What's up guys. Just got done with my work day, my film study and my weight work out. Now i'm ready to answer some questions. Let's have some fun!
Who is the one linebacker or defensive back you dread facing? Who is the toughest to break free from?
DeMarcus Ware is one of the toughest players I've ever played against. He's such a handful. Not my favorite guy to have to go up against. I'd have to say Ray Lewis. Once he gets his hands on you he's going to do everything to get you down.
What would it mean to bring a championship to the city of Houston?
An awful lot. As a player, to win a championship would be an awesome feeling. I did it in high school. Houston has been waiting for a while. It would drive the fans crazy, in a good way.
Were you worried earlier this season that you may play the whole season with replacement refs?
I'd like to say that I wasn't really concerned with the refs but it got to the point that it started to affect some games. At first I wasn't worried.
Owen, do you ever play video games and, if so, what do you play?
I'm probably one of the worst video game players in the world. The worst ever. I used to play when I was younger. I lost more interest in college. I've dabbled to get back into but I'm not that good. I play Madden and get my butt kicked by my brothers.
Do you ever get concerned that we don't know enough about concussions and you guys are putting your futures at risk?
All types of injuries are part of the game. If you worry about it too much it takes away from playing. Steeping back and taking a look at it, I don't think we will really know what it does to modern day players for a while. I don't think it matters what kind of head gear you are wearing if three big guys are hitting you. There's a lot to still learn. And I think they are doing a great job.
What do you see yourself doing after your playing days are over?
When I'm done playing I plan on using my degree from the University of Wisconsin. Meteorology. Weathermen in the NFL are few and far between. If I could combine weather and football I would like to do that.
Who is the biggest physical freak at TE in the NFL?
I'd have to say Rob Gronkowski. He's such a mismatch. He's too big for everybody.
Owen, will the loss of Brian Cushing have a bigger effect on or off the field? Can your defense rebound without him?
I think it's going to have an effect both ways. He's the captain of our team and leader of our defense. His leadership is big. His play on the field spoke for itself. He was running the show. Tough to lose him. We lost a lot of guys last year and people had to step up. So we have developed a lot of depth from that. I think our defense will be fine.
How did an Illinois kid end up at Wisconsin?
If you've ever been to Madison it speaks for itself. I actually didn't have interest in Wisconsin until I went up and visited. My parents wanted me to check it out because they were giving me a scholarship. I went and visited and it was a perfect place to spend 4 or 5 years. It was awesome.
whats it like being the premier texas team
I don't know if we are. I think we are trying to be. Our popularity is increasing. Obviously that comes with success. I think Dallas will always be Americas' team. It's good to see people outside of Houston rocking Texans' gear.
what is you r take on the evolving role of the tight end?
From when I got in the league and even a few years before that, the position began evolving. I think the NFL is a mismatched league. It so happens the tight end position is at the forefront of that. It's a fun time to be playing tight end for sure.
Your last Twitter post was "Turning, turning, turnt. #turnup" What exactly were you turning up? And is it still "turnt" up?
That was out of the Jets' game. I think I was just excited after the game. That was my way of kind of answering/explaining the celebration after I scored. I was just turning the Texans up.
What do you thing has been the most important reason for your 5-1 start this season.
I think it's the maturity of the team, honestly. We've been through a lot and been humbled a lot. I think we realize we have a pretty talented team. We knew we could do great things. It's that work ethic and togetherness. Our coach has us believing that.
Is it true you set the Illinois record for quarterback fumbles? How did you solve your fumbling issues?
Absolutely not. Simply put no.
Do you think Montee Ball will be a good pro running back?
Definitely. I think he's a tough kid. They run that pro-style offense up there, running the ball. I think he will have a lot of success. It's because of the program he comes from. I'm excited to see what he can do in the NFL.
Which is harder, reading the weather patterns or reading opposing defenses?
They can both be really tricky. They can both be unpredictable. Even if you study patterns and tendencies, weather and football can throw something different on a given day. I'd say today, it would be weather patterns.
Compare the gameday crowds in Madison and Houston.
