Hello, everybody. It's been a busy last few hours here, huh? On to the Giants. What do you want to know?
Do you think that the 2012 Dallas Cowboys will make the Playoffs?
Chris always comes right to the point. I had them in the playoffs at the beginning of the season but I'm going to change my mind with this injury. I know they can overcome losing Sean Lee. I just don't think they will.
When is the earliest possible return for Sean Lee?
Next year. They put him on injured reserve today. He'll have surgery next week.
I love Sean Lee, but if you look at his frame and the way he plays he will always have some significant injury. Do you think the team agrees and that is why Jerry said they would have taken Bobby Wagner in the second round had they not traded the pick?
I can't really talk about the first part because I'm not a medical expert. I'll take on the second part. I think the interest in Wagner was about Bruce Carter more than Sean Lee. They didn't know about Carter after the knee injury he suffered at North Carolina. He's been fine this season and has the makings of a player. So does Wagner from the looks of it up in Seattle. However, if they drafted an inside linebacker again in the second round, I don't think that would've been smart.
How do the Cowboys go about replacing Sean Lee with the guys they already have?
Dan Connor will get the first crack at it. He'll play in the base defense and I think they will have to adjust their sub packages and make sure they go with more safeties or corners as safeties because Connor is not that good in coverage. One thing to keep an eye on with Connor: he suffered a slight stinger vs. Carolina and didn't look comfortable at practice today.
How much of a low-blow is the loss of Sean Lee?
To me it's the equivalent of losing Romo on offense. Lee does everything well and does everything on that defense. Can they overcome it? Sure. But like I said earlier, I just don't see it happening.
With Coach G on the bubble, what other ex-head coaches will be a fit for the job if they are willing to take the position?
Who says he's on the bubble? I don't see that, hear that or feel that from folks at Valley Ranch.
With Costa's injury, will we see Kevin Kowalski added to the 53 man roster? He played pretty well in his limited time last season so he may help the o-line depth. What does the team think about KK and his long-term future with the team?
He's on PUP and he's just not ready yet to practice. They have another week or so to activate him of PUP and then start a three-week window for him to be able to practice. The team likes him a lot but they can't rush him back just yet.
Todd - the Giants are 3- in JerryWorld largely because of Eli Manning. Can the Cowboys defensive front put enough pressure on him Sunday to change that?
They better get after Manning. He will pick them apart and has picked them apart. They sacked him three times in the opener. They'll need to get him more this week.
Orei lemon knows the defense better than ernie sims, so why not let him be the 3rd linebacker?
Sims isn't coming in to be the third down linebacker. He's just an experienced guy. Lemon doesn't have experience. The Cowboys just want to cover themselves a little bit here.
With the latest on Murray, who gets the carries this week vs. NY?\
It doesn't look like he will be back this week. He's still in crutches. He has a serious injury that really requires time. How much? I don't know but I wouldn't look for him this week.
when will we see coale beasly? surely he is better than kevin olg
I'm going to dig on that a little bit more today. I think Beasley should get a look and keep Austin out of the slot.
Will Charlie Peprah signing put a end to matt johnson season?
Not necessarily but it's looking like Johnson will go on IR if the team needs a roster spot. It's a shame too. He's a good kid. He's tried to do all of the right things. He's just got a case of bad luck. I don't agree with folks calling him a bust and should be cut. That's just foolish.
Outside of Danny McCray, has anyone really stepped up and stood out on special teams this year?
I assume you mean the coverage and return teams because Dan Bailey and both punters have been good. I've liked what Eric Frampton has done. James Hanna has been pretty good. It's a unit that's always in flux and they have given up too many plays, no doubt.
I know peprah caught 5 picks last year for the packers so he has pretty good ball skills, why would the packers cut him if he was productive?
He had a knee injury and they went with younger guys. The Cowboys believe he's healthier now and can help. We'll see.
Do you see Miles Austin being a huge part of the game plan this week? Seems like he'd have a lot of advantages, particularly in the slot.
He does, especially against the Giants. He's had some big games against New York. They desperately need a big game this week, too. I don't see them winning a defensive showdown without Lee. The offense has to put some big plays together.
The Cowboys o-line seems to have improved a lot from where they were 3 weeks ago. How much of that has been because of Tyron Smith getting used to the left side and how would you rate his season so far?
