Chat with Farrell Evans

Farrell Evans
  (2:59 PM)

Welcome to my 3pm eastern chat. Several good players in China this week for the HSBC including Phil and Bubba; the Champions Tour is holding its season-ending Charles Schwab Cup; Rory is in the news after leaving Titleist and beating Tiger in an exhibition.

farrell, do you place any stock in the argument that rory's game will suffer due to his eventual equipment change? if so, where do you think he sufferes most? drive? irons? Wedge play? putting?

Farrell Evans
  (3:04 PM)

None whatsoever. Rory will take as much time as he can to make the proper adjustments with the new gear before he puts it into action. But if I had doubts, I would go with the driver. There is a very weird science to drivers. The shaft, the driver, the feel of the face, the tip point. It's probably the club that puts the greatest pressure on your game.

JY (TO)

You ever heard of Jeff Todd? He is coming up the mini tour circuits. He will be a household name eventually

Farrell Evans
  (3:04 PM)

No, tell me about him?

JY (TO)

what is the next golf tourney you are looking forward to?

Farrell Evans
  (3:05 PM)

The Masters. It's always nice to see which players start the season hot, but there is nothing like that first weekend in April.

Dan (Mechanicsburg, PA)

Hi Farrell. Hope the hurricane didn't hit you and/or your family too hard! Any news on damage to Bethpage? I think I heard 90% of Long Island is still without power?

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

Bethpage miraculously didn't get any significant damage as a result of the storm. I live in North Manhattan on a high point on the island. So we didn't have any problems.

JY (TO)

Did you watch the web.com finale? If so, thoughts? I found it highly entertaining. Alot on the line for alot of young guys

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

I watched a good bit of it on Sunday. I'm excited to see particularly how the top three off the money list will do: Casey Wittenberg, Luke Guthrie and Russell Henley.Henley is probably the most impressive of the three. It was a surprise that he didn't get his card last year. He has the game to win immediately on the PGA Tour.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will there be a PGA Tour event to be played around Christmas?

Farrell Evans
  (3:12 PM)

No, Chris.

Dan (Mechanicsburg, PA)

Great to hear - about both Bethpage and your home. Re: Rory and Nike - if it happens, I will be interested in seeing who Nikes pimps more - Tiger or Rory. Perhaps more than a few ads with both of them, seeing as though they have developed quite the friendship this year. In any event, HUGE score for Nike if it happens!

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

Dan,Tiger hasn't been in many Nike ads recently. I think Nike is hedging its bets on Rory being the next great thing. However I hear it might not be a head to toe deal. Rory might only carry the bag and play the clubs. He would continue with his Oakley and Jumeriah deals. That's just speculation, though. Also for the reported $20 million he might receive, they can pimp him all they want.

Farrell Evans
  (3:21 PM)

Dan,Those are pretty good predictions. All I will add is that one of Rory's wins will be a major.

Dan (Mechanicsburg, PA)

Good point on Tiger and ads. I'm thinking that might increase now that his incident is a few years in the past and he is back to his winning ways. Speaking of the two, what is your prediction for wins/majors for both Tiger and Rory in 2013? I'm going 5 wins for Tiger with 1 major and 3 wins for Rory with 0 majors.

Jamie (Indiana)

Heard a rumor that Tiger's golf ball is actually a ProV1 that Titleist has NIKE put a 'swoosh' on. Have you ever heard of such a thing?!?

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

Jamie,I don't know the truth of that but many players have told me that there are not significant differences in the balls. It's probably true that when Tiger made the switch to the Nike ball, his engineers at the shoe company made sure that the ball was at least as good as what he was playing.

Doug (GA)

Tiger was quoted as saying the hardest switch he had was from the wound Titleist ball to the solid core Nike ball. Having made the same switch in my game, I can believe it. I also can't believe Nike would pay RM $20 million/year without it being a head to toe deal. In fact, I don't believe Nike has a deal with any player that is NOT head to toe.

