Chat with Farrell Evans

Joe (Philly)

Is it jsut me or does it seem like Tiger is going for these cash grab events more than he ever used to. All this talk about joining the European Tour seems to come off as a way for him to get paid appearance fees. Did Elin really empty his wallet to the point that he needs it.

Farrell Evans
  (3:02 PM)

Joe,I'm sure Tiger likes being paid to play but it has nothing to do with his divorce settlement with Elin. He's paying her over several years, I'm sure, so all he has to do is continue his strong earning.

Lois Lane (Stormy, Hot Florida)

It was just announced NW Mutual will be primary sponsor of Tiger's World Challenge. 11 of the 12 US Ryder Cup guys will be attending, etc. Legit sources say Phil will be at Padres stadium at this same time, for the naming of the Food Court in honor of Phil Mickelson. Can you confirm the Phil part?

Farrell Evans
  (3:03 PM)

I can't confirm Phil's location at the time of Tiger's tournament.

Michael C. (Westport, CT)

Is there a caddie school that A-Rod could apply to?

Farrell Evans
  (3:05 PM)

A-Rod had a lot of good years. But his skills have been diminishing for some time.

James L. (Lexington)

Caddie school.... how about Bob Rotella?

Farrell Evans
  (3:08 PM)

I'm not sure that Rotella's philosophy on performance would help A-Rod.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Farrell, do you see next year being the same type of year for Tiger where he wins 3-4 events but doesnt come through @ Majors? It seems like he has gotten better each year during his "3 year slump". Is 2013 the year he captures 15 and if so, where?

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

Steven,I have no doubt that Tiger will win three or four times in 2013. But I'm concerned about how he will handle the pressure of the majors. It seems funny to ask a question like that of someone who has 14 majors, but for some reason, probably nerves, in these four weeks he's been very inconsistent from round to round.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

On behalf of a disgruntled Yankee fan...lets leave A-rod and the yanks out of this chat...thank you...

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

Agreed. Who is the A-Rod of golf?

Jeff (Sacramento)

What happened to Spencer Levin? I remember he missed one of the Fed Ex playoff events for a death in the family and haven't seen him since.

Farrell Evans
  (3:13 PM)

Jeff,Spencer tore a ligament in his left thumb last month during a casual round of golf. He's out for the remainder of the year.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

is Tiger vs. Rory a better storyline as Phil vs. Tiger? i know Tiger is in a different stage in his career but it seems that if Tiger can embrace the challenge-it could prove to be the catalyst (or impediment) to his chase of Jacks record! your thoughts?

Farrell Evans
  (3:18 PM)

I have written on this site that Rory will be the main obstacle in the way of Tiger passing Jack's record. I think golf fans would love to see Tiger and Phil in a Sunday duel in Amen Corner at the Masters or in the Open Championship, but Rory McIlroy is likely to screw up that perfect scenario.

Clark Kent (Krypton)

Tiger doesn't need to embrace any challenge. He gives it 1000% every time he plays, as opposed to the kid saying meaningless Turkey grab (utter failure) is OK to say he's tired. Tiger would've gotten REAMED by the press if he said that. True competitor, Tiger is.

Farrell Evans
  (3:21 PM)

True. Tiger plays to win, regardless of the setting. But I'm sure he's a lot more laid back at these silly season events. Because it really doesn't matter how he plays now. He knows the real time for him to peak is around the first weekend of April.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Hold on.....if Lee Westwood is A-Rod then that means that Lee westwood will win 1 major!

Farrell Evans
  (3:23 PM)

Exactly. A-Rod has a World Series ring that he needed a lot of help to get. Perhaps, Westwood will get Ernie-Els-sized gift like a player falling apart down the stretch to give him his first major. No one said that it had to be pretty.

Andrew (WI)

Greg Norman is the A-Rod of golf. They both did get to the peak of their sport (a couple of Opens for Norman, one WS for A-Rod), top player, maligned in big monents, etc etc

steven in orlando [via mobile]

A-rod of golf-obviously its tough to make a fair comparison-but over the past 5 years...Lee Westwood! guy has had a chance to win a major or two but...sorry A-rod...you just know he is going to choke!!!

Farrell Evans
  (3:24 PM)

How about Sergio Garcia? He's been great and famous for a long time. And he doesn't have a major.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Tiger doesnt need to embrace a challenge? The reason he has won 14 and will probably pass Jacks record is BECAUSE HE EMBRACED THE CHALLENGE! he is the master @ embracing a challenge and then overcoming it!