The line has been better here the last couple of games. More continuity helps. Small changes in running plays (more downhill) has helped too. The protection has been OK but remember Romo is getting rid of the ball quick. Smith has improved as he has gone along but has some hiccups. I think we all expected near perfection, which was probably not fair. He's been good but can be better.
Hi Im a life long Cowboys fan 46 years and going.... and i have a very unsettling feeling in my stomach about Sundays game... Just feel the Stage is set for the Giants to come in Punch us in the month... here are my reasons why and maybe you can tell me if im justifield in my thoughts1: the run game, our's is questionable and theirs is starting to click with brown and bradshaw not to mention i feel that wilson is due to have a huge a kick off/punt return....2: our defense is riddled with the injury bug and the giants are getting healthier week by week ... i dont expect them to play 4th stringers in the secondary against us this time around.. not to forget their pass rush attack seems to be playing at best in the leauge level3:Eli and his stable of targets ... Giants are real deep with players that can catch the ball..... and i dont except Cruz to be dropping balls like he did week one and Bennett is someone that is gonna have a chip on his shoulder for running him out of town... and the way he has been playing makes me wonder why we did4: why are we favored? Don't get me wrong i love to hear when my boys are favored makes me feel good and all , but looking at the 2 teams both health wise and record wise Giants are simply the better team... and this plays into the whole nobody respects us card they like to play... im no fool and i have no hate for the Giants like most boys fan do im a fan of the game and i call it as i see it and i just have a bad feeling about sundaythanks
No comments here. Just giving PROTECTtheSTAR some room to vent.
How do you think the CBs will line up this week? Is Carr going to be on Nicks or Cruz?
They had Carr on Cruz in the opener. He did a good job on him and Cruz helped with some drops. I'd think they would go the same route. Claiborne has to be ready for a better Nicks this week, too, than he saw in the opener.
Heard from some Giants fans that the Cowboys talk too much, particularly when it comes to the Giants (this conversation was brought up due to Jerry's preseason comment about this game). Is it me or do the Giants seem to talk more than just about any team? Brandon Jacobs, Justin Tuck, Bradshaw, Osi, etc. Other than Jerry, I can't remember any recent Cowboys running their mouths.
Yeah, it's a myth, especially since Crayton left town.
Who will make the calls now that lee is out? ware? carter? sensabaugh?
Bruce Carter. He did it after Lee got hurt. He'll do it again.
Ogletree has had some big drops in the last three weeks. I thin Dallas should go ahead and cut him, he's not proven anything in his three plus years, and give the younger guys chances. What say you?
I wouldn't cut him. Cutting a guy for the sake of cutting a guy isn't smart. He has some ability. I do think you need to pull him when he makes mistakes. I said it earlier, I'd like to see Beasley get some work.
How is Dez's groin?
He was out to practice today and returning punts. He appears to be OK. And another asked about the concussion stuff, so I'll take that here: I think he's good there too if he's on the field practicing.
What's been the key to the improvement in the run game over the past couple of weeks? Has Vickers really stepped up or are they getting better blocks from the line?
Well, they got 85 yards on 31 carries last week. I wouldn't say that's good or improved. They just ran it more. Vickers was pretty good vs. Baltimore but honestly the Cowboys have been better in two-tight end sets the last couple of games.
Is the reduction in playing time a signal that Jenkins' career in Dallas is pretty much done?
I don't think anybody assumed he would be back next year with the Cowboys. The one snap the other day surprised me. He's healthy. He should play more. He'll get more work this week against a passing team like the Giants.
why don't we see Hanna on passing play? to me it seems like he has good hands and we could use him in the passing game. thought?
They've used more three-tight end sets the last two games. Again, he's a rookie and has to learn a lot. He's progressing but I don't know you design plays for him.
We all know it will never happen, BUT since Jerry took over personnel the Cowboys have been mediocre. It could be said that Jimmy was the brains of that operation. Will Jerry ever quit micromanaging and hire a GM with teeth?
The weekly Jerry the GM question has come in. You know the answer to this. And I understand Jimmy was great here. How did he do in Miami? He wasn't exactly a guru there. Maybe Jimmy missed Jerry. Who knows?
Shot in the dark here. Mike Holmgren to coach the 'boys next year. Any possibility?
I would've liked this a few years ago perhaps but not now. Jerry has constantly used this stat: no coach who has won a Super Bowl with one team has won a Super Bowl with the second team. Parcells got there. Holmgren got there. They both lost. I don't think they go that route. And I don't think Garrett is on the hot seat.
