Chat with Pat Yasinskas

Ray (Orlando )

Is David Gettis getting activated? Think Carolina could really use him to stretch the field

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:56 PM)

Sounds very possible. Rivera just said LaFell is doubtful.

Ken (ny) [via mobile]

Pat I hope your joking when you said Carolina would have a slight edge over Alabama. After watching every snap from both teams Carolina would destroy Alabama. Remember the panthers should have beat the best two teams in the NFC. So being an nfcs blogger and actually thinking Alabama would have a chance makes me question if you even watch the games or if you instead just look at the box score

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:57 PM)

Think it's fairly obvious I was just having fun. No college team could beat an NFL team.

Carson (Macon, Ga)

Looking at the remaining schedule for the Falcons, what is your best guess for their regular season record? Along with that, do you feel they have a good chance at clitching the #1?

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:58 PM)

Guessing around 14-2 and think that's pretty realistic. That would definitely give them strong shot at No. 1 seed.

nick (goldsboro,nc)

what do you think about the panthers change from spread running offense? i was happy to see it

Pat Yasinskas
  (12:59 PM)

Very happy to see it. Although they didn't have great success with running game against Chicago. I think it will be a good thing going forward.

Matt (tupelo) [via mobile]

What happen to bunkley all we heard from the "experts" was a great signing especially for the run defense?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:00 PM)

Apparently, Saints aren't feeling so great about that one. The rookie is now starting ahead of him.

Tyler (Athens,Ga)

Pat Why don't the Falcons just use Jacquizz Rodgers all the time? He is a much more exciting, hard runner than Michael Turner.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:01 PM)

Don't think you want to see either one all the time. They've got two different styles and, in theory, should complement each other.

David (Manhattan)

Prediction Time: When it is all said and done, who will have more rings, Brees or Ryan?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:03 PM)

Way to early to go there. At this point, I'll just say Brees leads with one and that may end up being all he gets. We'll wait and see what happens with Ryan.

Ray (Orlando)

Do you think Carolina misses Shockey, more so on the field as cam's security blanket?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:04 PM)

Don't think that's the problem.

BuccoBruce (Chicago)

Pat, how bad will it hurt Doug Martins running game, now that Carl Nicks is out.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:05 PM)

Bound to hurt some because Nicks was dominant and Martin's stats when running behind him were impressive. Bucs are really going to have to get O-line coached up. They're without two quality guards and have switched guys at several other positions already.

David (Manhattan)

Which coach in the division is furthest from the hot seat?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

Think it's safe to say Mike Smith. But, then again, only one really on the hot seat is Rivera.

Joshua (Atlanta)

Pat with Weatherspoon out for the Falcons game this Sunday night.Which will hurt more? The Falcons run defense or the Falcons pass defense concerning Jason Witten.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:07 PM)

I worry a little more about dealing with Witten.

Jerry Mitchell (NY)

fantasywise, would you trade Julio Jones for Gronk?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

No guarantees, but, yes, I'd do it. I think Julio is poised for a big second half of the season.

nick (nc)

i feel Carolina isnt using olsen as much as they should what do u think?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:08 PM)

I'm with you. He's a very good TE and I think they could get more out of him.

AJ (Oakland)

Did the Bucs get enough in return for the Talib trade. Despite his issues, he is worth more than a 4th rounder right?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:09 PM)

Be very happy with that. I think that's a good deal for Bucs. Alternative was letting him finish season, letting him walk as a free agent and get nothing in return.

BuccoBruce (Chicago)

Pat, Im I standing alone to think that Talib should have been let go in the offseason? I mean they are trying to make a push for a wild card spot, why do it at this point. Its not like our secondery is top notch.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:10 PM)

See previous answer: You can get something for him now and you wouldn't get anything later.

David (Manhattan)

Is the year Matt Ryan wins his first playoff game (hopefully this year) the same year Matt Ryan wins his first ring?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:11 PM)

Looks very possible at this point. Still a long way to go. We'll see.

Yone (New Orleans)

The Saint's Defense is loaded with former 1st and 2nd round draft picks yet the unit as a whole is horrendous. Do these guys just fail to meet individual expectations or is it more the coaches fault

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:12 PM)

In at least some of those cases, those guys were drafted to play Greg Williams' defense, which is a very different style from Spagnuolo's.

