Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Yeah boooy! The fastest hour in golf is here again. Ready? Bring it!First question for y'all: How in the world did the final round Sunday at McGladry get played in less than 4 hours?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who was the last golfer to be suspended from the PGA Tour and why?

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

The Tour never publishes when they suspend a player and why. The only way the media finds out is if the player talks about it, which most don't. So the answer is... we don't know.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Mike, bigger potential story in 2013...Tiger wins 1st major in 4years or Rory wins 3rd in consecutive years?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Man that's a tough one! Only 43 dudes have 3 or more majors so for Rory to get his 3rd this fast (especially if it's at Augusta), but if Tiger gets #15 and now he's only 3 back of Jack and still ahead of schedule that may just eek out Rory.

Chris (Chicago)

A friend of mine and I got into an argument regarding Nike and how they dumped Lance Armstrong but not Tiger following his transgressions. I contended 2 very different circumstances and that in the end, Tiger still will make Nike money, Lance won't. Should Nike have kept Tiger?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

Tiger didn't cheat on the game of golf.Armstrong is retired, pretty easy decision for Nike and I think they made the right call.

Nick (Washington DC)

Do you think Jim Furyk deserves to be in the HOF if he doesnt win again? I feel like hall of fame should entail some form of dominance at one time, and he never really did that.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

16 wins including a major... that's one more than Fred Couples and he just got inWould I put him Jim the Hall? Yeah, I would.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Mike, shout out to Two Gloves for his win yesterday. love to see a guy thats has his own swing...a non-traditional swing...win on the PGA tour. do you see two-gloves as an aberration or will we see more of this style in the future?

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Fowler, Bubba, Gainey just to name three this year all won with homemade swings, I do think there's a trend back towards "can you repeat it? Then it ain't broke." And I think that's a good thing.

Chris (Chicago)

How many events in a year do you attend and cover - just the majors/Ryder Cup? Do you choose or does ESPN choose?

Bob (Syracuse)

DL-III.. have another win in him in the big leagues ?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Nope. I love him to death but he's done winning on the PGA Tour. Champions Tour he's gonna kill it for a few years!

Nick (Washington DC)

Freddy was dominant for two years (91-92). Was world number one. Back injury ruined his career and I feel like people took that into account. #whatcouldhavebeen

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

So we should put guys in the HOF because of what they could've been/done?I do see what you're saying but...

Ankeet (Detroit)

Apart from Tiger, Rory and Phil, who else would you consider elite?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Jason Dufner... now you do three more

Chris (Chicago)

Met Jeff Sluman the other day in my office, really nice guy - are pro golfers a lot smaller than TV makes them look?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

Most yes, Vijay and Ernie are the exceptions, they're bigger in person

Andrew (WI)

Curious, MC, you in favor or not of some kind of a world tour - 20 to 25 events, maybe 10 of them in the US, that all the top players in the game are a member of. It just seems like this tour hopping back and forth between US and Euro is getting a bit too complicated

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

I said in my video blog that guys should have to pick a tour. I hate the fact that guys can double dip, and the PGA Tour says, "We're a world tour." No you're not and you're scared to say no so you do a bunch of back door deals with guys to get them to play events... don't even get me started!!

Matt (Chicago)

How does Sea Island compare to Kiawah Island? Sea Island looks pretty nice - seems like it's worth the trip.

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

I'd go to Sea Island (St. Simons Island) first, the Kiawah would be my second choice

Bob (Syracuse)

Veej will win a couple dozen champions tour events.

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Yeah he will, even if he waits til he's 60 to start playing out there!

Mike (Detroit)

What are your thoughts on Rory's potential switch from Titleist to Nike?

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

The ball is gonna be the toughest adjustment, if he can do a deal and keep playing the Titleist ball it'd be a smart move.

Andrew (WI)

The problem with the "dominance" angle for the HoF would be how to deal with that with a guy like David Duval.

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

EXACTLY!

steven in orlando [via mobile]

mike, now if rory and tiger capture the master and us open that makes the open championship simply HUGE!!!!!!! I wonder if the tiger vs. rory storyline will light a fire under phil who has pretty much played the role of #2......????

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

I doubt those two going toe to toe will motivate Phil anymore than anything else

Bob (Syracuse)

Head to head... 11 matches ... who wins.. Tiger or Rory ?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Rory

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

The question is when will he go? He may wait til he's 60 to start playing out there!

Ed (Long Island)

Do the top players purposely not play the fall season to give the people fighting for the Top 125 money list more opportunities?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

No, guys don't play because the money and OWGR points aren't worth as much so they can knock out all their corporate "obligations" to all the logos they have on their clothes.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

mike, i have to disagree with you on lee westwood being elite. guy doesnt show up in majors and doesnt win on the tour as mush as even the likes of stricker. Hes good but not great...

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

that's not what the guys that play against him say, and as much as I like you, their opinions carry more weight than yours.

