pitta a three game wonder? Time to drop him or will he rebound?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Still worth owning because of the targets, but as a top-10 guy we all overreacted. NFL teams don't like to be so predictable.

Dante (Minny)

EK - Do you think Mathews and Battle settle into the roles Mathews and Tolbert had in 2011?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I don't think Battle is like Tolbert. Not as big, not a true goal line guy. Mathews is about to take off, so enjoy it.

K (philly)

Would you rather have Ballard or William Powell?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Ballard. At least the Colts can run. The Cardinals weren't running well even when Beanie and Ryan Williams were around. For all the talk about Williams, he had one decent half of football.

Steve Slaton (Purgatory)

What ever happened to me? Do you think GB or AZ looks to sign me?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Was in Miami camp and worked out for the Bears recently, but clearly there's a health issue or he would have found work. Arizona has 3 guys they seem to like, and the Packers don't need to run much. They didn't last year.

Randy (Seattle)

What is the deal with Torrey Smith? Is he Desean 2.0? One good game and than a bust every other week? Carr apparently on Bolden this week, but I'm leery of starting him.

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I think Smith is better than that, but he's going to be a bit inconsistent. Smith has more size than Jackson, and let's be honest, a QB that can get him the ball and has time to throw.

Kyle (Blacksburg, VA)

Am I crazy to start Vick (and the turnovers) over Eli? SF defense scares me

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Wouldn't shock me if Vick had a big game since the Lions are awful defensively now, but if I had both, I would use Eli every week.

Michael (Milwaukee)

If Flynn were to get the job in Seattle eventually, would you bump up any of the receivers?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Not really. I'd be more interested in Sid Rice that way, but not enough to make him a top-30 WR. Rice just isn't the same guy he was.

Chris (Philly)

"I would use Eli every week [over Vick]" - no one saw that coming 14 months ago.

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Well, correct to some degree. Eli was always liked. Vick was overrated. But yes, a year ago I'm sure I had Vick ranked better but early last season it was clear he was a turnover machine. Eli is safer, for production and obviously health.

Zack (Torn about the Flex )

Hi Eric, always appreciate the chats. Do I start a safe play like Hartline or Kerley or should I take a gamble and start Ballard?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

I know people want to use Ballard, and hey, he might have a big game, but this is a risk management game to some degree, and he could do nothing. He could be bad. He could lose touches. I'd think I'll have Hartline and perhaps Kerley better in flex ranks.

Rick (NYU)

Chances that Redman gets RB2 #s this week, with Mendy playing on short rest after 1st game back + blowout potential by PIT?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Yes, that's probably why I ranked Redman better than others. I do not think Mendenhall gets all the touches.

Matt (LA)

Would you give up Brady and Lloyd for Cam Newton and LeSean McCoy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Yes, I would do that. I think the Newton hate is a bit much. No, he's not having the year he did last year, but he's not exactly bad.

Chris (Philly)

Coming from a Philly fan, I know that hurts. Vick can only get better, right? (rosary beads in hands)

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

I'm not a fan. That said, I think it's ridiculous Philly fans think Foles is safe or will be better. Vick is what he is, and Andy Reid can't make him hold on to the ball.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Not a fan of Vick, I should say. The Eagles, yes.

Ben (Cucamonga, CA)

Eric, is it smart to use a roster spot to stash Ben Tate? I just figure he's one injury away from being "the guy" in Houston and possibly a fantasy monster.

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Agreed, but he's also not healthy. Not that it matters when Foster is doing what he's doing.

Mitch (Vermont)

You really think Mccoy and MJD are now the same player for fantasy value like you said earlier? Seems to me from a team and consistency standpoint they are not the same and the ceiling for Mccoy per week is as good if not better than MJD's.

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

McCoy scored an unsustainable number of touchdowns last season, and I disagree with people that think Jones-Drew can't duplicate last year's success. It's not a rip on McCoy; he's awesome. I have these guys ranked top 5 rest of season. But McCoy isn't scoring more than say 12 times.

Keith (VA)

Is this the week to trust Kenny Britt?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Tough to use the word "trust" with him. Ever. What a waste of talent.

Josh (Mesa, AZ)

What are your thoughts on the Bucs running back situation?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

I think Blount will start seeing a larger role because he's healthy, but I don't see it as a bad thing for Martin. That said, Blount didn't get a great rank. It's not like he's a safe goal line guy.

Jason (Houston)

Look, the rankings have everyone much higher on Eli than Flacco (my two QBs), but I don't udnerstand the justification. I mean, Eli's got the niners, right? Doesn't that equate anything?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Sure it does, but I trust Eli no matter the matchup. Look how consistent he is. Flacco is fine, but look at least week. Six points. Does Eli ever do that?

Jim C. (Boise, Idaho)

Titus Young still worth a roster spot over lottery tickets like Alex Green and Bilal Powell?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Honestly, I'm giving him one more week. I will get a good look at Young watching the entire Lions-Eagles game and I want to see why they're ignoring him. But to answer your question, I like Green more ROS.

James (airport)

Travelling but had to ask you a question. Please help me out. Would you trade doug martin for gates?I have mendy, Arian and Pitta

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Not a chance. Gates looks shot.

