Sorry guys, Nick is running late. He said he'll be starting in "60 seconds."

Nick Friedell
  (1:14 PM)

What's going on, sorry I'm late, let's go.

Nate (Chicago)

I really enjoy watching Nate Robinson and Jimmy Butler playing the 1/2. Do you think we will be seeing more of that tandem come the season's start?

Nick Friedell
  (1:15 PM)

Yes. Thibs is counting on both players to be sparks off the bench. I'd expect to see a lot of them, especially early in the season.

Christina [via mobile]

Nick, Do you think Luol will ever leave the bulls? I really don't want him to he's a great player.

Nick Friedell
  (1:16 PM)

Yes. I think the chances of him clsoing out his career here are slim. My guess is Lu may only be with the Bulls for another year or two because of salary cap issues.

MitLane (Maryland)

Will Kirk's health be an ongoing theme? Will Rip be joining him in the training room too?

Nick Friedell
  (1:17 PM)

Yes and yes. Kirk has missed too many games over the last 2 seasons to think he'll go through this season without an injury.

Joe (Chicago)

Any chance the Bulls pull off a big trade this season? Or if not a trade, maybe sign Monta Ellis next summer or another top shooting guard on the market?

Nick Friedell
  (1:18 PM)

Doubtful. I don't expect the Bulls to make any major deal this season, aside from maybe trading Rip midway through the year if another team is interested. Because he's not a part of their long-term future.

Paul (Chicago)

Do you feel its better if rose sits for the year and has a full year and a half to get healthy or come back in late feb or march? i feel like he should sit the year so more time to rehab especially at such a young age

Nick Friedell
  (1:19 PM)

If Rose feels 100 percent healthy and Jerry Reinsdorf and his doctors sign off on him returning, I think he should play. If the Bulls struggle out of the gate and don't look like they did the last two years it wouldn't surprise me at all if he sits.

lyle [via mobile]

do you think jimmy butler has what it takes to be a great player at sg considering his size and athletic ability?

Nick Friedell
  (1:20 PM)

He has the tools. I don't think it's going to take another couple of years for him to grow into his game. Jimmy has to become a more consistent shooter in order to take the next step in his progression.

cory, bronx,ny [via mobile]

What superstar is realistic the bulls can get to pair with rose? This core as it stands can't and wont compete for a championship

Nick Friedell
  (1:21 PM)

That is the multi-million dollar question. There's no right answer right now. Kevin Love would be a great fit alongside Rose because of their friendship, but he would have to force a trade out of Minnesota. And even then, I don't know if that puts the Bulls past Miami if LeBron and Co. stay healthy.

Robledo (Fox Lake) [via mobile]

If Carlos Boozer has similar stats from last year at the end of this year, do the Bulls try to trade him after the season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:22 PM)

Nobody is going to trade for Boozer. Period.

Clare [via mobile]

I love Joakim and Luol. Do you think they will remain bulls for the rest of their lives? They can not leave

Nick Friedell
  (1:22 PM)

I already talked about Lu earlier, but I think Jo will stay here for the foreseeable future. It's too early to say whether he'll finish his career here.

Lizzy Croghan [via mobile]

Hi Nick, Do you think te bulls will make the playoffs this year? If what, which seed?

Nick Friedell
  (1:23 PM)

Yes, and I'd say five seed.

Luther Price (Chicago)

Assuming D. Rose comes back this season and is at full strength, where do the Bulls rank among the Eastern Conference in say February?

Nick Friedell
  (1:24 PM)

First of all, I don't think Derrick will be at full strength at any point this season. If he comes back around Feb. or March, I would still have the Bulls as the fourth best team in the East.

Bhavin (Deerfield, IL)

Nick. why are you late?

Nick Friedell
  (1:24 PM)

No excuses. Sorry. I've already been talked to about it.

Zach (Tucson) [via mobile]

Hey Nick, Even without Derrick for a few months at least, I still believe this team good enough to be a 3 or 4 seed in the east. And when he gets back, oh boy look eastern conference. Do you feel the same way?

