Let's get it started! Great Gig in the Sky just finished...going to be a strong chat-can feel it
But before we get started, my Rookie Report this week was just posted. I featured Bobby Wagner this week. And it dawned on me, so I posted it on Twitter (@WilliamsonNFL)...what team is getting the most from their rookie class so far this year? Seahawks, Vikes, Browns and Skins all came to mind
Matt, with John Skelton starting, do you anticipate the Cardinals getting defeated convincingly by the Vikings on Sunday?
Like the rest of the NFC West, Zona needs to keep the game close-and with their D, they are certainly capable. Skelton will make some throws too...but will miss a ton. Their Pass Pro is just total garbage. I gotta take the Vikes
2 Seattle Seahawks on your top 10 rookie report. I guess Pete Carroll does know something about drafting. Wilson was pretty solid on Sunday against NE. Now we just need to get Irvin a few more sacks so we can get 3 on your top 10 list.
Well Irvin has been on the list before. Also, I like Turbin quite a bit. Great rookie class.
Can the Patriots fix their secondary? Or are they going to have to wait for next year's draft?
Combination of two things in my mind: Need another pass rusher other than Jones and very young/poor Safeties. Just can't allow SO many big plays deep downfield-unacceptable, and that latest one vs. SEA was just awful. Fixable? I guess the Safeties will continue to get better-esp Wilson...but could be a problem all year.
Ike Taylor has finally been exposed as the most overrated CB in the NFL, right?
I don't think he was overrated in the past, but certainly having a tough year-was really rough vs. Tenn. But, again, their pass rush has been a massive problem too
What do you think of Josh Gordon's development thus far?
Was on the air in Clev last night-see if you can check it out still. But Gordon has moved along quicker than I expected. Certainly making big plays, which is great. With Weeden (instead of McCoy) and Richardson, CLEV obviously is stressing deep speed more now with Gordon and Benjamin. He fits that for sure. Still "Raw", but making plays as he is learning.
The basis of football has always been blocking and tackling, why do so many teams have trouble with both these basic fundamental football themes?
Difficult to practice tackling-and today's ball carriers are harder to get on the ground than ever. Also, I think there is a massive OL shortage in the NFL right now and what I blame first and foremost is that college OL now run so much spread that they have a ton of work to do when they enter the leage in the run game.
Does/should Greg Little still have a future in Cleveland?
Little is the old mold of what they were looking for: WCO, Run after the catch...but not real fast. Still, he has starting skills for sure...just can't catch the ball!
Is Arian Foster overrated? I feel like if you put someone like McFadden in that backfield, he would do way better.
I don't agree. I think Foster is a Top 5 RB in any system. That system/blocking certainly helps, although I think it has dropped off a bit this year from last.
Despite their issues recently, would you agree that Baltimore is still the favorite to win the AFCN?
Yes, because of their current record. But they are extremely flawed on D...and were before these latest two injuries.
What do you think is up with Matt Stafford this year?
More than ever, the opponents are taking away Calvin the best they possibly can-and moreso, they are taking away the big plays, as they have zero fear of DET's run game. The rest of the Lions weapons have not stepped up. But that doesn't excuse Stafford. We need to remember: He is still very young and only has like 33 career starts. But his fundamentals are off, esp his footwork. Also, simply trying to do too much
What is up with Tom Brady this year? It seems like he is ducking/bracing for a hit when it's not there...and the 2 intentional grounding calls...he does not look like himself.
For most of the year, I think he has looked fantastic-in total control of a difficult O to run. A Meastro. But I also agree...I think he likes getting hit much less than ever.
Bill, it appears obvious I think to any observer of Bills football that Spiller is the far superior back to Jackson, and that Gailey's approach to an even split, regardless of performance or circumstances, puts this team at a disadvantage. do you agree?
What's the bigger need for the Steelers...Oline, Dline, or secondary?
I expect the OL to come around (big picture) if they can ever stay healthy and when DeCastro returns. The Secondary needs work for sure-need a starting caliber Safety...at a minimum. But to me, the DL is the weakest spot on the team. A Smith is SO badly missed. There just isn't a difference maker in that crew-or anyone that can rush the passer even a little.
What are your thoughts on Cowboys and their running game Sunday thought Costa return really helped looked strong n did an excellent job getting to the 2nd level on zones u think something to build on or just a bad Ravens run Defense with Ngata banged up?
I very much agree that Costa's return was crucial. But for now, I am blaming the Ravens rather than praising the Cowboys. Birdies' Run D has not been strong all year...and now, it should be worse
Thoughts on Denarius Moore's development? Was last week his break-out party or just another flash in the pan?
Has a chance at greatness. Have really liked him since he came into the NFL. One huge worry: Durability
As far as rookies go...quietly Upshaw, KO, Pierce have been real solid. They might be ranked higher at the end of the year.
