Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Auto update on, ringing of casino slots out of my head and ready to spend the next hour chatting with you live from Las Vegas. I've been here the past four days for the SEMA and Apex Shows where Brad Keselowski, Danica Patrick, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer and a few other NASCAR stars have been as well. What's on your mind?

Miller (UT)

Mermaids on Fremont Street has really strong drinks for cheap. FYI

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

I am supposed to be here to answer questions, not be distracted. I'm off the rest of the day after this, so I may swim over there.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, hope you're enjoying Las Vegas. Hard to believe 3 to go and first semester of grad school almost done. Anyways I got few q's for you:1) What was the real reason Kenseth left for JGR? Neglection, money, something else?2) Did Penske go after Rodney Childers for JoLo's CC next yr?3)Any idea on Penske's NW plans? 2 or 3 cars and how much they want to run Blaney besides FT in trucks? Thanks buddy!

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Vegas has been fun, particularly the people watching on Halloween night. For your questions, 1. Kenseth left because he saw more opportunity at JGR sponsorship wise and potentially competition wise. Check out a column I wrote on Kenseth about three weeks ago. Very revealing. 2. Hadn't heard on Childers. Penske is pretty loyal on hiring from within. so not sure that one happened. 3. Looks like Hornish will drive a full NW season with a partial ride for a second car probably between Keselowski and another driver.

matt (tennessee)

Hey Newt, any word on Monster Energy returning to KBM next year?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Nothing suggests they won't be.

luke (mississippi)

Do you think one of the reasons Kyle would join SHR is because he could learn from Tony on how to be a driver/owner

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

No. It would be strictly because that would give him a chance to compete at a high level.

neil (hartford)

Everyone talks about the chasers having their own system (1-12) but it would be worse than what we have now 1)Jimmie Johnson2)Brad K ---2 3)Clint Bowyer--17 4)Kasey Kahne---23It would be harder to make up points in this case

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

I respectfully disagree. Let's say Jimmie had an 11-point lead going into the final race, he finished last among the 12 Chase drivers and Brad K finished first. Brad K could win the title. Might be gimmicky, but would help maintain suspense.

Boston for 15 (Boston, MA)

What would happen if Danica Patwreck sparked a crash that took out Jimmy or Brad this week?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Cute on the last name. I suspect Twitter and our comment sections would go crazy. I also suspect she'll be very cautious.

TJ (Mn)

Any chance Kenseth gets a race in the 20 this year or Joey gets a race in the 22 yet this year?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

Nope. Not in the cards.

Mike (Mn)

Whose your favorites in the sprint cars and late models at the world finals this weekend?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Honestly, I haven't given it enough thought to give you a great answer. Should be fun to watch, though.

Mike (SC)

How many drinks did you have at the JJ book signing? We saw you drinking in the film clip. Does your doctor approve?

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

If you are referring to the art gallery there was a glass of red wine. It seemed like the artsy thing to do. And yes, doctors approve. Heart pumping strong. Ran four miles before getting on this chat.

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

Hi Newt, were you disappointed in Dale whining about getting spun out with 10 to go when Rowdy never went running his mouth after #2 dumped him on the last lap at the Glen?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Not really. He was more disappointed he gave up a good finish.

c'mon (man)

Hi Newt, love your reporting/writting, anyways does your colleague Marty Smith feel that he's to good for this chats.

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Thanks, and not at all on Marty. He stays busy on the TV side mostly. Plus he has three young kids. He loves to chat, and is very active on Twitter. If you have questions for him I'm sure he'll answer there. If he had more time I'm sure he'd be here more.

Turk (Mich.)

Do you think Dale Junebug needs to show more maturity after a racing deal instead of acting like he's the only driver in history to have been disappointed by getting spun out late in a race?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

You guys aren't going to drag me into this. I had no problem with what Earnhardt said after the race.

Jake (Irving, TX)

Hi Newt, if #2 loses the championship to #48 do you expect the traditional "hangover" and for #2 to go winless and miss the chase like Carl Edwards did?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Funny you ask. When I asked Brad yesterday if he allowed himself to think of being back in Vegas in a month as the champion, he said he had more thoughts about not wanting to be No. 2 because of what that has brought past runner-ups. I believe even if he is the runner-up, he'll be the exception to that rule.