They are both awesome atmospheres. To me there's no better place to play or watch a college game than Madison. Clearly, I'm biased. There's more side antics in the crowd in a college game compared to the NFL. But Houston has loud, passionate fans. I think it's top three most difficult places to play in the league.
How frustrating has it been to have so much talent the last few years, but so many key injuries.
Yeah it's not ideal. We thought we had a pretty good team the last couple years. Losing Andre, our starting QB was probably the toughest situation to deal with. I think that's kind of what has made us what we are now without dealing with those situations. Now that's behind us and we are happy to be where we are.
How much time do you spend with Matt Schaub off the field and why do you think you guys have such great chemistry?
We don't spend too much time outside of football during the season. He has his home life and family to go home to. In the offseason we play golf and hang out. We've been friends since the first day he got to Houston.
What is the one gift that Andre Johnson has that you wish you possessed?
His athleticism. If I could run like Andre it would make things a lot easier for me.
Who would you start as your fantasy QB this week if you could start anyone?
I'd start Schaub. I'm a homer. I'm going to start my guy.
No I'm not the Alex that can't hit. What is the biggest moment of your NFL career?
So far, I'd say playing in the playoffs last year. Winning a home playoff game and then playing on the road. That's what you want to do as a player, play in the playoffs and it finally happened.
What kind of music do you like to listen to? I have you as a country-rock kind of guy.
If there's one thing I don't like, its country rock. I've always been a hip-hop guy. In the last year or two I've really gotten into house music.
Who do you think you guys will be playing against in the Super Bowl?
I don't know. I'm going to say I think the Packers are going to get it together. I think they will make a run and we could have a nice rematch with them.
Growing up did you always want to be a football player? If not what did you want to be?
I feel kid that likes sports wants to be a baseball players, basketball player, football player...I've always loved football, since I can remember. I used to get dressed up in replica unis and helmets. But that's just a far featched dream that came true.
If you could play with any QB from the past who would it be?
Well, my favorite QB growing up...well I had a few. Joe Montana, Jim McMahon. They were both different.
What's your favorite sport outside of football?
My favorite sport to play outside of football is golf. I'd say golf and basketball.
What is like being on a Texans team that in your first year was an upstart squad and now is considered at top contender in the AFC?
It's been cool to be part of the process. The Texans started from scratch in 2006 with a new coach and I was part of that. We've been through some tough times. Some ups and downs. Probably more downs than ups. Recently, we finally got to where we wanted to. In terms of making the playoffs and now to be a part of what we have going on now.
Do you think we've seen the end of Ray Lewis or will he find a way to return next season?
I think he's coming back. I think he wants another Super Bowl. I think he's hungry.
What is the only cool thing you have come to love in the "Heart of Texas?"
If you could only be one thing would it be a Unicorn or a honey badger?
Well I am a Badger. So default answer is Honey Badger.
What's the worst job you've ever had?
This is an easy question. Worst job I've ever had was working with the butcher in my neighborhood grocery store. I had to clean out all the meat grinding machines and basically anything that was holding meat scraps that weren't going to be used. It smelled and was awful.
What do you guys have to do to rebound from the loss to the Packers?
We need to make fewer mistakes. We had a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes. If we play smart, clean football we are giving ourselves a pretty good chance to win.
Big fan. What is the craziest thing you've been asked to sign?
I want to say someone asked me to sign their kid. Their young child. Not a baby but their young child. That was strange.
Who are you rooting for in the World Series, and being from Illinois are you a Cubs fan?
They are still playing baseball now? I have honestly not been paying attention to play offs. And I'm not a die hard Cubs fan.
Do you consider yourself a good dancer? Could you teach me how to dougie?
I'm a phenomenal dancer. I could "teach you how to Bucky!"
As your major is Oceanic Sciences where would you suggest I vacation this Christmas? I don't want to be eaten by sharks.
If you want some warm weather come to Houston for Christmas. It's usually about 70 degrees and not humid and you are far enough from the Gulf that you shouldn't run into any sharks.
Who is the coolest person you've ever got a chance to hang out with?
