Chat with Mel Kiper

  (12:59 PM)

Mel is here!

Jay (NY)

How does Manti Teo compare to Luke Kuelchy?

Mel Kiper
  (1:01 PM)

He'll have a higher grade. More of a dominating presence. Most of his stops are around the line of scrimmage. Luke was an outstanding open field tackler, but he wasn't a guy to get after the QB. Plus Te'o has 5 INTs already this year. He's a guy that has instincts in coverage. He's a little more complete. He'll have a slightly higher grade.

David (URI)

Thoughts on Chandler Jones? Is this what you expected? And what does the future hold for him?

Mel Kiper
  (1:01 PM)

He wasn't healthy his whole final year at Syracuse. He would have had a higher grade. He's given a big boost, which they needed and it's still not a great defense. He has a bright future in this league. They just need more guys like him.

Keenan (Atlanta, GA)

How negatively does another poor performance in a big game damage Aaron Murray's draft stock? Does he need to return to Athens for another season?

Mel Kiper
  (1:03 PM)

When you don't have the tremendous physical ability, it's always best to play out your college career. I would say go back. My attitude is if you're not a first round pick, you should stay. Knowing that he has those two great RBs returning. King will go, but he has some young talented WRs there. They have a lot of talent around the QB, so returning would probably be in the best interests.

Jim (NY)

What is Jarvis Jones ideal position in the NFL? OLB in a 3-4 or DE in a 4-3?

Mel Kiper
  (1:04 PM)

He'll be a 3-4 OLB. He plays on his feet. He gets a lot of tackles for loss. Plus he's a very serious determined professional football player. He's highly regarded. He battles through injury. He played at the highest level without being at 100%. He's the No. 1 player on the Big Board.

Nick (Ames)

Howdy Mel! Terrible news out of Ames this week in losing star Linebacker Jake Knott for the season... What do you think this does to his draft stock if anything? Is he a 3rd to 4th round type of player?

Mel Kiper
  (1:05 PM)

I had him in the fourth round going into the season. He and AJ Klein also has a solid grade. Knott's been a consistent player. He's also projected to be a mid round guy.

Josh (St.Louis)

Whats your opinion of Sam Bradford. Do you view him as a franchise caliber qb.

Mel Kiper
  (1:07 PM)

Not yet. I would say that's reserved for just a few, franchise QBs. He's on the cusp, but he needs to get some more help. They have to get better at WR. Hopefully Brian Quick continues to develop. They need to get Amendola back. There's been talk about trading Steven Jackson. If they fortify the talent around him, he's shown some of the elements needed. We'll know next year. It will have to be his year, after they get more talent around him with the development of the WRs.

John (NYC)

How long can the Redskins continue to run a college offense? Is an offense that relies on deception, gadget plays and designed qb runs sustainable in today's NFL?

Mel Kiper
  (1:09 PM)

It's almost like when a pitcher goes through the lineup and around the 3-4 inning they start to get to you. LeBeau now is 14-1 against rookie QBs. He's got an incredible record when he has to design a defense against rookies. A lot of things hinged on the fact that Washington's defense is banged up. Santana Moss is his go-to guy, which is not good. He doesn't have a No. 1 WR. Overall, let's see in the next few weeks. Right now, there are tendencies of things RGIII likes to do and defenses are adjusting, so now he has to adjust as well.

Maximus (MA)

Hi Mel, I was watching the USC game this weekend and Marquis Lee was simply amazing!!!! Is he the next great WR in the league ala AJ Green, Julio Jones? Also how good is the top of next years draft w/ Clowney and Lee?

Mel Kiper
  (1:11 PM)

He's not as big as those guys, but he has that same type of wow factor going for him. He's only a true sophomore, so he's not draft eligible. He's an elite guy. If he were in this draft he'd be the top WR clearly. He'd probably be in the top 5-7 overall if he were in this draft.

Mel Kiper
  (1:11 PM)

He's one of several sophomore prospects that aren't eligible for the draft.