Nick Friedell
  (1:25 PM)

Not this season. Derrick has to go through too much rehab to expect him to be the player that he was at any point this season.

Chad b plainfield. [via mobile]

Will the bulls give taj a new contract before the season starts?

Nick Friedell
  (1:26 PM)

It's a 50-50 chance. Both sides want to get deal done, but I think they're trying to work out the numbers and I think it will come down to the wire.

Jared (Chicago)

Hey Nick, I was sorely disappointed when the Bulls did not draft a scoring guard in the first round. I understand why we took teague with d rose out and him being the best player. But he looks very uncomfortable on the court. Do you think he will play any significant factor in the season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:27 PM)

No. He won't. He is 2-3 years away from being a significant factor.

Danny [via mobile]

What's your take on bellinellis poor play?

Nick Friedell
  (1:27 PM)

He's lost some confidence. He doesn't have a comfort level yet playing for Thibs. I think he will be better than he's been, but he's been the biggest disappointment of the preseason.

Chad b plainfield. [via mobile]

Where do u picture the bulls to be as far as wins and where they are expected to finish in the division?

Nick Friedell
  (1:28 PM)

I'm still optimistic that this team can win 50 games if they stay healthy. As far as the division, I think they'll finish behind Indiana.

Jason (Willowbrook)

What should we expect from Mirotic, and how long from now?

Nick Friedell
  (1:29 PM)

The Bulls are happy with his progress, but he's still at least 2-3 years away.

DY [via mobile]

If you don't see the bulls signing or trading for any big name superstar this coming offseason then should us bulls fans get used to seein a roster similar til what we have now for next couple coming seasons?

Nick Friedell
  (1:30 PM)

Yes. In my opinion, the next time the Bulls can make a major move is 2 summers from now. They'll amnesty Boozer and Deng's contract comes off the books.

Omer Asik (Houston, TX)

I love you, Nick!

Nick Friedell
  (1:30 PM)

Thanks Omer. We miss you too.

Jared (Chicago)

Even though its preseason, our offense reminds me at times too much of last years when we can go 5-10 minutes without a field goal. What gives? Who needs to step up? Boozer?

Nick Friedell
  (1:31 PM)

He's been alright the last couple games. The problem is there's no Derrick. This is the new reality at times for the first few months of the season.

Joe (Walsh)

How many years left do you think Deng can play at a high level? I know he has his wrist issues along with all the minutes he has played these past couple seasons. Thanks.

Nick Friedell
  (1:32 PM)

I think Lu can play at a high level for at least 5-6 more years. The question will the Bulls pay what it takes to keep him around. He is a great player but he's not the 2nd start on a championship caliber team.

Tom (Chicago)

It looks like the bulls made the right move with Omir if Nazr keeps producing like he has in preseason

Nick Friedell
  (1:33 PM)

I wouldn't expect Nazr's preseason numbers to carry over to the regular season. He's a solid vet, fits in well in the locker room but he's not near the defensive presence Omer is. Having said that, I agree they shouldn't have matched the offer to Omer.

Argie Grigorakos, Toronto Ontario [via mobile]

Going on your gut, when do you think DRose returns?

Nick Friedell
  (1:34 PM)

Middle of March, but that's just a guess. Like everybody else is guessing right now.

Corbin (Chicago)

There are rumors on the street that Rose will not play this season. Do you think him not playing this season is contingent on whether the org wants to play it safe or is it contingent upon how well the Bulls are playing at AllStar Break?

Nick Friedell
  (1:34 PM)

It's contingent on Jerry and his doctors signing off on him to play. They will make final call.

Darnell smith [via mobile]

Who would u have to turn to if kirk hinrich and nate robinson get injured or banged up.

Nick Friedell
  (1:35 PM)

You'd have to make a trade. Marquis Teague simply isn't ready to play right now. The Bulls are just very thin at point guard because of Rose's injury.

