Welcome. Let's get started.
Lane Kiffin was out-coached on Saturday and this is really nothing new or surprising. What are the chances that he is gone by the end of the season and who would be potential candidates to replace him? It is embarrassing to continually lose games like this when there is such an obvious talent disparity between the two teams.
I understand what you're saying but there is way too much football left to be played to know the potential status of the coach. Right now there is a lot of displeasure from the Trojan family toward Kiffin and the best way he can look to change that is by winning some games over the next few weeks.
USC can still win (THE B1G sux) the Rose if they win out. I think anything less then that and we start losing recruits. What u think?
Anything less than that would be a blow, I would agree to that. guys like Barkley and McDonald didn't come back for the Sun Bowl. As far as recruits though, I don't know how that impact would be but it's certainly something to pay attention to. A couple recruits are already starting to take trips and keep the options open.
Garry what bowl game will the trojans play if they go undefeated
Gp I Am Hoping That Max Redfield Doesn't Decomitt From USC Or Sebastian LaRue Or Any Of The Other 18 Trojan Commits See I Think Of Them As Family In All My Life But All 18 Trojans Stick Together As 1 Big Trojan Family
It would be a coup to keep all 18 together, that just seems to be a function of recruiting these days. The coaches are trying though, they have spent a lot of time maintaining the relationships with the recruits and reminding them of how important they are to the program. The commits themselves have also done a great job of staying in touch with each other.
Third and 22. What happened on that play?
Too much open space in the middle of the field. Tough to see in that situation.
So you chicken'd out the Cowboy Classic to start the year and now we won't get to kick your butt in Miami, what a shame.
Good luck the rest of the way coach.
Barkley is starting to remind me of John David Booty -- an immobile quarterback. Is this kid Max Browne, the new QB sensation, able to move in the pocket and even run the ball? I was really, really impressed with AZ QB Matt Scott's mobility and would love for USC to have a QB like that.
I wouldn't call Max Browne a Matt Scott-type of quarterback. Max is a classic pocket passer, reminds me somewhat of Peyton Manning with his frame and movement in the pocket. USC tried hard to recruit Jake Rodriguez last year, he ended up at Oregon, and he is a guy who is a dual-threat player. I don't think SC will shy away from that kind of guy if he is good enough.
We have to be a run first offense. All we do is Pad our individual stats, and WHY AREN'T WE USING OUR TIGHTENDS MORE OFTEN??
You bring up two of the biggest criticisms of the offense. A lot of people would like to see SC use the run more, it's been a staple of Trojan football for a long time. And the tight ends are as good of a pair as you will find, it's a surprise that they haven't been used more.
Where does Marqise Lee stand in winning the Biletnioff Award or even winning the heisman if USC wins out the rest of the season
I saw one Heisman tracker today that had Lee ahead of Barkley, ranked somewhere around 7-8. I think you can make a strong argument for him for the Biletnikoff, especially if he closes strong in some of the remaining high profile games. His performance on Saturday was one of the best i've ever seen in college football.

Will Matt Barkley be known as the QB who holds all the USC and PAC -12 passing records but failed to lead his team to glory?
I'll answer that question in a month. It may seem far-fetched to think that the Trojans could run the table and get to the Rose Bowl but they control their fate to do it. A run that like would be a fitting ending for Barkley.
I'm going to say it now Barkely is at best a Carson Palmer when he go Pro, but I think more like a Blaine Gabbert. He missed a wide open Wood when they need it the most! and Over threw a semi open Lee. No wonder USC don't run a hurry up Barkely is not capable of it. Oregon would have scored twice with that much time left against AZ.
That miss to Woods was critical, no doubt about it. That's the kind of moment you think is tailor-made for a senior big-time quarterback and it was really magnified when it didn't happen. As great as Barkley as been in his career, these next weeks are going to provide the final chapter to his legacy and I don't think anybody really knows how it will turn out.
Hey Garry, Do you think Lane finally decides to hire a O.C. or does he continue to call the plays. And is there something wrong with Barkley, he seems very uncomfortable this year? Hopefully it doesn't hurt him to much come NFL Draft time.
I think there is a very good chance that Kiffin will look to hire an offensive coordinator in off-season. He's discussed the possibility and even talked this year about the difficulties of handling both roles. Unless things drastically change with the offense over the next month, it's one thing he would probably end up doing. There are a lot of potential scenarios that have been discussed on Barkley, many revolving around the thought of him getting banged up earlier in the year, possibly against Stanford. I don't know, there hasn't been any kind of confirmation of that from the school or Matt.
Hello Garry. Can you explain to me why we continue to rush 3 on 3rd and long? I'm not a coach by any means, but if my line can get to the QB before his WRs can run 22 yards, I like my chances at stopping them.
One of the biggest surprises to me about the Arizona game was the lack of pressure that the Trojans got on Matt Scott. No sacks by USC, a team that had been getting tons of pressure early in the year. It will really be important this week as Oregon does a great job of protecting the QB and they get rid of the ball quickly.
Hi Gary. I think we are beginning to see CLK's shortcomings when it comes to coaching. That last drive at Arizona looked like it was coached by my high school volleyball coach. I think you have to look at the coach for the penalties as well. Carrol's teams were dominant and aggressive, but rarely penalized.
It's been a tough week for Kiffin as a lot of people are bringing up the same things. That last drive was hard to understand, even after Kiffin tried to explain his thinking in the media call this week. I've talked to a few former quarterbacks this week about it and all of them agreed that the Trojans should have been spiking the ball.
Garry, plain and simple our team stinks and the problems start and end with everyone with the last name Kiffen. Our problems range from the obvious penalties, to the offensive/defensive game plan, and lack of 2nd half adjustments. How realistic is it to believe that this is the last year we have to put up with Monte Kiffen's inept defense? Does Lane even hear the cries and gnashing of teeth from Trojan faithful regarding his play calling and the waste of USC's talent?
