Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:00 PM)

And hello everyone. Thank you for joining in. It's always an eventful hour.

dan (memphis)

6 of Hasselbeck's 11 wins as Titan QB are off game-winning drives.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

I'll need to look into that!

jack (Pasadena,TX)

Do you think the Texans are kicking themselves for drafting Randy Bullock, instead of "Legatron" (Zuerlein)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:02 PM)

Graham has been just fine.

Tom (IL)

Looking at the remainder of the Colts schedule, I can see them possibly finishing 8-8 or 9-7. I know that there's no such thing as guaranteed wins in the NFL, especially with a team this young, but do you see this as being possible?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

Possible, sure. Probable? No.

Stefan (Indianapolis)

Josh Chapman started practicing this week. Any chance he sees the field this sunday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:03 PM)

No. Keep in mind he missed all of camp. He's got three weeks for them to look at him. Maybe on an accelerated schedule they'd activate him after two. After one isn't going to happen.

TxnFan (office)

Why is there so much talk or emphasis on trying to rank a QB on whether or not he is considered "elite" or "good" or "avg"? At the end of the day "elite" QB's miss the SB and i have no doubt that a NON "elite QB could take a team into the Playoffs and SB with the right pieces around him....ie Texans and previously Ravens.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

Because quarterbacks are a huge conversation topic and people love ranking and categorizing things.

Peter (Fredericton NB Canada)

Hi Paul,Do you see the Tenn/Indy game as a tight one or does Tenness win by a TD while riding the hot hand of Hasselback, CJ2K and the others?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

First off, I see someone winning by a TD as a tight game. A one-score game is a tight game.

Andrew Ablog (Columbus, OH)

The Titans' D has 9 sacks on the season. That puts them on pace for fewer than last year's embarrassing number. When is Jerry Gray going to start rushing more than the front 4? Some added pressure on the QB and run game could help this terrible defense.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

He's a DB who calls defenses from a DB perspective.

Travis (Nashville)

Has there been any updates on Jake Locker's MRI he had Monday. Or if he has been practicing this week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:05 PM)

Practicing on a limited basis this week.

Jake Locker (Tennessee)

Is coach just using my injury as an excuse not to play me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:05 PM)

No, you're hurt.

Danny (Indianapolis)

Is their any definant word if Robert Mathis is good to play or is he going to sit out one more? Also, i thought Vontae Davis played his best game of the year vs the Browns, what do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Davis and Zbikowski had their best games. Probably no definitive word on Mathis until Sunday morning.

John (Alabama)

Buying or Selling on CJ's resurgence and the Titans O-line getting it together? He is leading the league in rushing from week 4 on, but he got almost half his yards and all of his TD's against the leagues worst rushing defense.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Not buying. Need to see it against a quality team. Bills' run defense is a joke.

Craig W. (Crosby, Texas)

Your blog is tops in the NFL. With a win over the Titans, do the Colts have a legit wildcard shot in a weak AFC especially when they may catch the superior Texans resting players in Week 18?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

The Texans won't be resting people if they can be caught. Winner of Sunday's Colts-Texans game is certainly in the mix. Big surprise to me. But early still.

Zoltan (Budapest)

Will Dary Smith play this season? If not, what should the Jaguars do with him, since he is on contract year? Give him a 1 year deal?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

I think he plays at some point. Just my gut feel. Odds are he winds up with a one-year deal somewhere. Is it in Jacksonville? Depends on who's calling the shots.

Awayne (Indy)

Paul a job for stats & info team, when was the last time all 4 teams in the AFCS won in the same week? I know it didn't happen last year Colts only 2 wins were against division teams.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

Such things are not that rare. Honestly, I don't even think it's worth asking because it will have been pretty recently.

Miles Burman (Houston)

When will we see brandon harris and roc carmichael???

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

Why are you anxious to see them when the Texans are coming off a game where Joseph, Jackson and McCain all played well?

Zoltan (Budapest)

You still think Chad Henne is an upgrade over Luke McCown? He was terrible and was paid 6.75 million $ in the offseason. By the way he should've lost his Nr. 2 job in the preseason to Jordan Palmer based on how they played...

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

It's foolhardy to make a judgement like that based on preseason play, particularly since Henne went against better people than Palmer. Henne has a lot more skill than McCown.

