Fantasy NFL with KC Joyner

KC Joyner
  (3:00 PM)

Good afternoon! Let's talk some football!

Matt (Miami)

Hello TFS! I was offered Turner for Ridley. With Ridleys fumbling would you do this deal? The Burner has looked fresh this season.....

KC Joyner
  (3:01 PM)

They both have some very favorable matchups coming up but Ridley combines those with some very unfavorable ones. Make the trade.

Lightning Round! (Sir Flex-a-lot)

Reggie Wayne or Mendenhall?

KC Joyner
  (3:02 PM)

We're two minutes into the chat and someone is already calling for a lightning round? C'mon man! Mendenhall, as Wayne has a tough coverage matchup.

Joe (Tx)

Is Brandon Lloyd a bust at this point? I traded Green for him wk one. Yes, I'm that guy!

KC Joyner
  (3:03 PM)

Not a bust in that he has posted some quality totals at times, but he certainly isn't the stretch vertical threat it looked like he would be. That could change after week 9, as NE has favorable matchups down the stretch.

Dangerous Dan Spivey (UWF)

Built an amazing roster in a 12 team league: MJD, Forte, Trent Richardson, Mendenhall, Roddy, Wayne, and Marshall. With only one flex, two of these guys sit weekly. Do I keep the depth and stay injury proof or try and upgrade Rivers/Luck at QB or Rudolph at TE?

KC Joyner
  (3:05 PM)

Wasn't he Sting's tag team partner way back in the day? The QBs are solid so no need to change there. For TE, don't pay too much for an upgrade, as the average TE points per week is somewhere around 7 and Rudolph can hit that target fairly often.

Adam (MA)

Would you trade Spiller for Martin?

KC Joyner
  (3:06 PM)

Nope. Martin looks like he could be in a time share with Blount and therefore his value could be diminishing.

Justin (LA)

Trade question. Someone is offering me Julio Jones for Mendenhall. My RB's are McCoy, Forte, Mendenhall, Martin, and F. Jackson. My WR's are Marshall, Harvin, Floyd, and Hartline. (While everyone else was grabbing QB's, TE's, & D/ST, I was raking in some RBs and WRs). Be patient with my team or go for the trade?

KC Joyner
  (3:07 PM)

Mendenhall could be on the verge of turning the Steelers offense around (see today's TFS ESPN Insider article on the Pittsburgh offense) but your team probably needs WR improvement. Make the trade.

Kevin (Chicago)

KC! Question on TEs. How much work do you think Hernandez gets assuming he plays Sunday? Would you play Cook tonight instead? Thanks for the input.

KC Joyner
  (3:08 PM)

Got them rated as equal in the TFS tight end start-sit charts, but Hernandez does have the injury risk. Would start Cook.

Eric (Miami)

Chris Johnson or Vick Ballard? I am crazy to start CJ.2K?

KC Joyner
  (3:10 PM)

They are actually rated as basically equal on the TFS RB start-sit charts. Ballard was a good back in college (rated very high in the last TFS CFB review of his game) and Johnson has struggled. Go ahead and start Ballard.

Mean Mark Callus (AKA The Undertaker)

Would you start Ballard as a PPR flex or give Gates/Cobb a chance to flex their muscles?

KC Joyner
  (3:11 PM)

OLD SCHOOL!!!!! It's a tough Seattle matchup but Cobb still rates best out of that group.

Casey (SoCali)

Getting hit hard by injuries..play Kendall Wright tonight or Larod Howling against the Bills in my flex?

KC Joyner
  (3:11 PM)

Wright, if only because LSH has the injury question mark.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Would you trade Vick/Decker for Cam/VJax?

KC Joyner
  (3:13 PM)

In a vacuum, no. Cam and V Jax are both in run-first offenses and that somewhat hinders their potential value.

Antonio Cromartie (Cromartie Island)

I made Andre Johnson look like Lyndon B. Johnson, so would starting reggie wayne against me or mendenhall @ TEN be a better idea?

KC Joyner
  (3:14 PM)

Can't say we've ever had an LBJ reference in this chat before - too funny! Wayne still rates higher on the TFS start-sit charts, but it's pretty close.

Dusty Rhodes Perm ((Fla))

Everyone is talking up Ballard! What is your take on him this sunday?