Ron (Shreve)

Why do you write that BradK has worse numbers at certain tracks when BradK keeps proving writers who use that wrong? BradK had bad numbers at Dover and he beat Johnson. He just put up a career best at Martinsville. His 36th at Texas was due to a parts failure that he hasn't had in a long time.

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Believe I have mentioned that he keeps improving on his numbers when listing the numbers. Stats are part of what we do. They're not meant to put a driver or athlete down.

Nate Collett (Shaftsbury, Vermont)

Obviously Jimmie has a statistical advantage at Texas and Phoenix. But Brad has seemingly shut out those stats this year with good, consistent finishes at his worst tracks. What's your gut feeling on who will have the advantage heading to Homestead?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Agree, Brad has done a remarkable job on improving his finishes at tracks where he has struggled. I still give the edge to Johnson.

Laura (Newport Beach, Ca)

With Denny winning the M'ville truck race for KBM and Rowdy running really strong in the NW #54 do you expect Kyle Busch Motorsports to be a dominant team in both series next season?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I thought KBS would dominate in the NW series this year and was proved wrong, so I'll refrain from predicting.

Joe (VA)

You picked Logano to make the chase. He is 18th and that isn't even his career best.

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Hey, can't win them all. I also picked Kyle Busch to make the Chase and contend for a title. Kind of like my fantasy football league this year.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Hi David, would you say the Danica-Gibson or Newman-Borland will be the most successful team at SHR next season?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Newman-Borland.

Nate Collett (Shaftsbury, Vermont)

What percent chance would you give Clint on making a last gasp run at the title?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

8 percent. Sorry, but I believe he's too far back unless the 2 and 48 pile each other up.

Mike (Rochester, NY)

Did I see you dressed as Joey Logano last night?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Funny guy. But I did see a lot of interesting costumes in Vegas last night. Great people watching.

Ron (Smithville)

When Roush got all of his cars in the Chase NASCAR changed the rules so do you expect more changes to keep Hendricks from getting all 4 cars in the chase again next year?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Nope. The change was made to limit teams to four cars so Hendrick, Roush and other powerhouse organizations wouldn't keep expanding and control the sport. It wasn't directed to keep Roush intact as much as it was to make sure others didn't expand so there would be only a handful of organizations in the series.

Ron (Smithville)

Do you rate the 2013 Super Team of Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin to be the strongest driver line up in the history of NASCAR?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Wouldn't go that far at all. But I do think it potentially is the strongest in NASCSAR next year. JGR just needs to find a way to stop having quality control issues as Hamlin had last week and others have had the past few year to derail championship hopes.

Andrew (Kentucky)

How impressed were you with the class Rowdy showed by not dumping Jimmie at Martinsville like #2 did to Kyle at Watkins Glen?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Very. But Kyle said before the Chase he didn't want to be a factor in deciding who won by doing something that would impact the playoff. He treated Johnson just how he would expect to be treated if he were running for a title.

Mike (Reed)

Will UPS be a sponsor for Edwards or any other driver next year?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Not sure if the deal for this year was multi-year or a single year without looking it up.

Sam (UT)

So what are your predictions for this weekend? JJ gain points? Win? Will brad have texas problems llike before?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Well, Johnson was second at Texas in the spring, so I look for him to be strong as usual. Also look for Brad to be a factor as he has throughout the Chase. I can see them being very close on the track keeping an eye on each other. Brad's biggest issue is qualifying better. Not sure how long he can keep coming from deep in the field.

Jay (GA)

Do you think that reuniting Newman and Borland will produce better results?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

They did win eight races together one season, and have a pretty strong relationship. They also think more alike than Newman does with Tony Gibson, who is more old school. Borland and Newman both think like engineers that they are.

Busch Brothers Nation (Global)

Newt, do you think we Busch Brothers fans are wrong to blame #2 for ruining Kyle's season by intentionally wrecking him at Watkins Glen to keep Rowdy out of the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

No. There are plenty of other instances where had things gone a different way Busch would be in the Chase.

Ryan (NC)

Dave do u agree with spencer last thursday that the driver who wins the all star race should get 2 bonus pts towards the chase nd be guarnteed a spot in the chase no matter where he finishes in pts?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

I could go along with two bonus points. Might make drivers even more aggressive. But guaranteed a spot in the Chase? Hardly.

Nate Collett (Vermont)

Who's your top 5 this weekend? And a darkhorse

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

Johnson, Kyle Busch, Kenseth, Gordon, Biffle. Darkhorse: Almirola. He's been on a small roll of late.