Kubes (Houston, TX)

Do you still think Atlanta will come out on top over the Texans come January?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

I picked Atlanta over New England in the preseason, actually. Still like Atlanta, absolutely.

Young (Indy)

Continuity is a big part of an offensive line. With Joe Reitz finally healthy and the supposed starter at the beginning of the year, how long do you think he replaces Linkenbach at left gaurd considering Arians comments earlier in the week? Or at all? One decent game against the Browns does not make up for a plethora of terrible play by him.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:13 PM)

They had two games with the same line, and a good line performance against the Browns. So I am fine with Arians not changing things up right now. Will it change eventually? Maybe. It's not like Reitz is great, either.

Miles Burman (Houston)

Matt Schaub seemed to have his way with the Ravens last week. Do you think he can repeat this performance against another soild secondary such as the vikings or DA bears? I have qualms becuase of the receiving cores inconsistency.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Don't look at the Texans' receiving corps. Look at their pass-game targets -- which expands to include Daniels, Foster and Casey and turns it into a good group. Sure, Schaub can beat anyone.

Zoltan (Budapest)

I watched the Lions_Bears game and Justin Durant played well (again). Since Clint Session might not play again and most likely they need to address the position again did the Jaguars a huge mistake letting Durant go after '10?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

So they were supposed to anticipate that a guy they would sign who was an upgrade would have concussion issues?

Brandon (Houston, Tx)

JJ Watt is leading the league in sacks and TFL. He is tied for second for passes defensed. What type of numbers would he need in each category to be considered for or win the MVP?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

He'll be considered. And he will win defensive player of the year. But a lot of good QBs would have to tank for a non-QB to win MVP.

Jerry Gray (Nashville)

Should I be fired? I just don't seem to have the Defense playing as expected. I mean 30+ points in all games but one.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

What does firing you solve? Who's replacing you from the staff that will fare better with the same personnel? You've done poorly, but deserve a chance to try to dig out.

Blueman (Indy)

You mentioned Chapman returning soon will he be on the field more than 15-18 snaps a game even when he is fully healthy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

Depends on who else is healthy and playing, how he plays and how they play.

Owen Daniels (Houston, TX)

Why doesn't anybody talk about me as an elite TE?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

Because guys like Gronkowski and Graham are on a level well above you.

Brian (Cville, VA )

Cox, Monroe, Knighton, Smith, Mathis....all in contract years for the Jags. Do they keep all 5 and rank them in order of who gets the biggest money.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

I blow the team up. But I'd keep Monroe and Cox. Smith and Knighton if I could get them on short, cheap deals. But it depends on who is running things and what they want to do.

Brian (Washington, DC)

PK, do you see any correlation between CJ's lack of production and the Titans abandoning the power-run game, utilizing the fullback? Similar to Eddie George's dropoff when the Titans got rid of Lorenzo Neal? After CJ's 2,000 yard season (running behind lead-blocker Ahmard Hall), Hall was suspended the first 4 games of 2011 and the Titans got away from using the fullback. Seems like they've used Quin Johnson more in CJ's more successful games this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

I really don't. FB use by the Titans has long been overblown. I believe Heimerdinger actually thought CJ ran better without a FB.

Kubes (Houston, TX)

Ok, so do you still see the Pats making the Super Bowl over the Texans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Right now, I don't. But there are a lot of games to play. Texans could be peaking early. Pats could be lined up to peak late. It's not about who's best in October.

Brady (H-town)

Is it just me, or is Foster not as big as a receiver as he was last year? I know its somewhat irrelevant since other Texans receivers are getting open, but Fosters great in open space and the coaches seem to be more reluctant to set him up with screens than they were last year

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

I don't think they are at all reluctant, unless it's part of trying to limit his work. They can do all sorts of things in that offense. They'll use him with that as they feel they need to.

Chris Berman (Buffalo)

Why do I dislike the Texans and why do I not respect them enough to ever compliment them

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

Better question: Why in the world would a fan care if that's the case?

mark (minnesota)

Sounds like Packers will let greg jennings go at the end of the season. And given that Chris Johnson hasn't lived up to his contract. What are the chances the packers and titans would do a straight up trade for the two? sounds like a win-win for both teams.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

Why would the Titans trade for a guy with an expiring contract who's hurt and plays a position where they aren't looking for help?