Paul (Detroit)

How scary for the Big Ten and the rest of the country is it that Urban Meyer is probably going to go 12-0 with a mediocre roster that is not at all stocked with his recruits?

Mel Kiper
  (1:14 PM)

He's got the QB, though. When you have a dynamic, big time sophomore QB, you're ahead of the game. That elevates everyone around him. They've won some close games against inferior teams. They struggled with Cal at home, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue. There have been some games that easily could have been losses. And their LB Shazier has had a great year. He's one of the best sophomores out there. Definitely the fact that they win so many games is the combination of Meyer and Miller. Meyer's been fortunate with having good QBs, Alex Smith in Utah, Chris Leak and Tim Tebow at Florida and now.

Mel Kiper
  (1:15 PM)

But the bottom line is are they going to get another Braxton Miller? The bottom line is they'll have him for two more years.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Mel, on paper Notre Dame has to contend with Oregon and K-State for a BCS title berth. But in reality, does an undefeated Fighting Irish team not play for the national title?

Mel Kiper
  (1:17 PM)

It depends on how it all shakes down. It's a shame for all of the fans of college football that there's no playoff. There is one in every other sport. It doesn't always shake down to 2 teams. It's unfortunate that they're expanding to 4 but that won't happen until next year and I don't think that's enough. If a team loses a game, it shouldn't push them out of the equation. It all comes down to scheduling. Notre Dame answered a big question in Oklahoma. No one gave them a chance. If Notre Dame beats USC, then I would think they're deserving to play for a national title.

Mel Kiper
  (1:19 PM)

It's not a level playing field in college football either. There's no conference championship in some leagues. Notre Dame won't have to play in a conference championship. I don't know how you justify the whole thing and try to make judgements on why one team is better and one isn't.

John (Wisc)

With Lattimores' recent injury how does that change the RB position this year for the draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:20 PM)

Unfortunately, it takes the best RB out of the equation. He was on the way to being a first or second round pick. Now, the top guy is Giovani Bernard. No. 2 from the junior class, Le'Veon Bell. I have no RB in my top 25.

Odell Ping (Atlanta)

Mel who are your top 3 OT's in 2013 draft? thanks

Mel Kiper
  (1:22 PM)

No. 1 is Luke Joechel, No. 5 in the country. Taylor Lewan, Michigan is No. 2. No. 3 Eric Fisher, No. 18 overall. Also, they're all LTs. The top RT is Jake Matthews, Texas A-M and he's No. 21 on the Big Board. Also, there are two OGs on the Big Board: Chance Warmack Jonathan Cooper.

joseph (miami)

Is there any wide outs worth taking in the first round of this years draft? If so, who should the dolphins pick to get Ryan T. some help?

Mel Kiper
  (1:23 PM)

Possibly. Right now, there's no super blue chip. Keenan Allen, Terrence Williams, Justin Hunter. They have first round grades, but that doesn't mean they'll maintain that. The top slot WR is Tayvon Austin from WVU.

patrickj145 (sasrsota)

do you think the chicago bears have a shot atwinning the nfc?

Mel Kiper
  (1:25 PM)

It will be tough. There is a lot of competition. In the AFC, I'd say yes. They have a shot, yeah. But I don't think they'll come out of the NFC. Their defense is very strong. But Jay Cutler is too eratic. You don't know what you're getting week to week with the offense. In the NFC, you have Atlanta, Green Bay, the Giants, San Francisco. It would be a mild surprise, but with their defense and if you get Cutler on the right day then you never know. The bottom line is if you get into the tournament, you have a shot.

Mel Kiper
  (1:26 PM)

The big thing is the OL has to play better week to week. Cutler gets hit a lot. Their OL has to play a lot better, rather than telling Cutler just to survive.

Josh (Cinci)

Is Geno Smith still the top QB? Could you see Barkley taking back over his claim as the #1 QB?