Not a bad group for Balt....I would way that KO's play has slipped since the beginning of the season though. Tucker too!
R. Cobb, P. Harvin, W. Welker, D. Amendola: Who is the best now and who is the best in three years? Go!
Harvin is the best now. Welker is still great, but Harvin is just outstanding and can kill a D in so many ways. I would say he is still the best in three years as well, but I am a huge Cobb fan. None of these guys are nearly as physical and strong as Harvin though.
Stan, Guy, love the show! Can my Stillers recover and make the playoffs ina weak AFC?
I believe they can...because the AFC stinks
What happened to Phillip Rivers of a few year back?
I don't think he likes getting hit any more either. When under heavy duress, he really makes some questionable throws over this past year and a half. Also, his protection/OL hasn't been very good at all...which is an obvious problem
Are the Bears the best team in the NFC?
I tend to think so. Fewest holes. But wow, that is tough. ATL, NYG, GB and SF all have legit claims too
With 6 weeks down, your NFC playoff teams are currently who?
Hmm...division winners: SF, CHI, NYG, ATL...GB and SEA as Wild Cards
"Mother did it need to be so high????"
Pains me to even type this but is Dick Lebeau's scheme the problem to Pittsburgh?
Tend to think so, but players are the bigger problem. Everyone on that D besides Timmons is either past their prime or too young. But the key to me is still pass rush....just don't have enough pass rush
Bears played one legit team (GB) and got worked pretty good...
I hear what you are saying, but you can make an argument for/against any of those top teams. Really like the Bears D a ton, which is the case with a few of those teams. Offense can be balanced.
Will you do an all rookie team?
I dunno...not a bad suggestion though
Didn't the Steelers finish 1st overall last year in points allowed? The players are the problem, not the scheme (unless you want to say the scheme doesn't fit these specific players).
I think they did, but I am not so sure that they had a GREAT D in 2011 either. Injuries as much as players I guess Raoul. How much can they expect to get out of Troy P and Harrison this year-or all going forward? Maybe Harrison rebounds huge after a long week of rest-and having Woodley on the other side finally should help. Again, not seeing anyone on DL making plays or really playing well.
Denarius Moore...greatness?? Will you please explain a little more?
Not saying he is going to be Jerry Rice, but I could see him developing into a true #1 WR-and I don't use that term lightly. Maybe a Greg Jennings type career. Great speed/verticality. Great burst, loose hips, very fluid.
does last week lend credence to Alex Smith and Mark Sanchez being more similar than not? it seems situation is critical to guys of this caliber
I have heard that comparison of late as well, but to me, here is the difference: One guy is accurate when everything is going right and one really isn't.
Will Demaryius Thomas be considered an elite (top 5) WR by the end of this season?
Seems a little lofty since he still isn't running a real diverse route tree, but I would say he is not too far off.
After 6 weeks the AFC playoff teams are...
I knew someone was going to ask that...yuck! Division winners: DEN, NENG, HOUS, BALT...wild cards: Steelers and SD...I guess
Matt, no love for the Rams rookies. Rough week for the special teams guys last week, but overall the rooks have really helped the team this year
No doubt. Future is exremely bright for STL. But I still think the teams I mentioned are getting more from their rookie class.
Just an off week for the 9ers last week? They can't be that bad on D, can they?
Certainly wasn't their best performance, but SF (and HOUS) need to play their game...and usually do. But they can't get down on the scoreboard and put added stress on their QB. Just the way it is. They are super tough to play against in close games or when they lead, but if they are down 10 in the 3rd Q, they are not built for that.
Where is Sam Bradford in your qb ranking?
Unfortunatly, not real high. Was super high on him before...and he could get back to that...but just look at his career. Honestly, he has played like three well above average games. Very few. At times, he has looked shellshocked as well behind a terrible OL. Certainly not burying him-not at all, but he hasn't stepped up like a first overall QB needs to by this point.
So does that mean you aren't a big fan of Matt Schaub?
If we did a redraft of last year's draft..your top 5? One of the best classes ever...
FANTASTIC class! Doing last year's Rookie Report was a heck of a lot different/better than this year's. QBs obviously carry the most weight, but I think my three fav players from the class are Miller, Watt and Green...those guys are no-brainer super stars. Julio is awesome. Peterson will be.
What does Andy Dalton do against the porous Pittsburgh D on Sunday night?
You guys will call me a Homer, but I am expecting massive statement games from the Steelers and Patriots this weekend. Beat downs.
Seem similar, who do you like better - Josh Gordon or Chris Givens?
Hmmm...both have long speed. I would say Givens is more explosive though, but Gordon is bigger/more physical. Tough call, but I go with Gordon because of the size I think. Tough one.