Farrell Evans
  (3:32 PM)

Anthony Kim and Tiger are the only two Nike players that I know who don't carry its bag. Nike likes a very clean, uncluttered look on its players.

Dan (Mechanicsburg, PA)

I'd love to know the # of questions you receive "in season" - April through September - versus the # you receive the last couple months of the year. I'm happy to be here chatting, but golf really DOES have an off season...

Farrell Evans
  (3:39 PM)

Dan,Good question.

Dan (Mechanicsburg, PA)

Since I seem to be the only one here (where is Shoshana?), how many majors do you think Tiger ends up with? Rory? Phil? And do you think Garcia, Donald and/or Westwood ever get one? I'll say Tiger 20, Rory 12, Phil 4 and Westwood is the only Euro of that group to get to 1.

Farrell Evans
  (3:45 PM)

Shoshana must be observing the off season. As for your questions.. I think Rory and Tiger will get one major each in 2012. Of those three majorless players you mentioned, I think Luke Donald will be the first to win, despite his less than stellar overall record in the big four. Westwood should get it done, but he's fired his swing coach and was way out of sorts at the end of the season. Even after winning a point at the Ryder Cup, he seemed a little disinterested. I hope he can pull it together next year. It's getting late in his career.

Rick (DC)

Farrell, name some of the up and coming golfers that you see making a splash next year. Henley, Cantaly, etc?

Farrell Evans
  (3:51 PM)

Russell Henley and Luke Guthrie top my list. Henley might be the best of that crop of Georgia players that have surfaced on the tour in recent years. Guthrie played just 10 events on the Web.Com, winning two and easily earning his card. On the one hand, i look for a guy who had a long consistent year like Henley. Then on the other hand I look at players like Guthrie and Ben Kohles, who really play well over a handful of weeks. These guys have a special gear that will help them on the big tour.

Bob (Seattle)

What do you make of Tiger's comments about his inability to control short irons with Sean? Is it a bad sign for Sean or more of a this is what I'm working on?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

Bob,TW is the consummate geek. He has complained that he sometimes hits the ball too far with the Foley swing, but that he has more shots in his arsenal. You'll go crazy trying to understand the machinations of Tiger's approach to the golf swing. Remember he won 14 majors before he ever knew the name of Sean Foley. He needs a process and it's Sean's job to give him one.

g.p. (nd)

Farrell, do you think Phil will ever win another major?

Farrell Evans
  (3:55 PM)

Lefty is 42. His kids are growing up. He's battled some minor injuries and ailments. I know that he still has the desire. So it will be interesting to see if he can sustain that desire over a full season. That's the question.

Guest (Palm Beach)

From what I understand TW Nike equipment are specifically tailored to his specifications. His Nike ball is not sold in stores. Thats how Nike operates for the brand endorsers. If Mcilroy joins, I would imagine thathe would command the same things too

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

Of course. But at the same time, Nike can't breach another's company's patents to fulfill a player's specifications. So there will be subtle differences.

Matt (Chicago)

Who breaks their major drought first: Tiger or Phil?

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

Tiger at the 2013 Masters.

Doug (GA)

FWIW (and I'm admittedly biased), I really like the UGA contingent on tour for next season. I hope Swafford is out there soon.

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

Doug,After Hud won I thought for sure he would get his card and he still can at Q-school. He's got the total game.

Matt (Chicago)

How early do you have to be at Bethpage to get on as a single?

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

It's not that hard. There are always threesomes around. You would be surprised.

Doug (GA)

We've beaten the "Rory to Nike" drum long enough. Any other major players making equipment changes for 2013 that you have heard?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

I'm not sure. You don't find those things out really until the start of the year when you see them on the range with a different hat and bag.

Rick (DC)

When do we expect the R&A to make their decision on long putters? And what do you think?

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

Rick,It's too late to make a change. But if I were setting the rule, I wouldn't let the players rest any part of the handle or the shaft on their bodies. You can still do wonders with that thing the old fashioned way. Take care guys. Thanks for joining me on this sleepy day in the world of golf.