Bulls Fan (CA)

Can you please stop writing negative articles about the Bulls? What kind of beat writer spends a majority of the time writing glass half full articles for the team he covers?

Nick Friedell
  (1:38 PM)

I'm just telling it like it is. On a personal level, I've enjoyed covering the players and coaches and front office, I just don't think this group as currently constructed looks good enough to win a title, and that's with Derrick healthy. I'm actually an optimist at heart, but as Herm Edwards would say, you play to win the game. And I just don't think this team is good enough to get past Miami right now.

Sam Vazcones Grayslake IL [via mobile]

With the game on the line whos going to have the ball in their hands?

Nick Friedell
  (1:39 PM)

My guess is Rip. The problem with this roster without Derrick is there isn't one guy who can consistenly create his own shot off the dribble.

Pavan (Miami Beach)

What does Coach Thibs need to do to get better play out of the bench?

Nick Friedell
  (1:39 PM)

Bring back Korver, Brewer and Watson. But that's not going to happen. The key now is patience. Thibs will get them to play better, but it's going to take a long time.

Brandon Kim (Palatine, IL)

Nick,Without a go-to player like Derrick Rose, the bulls have to efficient with their team offense. My question is, is there any free agents or veterans we can go after on the cheap to boost our offense.

Nick Friedell
  (1:40 PM)

No. Without Derrick this is the reality. No game-changer on the market.

Varnell Smith Park Forest IL [via mobile]

I could see us trying to get kevin martin too for kirk hinrich and belinie

Nick Friedell
  (1:41 PM)

I don't think the Bulls feel that would be much of an upgrade with the money left on Martin's contract.

JUSTICE (Bloomington,IN)

Obvious question: What is the latest on our boy, D.ROSE?

Nick Friedell
  (1:41 PM)

Nothing new. He's still doing the same rehab every day. He's still several months away from being close to playing again.

Tommy (Springfield)

Thibs said he'd use Radmanovic more in the last few pre-season games, and he still didn't play last game. I know he's a little out of shape, but he seems capable.

Nick Friedell
  (1:42 PM)

I don't think he'll be much of a factor at all this year. He is this year's version of Scal.

Darnell Smith Park Forest IL [via mobile]

If marco belinie continues to slump maybe we could trade him to sacromento for tyreke evans

Nick Friedell
  (1:43 PM)

In your dreams.

Tom (Chicago)

Wouldnt the bulls be wise to play for the 6/7 seed and hope Rose is back and can avoid Miami until ECF?

Nick Friedell
  (1:44 PM)

In theory, it's a good idea. The issue for the Bulls is even if Derrick returns, he's not going to be the same player everyone grew to love watching the last few years. Maybe next season, but not now.

Dave (Evergreen Park)

Would you say this year's new look bench has the more, less, or the same amount of talent and versatility as the old bench mob, and how big a factor do you think chemistry will be in terms of how effective they can be?

Nick Friedell
  (1:45 PM)

All things being equal, I'd much rather have the old bench mob. Over time, I think this new group once they learn their roles will be adequate together. Chemistry is always a big issue. The old bench mob had it. It will take a few months to see if this new group can develop like the old one.

Joel (Chicago)

Mr. Friedell,Thank you for taking my question and I appreciate you doing this chat. What exactly is the situation with Luol Deng given he did not have surgery? And can we expect Thibs to actually give Deng more bench minutes and let Butler have more floor time at the 3?

Nick Friedell
  (1:47 PM)

Lu is goign to play the same amount of minutes he always did. He has maintained the wrist won't be an issue although he hasnt' ruled out having the surgery. Given how much pain he endured last season it's hard to imagine a situation where he goes through this season unscathed but he feels confident he can make it throught he whole year with no surgery. He said he may never have to have it.

Nick Friedell
  (1:48 PM)

Thanks for all the great questions. I'll be at SOuth Bend tomorrow. If you're at the game please come down and say hello. We'll chat again next week.
