Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (3:03 PM)

Welcome to our weekly Friday afternoon chat.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:04 PM)

We got some news to tell ya first. Chris Jones and Anthony Spencer are questionable for the game on Sunday. Brian Moorman is out. The team has worked out 15 players and Jerry Jones isn't sure if they will sign anybody.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

How do you think that the Dallas Cowboys will do on Sunday at the Ravens?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:05 PM)

Chris,Welcome back. The Cowboys are going to lose in Baltimore on Sunday. It's going to be a close game and I expect the Cowboys to run the ball well on Sunday. However, the Ravens defense will slow the offense down and hold on for a victory. This game reminds me of the Patriots game from last year.

Don (Chicago)

Does Garrett survice after this year?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:06 PM)

Yes, Garrett will return in 2013. I have no idea why he wouldn't return.

Ray (Southside)

Hey Calvin....great u know the reasoning behind why the cowboys are working out so many db's and safeties today?? is someone hurt or something??

Calvin Watkins
  (3:07 PM)

This is something the team should have done last week during the bye. I think most of these guys are the 52 or 53 man on the roster. A guy who will play some special teams. It's not about filling a void left on defense.

raul (rio grande city)

Calvin, is Jerry scared of taking Guards high in the draft after the results with Peterman and the guy from Ballstate and Rogers?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:08 PM)

I don't think so. Jerry drafts the best guy available. Now drafting a guard very high isn't very sexy and you don't win the news conference. But maybe Jerry should consider one next year.

Jared L (Vancouver, WA)

How do you feel about Witten this week? Starting Kyle R. At TE, but need a flex as well. Only Powell as an option other than Witten.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:09 PM)

Given how Witten played two weeks ago, and with some time off, he is worth starting. He might have some room this week to get about seven catches.

Rob Cagley (Shreveport, LA)

I saw our Shreveport guy was limping around at practice and had a brace on his leg after missing with an illness. How's Claiborne doing and will that hinder him any for the Ravens?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:11 PM)

Mo is fine. He had a migraine on Thursday that forced him to miss practice. Mike Jenkins had the same issue earlier in the season. Jenkins is wearing a sleeve on his knee and he told me he feels fine.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:12 PM)

Lots of reports from Baltimore saying Ray Lewis isn't the same anymore. Thoughts?

john (woodbridge,va)

i dont understand why the cowboys thought high on livings and the other g from the panthers, they should of signed two solid t,and gs

Calvin Watkins
  (3:17 PM)

Livings has been solid this season. But Bernadeau has struggled and admitted as much last week. If he struggles again, then Derrick Dockery is around and he could replace Bernadeau. This is a big week for the offensive line.

Trey Justice (arlington)

fantasy wise would you start bryant or austin this week? PPR

Calvin Watkins
  (3:18 PM)

Neither one. Austin has hamstring issues and Bryant is inconsistent.

Tre' (Brown)

What up Mr Watkins, do you think we should go after a free agent running back to back up Murray along with an o lineman?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:21 PM)

Tre, the Cowboys have four running backs on the roster. Lance Dunbar, Phillip Tanner, Felix Jones and DeMarco Murray. No need to sign another running back.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:21 PM)

Tre, the running back isn't the problem, it's the blocking.

vincent (frisco,texas)

Will Murray get the ball more against the RAVENS?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:22 PM)

What's up, Vincent? If the Cowboys are winning, expect Murray to get it 18-to-25 times. If the team is trailing in a close game the numbers decrease to about 18-to-20. If the Cowboys are getting blown out and are forced to pass more in the second half, then 12-to-15 carries.

Lila Ann (Hawaii)

Hey Calvin,Everyone says BRYANT is talented but talent is only going to take u as far as u take your talent on the field what is the real problem with BRYANT

Calvin Watkins
  (3:26 PM)

Consistency is the biggest issue with Dez Bryant. Bryant is a talented player but needs to find a way to make plays when defenses challenge him early in games. I don't think Jason Garrett knows how to use him on a consistent basis. Throw deeper passes to him, place him in motion and get him going.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Will Carter and Lee be able to keep up with Rice when he comes out of the backfield to catch some dump off passes?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:31 PM)

Carter is more athletic in pass coverage than Lee. Rice is such a shifty player that Carter and Lee will have some problems dealing with him. The Cowboys have to get a handle on Rice early one to keep this game close. Then again, the Ravens don't have the best offense in the world. I expect a close game with Ray Rice possibly being the difference.

Lila Ann (Hawaii)

So really the problem is NOT BRYANT its GARRETT b/c like u said GARRETT dosen't know how to use him i would hate for us to lose him (BRYANT) that is why maybe when we let go players to other TEAMS they have BREAKOUT SEASONS perfect i.e MARTY B.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:32 PM)

The problem is both of them. Martellus Bennett was in the same boat Bryant is in now. Lots of potential but didn't fulfill it.

John C. (Tulsa)

Do you feel that Bill Callahan is an upgrade over Hudson Houck? Other teams don't seem to have high draft picks at OL yet they perform better. If it's not coaching, who scouts these guys and why is he still there?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:33 PM)

Hard to say. Houck was one of the best, when he left he was the highest paid offensive line coach in the NFL. Now Callahan has an excellent rep among NFL people. Both are good, it's just about the linemen doing their jobs.

Jeri (San Diego)

Hi Cal, can you see the cowboys keeping Witten at the line trying to protect Romo when boys trying to go downfield since the O-line is having so many problems? Good weekend to you.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:36 PM)

Yes, but at times the Cowboys have to let Witten get into the open areas of zone coverage to get catches. At times, expect Witten to make small hits on the linebackers and tackles as he runs into his route.

John C. (Tulsa)

Is there any recognition among the team how soft they are compared to the intensity of the Bears, 49er's, Ravens or Steelers? Not enough Ratliffs'.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:37 PM)

Players don't say if the're soft or not. That doesn't happen. But the return of Jay Ratlffff

Calvin Watkins
  (3:38 PM)

should help the Cowboys this week.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:39 PM)

Guys have to get a haircut. Have a great weekend.
