Chat with Edward Aschoff

Edward Aschoff
  (12:02 PM)

Greetings everyone. I hope you all had a great weekend and all of your teams won. Let's talk some SEC football, shall we?

Frank (New Jersey)

The best of Georgia teams of past have often lost to some of the worst Florida teams of past...what shred of hope does Georgia have this weekend against one of the most complete Gator teams in a long time (ps. this Georgia fan thinks this Georgia team is about as paper tiger as they come)....

Edward Aschoff
  (12:04 PM)

Well, I don't think this is the most complete Gators team in a long time. 2008 and 2009 were pretty good. But I think Georgia has to limit turnover. Florida's defense has been great all season and the Gators capitalize on turnovers like it's no one's business. Georgia has a tendency to press in big games, and no game is bigger than this one. Force Florida to pass and shut down Gillislee. Make the defense work a little harder than it has to. Control the field position. A win is out there for the Bulldogs.

Scratches (D'ham, NC)

Is there any other starting QB in the country that's played every game and hasn't thrown an INT like AJ McCarron?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:06 PM)

Louisiana Tech's Colby Cameron has yet to throw an interception in seven games this fall. He also has 20 touchdown passes. Still, McCarron is doing this in the SEC. He's been extremely impressive this year and showed everyone that he can pass when needed. But many of us knew he could already do that ...

Darren (Decatur, Georgia)

Edward, am I crazy to think that Texas A&M might be the tougher challenge to BAMA over Miss St. and LSU? I say that because I don't think Miss St. can handle BAMA's physicality and LSU just can't pass? A

Edward Aschoff
  (12:07 PM)

Well, I do think that defense will give Bama more fits, but Tennessee had the league's best passing game and it couldn't do much to Alabama's defense at all. I think the running option Manziel has will give this team fits at first, but this unit adjusts so well that Manziel will have to find other ways of hurting this defense. He hasn't been great against stout defenses like Florida and LSU.

Red Devil (Washington, DC)

Clearly Nick Saban is making blood sacrifices to his dark lord to continue the epic run his team is on... but tell me this: who wins in a matchup of the Devil (Saban) and the Wizard (Bill Snyder: Magician)? If the Wizard can conjure game-changing players from JUCO/zero star players, perhaps he could defeat Little Nicky's accursed minions...

Edward Aschoff
  (12:09 PM)

Ha, that's just funny. Seriously though, I just don't see Kansas State matching up with Alabama physically. I know we harp on it a lot around here, but play up front is the difference. I just don't think Kansas State has what it takes to hold its own against Alabama's lines. And those Bama linebackers would probably be able to keep Klein in check. Just don't see KSU getting it done.

Scratches (D'ham, NC)

Does Auburn have a shot at winning any SEC games this year? Only 3 teams left on the schedule are TAMU, Georgia, and Alabama.

Edward Aschoff
  (12:10 PM)

If it doesn't beat Texas A&M Saturday, I don't see it happening at all. The Aggies have the offense to just gut Auburn's defense, like most teams have, and the Tigers aren't beating Alabama or Georgia.

Bulldogs (Starkville)

The Athletic department department at Tennessee has faced many budget challenges over the past few years, and their woes continue. They have put up some of the highest deficits in the SEC in recent years. That being said, do you see a scenario where UT opts to keep Dooley even if he posts a 6-7, 7-6, or 5-7 season?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:13 PM)

It might be hard for Dave Hart to fire Dooley if money is such an issue. That $5 million buyout isn't cheap, especially with the school still paying Fulmer and Pearl. Also, do you fire Dooley if you don't already have a top-notch coach all but locked up? If he gets to seven wins and then wins the bowl, I think he stays. If he can't get to eight, it's going to be very tricky with that money issue in Knoxville. But I've said that I think he was handed nothing and has slowly helped this program out. But what do I know?

Harrison (New York)

More important game: Florida v.Georgia or Mississippi St.v Alabama?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:13 PM)

Florida-Georgia. It's essentially for the East. If Florida loses, everything this team worked for is basically gone. If Georgia wins, the Bulldogs control the East. Funny how it works out sometimes ...