Mel Kiper
  (1:27 PM)

I never moved Barkley behing Smith. Smith has some very important games coming up. Barkley has a big one against Oregon this week. The next three games, especially against Oklahoma, will be big for Smith. And the Senior Bowl week will be critical for both of these guys.

Paul (Appleton, WI)

Is there a chance that Justin Gilbert converts to FS?

Mel Kiper
  (1:28 PM)

I see him as a CB. He has tremendous physical ability. Great athlete. Great CB. He had some good battles against Justin Blackmon when he was there. When he tests out, he'll test out as one of the elite CBs in terms of computer numbers. He's fast, he can leap.

Craig (Massachusetts)

Is there anyone in this draft that fits a short term pure pass rusher a la Bruce Irvin and Aldon Smith?

Mel Kiper
  (1:31 PM)

Smith was the better pass rusher than Irvin at the college level. Irvin is one dimensional right now. He doesn't help against the run. And he has four sacks that all came in two games. Irvin was a good collegiate player. This year Damontre Moore is the guy. Mingo was supposed to be that guy, but he's slipped.

Mel Kiper
  (1:32 PM)

Tank Carradine, Ezekiel Ansah are a couple of other pass rushers.

Joe (San Antonio)

Being a Maryland guy, how bad is the quarterback situation at UM?

Mel Kiper
  (1:34 PM)

It's a shame what's happened there with so many injuries. They had a QB injured early. They've gone through more QBs than anyone else. They could have won a lot more football games. They only lost by three to UConn. They were close with WVU. It can't get any worse with injury. They have a kid coming in from the Maryland high school system. He's a tough kid with a Tim Tebow mentality. It's forcing them to play a ton of guys. They'll have a lot of guys at QB next year. This season isn't over yet, but they're 4-4. Randy Edsall has silenced his critics.

John (Wisc)

Who are the top TE's in the draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:36 PM)

At No. 26 or 27 is Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame. Also, Zach Ertz, junior, Stanford, is in the second round discussion. Jordan Reid, Florida, is a great athlete. Dion Sims, Michigan State. The top senior TE is Chris Gragg, Arksansas.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Were mechanics ever an issue with Matt Stafford at Georgia or has he regressed?

Mel Kiper
  (1:37 PM)

I don't see anything wrong with him. Mechanics aren't an issue with him. Amazingly accurate from a number of arm angles. The OL is an issue. Calvin Johnson has had some drops. Ryan Broyles has shown flashes. Stafford is a franchise QB and he brought them back to win the game last week.

Randy (Grove, OK)

How can the Chiefs be this bad? Is it just the QB position killing them or does this club seriously lack talent?

Mel Kiper
  (1:39 PM)

They have some talent, but if you don't have a QB in this league you're going to have some issues. Look what Manning is doing for Denver this year. They're going to run away with the division. KC doesn't have anything close to being elie. If they had a quality QB, they'd be in the thick of things. Brady Quinn was going to be the guy, but he got hurt last week. He's not playing Thursday night and they'll have to go back to Matt Cassel

Robert (Las Vegas)

Browns need a FB to lay tracks for T-Rich, any good ones this year?

Mel Kiper
  (1:40 PM)

They drafted a FB a few years ago. This team could really use another WR. Josh Gordon was a good supplemental draft pick for them. They could use some help at LB. Their back end looks good. Adding another WR would be good. They have to hope as they keep improving that Brandon Weeden is the right QB.

Mel Kiper

The top FBs are Trey Millard, Oklahoma, junior, 3-4 round; Zach Line, SMU; Zach Boren, Ohio State.

Donald (Eugene)

How do Dion Jordan and the other seniors on Oregon's defense rank?

Mel Kiper
  (1:42 PM)

Jordan's the top guy. From the senior DE group, he's No. 4. He's their top overall prospect on that side of the ball. He has a good burst. He can play up on his feet or as a DE.

Mike (Oregon)

Hi Mel, I was watching the Clemson game Thursday night and Sammy Watkins was awesome!! What kind of pro prospect is he? Can he be a top 10 level WR in the NFL?