KC Joyner
  (3:16 PM)

Son of a plumber! Like Ballard in general and like the matchup, but don't go overboard on his potential, as that could be a split carry backfield.

PPR (Help)

KC, just bought your start/sit charts last week and lovve them!! I neeeed you: PPR, picked up Ballard bc MJD on bye this week and shady next week. Immediately got offered Decker for him so I took it. I gotta start Blount the next two weeks and already have Miles, BLloyd, Colston and SSmith (the latter two also on bye) but I still Hadddd to make this move right??

KC Joyner
  (3:17 PM)

Glad you like the charts! They take about 10-12 hours to put together (not including the tape breakdown time), so getting good feedback is always appreciated. Not sure what the price for Decker was but do like his prospects, so it sounds like a good move.

Paul "Wrecking" Crewe (THE LONGEST YARD)

In NonPPR--If RG3 is cleared to take the field Sunday vs. The Vikings would you have any hesitation in starting him over Eli Manning in a tough matchup @ SF? Who should I roll with here in Wk6? Thanks KC!

KC Joyner
  (3:18 PM)

RG3 is one of the last remaining blue rated players (blue being the highest possible rating), so if he is cleared to play, he's an absolute must start. And that's before taking into account the Eli/SF matchup that is quite unfavorable for Eli.

Mike (Raleigh)

Do you think Jahvid Best can have a fantasy impact in the 2nd half if he's cleared to play? Word is we should know tomorrow.

KC Joyner
  (3:19 PM)

General TFS rule on injured players is not to trust them in their first game back, especially if they had serious injuries. It would probably be best to pass on Best if possible.

Ricky the Dragon (NY)

Thoughts on Lafell ROS. Hes on my bench. Should I drop him for Cobb Avery or Heyward Bey?

KC Joyner
  (3:20 PM)

That Carolina passing game is regressing and now they no longer have Kalil. Get Cobb in his place.

Abdullah the Butcher (The Madman From The Sudan)

LARGE TRADE QUESTION! would you give up stafford, bowe, jennings, and witten for charles and nelson? I have brady, calvin, demarius and stevie still at wr and bennett at tight end. its alot to give but i think i have the depth. its a keeper. we start 1 rb 2 wr and flex my only running back is mccoy with blount behind him.

KC Joyner
  (3:21 PM)

Funny story - Abdullah actually runs a rib restaurant now. Getting Charles would be a big boon for your team, so make the trade.

John (Seattle)

Should I stick with the Seahawks D (I have Brady as well) or bench them for a sleeper D like the Bucs this week vs KC?

KC Joyner
  (3:22 PM)

They rate basically equal on the TFS start-sit charts but Seattle does have some disadvantages in the matchup. Start the Bucs.

Start/Sit (Charts)

Where can we purchase your start/sit charts?

KC Joyner
  (3:23 PM)

At my site, which is www.thefootballscientist.com. Go to the book store and look for the start-sit service link. Only site plug of the chat.

Patriot or The Dark Patriot?? (Parts Unknown)

Romo or Kolb this week?

KC Joyner
  (3:24 PM)

Kolb, as Romo's matchup is just a bit more difficult.

Bob Candy (East Lansing, MI)

I traded Turner and J.Nelson for MJD and NATE B.. was that a good move on me getting MJD...

KC Joyner
  (3:25 PM)

MJD does have a slight schedule edge over Turner but he also has the weakness of playing in the Jacksonville offense. Probably would have suggested not making the trade but don't think it will be a terrible trade off by any means.

Steve (Va)

Hey TFS. Schaub or Ponder this week? I'm hoping for a GB/Houston shootout.

KC Joyner
  (3:26 PM)

The shootout could happen but Ponder rates higher due to the very favorable Washington matchup.

Dara (Charlotte)

Start Seahawks D or pick up Colts D on waiver wire?

KC Joyner
  (3:27 PM)

Since the Seahawks are facing the best O in the NFL, their start-sit rating is lower than usual. Start the Colts (but make sure not to drop Seattle to get them).

Jim (Los Angeles)

How much as Romo's value fallen off a cliff that you just suggested starting Kolb over him based on matchup. Did you see what happened to Kolb against the Rams? Yuck. Will Romo recover ROS or is he pretty much done as a fantasy starter at this point?

