What's Shakin? Let's get this rolling along
Do you see the Broncos' defense improving as the year goes along, or is what we see now, what we get?
Tough call. I would say what we see is what we are getting for the most part. But I will say, DEN's schedule is WAY easier going forward than it was up until now...so the D might show better
Is RG3 an MVP candidate? Or is it impossible for a rookie to get that award.
Not impossible, but I don't see WASH winning enough games to warrent it. ROY will do just fine though!
Did you like Claiborne or Peterson more coming out of college?
Peterson-and I still do, although Peterson has had one extra NFL year under his belt. Just not another CB in the NFL with his gifts-and he is starting to play up to his abilities. Amazing
Bigger loss Sean Lee to the Cowboys or Prop Joe to the Co-op?
Prop Joe...oh Prop Joe. That one stings bad. Lee is a huge hit of course. I just started working on my Top 50 Players list that comes out midseason. Lee will be on it for sure. Every down guy. Extreme playmaker. Of course there is no replacing Lee (or Joe), but Connor/Carter isn't the absolute worst ILB combo I have seen. Example: Dallas was better prepared to lose Lee than Houston was to lose Cushing
Do you see the saints turning things around?
I see shootouts galore for the Saints. How many of those games can they win going forward? I don't know their schedule off hand, but I would say they are above .500 the rest of the way. So many points scored!
Terrell Suggs - freak of nature? Fastest recovery ever?
Both? Amazing debut for sure. Curious to see how he is doing after playing a game now. Has to be super sore.
A Tribe Called Quest: Check the Rhime...new genre for me, but great stuff
Sherman is the best CB in the league now Revis is out. Fact or fiction
Top 5 no doubt. I think I prefer Haden and Joseph (when healthy)
M-Dub, any chance for the Eagles to get a W this week? As a fan, I'm thinking this is make or break.
I am picking Philly. They are historically amazing after a bye. I do think a new DC will make that D amongst the best. ATL is due for a L
Hey Matt! Your thoughts on the Fins, new coaching staff and QB moving forward. Have the Fins finally found a solid replacement for Jay Fiedler, let alone Dan Marino?
They have found their QB...which in itself is just huge obviously. I thought MIA would win two or three games this year, but they are a very solid middle of the road team-and they have some extra draft picks in this next draft and don't have NEARLY as many needs as I expected. Very exciting. This offseason, I bet they target a big time free agent WR like Bowe, Jennings or Wallace and add a little secondary draft and maybe a pass rusher on D. Sprinkle in a little OL and a TE perhaps.
Mike Smith teams are undefeated after a bye too!
Huh...I guess that is noteworthy!
If the season ended today, how high of a need would you put RB for the Packers?
In that system (with Rodgers) they don't need a GREAT RB to have a very effective running game...but still, imagine if they had just an average starting RB talent? It needs addressed for sure and I would make it a high priority.
Analyze that Lions offense please..Staff's mechanics looked terrible, and throw it HIGHER to your 6'5" WR with the 40 in vertical at the GL...and like Titus or Broyles better?
Very excited about Broyles. And you are right on Stafford's mechanics-all over the place. We need to remember that he is still VERY young and has only started like 35 games in his career-he will be fine long term-but this is disturbing for sure. Teams are doing everything to take away/limit Calvin J and no one else is stepping up. Maybe Broyles will. And maybe the running game can actually do something. Big picture: This O should be fine. But right now? It is a mess, starting at QB
RGIII has proved to bw worth the draft picks but will the lack of those picks keep the Redskins from putting enough talent on the roster to be a true SB contender?
Well, we know that organization isn't afraid to spend in free agency, which will have to be the route they go for the most part. Of course it was a great trade though and RG3 will be the type of QB that makes needs lesser than they really are.
Did you think that Urlacher looked a step faster on Monday night? He had his best game thus far.