Scratches (D'ham, NC)

Would this season be any different for Auburn if Zeke Pike was still around for them? Their QB play has been ugly, and any different from what they have now has to be an improvement. Would Pike have helped them get an extra win this season?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:15 PM)

He certainly couldn't have been any worse, right? He had the physical tools to run Loeffler's offense, so it certainly hurts that he's not on the field with how bad the QB play has been on the Plains this season. I'm sure the staff would love to have him (if he hadn't have had his off-field issues) right now.

Phillip (Alabama)

Hey Ed, with how things have been going at Auburn should I jump on the Crimson Tide bandwagon like everybody else?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:16 PM)

Ouch. That bad that you would change allegiances? Were you are real Auburn fan to begin with? You don't see me jumping on the Falcons' bandwagon because the Panthers are awful? I'm not even close to rooting for the San Francisco Giants just because the Rockies stink. Man up and root for your team.

Chase ((Commerce,GA))

Do you blame Mark Richt for not having yet won a national championship at Georgia?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:18 PM)

I don't blame any one person for things like this. Richt brought in the athletes, but he doesn't throw the passes or rush the quarterback. A lot more goes into it than just the head coach. I think it's been a collective effort, but Richt does deserve some of the blame. He has the entire state of Georgia to recruit from and he hasn't won a title. Just can't believe it

Edward Aschoff
  (12:18 PM)

Bulldogs (Starkville)

How about some love for LaDarius Perkins! He is one of the best RB in the league statistically and is also tops All-Purpose yardage! Yet nobody talks about him...

Edward Aschoff
  (12:21 PM)

He has the most rushing yards in the SEC as well. It's funny, people at Mississippi State were giddy about Nick Griffin, but he hasn't really played much at all. Perkins has been running over guys and has the ability to run right by them as well. I've been very impressed with him. That running game hasn't missed a beat with Vick Ballard being gone. Barring injury, he's easily a 1,000-yard rusher. He'll have a tough time, though, this weekend against Alabama.

White Flame (Ozarks)

Dash-Arkansas might be getting back to form with a bye week and the last few weeks the Off playing to expectations, if Arkansas wins out which I think they could, could they get back into contention for like the Cotton Bowl?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:22 PM)

I don't think this team is going back to the Cotton Bowl and I don't think it's winning out, either. LSU might not have a great passing offense, but that defense is great. Plus, South Carolina and Mississippi State are still on the schedule. Those aren't guaranteed for either, but I don't know what Arkansas' offense can do against those defenses. This weekend is a must-win for Arkansas if you ask me.

James (Versailles, KY)

It seems like Rich Brooks laid a decent foundation for Joker Phillips to build upon. Why hasn't Phillips been able to succeed at UK? Do UK fans have anything to look forward to the rest of the season and beyond?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:24 PM)

Injuries have really hurt this team the last two years. Also, this team is very, very young. Depth was an issue this year. And think about all the offensive playmakers this team lost after the 2010 season (its last bowl season). There wasn't a ton for Phillips to really work with the last two years and it's been a real uphill battle. The good news is that all of those young players are getting a lot of work this year, so that's a positive.

Stew (Charlotte)

Is Chris Low crazy? He's got Arkansas going to a bowl this year. In order for that to happen they must win either @USC, @Miss St. or home against LSU

Edward Aschoff
  (12:25 PM)

It's possible that Arkansas could get one there. Has to beat Ole Miss as well. It'll be tough, but it isn't impossible. Plus, this team is playing much better now.

Jason (Cleveland, OH)

Ed, I still hear lots of talk that Alabama's offensive line isn't playing up to potential in the running game. Do you agree? If so...how good will they be if that happens???

Edward Aschoff
  (12:26 PM)

Ummmmmm have seen the line in the last two games? More than 200 rushing yards in back-to-back games. And Tennessee barely got pressure on McCarron Saturday. That line was outstanding over the weekend in pass and run protection.