KC Joyner
  (3:29 PM)

Re: Romo, the Cowboys are headed to Baltimore, which is the toughest venue in the NFL right now. Kolb is due to face a defense that is being compared to some of the legendarily bad defenses in NFL history. That's why Kolb gets the nod.

Andrew (SF)

Have you ever been so wrong about a player as CJ this year?

KC Joyner
  (3:30 PM)

Three points here. First, everyone got CJ wrong (he was rated in the top 5 of most pundits RB picks). Second, the season isn't over yet. Third, RBs in general are having terrible years, so if ever there was a season to try to make a high-end prediction, this was it.

Rick (Nashville)

Would you start Ponder (Skins) over Eli (49ers) this week?

KC Joyner
  (3:31 PM)

Yep. Ponder rates 10th on the TFS start-sit charts in part because of the very favorable matchup. Eli rates 18th.

Bad News Brown (Cleveland)

Your thoughts on Josh Gordon this week/ROS?

KC Joyner
  (3:32 PM)

He's good but one game does not a top-flight WR make. Putting it another way, he's still a red-rated player on the start-sit charts.

Johnny Ace (Ace Crusher)

Do your point about RBs having terrible years, you pretty much have to run with R. Bush and A. Morris at this point since they are getting tons of carries in offenses commiting to the run, right?

KC Joyner
  (3:33 PM)

Absolutely. This is a rare year where RBs just aren't carrying their teams and if a team has anyone who can post good point totals on a consistent basis, they have to hit the lineup every week.

Ron (CA)

How do you rate A. Hawkins as a bye week fill in?

KC Joyner
  (3:34 PM)

Got him rated 37th on the WR start-sit charts. Like his talent, just wish he would see more targets.

Bob (Portland)

You mentioned the favorable Ponder matchup - is he worth starting over a disappointing Stafford this week vs. Philly?

KC Joyner
  (3:34 PM)

Sure would. It's a close call but Ponder does end up one grade rank higher on the start-sit charts.

Mean Gene Okerlund (Ringside)

What are you thoughts on Alfred Morris? Does he have enough talent to remain productive?

KC Joyner
  (3:35 PM)

Absolutely. Put it this way - he's got a tough run D matchup and yet still ranks 9th on the RB start-sit charts. He's a perfect match for the Shanahan offense.

Amelia (Philly)

If Greg Jennings cant go do you flex James Jones over Alex reen?

KC Joyner
  (3:36 PM)

Yes, because Starks probably gets dibs on being the lead back in that offense.

Big Mike (Chicago)

Waive Amendola and claim Jared Cook for tonight? Current tight end is Bennett, listed as questionable.

KC Joyner
  (3:36 PM)

Got Cook rated higher than Bennett on the start-sit charts because of Bennett's injury. Make the move.

Jerry The King Lawler (Memphis)

Kc love the chat , D. Brown owner has no rb to start and also because of byes is starting Jennings.. if i offer Ballard and M. Floyd for Jennings, thats more than a fair trade?? thoughts?

KC Joyner
  (3:37 PM)

It's a fair trade but do have to ask, with Jennings injury woes, why trade for him?

Alex Hill (Lafayette, LA)

You said earlier that RGIII is a must start if you have him even coming off the concussion but what if you have him and the red hot Peyton Manning? Then what?

KC Joyner
  (3:38 PM)

Manning does rate in front of RG3 at the moment because of RG3's injury issue. If it is clear RG3 is good to go (and it looks like that will be the case) that grade would change and he would vault over Manning. Good thing is you pretty much can't go wrong either way.

Dumpsville (Dilemma)

I need to drop one of either Bennett (my backup TE after Pettigrew) or Lance Moore (my #5 WR) in order to add a kicker (have none). I'll have one of the worst waiver spots next week. Which is more expendable? Thanks!!

KC Joyner
  (3:39 PM)

Bennett is apt to be more of a central part of his offense than Moore is to NO's offense, so he'd be the player to keep.

Matt (Chicago)

With Luck and Stafford, who do you start? I never thought I'd contemplate starting Luck over Stafford, but even the matchups this week might favor Luck a little.