I can't imagine that Lane isn't feeling the increased pressure this week. The critics are out after what happened last Saturday and the vast majority of attacks are aimed directly at Lane and his dad. That family has been in this business a long time so they know how it works, the best answer would be to get some wins in the next few weeks.
Other than Barkeley and Lee (and maybe Robey), can you name another current USC starter who would start on the best of the Carroll teams? McDonald over Mays? Pullard or Bailey over Cushing or Matthews? Woods over Williams or Jarrett? Any OL or DL? Redd or Morgan over Bush? Maybe we're just not that good.
I hear the point you are making but you are also putting the current players up in comparison to a collection of some of the greatest talent ever to come together at one time in college football.
Hey Garry, I beat Michigan, Michigan State, Miami, Stanford, and Oklahoma in one year. Any chance your boy Kiffen is shaking in his boots now that his #1 rank recruiting class can see how much he sucks as a head coach? Which is worst, the fact that USC's failed miserably to live up to expectations or the fact that ND exceeded expectations and is back to being relevant?
See you on November 24 coach. The Trojans will be there.
Hi Garry,It's very disappointing watching this team play. The lack of discipline and motivation this team diplays is a direct reflection of the current coaching staff. It's not that they lose, but it's how they lose that is so frustrating. One look at the sideline in the second half and you could tell they were going to lose the game. There is no doubting Lane is a great recruiter and sometimes can have flashes as an offensive coordinator. But has a head coach this just isn't working. Last year was a fluke, if SC continues with him as a head coach we can expect 8-4, 7-5 seasons. Lane came in as a package deal with his dad and it's obvious he's not going to get rid of him. Haden needs to make a change at the end of the season regardless of the outcome. Hopefully SC can win one of the next four.
Your words echo a lot of frustrated USC fans this week.
Garry, I came into this season with a 4 year starter at QB, 2 star WR, and 2 1,000 yd running backs, yet the extent of my playing ability focuses on a WR screen or a pass into the flat. I hear the rumblings of the Trojan Faithful calling for a full implementation of the spread offense, the cries to fire my Old Man, and for me to hire an OC. How long can I keep blaming the "lack of scholarships" for my teams penalty problems, lack of a running game, suspect passing game, Pop's Tampa Two sieve of a defense, and my lack of 2nd half adjustments?
Your biggest problem is misspelling your last name.
Garry, if the losses continue how worried should Trojan fans be about our recruiting class?
I'm not sure about that Chris, I think it would depend on how the losses play out. The class seems to be doing a good job so far of sticking together with a few minor wandering eyes.
Garry, we don't have the personnel to play in a Pro-style offense like Alabama but we do have the personnel to play like Oklahoma State. How is it that we have Farmer, Aghlor, Flournoy, Blackwell, Telfer, Grimble and we STILL have trouble out scoring the likes of Stanford or Arizona? Maybe I'm naive but the New England Patriots offensive scheme seems like a model of success. Why can't Lane see his offense is too complicated, antiquated, and hard to watch as a fan?P.S. Can this coaching staff do anything other than recruit?
I would disagree somewhat. While I do think SC could succeed in a spread, I do think the Trojans have the personnel to play a pro-style system. There was nothing wrong with the pro-style over the final stretch of 2011 and there's nothing wrong with the system now, it's just a matter of having things come together, which hasn't really happened too often this year. This last stretch of the year will be a big statement on Kiffin's coaching and a lot of that will have to do with how he manages the offense.
I came back for this? My team looks bad and any hopes of a BCS chip and a Heisman trophy are dead and buried. To make matters worse, my draft prospects are sinking faster than Mark Sanchez's pro career. If we lose to Oregon, ND, and (Heaven forbid) UCLA who gets more of the blame: me or the Kiffens? And how will the "Barkley Era" be remembered?
The good thing is the real Matt Barkley would never talk like that.
Hey how's it going Garry love always hearing your insight on Sc. Do you think LK should bring in an OC to take pressure of him and help him out and do u think Sc beats the Ducks what is your prediction?
Thanks Jose. I do think it's possible that Kiffin looks to bring in an offensive coordinator, the dual roles are very tough to handle. If he was doing extremely well in both it wouldn't be an issue but it's obvious that it isn't easy to do. As far as a prediction, I respect the Ducks and how well they are playing but I will stick with the Trojans pulling it out. The program needs this one and I think these players get it done.
The season is 2/3 of the way over and we are still so undisciplined Garry. Where is the accountability? There's only one main thing that motivates a player and that's playing time. It's time to start benching some guys for the excessive bonehead plays/personal fouls. Clearly making them run after practice as punishment isn't working!
It's one of the more frustrating parts of this season and it just doesn't make sense. This team has such great leadership and you would think those players would be able to gain control of the situation. It's a shame that it has had such a negative impact on what could have been a special year.
Whats the word on max redfield? Do you think he sticks?
Right now he's calling himself a soft commitment to USC. I think he sticks in the end because of his friendship with other commits like Su'a Cravens and the fact that he has two former teammates already on the SC roster in Madden and Pinner.
i know its premature to be talking about replacing lane kiffin,i mean if we knew 3 years ago half way thru the sanctions we'd still be a top 25 team i think everyone would have been happy. But if lane kiffin had to go,who outside of del rio could u see as suitable replacements.also what coaches do you think he can hire to run the offense as he steps away net year to help his dad on defense.
I respect your question but right now Lane Kiffin is the coach of the Trojans and he's getting ready for a huge game on Saturday. If the time comes at some point down the road to make other plans, we can certainly discuss names then.
Having technical issues so we are going to have to end the chat early today. Apologize and we'll see you again next week.
