Chat with Chris Mortensen

Chris Mortensen
  (11:02 AM)

Good morning! NFL - the league that never sleeps. Let's chat.

Marcos (Miami, fl)

Good morning Mort! What are your thoughts the development of Tannehill and the future of the Fins under Philbin?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:05 AM)

It's pretty promising and I don't think it's a mirage. When you consider that talent evaluators thought Tannehill had the skill set necessary to play in the NFL - size, arm and athleticism, the issue was whether his 19 starts as a QB was enough body of work to succeed or even to project as a "franchise" guy. We see now that GM Jeff Ireland looks like he hit on Tannehill and Philbin. And Philbin has hired a good staff and has shown the wisdom of having Mike Sherman as OC. The future does look bright in Miami.

Mikey (Lackawanna,NY)

Mort, Do you think Bill Polian will ever be a GM in the NFL again?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:08 AM)

I think Bill would be willing to be a very active consultant in assisting an owner at getting his organization on the right track or set up. The guy is a 6-time executive of the year and, remember, that is by vote of his peers only. Now, would I rule him out from ever taking another GM job? No, but he and his wife Eileen are also trying to experience the joy of being grandparents.

Mike (OKC)

What kinda of passing attack can the titans have if CJ2K steps up his play?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:11 AM)

I'd say it's a combination of things on what can dictate a successful passing attack. They have the quarterbacks in both Locker and Hasselbeck. The offensive line has to be more physical and I have had some defensive coordinators question some of the formations that would set up the run and pass game to a higher level. With Kenny Britt, an elite physical talent, you have to ask can he stay healthy and out of trouble. He came into the league at a very young age. Kendall Wright, good slot guy. Jared Cook, talent showing finally at tight end. And, yes, Chris Johnson has to play at a consistently high level.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Any legs to the rumors of someone like Chris Ivory or Bryce Brown getting traded to a RB-needy team, like AZ?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:11 AM)

I would say, yes, pay attention to any team that has a wealth of running backs because the Cardinals are close to bankruptcy at the position due to injuries.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Been pretty quiet in the NOLA..any news on Jimmy Graham? Is he ok?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:12 AM)

He had a bye week after the ankle injury but the Saints sound confident that he will play this week. (What, you have him on your fantasy team like me?)

Jason (Philly)

What do you think happen next with the Eagles (if anything)? Is it something as simple as Reid taking over offensive playcalling, or something like Vick being benched?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:15 AM)

Jason, I think both of those things are possible. If Vick got benched, I believe it would be temporary unless the next QB, presumably rookie Nick Foles, just lit it up and didn't turn over the ball. That doesn't address their O-line issues, which I believe is a big contributor to the overall problems with the offense. But also remember that it's only six games and think of all the teams that have been in crisis at this time of year and gone on to win the Super Bowl.

Nick (HD) [via mobile]

Mort!!! After the Monday night collapse. Do you think the Chargers locker room has lost faith in Rivers? He made a ton of costly mistakes last season and hasn't led a game winning drive in quite some time.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:17 AM)

Disappointed but it's almost impossible to lose faith in Phillip Rivers. And I would say nobody was more disappointed than Rivers the other night. A lot goes into this and maybe he's trying to do too much. Rivers and Norv Turner have to figure this out together. Again, this season is not over. Hardly.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Seems like teams wait until bye weeks to make changes..any teams coming off their bye week that you see making a personnel or philisophical change this week?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:18 AM)

I think every team that goes into a bye week does a lot of self-evaluation on personnel, scheme, tendencies, etc. The last thing any team would want to do is make a coaching change either at the top or with assistants. That illustrates the sense of desperation in Philadelphia.

Mike (OKC)

Does D. Keller become a saving grace for Sanchez or does he continue to struggle even with a target like Keller?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:20 AM)

I didn't see any struggling Sanchez last week or in about half the games the Jets have played. Not saying he's a top 15 quarterback but he throws it well and Keller can help. Obviously, it was encouraging to see Shonn Greene look like the guy who lit it up as a rookie. The Jets are 3-3, right? Just like a lot of teams.

TK (Philadlephia)

Does Shurmur have ANY chance to remain HC of the Browns sans some kind of MIRACLE run to the playoffs? If/when he is let go....who do you think Haslem has his eye on?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:24 AM)

I do believe Pat Shurmur can save his job and it doesn't have to be the playoffs. I think Jimmy Haslam understands how young this team is, especially at the skill position spots, and wants to see the team making progress each week and ultimately playing consistently well the rest of the season. Who does he have his eye on? He's doing his due diligence but he wants to evaluate this staff first.

Brandon (Atlanta)

Mort, Who do you think is the best team in the nfl today

Chris Mortensen
  (11:27 AM)

I have reminded myself not to make declarations because on a week to week basis we as analysts and reporters think we know but we really don't. If there was one big game to be played, I would pick the New York Giants. I love the 49ers but what the Giants did to them last Sunday was eye-opening. I picked the Texans and 49ers to reach the Super Bowl so too early to waver from those choices. I have a feeling the Patriots - yes, the Patriots - are going to be a monster as the season moves on. I like the Bears a lot. And, yes, I like the Falcons but I don't think they're the best team in the NFL - yet.

cbrookhouzen (Chicago)

Mort, couldn't the Bears have received some sort of compensation via trade for Chris Williams instead of just releasing him? A former 1st round pk who was having a solid year at LG last year before injury should have garnered at least a 6th rd pk don't you think?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:28 AM)

You'd think so but obviously not, probably because of salary and performance.

Caught between a Rock and a Tree (Fort Lauderdale)

Bye week is killing me Mort. Which tree will give me more fruit.....Ogle TREE or Crab TREE?