KC Joyner
  (3:40 PM)

Got Luck rated a bit higher than Stafford. That NY D is not good and the Philly D is not a good matchup for Stafford.

George (Indiana)

Ethics Question: I'm the league manager. A trade was accepted today that involved me obtaining Mike Wallace and him getting Nate Washington (other players were also involved for both sides). Is it okay for me to change league settings to allow the trade to process automatically (because of the Thurs. night game) instead of the usual 2 day waiting period? Thanks!

KC Joyner
  (3:42 PM)

If the trade was accepted and passed league muster, then it should be copasetic to bypass that setting and process the trade before the game. Just be sure to inform the league as to what is being done and why it is being done.

Conflicted (Hell, MI)

You seem confident in RGIII being a top start this week. If your only backup is Big Ben, forcing an early decision tonight, would you still go with RGIII?

KC Joyner
  (3:42 PM)

At the moment, Ben rates higher than RG3 so if the decision has to be made right now, Ben gets the start.

Matt Flynn (Russell Wilson's rear view mirror)

With all this time on the bench you'd think my fantasy team would be better than 1-4. Would you trade hernandez and wayne for Tony g and dez?

KC Joyner
  (3:44 PM)

Tough call and a lot of it depends on Hernandez's health. Having said that, with Tony G now being a blue rated player, it make his side of the trade better, so make the deal.

Jared (Charleston, SC)

Ben is rated higher than RGIII, how about Ben's rating vs. Rodger's?

KC Joyner
  (3:44 PM)

Ben rates over Rodgers as well (just don't like the Houston matchup).

Pondering Trade (NJ)

Who do you like better ROS; Mathews or Richardson?

KC Joyner
  (3:45 PM)

Mathews. Richardson has a more difficult matchup schedule and Mathews has an incredibly favorable playoff matchup schedule.

Bill (KC)

Hey KC! In a PPR, I send Greg Jennings and Leshoure. I get AP. Fair deal?

KC Joyner
  (3:46 PM)

It's more than fair given Jennings' injury issues.

Ric Flair (Dallas)

Play Jared Cook tonight or give Gates one more chance?

KC Joyner
  (3:47 PM)

Got them rated as equals across the board on this week's start-sit charts. Flip a coin on this one.

Devin Brooks (Detroit)

Hey you... good afternoon partner.. got one for you, I dont know which way to go.. Sidney Rice or V.Ballard.... give it to me for my flex spot.. thanks..

KC Joyner
  (3:48 PM)

Ballard rates one grade higher than Rice this week. They both have favorable matchups but Rice hasn't posted good numbers with Wilson under center.

Ben (Charlotte)

been starting Eli every week and didn't draft a back up, do i take what i can get vs a stout SF D, or go waiver wire for Alex Smith or Kevin Kolb?

KC Joyner
  (3:49 PM)

Kolb rates the highest out of that group. Buffalo's defense, which is giving up yards at a near record pace, has to go across the country to face Arizona. Got to like Kolb's chances under those circumstances.

Bert (St. Paul, MN)

Is there any point in stashing Hankerson in a 14 team dynasty league (does he have any more upside)?

KC Joyner
  (3:50 PM)

He's got talent but just hasn't shown he will get the nod for lots of PT in the Shanahan system. Don't feel compelled to stash him if there is a better option out there.

Steve (The 215)

Law Firm has looked awful lately. Start Ballard over him for PPR flex this week?

KC Joyner
  (3:51 PM)

Got Green-Eliis rated just a bit higher because of the favorable matchup.

Million dollar man (Ted Dibiase)

$$$ Romo is dropped in my league and I have Brees on bye. I picked up Ponder a few weeks ago for the juicy matchup this week, but should I drop him to get Romo in hopes he dices Baltimore and then have a trade commodity? Also almost dropped Seattle D for NE D this week for the matchup but didn't, what do you recommend?

KC Joyner
  (3:53 PM)

Romo likely won't dice Baltimore but he may still have better long-term trade value. Don't drop the Seattle D, as they are going to be an every week starter in just about every other week. For Romo, if you can afford to take a risk this week, get him over Ponder but if the team record says that risks cannot be taken, stick with Ponder.

pondering my luck (cuz i'm shooting the brees)

hi kc, need to start luck or ponder as brees is on bye, if passing tds are 6 pts who do i start? thx!