Mel Kiper
  (1:44 PM)

He's one of those sensational sophomores that we talked about. He's an elite sophomore. He had the great freshmen year. He's been spectacular. When you have speed at RB, another good WR opposite Watkins and a QB that can get them the ball, that's why they're scoring like they are. Watkins and Lee are the elite sophomores.

Jack (Cleveland)

What is Braxton Miller's NFL future? He could be an unbelievable running back if he can put on some weight and turns in a fast enough 40 at the 2014 combine. He has the best open field moves I have ever seen.

Mel Kiper
  (1:45 PM)

He's a QB. He has tremendous speed. Tremendous burst. He has a strong arm. Good release. He'll get better and better as a passer.

Brian (Greensboro, NC)

Thoughts on South Carolina WR Ace Sanders?

Mel Kiper
  (1:46 PM)

Great return guy. He's diminutive in size, but he can hurt you on the field. He's spectacular on the punt return. The size will be the only concern.

Peter (Fredericton NB)

Mel,Do you see Notre-Dame losing to California in a few weeks time? Mike Wilbon is of the opinion that they will.

Mel Kiper
  (1:48 PM)

The USC game is the one that you'd look at as a potential upset. You have a scenario coming up where a Pitt team comes into South Bend in a game where Notre Dame is expected to roll. Pitt has some talent, but Notre Dame should win. At BC, they should roll again. Wake Forest has had a rough year. They shouldn't have any problem the next few weeks. The Pitt game is the one for concern, because you could have a let down game.

Mel Kiper
  (1:49 PM)

I'm not about to say he's the future. I had some concerns about his coming out of Washington. He had some injury issues in college and now in the NFL. I would not say yet that he's a franchise guy. You have to assess whether or not this QB can lead you to a Super Bowl. If you don't think he can, you have to get rid of him. But they also need more talent. They need more WRs.

John (Wisc)

If the season ended today, What positions would you feel the Packers would need the most in the draft?

Mel Kiper
  (1:50 PM)

The OL is a big concern moving forward. That's the big area of concern. The RB situation, getting a consistent running game.

Dana (Flower Mound, TX)

What do you see as the upset for college football week 10? Thank you.

Mel Kiper
  (1:52 PM)

Alabama, obviously, because they're dealing with LSU. Oklahoma State is a dangerous team, so Kansas State. They can't afford any 'C' game performances.

Bob (kentucky)

how good can randall cobb become? A poor man's percy harvin? thanks.

Mel Kiper
  (1:53 PM)

Harvin is awfully good. I wouldn't want to go there, but I think Cobb can be really good. As long as he's consistent catching the ball and in the return game doing well with ball security. He's a jack of all trades, remember he played QB at Kentucky. Can he be as dynamic as Percy Harvin? No.

Kyle (Toronto)

Do you think Buffalo will look to make an upgrade at Quarterback with their First Round pick?

Mel Kiper
  (1:54 PM)

I think they have to look at it, yeah. Fitzpatrick had the bad INT toward the end of the game. That's an assessment you have to make. And the defense has been a major issue. They spent a lot of money on the defense and it's been a bust. They have to get better there. Their defense has been horrible.

Lou (Gaithersburg, MD)

Thoughts on Bill O'Brien so far? Do you think he will be able to get enough players up to the NFL to keep enough recruits coming to keep them competitive during the penalty period?

Mel Kiper
  (1:56 PM)

He's done a phenomenal job. He's the coach of the year. Even though they lost to OSU, they were competitive. He's gotten better than average play out of QB. They put a competitive team on the field. They're 5-3. They should at worst get to 6-6. They have to win against Purdue, because you've got Nebraska and Wisconsin coming up.

Mel Kiper
  (1:56 PM)

The big games are Alabama and LSU and Oregon-USC. Those four teams will tell us a lot about this season. After this week we'll get a lot more answers.