MikeDaTiger (Baton Rouge)

Dash, is it LSU's turn to dominate Bama, Bama will be coming off a emotional game vs Miss State and if they do does that put LSU back in the Top 2?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:27 PM)

I dont see anyone dominating in that game. But you can't count the Tigers out, even if that passing game is hard to look at. I think if LSU's defense can hold the offense in check, we'll see another game like we did last year in December. Could look like the Florida-LSU game. Turnovers will be the difference.

Augusta Dawg (Augusta)

Ed, how do you think the Georgia RBs stack up against Florida's LBs? Do you see Georgia's LB's being able to stop the running game of Driskel and Gillislee?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:30 PM)

Florida has just swallowed up the run this year, but this duo is pretty, pretty good. Now, it was held in check against Kentucky, but the Bulldogs opted to throw more. This offensive matchup will be great to watch because I don't know if Florida will get into its mode of killing teams with man coverage. The Bulldogs have a lot of talent at wide receiver and Florida will have to respect that. But Florida's linebackers have been excellent this season and Jelani Jenkins doesn't seem to mind playing with a cast. I give Florida the advantage and I give the Gators the advantage running the ball. Georgia's front has just not played that well this season. It's been very odd. A healthy Jarvis Jones helps, but who knows how healthy he'll be?

Daniel (Birmingham)

Is the 3+ TD line on the Alabama vs. Mississippi State game good, or is Ms. St. being way underrated?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:30 PM)

I'm surprised it's that high. I think Mississippi State is better than that. But the Bulldogs really haven't played anyone outside of the SEC and I think people are concerned about that. If Mississippi State is going to win it has to put pressure on Alabama's backfield. It hasn't done that consistently this season.

Manic Works Out (Cajun Country)

Do you think it might be time for Coach Miles to side-line Mettenberger ... and give Rivers a chance at center?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:32 PM)

Miles is very, very loyal to his quarterbacks ... almost to a fault. We've seen it plenty of times with him. I think he'll ride Mettenberger as long as he can. Injury will be the only thing that I think gets Mettenberger benched. Well, unless he just starts chucking interceptions left and right.

Darren (Decatur, Georgia)

Ed, I know the two Miss St. corners are good and all but I'll take Dee Milliner over anyone else. His ball skills are great and he tackles well. Opposing offenses haven't had success throwing to his side of the field.

Edward Aschoff
  (12:33 PM)

Johnthan Banks my friend. He's tremendous in coverage and is a big play waiting ot happen when he touches the ball. I'll take Banks, but both are great.

Tyler (Florida)

Ed, I have always wondered why does Florida never schedule any good quality non-conference opponents, they usually schedule FCS teams or non AQ schools??

Edward Aschoff
  (12:35 PM)

You and me both brother. It's been like 20 years since Florida has played a quality nonconference team outside of the state of Florida. The Gators only play tough nonconference games in state -- Florida State and Miami. Hopefully that will change with the playoff coming. I think they feel that with FSU on the schedule and playing in the SEC is enough when it comes to tough scheduling ...

Zack (Tampa)

Do you think the Gator's secondary will be able to keep pace with a very experienced QB in UGA's Aaron Murray? I know they adjusted well after halftime to Tyler Bray, but Murray is definitely a cut above him.

Edward Aschoff
  (12:36 PM)

Look at Florida's success against him in the past? He hasn't exactly been great against the Gators. Florida's secondary will have a challenge on its hands, but it won't have to worry about keeping up with Murray.

RollBamaRoll (PA)

Dash, long time no chat been busy, anyways, Did you hear AJ McCarron got bite by a Cobra and after 5 long days of pain the Cobra finally died, what are your thoughts?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:36 PM)

Impressive.

FuriousGamecock (Chicago)

Hi, Ed, that performance by SC was one of the most pathetic efforts I've ever seen from a talented football team. They just deflated. Is it time for SC to start thinking about some coaching changes? If so, whose seat is hottest?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:37 PM)

I don't think anyone should get fired at South Carolina for that loss. South Carolina had a ton of injuries to deal with. And coaches don't fumble the ball like that ... Look at the players first.