Do you cringe as I do everytime I see GB line in 3 WR sets and see Driver in the slot and Cobb on the sidelines?
You like what you've seen from the Prince so far? He and Hosley are the future at CB for NYG, and the future is bright.
Well said, but along those lines, I think Webster's play has really dropped off
Why dont you and Mike from Boca have a personal chat!!!!!!!!!!!
MfBR is my guy! Well, honestly, more often than not, I don't even read the names (sorry Mike) and just pick the first question at the top of my queue....if it is a good question
Justin Houston - What is his ceiling?
He has been great this year-and really, the end of last year too. Like him a ton. BTW, why did KC drop him into coverage so much last week? Anyhoo...I do think he benefits a great deal (like Alvin Harper a bit) from Hali, but Houston is no joke by himself-speed guy....speed to power
Blink 182 "Adam's Song"...one of you recommended Blink 182 to me last year...for that, I am very grateful
Did Shonn Greene show you anything different last week or was it more a matter of poor Colts D?
90% of it was Indy's awful interior Run D...they REALLY need a NT! But, I will say, that is the best I have seen Greene move in two years too
Felix Jones in for a huge fantasy week?
He is another guy that looked like he was running in quicksand this preseason...but looked very spry this week. So yes, should have real fine outing.
Speaking of KC- they seem to have a lot of talent on Defense... what has gone wrong for them to be this bad?
Really liked their D before the season. SO many turnovers have put that D in really tough spots, but it is more than that-they should still be better on this side of the ball. Berry isnt' the same yet-which is huge
Dolphins rookie class is producing, especially with Vernon breaking out last week. Tannehill and Martin have done well
Sure is. LOVE Tannehill! Vernon made my Honorable Mention for the first time this week.
Hey Matt....What is your Take on it...Has my Miami Dolphins at long last found Marino's replacement..!!!
Oh they sure have Tone!
Why doesn't SD rely on Ryan Mathews more? Seems so special to me!
Can be...but injured a lot and extremely difficult to rely on overall. I also don't know if he has that true Payton/Emmitt type "Give me the ball no matter what" mentaility...we shall see though...can be a Top 3 RB
How long can the Redskins go on running this College offense??
Shanny will evolve it-no question in my mind. Bet it looks WAY different at this time next year. For now-like CAR did with Newton last year-the coaching staff is wisely doing things that their rook QB is comfortable with. Good coaching.
3 most violent runners in the NFL...
Lynch, Peterson, Richardson...who am I missing?
Thought on Alex Green going forward for GBay? I am over Starks...can Green handle the load?
That we don't know, but I said it before last week that I thought Green would be better for this O than Benson. Let the guys throw-don't force the run with heavier run formations. Plus, never thought Benson fit GB's scheme all that well. Upgrade. But Handle the load? I dunno
Is there a deeper WR group than the Giants right now?? Nicks, Cruz, Hixon, Barden, Randle
That is very strong-no doubt. Some of that "Depth" has to do with who is throwing the football however
Blount, when given the opportunity
Yeah, but takes longer to gain a strong head of steam than those guys I mentioned that can just bring it right away
Also, as for hte bears being worked by the PAckers, I wouldn't say a 13 win with one coming on a fake punt not necessarily like a total beat down
Which RB fits Zona best in a trade? Ivory, Deangelo Williams, Tolbert...?
DeAngelo is by far the best of that group-and most expensive
Any thoughts How far Tannehil could possibly take the Dolphins in his Rookie season???
8-8...maybe 9-7 and a Wild Card spot...either way, DolPhans should be doing cart wheels
Besidfes Revis coming back what does the Jets D need to get back to an "elite" level?
They REALLY need a pass rusher
Ridley as well.
Love Ridley here and think he will be a great back, but I wouldn't say he is as powerful or violent as the guys I mentioned
I'll try again...any chance Brandon Jacobs gets cut? He seemed like a bad fit from the beginning. Your thoughts?
Never understood that signing one bit...doesn't fit. Cut? I wouldn't argue with it
Bruce Carter's play thus far?
Been very impressed....gives Dallas one of those great ILB pairings that never leave the field. So huge in today's NFL
Tannehill needs G Jennings. GB doesn't. Time for a trade so the Pack can reap more than a measly comp pick when he leaves as a free agent?
Great fit obviously! But GB is trying to win a Super Bowl this year ya know! Jennings can help that cause still
The Jets need a pass rusher and more team speed at LB.
Most Def...curious to see what Davis can do at ILB
Why didn't the Bears get a late pick for Williams? He was only making $1M and was serviceable last year.
Easy for us to say that. I would imagine/assume that they shopped him. He will get picked up too. FAR from great-and really doesn't have an ideal position, but I would imagine they at least made some calls before cutting him
Folks, that is a wrap! Great stuff. Adios