Julian Stanford (Everbank)

Am I a legit starter in the league, or just the best or the rest?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

How about we watch you play and deice after instead of before? I think you are promising.

Not Shad Khan (Everbank Field)

Hi, I'm totally not Shad Khan. I'm also not considering a possible change of team management after this season. However, I'm curious as to who you would think of as the best person to come in and build a winner out of my - er - Shad's team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

I don't know. You need to find the next young, up-and-comer from the outside. And then let him piece the whole thing together.

Jon (Seattle)

How big of an impact does a missing Roos have this weekend? Can The rest of the Titans blockers contain Freeney and Mathis without him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

Well, if Otto is playing I'd expect Craig Stevens will be on the field a lot and right next to him. So that limits the Titans weaponry a bit. Freeney's got a bum ankle and Mathis could miss the game with a bad knee.

Miles Burman (Houston)

What do you think of Bryan Bramans development? He has had some relative success on special teams and combined with his size, speed, and strength, he has tremendous upside. Also, will he see any playing time on defense in a game if bradie james or tim jamison struggle?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

Great special teamer. He's an outside guy, not an inside guy. Which means he ranks fourth behind Barwin, Reed and Mercilus. He doesn't get time on defense unless their or injuries or until the games don't matter.

Zoltan (Budapest)

To clearfy Brian - Monroe is NOT on his contract year. His rookie contract expires after '13. However Jennings is in his contract year as well as Meester and Greg Jones. Who would you keep from the 3?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

Jennings if he's cheap.

Jalone (Brentwood)

Rank these Titans needs: Interior O-line, Safety, Cornerback, Defensive end

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

DE, S, OL, CB.

John (Nashville)

How are the D-linemen progressing this year? Martin has been making a few plays and Wimbley looks like a decent signing. Morgan and has been sticking his nose in there as well but I haven't heard a lot from Klug on down.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

Klug hasn't been on the field a lot, which means he's not earning snaps. Martin's been good. Casey's playing hurt. Wimbley's not been good enough. Morgan playing better, but still not producing sacks.

Brandon Marshall (no, the other one) (Jacksonville)

Do I even belong in the league? There are multiple UDFAs (from this year and last) getting PT in front of me.....clearly I'm not very good.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

Not everyone gets things at the same pace in their first year. He gets longer than this to be judged.

Jeremy (Indianapolis)

Everyone is comparing RGIII to Luck. Are you buying the RGIII hype over Luck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

Column up in about 15 minutes that will touch on this.

Danny (indianapolis)

Any idea why Gary Brackett hasnt found a team? Is he done?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

You think he's not done but the entire league has passed on him for seven weeks? Was very much made for the system Colts were running.

Jason (Nashville)

What do you attribute to the Titans running game looking better of late? Has the line been playing better or has CJ just figured it out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

Both. Also a run defense like Buffalo's can cure a lot.

Blueman (Indy)

Powers up and down play as a man corner more of him adjusting to playing man more frequently or the lack of pass rush because of injuries to Freeny and Mathis ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

Both for sure. He's a good player, I think.

Matthias (Indianapolis)

With the Mnning era over in Indy, how would you rate Luck's performance so far?.. on an A-F scale, I give him about a C+...Honestly,..there are games where he looks Brillant, (GB comeback), games where he looks like a game manager QB ( Browns), and games where he looks God awful ( Jets)..Will he ever get better and more consistent?..Your thoughts Paul?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

"Will he ever get better and more consistent?" Seriously? He's played SIX GAMES. He's been very good for a rookie quarterback on a bad team. I give him a B-plus, easily.

JayKay (H-Town)

Texans fans were not happy with Gumbledorf's commentary this weekend. Got me wondering: Not including your fellow employees at ESPN, who are your favorite commentators?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

It's not an area for me to critique, and, as I am always at a game, I don't hear a lot of commentators outside of Sunday and Monday nights.

Miles Burman (Houston)

Will Barrett Ruud play?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

I think he's insurance. Dobbins was pretty good against Baltimore.

Blueman (Indy)

Who is the one guy in the AFCS that at the start of the season you wondered why he had a starting job that has suprised you with solid play?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

I wouldn't say I wondered why Kareem Jackson had a starting job, but I did regard him as the weak link of the defense. He may still rank as such, but he's been far better than I expected.

