Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (1:59 PM)

Greetings, everybody. Hey, I'm on time for a change. It's a miracle. We have a lot of questions lined up, so let's get started.

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, Last years game @ NE Greene rushed 21-82 yds and Sanchez was 16-26 with 2 TD's and no turnovers. Can they take that same approach this year? WE all know the Pats secondary stinks but to we have the passing game to attack it or are they better off just trying to control the clock and keeping the Pats oofesne off the field. I have a hard time thinking the Jets defense will be able to slow down the Pats offense. This is a bad matchup for the Jets. Agree?

Rich Cimini
  (2:01 PM)

Yep, Ira, it's a bad matchup. I don't see the Jets deviating too much on offense. They'll stick with ground and pound and take an occasional deep shot. You're right, the NE secondary is terrible, but I just don't think the Jets are built to exploit that.

Carmine Carcieri (Lincoln)

Will Holmes or Revis travel with the Jets to New England this weekend?

Rich Cimini
  (2:02 PM)

No. Injured players don't travel -- only in rare cases.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

When will we see Tim Tebow as the Quarterback for the New York Jets?

Rich Cimini
  (2:03 PM)

Only when Rex Ryan is absolutely desperate and/or when Woody Johnson insists on it. If they lose the next 2, that might qualify as desperate.

John (Hillsdale NJ)

Hey, Rich. What's the scoop on Pouha's back injury? Is this a long term injury we could be looking at?

Rich Cimini
  (2:05 PM)

Clearly, it's more serious than the team is letting on. It's weird: I see Sione out there at practice every day. Looks good in individual/positional drills, but doesn't do any team drills. They must be concerned about him making it worse or else he'd be out there.

Derek Hamilton (The Great White North)

How are the Jets going to combat the no huddling cheaters in New England? Can the D play at that speed? Is Pouha playing this week?

Rich Cimini
  (2:06 PM)

Po'uha is highly doubtful. How do you combat the no-huddle? YOu have to get the play in quickly, get it communicated (that's Harris job) and get everybody set. They might tweak substitution packages to cover their bases.

Marco (Bloomfield, NY)

Rich - Your overall views of Austin Howard? I think, for the most part, he's done pretty well. Also, do you think we re-sign Mike DeVito? I would love to see him back, his attitude and leadership to the line would be missed in my opinion.

Rich Cimini
  (2:08 PM)

I think Howard has been a pleasant surprise. He struggles against outside speed, but he's held up reasonably well. I don't see DeVito back, which is unfortunate because he's their most consistent lineman. Brings it every day. But Coples will start next yr.

Hi Rich- interesting column on Kevin O'Connell/potential Tebow trade, yesterday. Is there a slight chance this could indicate they have had an offer(s) for McElroy. And on this subject, do you see the Jets making any trade before the deadline. Thanks

Rich Cimini
  (2:10 PM)

I know I speculated on a possible Tebow trade, but after checking the last two days, I think it has to do more with Tebow moving into a non-QB role because of the RB injuries. I don't think we'll see Powell until after the bye, and maybe the same for McKnight.

kman (NYC)

Rich, do you see an improvement in the locker room atmosphere without Holmes around? And, why do you think Tomlinson is so vocal in bashing Sanchez? With the exception of Tiki on Eli, I can't remember a former player so harsh on their QB. I have lost all respect for LT.

Rich Cimini
  (2:13 PM)

I'm sure Holmes' absence creates less stress for Sanchez -- on and off the field. He doesn't have to always worry about keeping Holmes happy. LT is in the media now and he's just trying to create a name for himself.

K. Klemmons (Oregon)

Any chance John Conner will be re-signed with the Jets?

Rich Cimini
  (2:14 PM)

Not anytime soon. Because of rules, he can't re-sign until Week 15 at the earliest.

Fielde (CT)

Dwayne Bowe is apparently asking to be traded from KC. With the Jets desperate need at WR, any chance we could get him?

Rich Cimini
  (2:15 PM)

I don't see that happening at all. The JEts have $7M+ invested in Holmes next yr and a 2nd round pick invested in Hill, with Kerley as the No. 3.

C. Sheets (Long Island)

What's up with the Jets interest in Kevin O'Connell? Could it mean they're looking to trade or cut McElroy?

Rich Cimini
  (2:16 PM)

They won't get rid of McElroy, especially not for O'Connell. They're formulating a contingency plan just in case Tebow has to take more of a non-QB role, which could be the case this weekend.

Jimmy (Huntington)

Rich, With 2 Rb's banged up and out this week, I find it odd that the Jets didn't bring in any free agent RB's. Instead they bring in a back up QB........Heard a rumbling that Dwayne Bowe is unhappy in KC....wants a new contract......does Trader Mike step in and add this quality WR to give Sanchez a weapon?