Stees (DC)

Look for Tiger to win at least 2 majors in 2013. Many positives in 2012 and with a full offseason of work, he will return to dominance. Do you agree?

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

I don't, he wins one major next year. But I can see him winning 4 tournaments overall again.

Ed (Long Island)

I think BVP and Dufner hit the silly season perfect, come first and second in Australia, then I assume some nice vacation time. Perfect!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

no vacation, they're both playing this week too and I got Dufner winning this week.

Nick (Washington DC)

Do you think finchem is combating the increased global competetion well? I worry events that we love will die out in a few years because of the increased incentives in money by the Euro tour. I feel like finchem is getting his clocked cleaned!

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

I don't think he's fighting it, I think he's trying to embrace it, but I think in doing so he's making the tour financially stable for a few years but competitively weaker which will be a problem in the future

Keith H (Seattle)

Have you found anyone to caddie for during Q-School yet?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

yep, if he makes it thru 2nd stage. then I'm gonna caddie finals again.

Bob (Syracuse)

Fowler... follow up his win this year with another next ?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

Yes, and I think he wins twice in 2013

Drew (Dallas)

Why would Tiger consider joining the European Tour?...PGA Tour appears to be the place to play.

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Appearance fees and more opportunities for sponsorships.

Dee (Lancaster)

Michael,As golf is a sport that celebs enjoy using to "relax" and some play quite a bit. Is there a celeb that you think might have potential on the tour?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

None. Even the guys that can play scratch at their home course will play in a pro am and say, "There's no way I could do this professionally."

Bob (Syracuse)

He'll play(Veej) .. even though he can compete on the "regular" tour, he knows he can win on the Sr. Citizen tour.. .and ALOT

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

I think he plays the majors out there but stays mostly on the regular tour for at least two years

Bob (Seattle)

With the ban on anchoring coming soon, how long until we see the first permanent side saddle putter on the PGA tour? I'm excluding K.J. Choi's brief dalliance.

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

I can't see the side saddle as the new "thing" in putting when the anchor gets nixed. I think there will be a new type of putter that makes it's way on tour.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

On the subject of Elite's, i think that with today's PGA tour you have so many more really good golfers but far less ELITE golfers. i dont know that outside of Tiger, rory, phil and maybe Luke we have true "elites" on the tour...

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

maybe there's more guys at an elite level and we're just spoiled by such good golf. That's what I think.

Bryan (Springdale, AR)

Forgive me for not knowing all the golfing vocabulary, but why are some guys allowed to use those long putters that are steadied by their torso? This seems like cheating to me and that these guys get to ruin the credibility of the game. The problem fans have with athletes is that if they can get around the rules, they will. I respect the golfers who chose not to use the cheating device!

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

It's called anchoring, and it's probably getting outlawed this fall. Two types of putters, belly and long. But there are "gray" area putters too with shafts that run up the forearm.

STEES (stees)

MC, Look for Rory to fade into oblivion next year. Don't think he has the consistency or drive to be truly great. His talent will continue to get him a win here or there, but that's about it.

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

Are you thinking with your head or your heart as a confessed Tiger lover?

J5 (IN)

Moore is another winner this year with an unconventional/homegrown swing.

Keith H (Seattle)

I thought the USGA did away with sidesaddle re: Sam Snead many years ago.

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Snead did a between the legs one too that was deemed illegal, that man tried more putters than Vijay!!

Scott (Wisconsin)

How did you get into being a caddy?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Robert Gamez asked me to caddy for him one week when I wasn't doing stand up comedy. Took off from there.

Andrew (WI)

Not to get all up in your vocabularity, MC, but I always think of "elite" as a comparative description, not something to describe raw talent. Which is why I think Westy isn't considered elite by fans; his results don't match the results of the Tiger's and Rory's.

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

That's what this is for. I love it!I think you're definition of an "elite" golfer is too narrow, are only Tiger and Rory are elite. How many elite players are there?

steven in orlando [via mobile]

well...then what is an Elite golfer? I think Lee's a really good golfer...top 5 over the past 5 years but i dont think that makes him an elite golfer. Just a poor mans opinion...but i respect your opinion.

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

He was world number 1... you think that was by accident? And thanks, I respect yours too.

Shoshana (Boston)

5 guys born in the 1940's won more than 20 pga tour events, since then there have been 3 - total. It's just harder to win in the modern era (1980's 0n).

Ed (Long Island)

If Rory is really switching to Nike, isn't the track record of guys switching equipment the next year not so great. See Furyk...

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

and Camillo

Sis (Mees)

MC - When does Tiger get back to world #1? I'd say April of next year.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

IF he wins the Masters, that's when it'd be

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

SEE!!! I told ya it goes too fast! Thanks again for a quick hour.ESPNCaddie@gmail.com@ESPNCaddie on TwitterLet's do it again soon!MC