Edward Aschoff
  (12:38 PM)

Also, South Carolina's defense played very well. Florida only had 183 yards of offense. The offense was smothered, but Florida has done that all season.

Jessica (Arkansas)

Do you think Auburn would hire Petrino now? I have heard some rumblings.

Edward Aschoff
  (12:39 PM)

Petrino coming back to the SEC ... I've expressed my feelings about this plenty of times. Would an SEC school really want his baggage? Is it worth throwing your integrity out the window to get more wins? Maybe to some schools it it is, but there are other coaches out there who could win in the SEC. I don't think Petrino should be at the top of any SEC school's list.

Bulldogs (Starkville)

What are the chances of Vandy winning out? So long as they beat Ole Miss away and UT at home, I think they have a good chance. 8-4 Vandy? The world MUST end in 2012!

Edward Aschoff
  (12:41 PM)

It's possible, especially with that defense. But the Commodores have to go on the road in three of their final five games. Ole Miss has struggled against the Dores lately, but this is a new team. Vandy is good, but I don't see it happening. I see at least three more wins.

Steve (Virginia)

Ed, that Florida loss was bad for the Gamecocks. But now they get to start playing at home again where they have been dominant (just can't seem to recreate that magic on the road). Do you think the Gamecocks could win out the rest of the season with a victory on the road against Clemson? Best of ACC = Middle of the SEC.

Edward Aschoff
  (12:44 PM)

If that offense doesn't get any better, it'll be hard. Arkansas is playing better and Clemson is doing pretty well since losing to Florida State. This team has to get healthy before it can think about winning out. Plus, that early game against Tennessee is gonna be tough. Will this team be up for that game after basically losing out on the East last weekend?

Joey (Library)

Hey Dash! 3 games into the season I sold almost all my belongings and bought SEC Championship game tickets. Is there any HOPE for my GameCocks or am I going to be putting these on ebay?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:44 PM)

E.B.A.Y.

Marilyn (San Antonio, TX)

Some people are already throwing Kevin Sumlin under the bus. I personally think he's doing a great job given all the situations (freshman QB, conference change, etc...). How do you think he's doing?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:46 PM)

Who in the world would throw him under the bus??? His only losses are to No. 2 Florida and No. 6 LSU by a combined eight points. That's just silly talk. Everything is brand new in College Station and he has the No. 20 team in the country. He deserves nothing but praise at this point.

Michael (Starkville)

Can we please stop hearing about how amazing Manziel is now? The guy puts up gaudy numbers against terrible defenses, plays much farther into blow out games than he should, then can't perform against any above-average defense. Overrated.

Edward Aschoff
  (12:47 PM)

Mississippi State will find out everything it needs to know about Johnny Football in due time. You can't help but be impressed with what he's done. He had never thrown a college pass until the Florida game. Too many haters in the world these days, but as Kat Williams said "Let they do they ... job"

Kyle Christy (Gainesville)

Am I the best punter in the country?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:47 PM)

Yes. Not really anything I can add to that ...

Jed Clampett (Mississippi Red Clay Hills)

Hello there Ed, how does A.J. McCarron and the Bama recieving core stack up against the MSST secondary?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:49 PM)

I think Mississippi State's secondary is more proven, but if McCarron gets time to throw, he'll be able to make plays. Amari Cooper is stepping up very well, and Alabama loves throwing it down to its RBs, which will take that secondary out of the game. The edge goes to Mississippi State, but I think Alabama comes out running in order to wear down that front.

Johnny on the Spot (North Carolina)

Ed, are too many guys on the Georgia D playing for the NFL? Do you see any way they finally become the defense of old?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:51 PM)

I don't know what it is with that defense. It has to be mental because that whole unit is essentially back. Jarvis Jones has been hurt and not having the secondary in tact for the first part of the season didn't help, but come on. It's the middle of the season. This unit has to play better.