Rich Cimini
  (2:17 PM)

They didn't bring in any RB insurance because Tebow is their RB insurance.

Angelo (Philadelphia, PA)

What's your sense of how Sanchez has handled the pressure/scrutiny this season? Surely he's aware of people calling for his job, having the worst completion percentage in football, etc. Does he seem to be handling himself differently compared to years past?

Rich Cimini
  (2:18 PM)

Good question, Angelo. Based on performance, he hasn't handled it well, last week notwithstanding. Off the field, he has remained remarkably upbeat. No woe-is-me stuff.

S. Martin (Nesconset, NY)

What has happened with Cromartie since Revis went down? He's playing at a rather high level... something we haven't seen with him in a while. And certainly more physical than we've ever seen him.

Rich Cimini
  (2:19 PM)

You're right, he has raised his game. Still vulnerable to double moves, but overall he has been their defensive MVP -- maybe the team MVP.

A. Dolof (CT)

Will Keller ever be anything more than a decent TE? He seems to have the talent to be great, but he's never taken it to that level. Will it ever happen?

Rich Cimini
  (2:21 PM)

It's unfair to judge him now because he's coming off an injury. He's a good receiving TE and I suspect he'll come on in the second half of the season. He'll make a lot of money next year if he hits the open market.

Paul-Michael (Staten Island)

Do you see Maybin returning after this season if he continues to be a non-factor in the pass rush?

Rich Cimini
  (2:22 PM)

Can't see Maybin back here -- unless he lights it up over the next 10 games.

Mr Dolof (Glory, CT)

Hey Rich, since Tebow is an athlete, and since he now knows how to block, have the Jets ever thought of using him as a 2nd TE weapon sometime split out. Maybe he can be like our Aaron Hernandez?

Rich Cimini
  (2:23 PM)

Whoa, he wouldn't be another Hernandez -- not nearly the athlete AH is. The only thing they have in common is an alma mater.

Bryan (CT)

So after 6 games how do you grade Coples? Hindsight being 20/20, does it look like Melvin Ingram or a Chandler Jones, or D'onta Hightower would have been a better fit or more productive in this Jet defense?

Rich Cimini
  (2:24 PM)

Fair question, Bryan. I thought Ingram would've been a better fit for the Jets, but they were scared off by his size and short arms. Jones would be a tweener in the Jets' scheme. He fits NE because they're using a 4-3.

John (Hillsdale NJ)

Do you see Tebow getting a more touches this week with McKnight and Powell out? Would be nice to give him some good playing time this week so see what he can do.

Rich Cimini
  (2:26 PM)

I can see Tebow getting a few more touches, but I think this whole RB is being overblown. I DO NOT see him getting handoffs from Sanchez. Running out of shotgun, yes, but not as a traditional RB.

Geoff (Livingston, NJ)

Jets are tied for first (and last place) in their division. After seeing them play for 6 weeks, what do you think their final record will be? Any chance they can sneak into the playoffs?

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

I doubt it. Before the season, I thought they'd be 4-4 at the bye, which is a very good possibility. I also had them at 8-8. If they do better than 8-8, Ryan should get some coach of the year consideration.

Steve (Flushing)

It seems like the Colts had a lot of success using the no huddle against the Jets. Do you think the Patriots may game plan to consistently no huddle?

Rich Cimini
  (2:28 PM)

Knowing Belichick, yes. But I also think the Pats can hurt the Jets with their ground game.

Kevin (Boston)

Rich, after a shaky week vs. SF, I did not hear Kyle Wilson's name called the past two weeks. I am surprised that he has not been targeted more. Is he improving?

Rich Cimini
  (2:29 PM)

Yes, he's getting better, but the real test comes this week.

Austin (DC)

Do you think the Jets are mismanaging Tebow? Should he request a trade? Seems like becoming an RB could ruin his career.

Rich Cimini
  (2:30 PM)

Believe me, he's not going to become a RB.

Mike (Garden City, NY)

What do you think of Coples progress so far this season?

Rich Cimini
  (2:30 PM)

Slow. Last week was encouraging.

Neil (NYC)

Didnt Cromartie get roasted pretty good by the Houston TE on that long TD?

Rich Cimini
  (2:30 PM)

It wasn't his fault. The Jets were in cover 3 and the midle safety, I think LAndry, blew a coverage.

Rich Cimini
  (2:31 PM)

Sorry, to cut it shorter than usual, but that's all I have for today. Promise to do more next week. Just a busy, busy day today. Thanks for the questions. Rich