Buffalo (Wild Wings)

with how bad BUF's defense is, do like starting kolb and roberts if you're stuck with bye week fill ins? or would you rather spread it out and start hawkins instead in a 1.00 PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Roberts vs. Hawkins is pretty similar in terms of risk, so sure. Maximize potential.

Ron (Chicago)

So what's the Colts backfield look like? Ballard, Mewelde Moore, and isn't there somebody else? That has the look of a weak committee to me. Ballard doesn't do much but run straight anyway...

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

I agree. This is not the next Arian Foster. And Luck throws 45 times per game, and will continue to do so.

Harry (Itasca)

Alex Green just went for $38 in my league. Therefore, I should spend _____ on Ballard?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Half. At the most.

Jake (San Jose)

BASEBALL!!! Nats have to wish they didn't shut Strasburg down right about now no?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Most overplayed story of the year. Nats can still win it all. They stuck with their plan. No guarantees Strasburg would have won and let's be clear, Edwin Jackson would have just started Game 4 instead of Game 3.

Jake (San Jose)

How scared are you of the matchup with the Pats for the Seahawks D? Worth picking up someone like Pittsburgh for the week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

I wouldn't. That stuff gets overblown. Will the Pats score 40 points? I doubt it. There should be turnovers and sacks.

Brandon (TX)

This week's bye hit me hard. It looks like I will be starting Big Ben, Mendenhall, and Heath Miller. I'm not trusting Vick. What are your thoughts on starting multiple players from the same team? Should I try to find SOMEBODY else to plug in?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

It's not recommended, but the matchup is fine this week.

CHAMP (DC)

Who has more value ROS: CJ Spiller or Jordy Nelson

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Currently neither is worth much, but I'd still say Nelson.

Desperate (Desperateville)

Do you guys actually put time into ranking kickers or just throw names up randomly? Better side of the trade: McGahee, Romo, Gates or D-Will, Eli, Gronk?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I put more time into the other positions, but I do some research. And the Eli/Gronk side.

Draft Pick (TX)

You can't tell me you get tons of questions about trading draft picks, so answering one may be interested... Murray, Morris and Bradshaw are being sold in my PPR league by teams 0-5. They want picks, so what are they worth?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

The problem is knowing what the picks are worth. I have leagues like that. In one we keep 2 players, in another we keep 6. Big diff of 4 rounds on draft day. If you can win now don't worry about next year. Honestly. Deal for any of these guys if they help, even first-rounders. It's not REALLY the first round in a keeper league anyway.

Ben (Raleigh)

Would you trade Ben Tate and James Jones for Antonio Brown?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I sure would. Even if I owned Foster.

john (montana)

I have Matt Ryan and Luck should I trade luck for lets say a Mendenhall caliber back I am week at the Rb position

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Yeah, that is reasonable. I'd try to get a bit more, but Ryan is safe and looking like this will continue. I like Luck too but you shouldn't need both.

Jimbo (LA)

When do you see Aaron Hernandez being a viable start over guys like heath Miller/ Scott Chandler?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Soon. We just don't know if it will be this week or not. A bit risky.

Deangelo Williams (NC)

Am I really even worth a roster spot?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Barely. And he doesn't like fantasy owners, apparently. Whatever.

Dante (Minny)

Will Antonio Brown ever score a TD more than once per month? The preseason was positioned well for him to take the leap but so far he is the same guy as last year, 7-80-0.

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

I don't think anyone expected 10 touchdowns. He should score 6 or 7. And he's gonna get plenty of receptions and yards.

I will survive (anywhere)

Who would you choose this week in a survivor pool? Only a handful of us left and I've already burned ATL, HOU, BAL, SF and CHI. Leaning towards NE or PIT this week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

I rarely use road teams. But I'm more likely to go Steelers than Patriots this week.

Ryan (The 808)

Offered S Smith and M leshoure for Harvin? is that a wise trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

It's fair, but Harvin is a top-10 WR so you might miss when the others are inconsistent.

Matt (Boston)

Yes or No question.... AP should net me a an elite WR (Roddy, Megatron, Cruz, AJ Green, etc) in a 1 PPR?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Yes

Matt Schaub (Five and O)

Do you play me this week or Big Ben if my opponent has Andre Johnson and James Casey?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

James Casey, really? He's scary. I play Big Ben because I ranked him better. I don't even look at my opponent, especially if it's a WR with NINE catches in four weeks and a RB/TE we didn't even rank.

Frank (Pittsburgh)

Flex Position. Pick oneMichael TurnerScott ChandlerPierre Garcon

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

I just don't understand the hate for Turner. Wow. This one isn't close.

RWG (Boston,MA)

IF speculating for ROS, still Ballard over Green?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

No. Green doesn't have to worry about Benson returning anytime soon. Brown's knee injury was minor. Back in a few weeks.

Frank (NY)

Fair deal: Darren McFadden & Malcolm Floyd for Roddy White

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Sure

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is about all the time we've got for today's chat, plus there were SO many questions it's crashing my browser! Thanks to all of you for your interest and best of luck in Week 6 and beyond!