Rick (Some Prison Outside Atlanta)

So Ed, I finally was able to get some free time away froma needy pregant wife and those pesky walkers and find a computer. Who do you think has a tougher next couple of months my buddy Hershel on one leg during the zombie apocalypse or Mississippi State and the lack of respect they seem to never get?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:53 PM)

First off, I love the new you. The attitude will get you a long way during a zombie apocalypse. Keep it up! Secondly, I think it's going to be Hershel. A one-legged man just isn't fit to survive a zombie attack. Shane proved that when he took out one of Hershel's own last season. Mississippi State can lose this game this weekend and still win nine or 10 games. It's going to be tough, but the talent is there for this team to finally get back to double-digit wins. I don't think Hershel has double-digit days left in him ...

Mike (Atlanta, GA)

Ed, look at Lousianana Tech now without Dooley..they are winning! He can bring talent in but cannot coach them up. He seems destined as a assistant under Saban when he gets fired? Who would TN throw some feelers out on? Mullen? Strong? Golden?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:54 PM)

IF Tennessee decides to part ways with Dooley, I think the top choice has to be Jon Gruden. He has a lot of ties to Tennessee and East Tennessee. He'd be interested in the job if it came open, but I"m sure he'd be asking for a lot of $$$$$

Tiger Gombo (Baton Rouge)

Hi Ed Chris answered htis and I want your anser cuz we want to no about you guys...do you like your tater tots with cheese, chilly or just plane?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:55 PM)

Cheese. Nuff said.

Shane (OKC)

Let's say Florida goes undefeated in the SEC (including a win over undefeated Alabama in the SEC championship), but loses to FSU. Assuming FSU also wins out, which one loss team plays for the National Championship?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:57 PM)

Florida would need a lot of help from other teams losing to make it to the national championship. I'm sure the Gators would get a lot of help from the computers if Alabama and FSU only had one loss, but teams like Oregon, Kansas State, Oregon State and Notre Dame would have to lose as well. Imagine if Florida beating Bama actually hurts the SEC? Wow

Donald (West Virginia)

if MISS ST can give BAMA a run for its money, or even maybe upset them. do you think it will affect their play going into Baton Rouge. Or could BAMA overlook MISS ST and get beat... GEAUX LSU

Edward Aschoff
  (12:58 PM)

Nick Saban doesn't overlook opponents, so that means his team doesn't either. Don't count on this team not being focused for the No. 11 team in the country. Now, that doesn't mean that Mississippi State can't challenge Bama. having such a physical game before LSU isn't ideal, but Saban should be able to work through it.

pierre (lakeland, fl) [via mobile]

Ed how does it feel to be kicking Chris's butt in picks thanks to lsu?

Edward Aschoff
  (12:59 PM)

It feels great. I'm not totally calling this one over, but Chris sure is scrambling these days ...

The Mayans (South America)

Are we right about 2012? Will there be another all SEC National Championship Game to bring the world to an end?

Edward Aschoff
  (1:00 PM)

Ha. I think it would, but I don't see it happening this season. Unless FLorida and Bama are both undefeated and the loser in Atlanta loses by only a little or LSU runs the table and Bama stays unbeaten after losing to LSU. Those are the only scenarios I see.

Mike (Atlanta, GA)

Is Gruden realistic though? Seems like a fantasy pick there

Edward Aschoff
  (1:00 PM)

He has ties to the state and the program. Met his wife will working on Tennessee's staff.

Bulldog love (Mississippi)

As a life-long State fan, I know my "place" in the SEC. We have been around and down for long enough to have realistic expectations. My question is, do you see this as a bad thing? Mullen has tried to change our perspective but we still see Bama and LSU as big brothers on the schedule. Do you think that it hurts our chances to win the game at all?

Edward Aschoff
  (1:02 PM)

Well, I don't think players consider themselves Bama's little brothers. If they did, they'd have no chance in this game. They think they are better than Bama, and that's a good thing. You have to like that confidence. Without it, this team would already be behind before the game even started. Mullen has certainly raised expectations throughout the entire program.

Edward Aschoff
  (1:03 PM)

OK, it's $5 burrito day at Moe's so I'm off to fill my stomach. Great chat as always. Let's do it again soon!