I think I mentioned that on the Cover it Live chat that Urlacher has been the weakest spot of CHI's awesome D, but did look to be getting closer to being himself. Agreed
Who is Prop Joe and what is the Co-op in the NFL? Can't we just do away with all this silly lingo?
No. We can't. It is from The Wire. Start with episode 1 of season 1...and thank me later
What did you make of Sanchez's performance against the Pats? Is he improving now that Keller is back or is the Pats' secondary just that bad?
Both. Everyone knows that I am not a Sanchez fan-never have been. But he played well-no doubt. Encouraging. And yes, the Pats' Pass D is junk.
Von Millers first step is the best thing in football. That's not a question, more of a statement....I love Von Miller
I a smitten with Von Miller
Is Cromartie also among your top 5 CBs this year?
I would take five CBs over Cro for sure, but I will concede that he is playing as well as just about anyone since Revis went down. Fantastic talent and I actually think he is better suited to be a true #1 type that battles the opponent's best WR every week-keeps his head in the game.
Sure was nice to see the most complete TE in the league (Heath Miller) get some props on Sunday night.
I hear ya...great player...but that honor still belongs to Gronk
Might want to inform CC from Atlanta that in 2008, Mike Smith's first year as head coach of the Falcons, they lost after the bye to none other than the Philadelphia Eagles. Now that, is noteworthy.
Indeed...was a while ago though
What did you think of Cortland Finnegan's contention that he's not a dirty player?
Finnegan is one of the best CBs in the league too btw...anyways, "Dirty"? More like "Plays with an edge"...a very sharp edge
Melton for the Bears....one of the most under rated players in the league?
Most Def...lines up all over the place. Extremely talented. Still learning his craft. He is the perfect example of a draft day "Project" that works out
Do you see Carolina moving DeAngelo Williams and if so who do you see as a good tradeing partner?
How about Cincy, Zona or GBay? But the problem is that Williams makes a ton of money. CAR really screwed that up spending so much on RBs.
Where would you place Geno Atkins if you're ranking DTs? I think he's every bit as disruptive as N-Stomp-akung, just without the "edge" and the hype...
He's better than Suh. Atkins will be in my Top 50-Suh will not be. I prefer a healthy Ngata over Atkins and prob Wilfork as well...but those two are much different types than Atkins.
Hi MattAre the Vikings contenders or pretenders?
Neither. An above average improving team.
Best signing in NFC east so far Bennett - Giants Carr - Dallas Ryan - Eagles?
They traded for D Ryan, but he is playing very well. But-for the buck-I love the addition of Bennett.
Has the Santonio Holmes injury actually benefited Mark Sanchez?
Hard to say that. Over the past few years there just have been SO many instances of Holmes getting away from coverage, the ball not being delivered on time or accurately, incompletion and Holmes puts his hands in the air disgruntled. But Holmes also has to be a major distraction/annoyance as well.
Hey Matt, given Alex Green's performance (or lack-thereof) against StL, how do you see the GB backfield shaking out?
I would think he is still the lead guy, but they should be scanning trade options and the waiver wire
If Bruce Arians leads the Colts to 7 wins or more would he be a candidate fo HC job somewhere next year?
Seems logical to me. QB Gurus are always in high demand too.
M-Dub, lots of chatter for RG3 right now...seems the same was said about Newton last year, and teams figured him out. Let some teams get some video on him, and I think he'll be in some trouble too...just contain him! Your thoughts???
Funny you should ask...It is an INSIDER article, but go find my Scouts Buzz from Sunday Night-addresses that exactly!
Do you think Michael Turner is still a top RB in the league? How steep do you see him declining this season and the next?
Not close to a top RB. He has declined already, but I will admit that he still looks a little better than I anticipated. I am curious how he holds up for the playoffs though. RB is an offseason need for ATL
Best rest of the year - Hakeem Nicks, torrey Smith or Kenny Britt?