I got to meet a lot of cool people when I was at the Pro Bowl after the 2008 season. Being around Peyton Manning was pretty cool. First time I had met him and talked to him. And he's even funnier than he is on those commercials.
What is your favorite nickname? Is it "The Weatherman"?
No, probably OD or BroD.
What's your favorite movie?
Dumb and Dumber
What's it like trying to block JJ Watt in practice?
Luckily I don't have to do too much. But when I do it's a pain.
I know you tore your ACL in 2009, I recently tore mine. Any advice on recovery?
I would say be patient. Eventually you are going to be better and back better than before, I promise.
I'm a big fan of the ESPN Body Issue; would you ever do that issue?
Yeah I would definitely do it.
Who's your closest friend on the Texans?
All my closest friends left this offseason. After all those guys, I'm pretty close to all the ends. Garret Graham, Sam Casey, Chris Myers.
If you didn't play for the texans would you be a bears fan or packer fan?
I would be neither because I was a Bengals fan growing up.
Hey Owen, who is the funniest or craziest person on the team?
I think the craziest person is Bryan Braman.
DO you JJ and Garrett watch badger games together and have you gotten anyone in the locker room on their bandwagon?
We haven't had a badger watching party, so to speak. But we have been able to watch them play at night together at the hotel. And everyone has their own college.
as your former teammate, what are your feelings on Eric winstons outburst about Matt Cassel?
I respect what Eric had to say. He felt like he needed to say something and he spoke very well. A lot of people have opinions and he spoke the truth.
What was the hardest thing about coming back from your ACL injury?
The hardest thing was dealing with not being exactly where I wanted to be when I came back. When I came back, I wanted to be the player I was before I got hurt. And that was a little unrealistic. So the process of getting to the level I was playing at was the toughest part.
Who could do more push-ups: you or the Oregon Duck?
Hopefully me. Hopefully I'm stronger than a mascot. And I bet they have more than one duck because I know we have more than one Bucky.
Is there a big rivalry with the teams (and fans) with the Cowboys and Texans sharing the same state?
I think it's more of a fan pride as far as rivalry. Texans' fans want to be the best team and that's how the Cowboys' fans are. We don't play them every season, it's more of a fan thing.
Would you ever want to be a coach or GM?
Not in the NFL.Those guys work such long hours. They are here before and after the players. When I retire I don't want to work that hard.
What do you think about Jeremy Lin joining the Rockets? Will you go to any games this year?
I might try to go to more games now that he's kind of the face of the franchise down here. I think the Rockets needed something like that.
What stadium is the toughest to play in?
I think the Superdome is the toughest place I've been to play in. They are extremely loud. You have to yell on the sidelines to communicate because it's so loud. Although I have not been to Seattle.
What did you think about Monte Ball breaking the Wisconsin and Big Ten record for TDs by a RB last weekend
I think it's one heck of an accomplishment. There have been a lot of good players. Of all the records he has broken at Wisconsin that's pretty impressive.
Is there a lot of political conversation in the locker room these days? Would you say most players are interested in the upcoming election?
Yeah. People ask if we watched the debate, what we think about it. I think it's just as much conversation you have at any office. I think everyone is concerned about what's going on with this country.
What was the first big purchase you made when you signed your first contract?
When I signed as a rookie, I got myself to live in Houston. A place of my own to live in. I felt like a grown up.
What are you going to be for Halloween? Any suggestions for me? I'm a college junior so don't tell me to be a Power Ranger.
Dumb and Dumber. I am going with the timeless classic. I'm going as Lloyd Christmas in his orange suit. I have the whole get up.
Talk a little bit about your head coach's his lack of post season exprience with the Texans and if you think that could be a factor this year.
I don't think it will be a factor at all. He's won championships as a coach and as a player. I think that will be a big factor.
What's your prediction for this week's game vs. the Ravens?
I predict we are going to play a lot better than we did last week. You are going to see the Texans you saw the last five weeks.
If you could have a pool filled with any besides water what would it be filled with?
I would have it filled with different pairs of Air Jordans.
Wow guys those were some awesome questions. Such a wide spectrum, you had me thinking hard. It was a lot of fun.