Farrell Evans
  (3:25 PM)

Steven,You obviously have a lot of respect for TW.

Lois Lane (Stormy Florida)

Thx for answering my question. The part about Phil was a joke. Tiger was ASKED about possibly joining EURO Tour. He NEVER said he was actually thinking about it. More media hype, starting rumors. Cash grabs galore, more? Not true. Just mentioned, since the vitriol re: Tiger continues, almost 36 months later. Westwood etc., always play the Cash grabs, yet they are not villified. Pls inform public that most lesser named Euro Tour pros, as well as the higher known ones, all get appearance fees. Thanks.

Farrell Evans
  (3:29 PM)

Thanks Lois Lane. There is nothing wrong with players taking cash to play. I think every player that makes a PGA Tour field should get a minimum of $3,000. Whether they make the cut or not, they have provided entertainment for paying customers and they should be rewarded for their labor in some way. It's a great labor model for the PGA Tour. Those folks who watched so-and so player shoot 75 on Thursday and Friday still bought beers and hotdogs and a ticket to the event.

Clark Kent (Krypton: In a Phone Booth Together!)

Stephen in Orlando seems to be a TW fan, as am I. Somehow he thinks we are on oppossite sides. Couldn't be further from the truth!

Farrell Evans
  (3:32 PM)

As one American citizen asked Obama and Romney last night, "please explain your differences from the other man?' What does a real TW fan look like? Are you the guy that believes that Tiger walks on water no matter how shallow the pond? Or do you treat him like a human being who makes an occasional bogey and cusses a little bit, but you still love him?

James L. (Lexington)

David Duval is the A-Rod of golf... from a performance standpoint. Although, they have very different personas.

Farrell Evans
  (3:35 PM)

That's a fair comparison. They have both been great and in great physical shape. Now one is out of shape but happier and the other one is still in great shape but can't play.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

i respect that he is not A-Rod.....he makes them when they count!!!

Farrell Evans
  (3:36 PM)

Steven,Wait a minute! Tiger HAS made them when they counted. But what has he done lately? Tiger has left his share of runners on base, too. All those missed short putts.

Clark Kent (Krypton)

Who do you have as front runners in the CIMB Classic in Malaysia next week? Also, the next day TW & RM play the one day Jincha Lake Match Play event..any thoughts about the winner?

Farrell Evans
  (3:39 PM)

Clark Kent,I like Bo Van Pelt, the defending champion and the man with a tour-leading ten top 10s this season. Sure he doesn't win a lot, but one of these days his putter is going to get hot and he's going to reel off three or four wins in a year. At 37, it's not too late for him.

Clark Kent/Lois Lane (Krypton: In a Phone Booth Together!)

Great answer. I treat TW like a human being....like you said, and it was beautiful. We wouldn't have wars or hate if everyone thought like you just typed. Thanks so much. PS: He is gorgeous to watch, tho.

Farrell Evans
  (3:42 PM)

Clark Kent,But Tiger is going to always have haters. They show up on chats and in comments section, but for the most part they give him his due respect at tournaments. What kind of sports fan hates greatness?

Lana Lang (Smallville)

Oops, forgot about Bo. Perfect answer.

Farrell Evans
  (3:43 PM)

Bo is the real deal. Great driver, great iron player, so-so putter. Nice putting stats this year, but he missed too many putts down the stretch.

Jimmy Olsen (The Daily Planet)

Any chance anyone from ESPN will have any reporters covering the CIMB Classic, etc. overseas? Much more impartial reporting. I don't mean live TV analysis, just articles, etc. by ESPN staff.

Farrell Evans
  (3:51 PM)

Jimmy,We'll be watching the event very closely and doing commentary.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

tiger is no saint but the dude IS a great golfer.

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

Agreed. And besides you can't spend most of every waking day of your life playing golf and ever be considered for sainthood. Now you might be considered if you built golf courses in poor countries all over the world for no fee and helped to build the economy with those courses. But that's another conversation.

Ed (Long Island)

Last year you wrote a few player profiles over the slow season, are you bringing that back? You did a good job on that.

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Ed,Thanks for reminding me of that. Just for you, I'll revamp that. This week I did something on Jonas Blixt. Nice kid.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

I was talking about A-rod not making it when it counts....like the playoffs (with 2009 being the exception).

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

I know that's what you were saying but it's fair to ask that question of Tiger, too. At least the recent vintage of Tiger.

Farrell Evans
  (4:02 PM)

My time is up. I'll be back with you at the same time, same place, God-willing, next week. Take care.
