Hey folks, Stephania got a bit backed up on her schedule this morning, so we're moving her chat back to 11:30 a.m. ET. Keep sending in those questions!
Good morning and Happy Friday! Unless you're a Mendenhall owner, in whch case you probably suffered from an underachieving performance. Hopefully we can get you on your way to a better weekend...
Any word yet on Hakeem Nicks? If he is a go would you start him against SF?
Jonathan: I have this exact dilemma. And to top it off, I am Niners fan, so very conflicted. But I think it is looking - at least early on - like he has a chance to play. I think if he plays, he's their biggest receiving threat. But I'm not sure it means he has a great game. Hard to keep him on bench if he plays though.
What kind of downtime are you figuring for Mendenhall? How serious is the Achilles injury he suffered last night?
Greg: If his comments post-game are to be believed (and the fact he even talked after the game is a good sign), then it was more precautionary than anything. Coming off ACL surgery, if you sustain even a minor injury, you worry about compensating, increasing risk. At least they have extra time before next game. Maybe doesn't miss any time.
With Harvin a late-week addition to the injury report, how much should I be panicking? Thanks Stephania!
Chris: Not panic time yet. They referenced it as a "sore" hamstring, so not necessarily serious and they may have opted to then limit him so as not to risk making it worse.
Any news on Demaryius Thomas being limited?
Jon: Sore hip, did individual drills. But since they play Monday night, doesn't seem to be a big worry. After all, he was out there Thursday for first big practice pre-MNF and did some work.
Is Garcon's foot going to be a year long issue ?
Bo: Interesting. It's clearly going to bother him for a while - and I think that makes it a risk to have a setback, but obviously at this point he's going to play through it until he can't. I think it's particularly interesting that he's not on the injury report any more. The classic example of not "officially" hurt but not fully healthy either.
Is next weeks Monday nighter a best case scenario or realistic outlook for the return of Best? Do you see any chance he may remain inactive all season as he just doesn't overcome his problems?
Graham: I think if he gets clearance, they plan to bring him back for the Monday game, but that is the big "IF." The results are expected later today so hopefully we hear something but there is something about his particular situation that is unusual, although no one has addressed it publicly. Best referenced it in a veiled way but did not elaborate. It's possible that he could be inactive all season but he has said he doesn't plan to quit completely even if not cleared now. We'll see.
Afternoon Stephania - Whats the news on Jennings? He going to be out this week?
Hello John: I expect he sits. No practice yet and he has been very clear about not returning this time until he feels fully healthy.
Between the Cardinal's running backs (Stephens-Howling and Powell), will either injury impact the amount of touches they're likely to get?
Joe: That's what we'll probably find out in-game this weekend. S-H is coming off a hip flexor injury and Powell had a recent concussion. Both are expected to play and I think that the Cardinals are looking to see what happens. Not ideal for fantasy owners and people have different outlooks. I think S-H has the history here and some good upside but the worry is that he can't handle a full workload.
Hello Stephania, this is the obligatory question about Hernandez status update. If you had to bet on whether he plays or not this weekend, what would your bet be? thanks
Alvaro: Understood. He's a great player and everyone wants to know when he's back. Still limited in practice but it sounds as if the progress is coming along. Still, traveling west to play tough game vs Seattle at 5 weeks post, I'm just not feeling it. It is only a guess at this point but my guess is there's one more week.
What do you think of Simpson's injury? I'm worried it could be more long term than the Vikings are letting on? Should I drop him for Josh Gordon?
Jeremy: I have the same concern. Whether it's a disc in his back or something else that's causing the nerve compromise which gave him numbness/weakness in his leg, it's not the type of thing that usually goes away in days. It looks to me like their optimism was a bit premature and I would not be surprised if he sits this week. As to how much longer, no way to predict. Not sure I get rid of him though unless you need immediate help.
Any news on Jimmy Graham?
Zeke: Almost impossible to get much info when a team is on bye. The boot may not be a huge deal, wouldn't read too much into it. Likely no real update until teams return to formal practice.
Hey Stephania! I didn't see anything about Martellus Bennett in your column today? Any news on how bad he messed up his knee?
Vishal: True. He was absent from the column. He did hyperextend it but was able to limp through the rest of the game. He has been getting treatment and doing only limited work. I am guessing he will play this weekend, not sure he's 100 %.
Your thoughts on Jermichael Finley playing this weekend? Thanks!
Jerry: Not scheduled to practice until today so no real info until we know whether he went or not. Put it this way, would not be surprised if he misses this week.
Hey Stephania, love your work, it's always so helpful! Follow up on Hernandez - if it looks like he will play, would you start him or Pitta? I'm also worried about the danger of a late scratch at 4 for Hernandez while Pitta goes at 1.
Kevin: Thank you...and I go with Pitta. I like the definite option - someone I know will play versus the question amrk and I think even if Hernandez is active, I'm not counting on him to be heavily involved right away, esp when he has not really been practicing much with team drills.
Congrats on your SF Giants! Who are you rooting for tonight to play them in the NLCS?
Freddy: Thank you! And Nats, selfishly b/c then I can likely get to a game...
S Jax is NOT on the injury report? What?!
Chip: Believe it. Think he is finally feeling better.
AJ Green was listed as Questionable yesterday. Have you heard anything?
Cyrus: THe impression I get is that this is not a serious injury but still important to give him less work and treatment during the week so he can play this weekend, which I expect him to do.
Will Keller be playing on Sunday?
Mike: The last time we thought he would play he had a setback and now it's been an additional two weeks. Obviously this was a more serious strain and not only am I not counting on him playing (although admittedly it looks as if he could), I need to see him get through a game without issue before I get comfortable with him being healthy.
Why was Arian Foster all of a sudden questionable this week?
Max: I don't pay much attention to those designations because the D/Q/P tags don't truly get issued until Friday. Those are just approximations. WHat they are doing in practice is more important. And with the work Foster is getting, they are resting him esp early in the week in practice. No real threat to him playing this week.
Any word on RG III?
Hondo: It looks like he'll play unless there is a setback between now and Sunday.
UPDATE: Jeff Howe (beat writer for the Patriots) just tweeted this: "@jeffphowe Aaron Hernandez's travel bag is packed with pads in front of his locker." That has to be a good sign.
It might be a good sign that he travels. And again, he may suit up. But really hard for me to get excited about him getting a full workload against a tough Seahawks D, even if they let him take the field.
Anymore on Andre Brown? David Wilson a decent desperation play, or at least ROS stash with 2 injury prone RBs in front of him?
Scott: Brown probably out this week with the concussion. And if you have a deep bench, why not stash Wilson? Looks like he's finally getting a chance to work some after his first week fumble and with injury concerns all around, he could have value later.
Wanted to get your take on Lisfranc injuries. In your opinion, are they harder to come back from than ACLs? Especially for a RB.
Dan: I think they are less certain. ACL rehab pretty standard, even though it's long and intense. But Lisfranc injuries are all unique. Lots of potential challenges for guys coming off these. More complicated rehab and recovery so outcome less certain, not that a guy won't return b/c many do, but whether a guy can come back to previous form.
Thanks all - time for me to go. Have to jump on the radio. Good luck in Week Six!!!