Charlie Batch (Bloomington)

Are you sold on the Colts rookie TE's and WR's?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

I believe in time, probably three of four of them will be productive long-term players.

Mike (KY)

I'm tired of hearing this malarkey about Chris Johnson only crushing weak defenses. Ran well against the Texans and Steelers. You don't have to hate on CJ. You really don't have to.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

OK, so we credit him for Texans and Steelers. We discredit him for New England, San Diego, Detroit and Minnesota, no? Detroit is 16th against the run. Shouldn't Chris Johnson be able to run against a middle of the pack run defense? Are we supposed to just forget about the dud games? They don't go away when he has good games.

Arian Foster (Houston)

Namaste, Paul. Do you think it's a good idea for me to have 400+ carries come January? Or do my awesome chakra and vegan diet make make me immune to wearing down like other RBs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

Your pace will slow. Heck, you probably don't play in the last game, maybe the last two games. That will have a big impact on your carries. You'll be just fine.

Brian (Cville, VA )

Earlier in the year I asked which of the 4 AFC South QBs wouldn't start week 1 next year for their current team. You said all 4 would. About half way through the year, do you still feel the same way?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

I do. The only one in question is Gabbert. And even with a new regime, it'll probably be hard for them to quickly have a better alternative.

The Commish (NYC)

I'm thinking of switching Tampa Bay to the AFCS and Jacksonville to the NFCS to even out the divisions, and ultimately the conferences. One problem, no one will stop criticizing me about it.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

What exactly does evening out divisions and conferences mean? I don't see what's in need of evening out. And there is no move coming.

Brian (Cville, VA )

The Texans really are well-built if they can allow a former number 1 pick in his prime years walk away and seemingly get better on defense. JJ Watt is a monster. What are the odds Watt is viewed as the best defensive NFL player in the league in 2 years?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:45 PM)

He should be viewed as it now.

Brian (Washington, DC)

How would you rate Kendall Wright's developement this season? I realize that he hasn't blown anyone out of the water, and he's had a few tough drops. But otherwise, he's been a pretty reliable target, and seems to get open, especially on the shorter routes.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

I'd like to see him take a short pass, catch it, and run with it. He hasn't done that yet.

JayKay (H-Town)

It's fair to say 3 of the 4 AFCS teams came into the season in rebuilding mode. Which team would you say has progressed the most? Which regressed the most?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

The Jaguars have progressed the least. The Colts probably the most, considering they should be the furthest away since their rebuild just started.

Chris Berman (Buffalo)

I totally forgot I shouldn't bring biased team coverage up to you when it hits close to home with the Titans

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

<a href="http://proxy.espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/21028" target="_blank">Please read this to better understand this whole concept of bias</a>

James (Indianapolis)

For as highly touted as Andrew Luck has been do you find his completion percentage to be concerning?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

I do not. He throws the ball further down the field than anyone, and you complete fewer of those. Here's the big column on him.<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/42718/a-progress-report-on-andrew-luck-its-good" target="_blank" >A progress report on Luck (it's good)</a>

Arnaud (Belgium)

See you in London next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

I should start working on convincing the bosses I need to go.

Brian (Cville, VA )

Who has more receiving yards for the Jags next year....Blackmon or Shorts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

Better be Blackmon.

Troy (Houston)

Do you see Brooks Reed getting some work at ILB to give some rest to Dobbins since Mercilius is getting more confidence?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

I don't. And they shouldn't. I m not concerned about Dobbins getting rest. And it's a different position. Why play Reed out of position when he's good at his position?

Doug (MD)

In theory, Hughes should have a solid day Sunday, yes?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

In theory.

John (Nashville)

Is the injury-prone McCarthy really as good as everyone seems to think? Or did he make a couple good plays at opportune moments to mask his mediocrity?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:02 PM)

He's good when he's healthy. But he's not healthy often so far.

Brahman (Reliant)

as a 4th string OLB should I attempt to learn the Inside job as well so I can eventually emerge somewhere and not on special teams?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:02 PM)

Maybe, but it's not for you to decide.

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:04 PM)

Folks, I enjoyed it. I am glad we have so few fantasy questions and prediction requests these days. Feel like we've been together a long time now and understand each other. It touches me. Cheers.