Rocco (PA)

What can Rowdy, Dave and the #18 guys take away from Kyle's best Chase ever?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

That you need to be in the Chase for it to count.

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

And that there is no reason to break them up.

SteveS (Gainesville, FL)

So what did you see last night?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Finally, somebody had the guts to ask. Not sure I have the guts to answer. Did see a guy in a complete NY Jets Tim Tebow uniform. Check out my photo on Twitter (@Dnewtonespn). Saw a lot of women dressed in outfits they normally don't wear out of the house. Really oool headless zombie that somebody put a lot of efforr into. In fact, there were a lot of zombies in general. Had a great spot in the Wynn where I parked for about three hours and took in the sights.

Trig (CA)

With the crew chief revolving door at RCR do you think Richard needs to finally admit that the problem is the drivers?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Not really. And I don't believe it's as much to do with the crew chiefs as it had to do with losing competition director Scott Miller to MWR.

Nate Collett (Vermont)

Who ya got? LSU or Alabama?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Have to go with Bama, but I'm a little wary of LSU putting it all together for at least one game at home. A night game at Death Valley can be pretty intimidating for the best team.

TG (PA)

While you were in Vegas, did Ernie go trick or treating back home without you? Concerned about your health, did you need heart surgery? Stay well.

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

No on Ernie, but he did dress as Cam Newton for a dog breast cancer awareness show last weekend. As for health, had stints put in two of my three major arteries and all is well now. Thanks.

Camview (Florida)

Will the great Robby Gordon be racing at Daytona and what manufacture cars will RGR be running?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Haven't heard for sure on Robby at Daytona.

Boston for 15 (Boston, MA)

So if Danicrash is going to race to be cautious, why even race? What is she learning?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

I meant she'll be cautious when racing around Jimmie and Brad K. Her goal is to learn, and finishing a race is the best way. I didn't mean to suggest she was going to ride around the bottom of the track and be happy with just getting around.

Greg (La)

How much testing will the drivers b doin in the new cars in the off season

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Sure a lot. NASCAR will allow four tests at sanctioned tracks in addition to Daytona, so you'll probably see a lot of teams test at Vegas. Sure there'll be a lot at non-sanctioned tracks as well.

Anna (Denver)

Enjoyed your article on BradK.and yes,I think he's good for the sport,he is still humble, down to earth..don't you think, like any other sport, people get tired of the same team winning?...nothing against the 48..I just think if Brad won..it would be water cooler chat long past seasons end...

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Thanks and totally agree.

Scott (Charlotte)

Hey Newt, have you heard the rumour that Webster dictionary is going to use Indycar as their example for the word "dumb"

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Everyone wants to be a comic.

Jay (GA)

Where are the rumors of Ky. Busch to SHR coming from? JGR is stronger, don't you think? and would Busch replace Newman, or become a 4-car team, if this comes to fruition?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

The rumor surfaced in part because Kyle hasn't gotten an extension done in advance of next year yet as JGR would like. I really believe he'll be back at JGR, though. I'm sure he does't want to deal with these rumors and let it become a distraction next year.

randy (indiana)

do you see RPM staying long term at Ford or will they look to Chevy for 2014 ? or if Dodge returns in 2014 look to go there ?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Ford's been good to them, but in this ever changing climate it's hard to predict beyond next year.

Trent (Miss.)

Isn't the best way for NASCAR to end the #48 Chad dominance in the Chase to do a radical switch in tracks like ending at Daytona and having road course races?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

That would be a good start. I believe you'll see a change in the Chase tracks in 2014. But remember, Johnson is pretty good everywhere. He's just had a bad run at plate tracks lately.

randy (indiana)

Richard Petty said after the Ford deal was announced that they (RPM) had to convence Ford RPM was ok and who owned what ? what did the King mean when he said this.

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

I wasn't there when he said that. Petty has told me that he is good on sponsorship and money for 2013. That is all I can tell you.

Support Kurt Busch (Global)

David, do you know if Harvick called Kurt to appologize for wrecking out @FR78Racing while Kurt was running in 4th at Martinsville?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

That I would doubt, but I don't know for sure.

Nate Collett (Vermont)

Any word on any young guns who might try to make a few races next year? (i.e Allgaier, Annett, Whitt, etc) Not start and park either

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Nothing I've heard yet. Not a lot of spots for them to drive.