Nicks hasn't been 100% obviously, well neither has Britt. But when they are all right, I go: 1 Nicks by a large margin 2 Britt 3 Smith
Ignoring health concerns, how would you rank these guys for the next 5 years: Lamarr Houston, Carlos Dunlap, Jabaal Sheard or Adrian Clayborn?
Wow, that one is VERY tough. Would honestly give them all similar grades and I like each of those guys.
Why are people saying the Lions lost instead of the Bears winning the game? The game and injury to Cutler dictated their play calling.
I didn't see it like DET lost the game. Felt like CHI dominated from the start and the score/box score doesn't do that win justice at all.
What do you think of Will Beatty?
Good enough and clearly an upgrade at LT over Diehl. Pure LT type skillset-not super powerful or nasty, but athletic with good feet.
Offensive and Defensive ROY?
RG3 and Chandler Jones, although it usually goes to a LB
How do you explain Pitt Def ranking #2? When I watch them they do not look that impressive.
Is that really true? The Steelers DO NOT have the 2nd best D in the NFL this year. Not even close, although they came around strong vs. Cincy last week in the 2nd half.
Who do you think is more suited for starting QB? Jake Locker, or Matt Hasselbeck?
Locker. Hass is who he is, which is fine. But the Titans are not winning the Super Bowl this year-or with Hass as their QB. Locker can potentially be great...need to cultivate that ASAP
How high would you rank Trent Williams as a LT? Is he finally playing at a pro bowl level?
Agreed. Has really come into his own. Gets better all the time and has rediculous tools.
Did Emery miss his first, 1st round pick by taking McClellin over Chandler Jones?
McC isn't a bad player, but Jones is the best and most promising D Rook in this class. Stud.
Pittsburgh or Baltimore in the AFCN ? Both have some serious issues right now?
The Ravens actually have more serious issues right now, but they also have an ample lead in that division. If PGH is to pull it off, they will most likely have to beat BALT twice. But...they lost to the Titans and Raiders!
Has the Chiefs changed from Pats to the Browns with the announcement of Quinn as the starter? I mean, Crennel, Daboll, Quinn, Hillis...... What is wrong with my Chiefs??? I don't get it, they have as much talent to hang with most teams on paper. It can't all be on Cassel, can it? I mean, they still have fumble/int problems with Quinn in.....
That QB decision is bonkers to me
The one time AFC "Elite" D's (Pittsburgh, Baltimore, NY) all are struggling this year - has age cauight up with all 3?
Age/Injuries...Just think of some of the studs on these three Ds that have barely played this year
NE Balt Hou Den win divisions and WC goes to SD and Jets(gasp the schedule the rest of the way is pretty cake)?
That doesn't sound unrealistic at all...esp with the divisional winners. Still think PGH has something to say about that though.
Is Moore the best WR in the AFC west, Kid has ton of talent. Bowe, Floyd, Thomas, Decker.
Huge Moore fan here, but I don't think you can make that statement based on his minimal body of work and injuries. I would go with Dem Thomas, Bowe then Moore then Decker
Has Lovie and the Bears finally have stability at both safety spots with Wright and Conte? Studs in the making.
"Studs" is too strong for me-and they sure benefit from those around them and the system-but two very solid NFL starters...which like you alluded to, hasn't been the case at that position for CHI of late.
Best D so far this year: San Fran, Houston, Seattle, or Chicago?
Those are clearly the top four and I would go: CHI, SEA, SF then HOUS...but that is splitting hairs.
Is Manning again the best QB in the NFL?
Which Manning? And the answer is No. Rodgers is the best football player in the world.
Is Schwartz on the hot seat in Detroit yet?
He shouldn't be, but I can't say I know if he is or not. He took over an 0-16 team! That wasn't that long ago. And...DET didn't get better ANYwhere over this offseason.
How much of Tannehill's success is based on his maturity and abilities versus Coach Philbin creating a positive team culture for him?