KC Joyner
  (3:54 PM)

Got them rated as equals on the start-sit charts but do have Luck rated green and Ponder rated yellow. Since green outranks yellow, Luck gets the nod.

The Iron Sheik (In the middle of Camel Clutching)

KC! Answer this or I will have to give you your very own CC! Bench Cruz for Wayne?

KC Joyner
  (3:56 PM)

Now I just need Arnold Skaaland to come back so he can throw in the towel for me. Cruz and Wayne both have very tough matchups but Wayne's matchup is a bit more favorable in that the Jets D overall is nowhere near as good as the SF D. Start Wayne.

Regarding risk of team record (followup)

You said this "but if the team record says that risks cannot be taken, stick with Ponder." What would a team record be that says you can't take risk vs one that you could take risk??

KC Joyner
  (3:57 PM)

If the team is 4-1 or 5-0, take the risk and get Romo. If the record is 3-2 or worse, short-term thinking has to win the day and thus call for Ponder.

Wrestling? (MT)

Wish I knew something about wrestling so I could get a question answered! Need RB help. Picked up Alex Green. Should I drop Bilal Powell and pick up Starks as well? Alternatively, I could pick up Powell from AZ. Just looking for lottery tickets.

KC Joyner
  (3:59 PM)

Wrestling names are winning out but the best way to get a question posted is to say something funny - humorous posts always get moved to the top. Bilal is probably not a good lottery pick in that the Jets O is really struggling. Starks is probably better long term over AZ Powell in that the Cardinals might look to trade for someone to take over that role until Beanie returns.

Arnold Skaaland (Throwing in towel)

Im 1-4 in a 12 teamer. Would you sell Jennings for like 60 cents on the dollar or hold onto him still?

KC Joyner
  (4:00 PM)

It's never a good idea to sell low but if you can get an owner to buy into Jennings future (which might not be a hard sell), it's a good deal to make.

Brian (Boston)

Hey KC, would you rather start Mendenhall or Antonio tonight for flex? .5 ppr. Thanks!

KC Joyner
  (4:00 PM)

Both should put up really good numbers but Antonio rates a rank higher in the start-sit charts.

Dino Bravo (Stomping around town)

If Nicks plays, considering the tough matchup, do you start him over Garcon? Thoughts on Garcon ROS?

KC Joyner
  (4:02 PM)

Dino Bravo had my kids favorite wrestling finishing hold - the Airplane Spin. My youngest gets a huge kick out being put into that hold (which had to be the most ridiculous finisher back in the day). Nicks over Garcon if he plays on Sunday and Nicks over Garcon ROS.

Baron Von Raschke (Goose Step High)

Actually had him as a substitute teacher. Can I feel confident in starting Big Ben, Mendy and Brown tonight/going Forward? I know all eggs in one basket can be crushed by "The Claw"!!

KC Joyner
  (4:04 PM)

What is it with wrestlers being teachers? BVR & George Steele are just two that come to mind but there are more than that. The Steelers offense is on the verge of a huge turnaround (see today's TFS ESPN Insider article on the Pittsburgh O for more details) so have no worries in putting all of the eggs in the Black and Gold basket.

K (Florida)

Will you comment a bit on how awesome Jamaal Charles is?

KC Joyner
  (4:06 PM)

He's getting great run blocking and doesn't have to share PT. As long as that continues and he holds up physically, Charles will be one of the best RBs in fantasy football.

John (GA)

Do I go with Luck or Flacco this weekend?

KC Joyner
  (4:06 PM)

Like Flacco's matchup but Luck ends up one grade higher on the start-sit charts.

KC Joyner
  (4:09 PM)

The hour just flew by this week, didn't it? Before hitting the road, got four quick items. First, more info about the start-sit charts can be found at www.thefootballscientist.com. Links to the TFS articles are always posted on Twitter @KCJoynerTFS. I'll be working tonight's ESPN.com in-game chat, so stop by and say hey if you have a moment. Also recording an ESPN Insider podcast that should be posted tomorrow, so check that out as well. Thanks again for all of the questions and hope to see you all here next week!