Who will get more carries this week, Felix or Tanner?
Oh, I would go with Felix but he was not practicing during the portion of session that was open to the media. He has a bruised knee. I still think Felix gets more but maybe not a ton more. How about a 60-40 split?
There's really no escaping the fact that if the Cowboys don't play really well over the next 3 weeks that they will be 3-6. I know everyone thinks Garrett is safe, but what Jerry's reaction be if the team finishes 5-11, especially if the offense continues to be subpar?
I think he's safe so 5-11 gets him back but 2013 becomes make or break for him. How he is attempting to put this together is the right way. It takes time and patience, two things fans don't have and perhaps Jones too. He needs to manage games better, especially late. But I think Garrett knows how a team is supposed to be built.
How would you grade Livings' and Bernadeau's performances up to this point?
Livings has been pretty good, IMO. He's been what they expected. Bernadeau started slowly but I think he's done better the last two weeks.
do you think it was a mistake for us to get rid of bennett? cause he looks pretty impressive on the giants
First, they didn't get rid of Bennett. He was a free agent and chose to sign with the Giants. Second, they made the right call in not trying to re-sign him. He was not going to do here what he is doing there. He was a failure here in part because of his mistakes and the team's mistakes. It wouldn't have worked.
Why do so many Cowboys fans want to just cut or fire everyone? Romo, Olgetree, Matt Johnson, Dez, Scandrick, Sensabaugh, Free, Garrett, etc. How does cutting all these help build the team for the future? The Cowboys don't have 20 draft picks each year and unlimited cap space. And firing a coach every 2 years is no way to build a perennial winner. Am I right here?
hey todd that is not a question by protecthestar that is an essay
How dare you be level-headed? Don't you know you just cut everybody every week when they lose and sign them to extensions if they win? No, you're right.
Oops. on that. Raul - you're right. Manifesto. That's why I just let it go.
How are the 'Boys going to handle JPP this week? Does Witten stay in more on protection to provide some help against the pass rush?
I think he stays in some but he's your most consistent pass catcher. I think you'll see them use John Phillips and two tight ends a lot. Probably send a back over there, too. At times it'll be one on one and the tackles better hold up.
Any chance Dunbar gets a little action this week since Felix is a little banged up and Tanner is more of a big, bruising back?
Maybe. But Garrett said Dunbar will be more of a pinch hitter than anything else. I wouldn't add him to your fantasy team or anything like that.
so what ur saying is benett is a good player but in the wrong system
He's an OK player and was with the wrong team.
Is Jerry Jones giving up hope on Romo?
Not sure how you even think that is the case. Jerry has never expressed anything but love for Romo. He wants to sign him to an extension.
What the recovery time table for sean lee and could he not make it back if the team makes the playoffs?
No, he couldn't. It's a major surgery here. He's going to need a lot of rehab time.
Hey Todd,Wow what a huge hole to fill regarding LEES departure of 2012 SEASON with that being said who will be that next guy? Also is this PEPRAH guy any good?
Peprah has some ability. Now he's on the street for a reason, but he's played well, has experience. Will he make the Cowboys think they have the next Darren Woodson? No, but he can contribute.
Does jason not trust tony in your opinion? Especially in tight games down the stretch?
I think he trusts him to a degree. I think it's more an offense-as-a-whole thing because he's seen so many penalties, mistakes, etc. But I think he trusts Romo. He has to trust him a lot this week.
So do you think Doug Free is with the team next season?
Hmm, tough call, but I'll go with yes for now. He played a good game vs. Carolina, IMO. I think the false start penalty on him was bogus. Looked like a neutral zone infraction to me. He played with more strength vs. the Panthers than he has in other games.
Do I have to be Adam from Albuquerque to get a question answered? Little help on Romo... what will it take to get him going again and playing like an elite QB?
Honestly, I don't look at the names that much. But hre you go TK: He needs to make plays down the field. When they're at their best, that's what they do, especially to Austin. Now it takes the line to hold up long enough to make those throws. He hasn't had much time.
Sorry I have to cut this short. Tom Coughlin is set to call in to us here. Thanks for the questions. Remember to check out the blog for updates. You can follow me on Twitter (@toddarcher) and send me an e-mail if you have questions. See you next week. Courage.