I would say both, but it is tough for me to judge things like positive team cultures. I know that when you watch him on film that he has great ability, but also is tough and has a tremendous feel for the position and playing in the pocket. And just think, he didn't even play the position that much at A&M...maybe some of that time at WR gave him a unique perspective on playing QB
Peyton sorry I am still overwhelmed with one being on our team!
I bet you are! Peyton still isn't all the way to me, but obviously still a tremendous QB...but not #1.
Can Antonio Cromartie get some love... I mean I dunno whats gotten into him he is the best CB in the league!
Scroll back a bit...gave him some love
If you were Oakland, would you sit McClain for Burris? Burris seems to have more energy and just a better player than McClain. Too early to call McClain a bust?
Not sure that it is too early to call McClain a bust because he really doesn't cover enough ground in coverage and just isn't effective in that critical area of LB
Can GBay overcome the Woodson injury? You see them making a run here?
With Rodgers playing like he is now, they are extremely tough to beat no matter what. Amazing. And I like the two rookies: Hayward and McMillon...BTW, my Rookie Report should be posted by now and I profile Hayward in this week's.
Is Jason Garrett toast in Dallas if they don't make it to the playoffs?
I would say Yes...that is my hunch
How many years should it take until the Colts are a playoff team again?
They have to rebuild that D...ask me again in a year
Can Stewart be an effective bellcow for the Panthers? Should he be?
Yes and Yes. That isn't a knock on DeAngelo, but Stewart can be a Top 5 RB
still taking Cutler over Schaub? if so... dumb
Def taking Cutler over Schaub...easily
Who would you take - Julio or AJ?
AJ...AJ over everyone except probably Calvin
Best pass rush duo in the league: Von Miller Elvis Dumervil?
No one else is coming to mind. Cole and Babin should be right there, but haven't been this year. Giants have a slew of guys, as do Chicago
How scary good is the packers offense going to be when Greg Jennings gets healthy?
Good point. I doubt Cobb's role changes, but J Jones will have to take a backseat.
Clay Mathews or JJ Watt for Defensive Player of Year so far?
Watt is far and away the guy, but I would put Miller 2nd and Clay 3rd
At the beginning of this year my superbowl picks were ravens 9ers is that still a probability?
Wow, I don't feel strong about BALT right now. I doubt they are truly as bad as they showed this past week-and they will end up in the playoffs. And yes, the AFC is junk, but I like Houston and New England's chances better than Baltimore's.
Speaking of hot seats - Chan Gailey/Dave Wannstedt?
Maybe Wanny, but not Gailey
AJ over everybody but maybe Calvin? are you kidding.....
What is funny about that? You question AJ Green's greatness? Not saying he is a better WR than Fitzgerald, but I take Green over everyone if I get to pick going forward-except Calvin J
hey, my pre-season Super Bowl picks were Ravens/9ers, too!
Do you think GBay keeps Jennings? Contract year, injury prone lately, they have younger depth on the roster. Could see Thompson cutting ties. I would hate it, but could see it...
I would expect it
I have read a few opinions regarding Denver as a team to watch as the season progresses. Is there a similar NFC team to keep an eye on?
I agree on Denver and maybe Pittsburgh, but in the NFC? Hmmm...GBay count? Maybe the Eagles
I just wanted to let you know that I flipped Jennings for Nelson from my best friend. How bad did I rip him off? FYI- The trade was three weeks ago...
If it was three week ago, then yes for sure. No way to treat your best friend.
Sorry, AJ only real target at CIN and he's had great first half seasonbut he don't come close to many VETS in NFL, Welker, A. Johnson,R. White, etc. etc.
Totally disagree. Green is a very special player.
More likely - Manning Bowl or Harbaugh Bowl?
Vikings still have GB twice, Chicago twice, Seattle, Houston, Detroit and St Louis on their schedule. Does their collapse begin after this week, or can they stay in the wild card race?
Wow, that is rough. I think they win Thurs, but 8-8 seems about right to me...which would be a wildly succesful season
Alright everyone...I am out!