Jason (Florida)

Do you think the reason #14 is having such a bad Chase is because SHR isn't ready to run a 3 team operation plus all the Danica distractions?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Nope. Just not having a great Chase. It happens.

Ross (Shawshank)

Newt,When Rowdy wins this weekend - and he will - He will celebrate Gangnam Style. Might as well place your bet since you're in Vegas

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Wouldn't surprise me if he won there, either.

Cameron (Palo Alto, CA)

Did you get a chance to watch Tanner Foust dominate the field on Tuesday night? Good Champion for the series I think. Give the craps table a hello for me Newt. Enjoy Vegas!

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

I did. Fun series. I'm not much into crap tables. I'm more into people watching.

Nate Collett (Vermont)

Any word on Junior's sponsorship next year? He's losing a few races from PepsiCo.. obviously sponsorship isn't an issue with him, but I'd like to know what I'm looking for next year. lol

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Nothing yet, but he assures there are plenty of solid candiates. Sure we'll see a big announcement soon.

Mike (Rochester, NY)

Picks for this weekends race?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Johnson, Kyle Busch, Gordon, Biffle, Kenseth.

Ryan (WI)

If this "new" car uses the same chassis as the other, isn't like putting lip stick on a pig ,or brick in these case? Thanks,

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

Not quite. It will be 100 pounds lighter and they are playing with other areas to make the cars less aero dependent, hopefully to encourage more passing.

Ben (SC)

As a RCR fan I'm so disgusted with that whole team but especially Harvick and Burton. Do you think Richard is gonna make some wholesale driver changes and fire both of them?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

He's already made some changes with crew chiefs and a competition director. Burton has said next year is key for his future, so he knows it's make or break. Harvick is in a contract year in 2013, so that'll be interesting, but he's still one of the top drivers in the garage. He did finish third each of the past two seasons.

Professor Luri (FL)

Any indication if Gilles will rotate out or be re-assigned

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

He sounded committed.

randy (indiana)

why didnt the media mention that Almirola had the car to beat at Kansas or at least challenge the 48 team for the win ? most said if the 49 hadnt had issues they wouldve won.

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

I didn't cover that race, but as Almirola told me after last week's race he had the fastest car at Kansas and could have won. Still would have gone with 48 over him.

Nate Collett (Vermont)

Likelihood that a non chaser wins a race before the end of the year?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Sunday might be best bet,and I'd look at Kyle Busch or Carl Edwards. Both are good at Texas.

Jim (Rochester, NY)

Will Rowdy lose his job next year? After all he will only be the 3rd best Sprint Cup driver at JGR.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

JGR wants to sign him long term.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

What will be the difference that Danica will have to ajust to from Zippy to Tony Gibson?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Not as much as you think. Gibson is more like what Danica was used to with Eury Jr., so it should be seamless. I predict Gibson will be great for her.

Danica Fan (AZ)

If fans don't like Danica why don't they bash her team owners, Dale and Tony Stewert?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Well, there is that option.

Thomas (NC)

Do you agree with this HMS driver rating: 48 1st team, 5 second team, 24 third stringer and 88 bench warmer?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

I see 48 first, 24 second and then pick 'em between 5 and 88.

Hyde (Houston, TX)

Hi Newt, how are drivers discovered in NASCAR? Do teams have scouts that go to tracks around the country or is it all word of mouth and results driven ?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Lot of word of mouth, then they go out and watch them race. There's not a true scouting team like the NFL and other sports because there isn't the turnover you see in those sports every year.

Saul (San Diego)

Mr. Newton, do you have a NASCAR book you would recommend for Christmas stockings?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Haven't really seen a good one lately. Wish I could help more. Try Google.

Jay (GA)

Who will be better next year Logano or Kenseth?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Kenseth. Get real.

James (Houston)

Haven't heard anything regarding who's in the 51 car in Texas. Seems via Twitter that it's AJ? Is he in the car the rest of the year?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Regan Smith has the final two races, and AJ has Texas.

Larry (NC)

Tell Boston for 15 that according to Zippy, Danica learns more in a day than Logano did in a year.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

But you could say Danica has more to learn in a day that Logano.

J (NY)

Is VIckers to JGR Nationwide a done deal and just hasn't been announced yet?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

From what I'm told, it will happen.

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

That's it for me. Have to pack and get ready for the red-eye back to Charlotte tonight. As usual, thanks for the questions. Enjoy the Texas race.