AJ (Oakland)

What do the Bucs have to do to beat Oakland? Cross country travel can wear a team out.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:13 PM)

Play same way they did in Minnesota. Balance Doug Martin and the passing game and play aggressive defense. Not easy going cross country, but they are playing the Raiders.

Mitch (NC)

If Carolina's new (old) offense proves successful now that they have had two games to actually work on it, could it save Chud or Rivera's job? Or do they get fired for wasting a quarter of the season on the spread offense?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

Think they've got a chance to stay, but only if they win some games and show consistent improvement down the stretch.

Ray (Orlando)

We're you surprised that Deangelo Williams wasn't traded?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:14 PM)

No, that the contract made it difficult on both sides.

AJ (Oakland)

Freeman seems better than last year, but still isn't where we thought he's be after his breakout season a few years ago. What's holding him back?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:16 PM)

Let's wait a bit on that. He seems to be progressing, but it's still a new offense and coaching staff that he's getting used to.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Pat, yesterday I looked at the Falcons' remaining schedule for this season, and it did not look very difficult to me. Which of their remaining games do you think will be the most difficult for the Falcons to win?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:17 PM)

Obviously, the Giants game is the big one. But, even how things have played out this year, I think the two Saints games could be interesting. The two teams don't like each other and Saints will come to play in those games.

AJ (Oakland)

What do the Bucs players think of Sciano's play to the whistle college-like mentality? I think it's great

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:19 PM)

I think as long as they're winning -- or showing progress like they are now -- they'll be fine with his style.

AJ (Oakland)

Does Carolina get your vote for biggest disappointment? Expectations were so high.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:20 PM)

Yeah, I'd say so. At least with the Saints, you can understand why they haven't had the season they'd like.

AJ (Oakland)

ATL is once again having a great regular season. Do you see any major holes on the team that could once again lead to an early playoff exit?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:21 PM)

I think this is a different -- and better team -- due to the two new coordinators.

JP ((Formerly of) Hoboken,NJ)

Thanks for the break from Hurricane life....Tony G has had less impact the last few games compared with the beginning of the season...was the start of the season a fluke, or will he continue to have a strong presence?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:22 PM)

Think he'll be fine. Think defenses will just continue to go back and forth between the hot hands. If Roddy and Julio dominate, they'll start leaving Tony open again.

Adam (Asheville)

If Rivera loses his job could you see Carolina going after the Oregon Duck's coach Chip Kelly? Apparently he's a top if not *the* top head coaching prospect this year.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:23 PM)

Well, he already turned down one NFC South job.

Joshua (Colorado Springs)

Can we get some "Comeback Player of the Year" consideration for Sam Baker? O-Lineman need the love too.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:24 PM)

He definitely deserves praise, but I think that trophy already has been shipped to Peyton Manning's house.

Not AJ (Not Oakland)

AJ (Oakland)ATL is once again having a great regular season. Do you see any major holes on the team that could once again lead to an early playoff exit?I'll answer that......Keeping Weatherspoon healthy. If he is not 100%, I see that as a hole.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

Yep, but I think this might be just a one-game injury.

David (Manhattan)

What position will the falcons draft with the 32nd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:25 PM)

We'll deal with that in the spring, but right now I'd say DE or RB.

eric wright (one buc place)

hey pat, i got a fat contract, but messed up am i next out of town?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:26 PM)

I'll have to look, but pretty sure your contract is guaranteed for two years, so that may keep you in town.

Matt Riddle (Atlanta, Ga)

Hey Pat, Happy Holidays! What do you think is the overlying reason that the national media continues to disregard the success of the Falcons? I know they haven't won a playoff, but the criticism I have seen, especially after last week's blowout in Philly, is just unjustified. I know you feel the same way but I was wondering what exactly you think is going through these analysts minds??

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:27 PM)

Again, not what I think and you're asking me to read minds of others -- but I'd guess it's simply because Falcons haven't been able to win in postseason in recent years

Chris (NC)

What was the determining factor to choose Stewart over Williams in Car? Do you think Stewart will be great or merely OK as he has been for quite some time now.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:28 PM)

Think that once Hurney was out, Rivera went with the guy he liked. While Hurney was there, I think there was at least some pressure to play the guy with the bigger contract.

Jason (Birmingham)

Any word on how the Bucs are going to shuffle the O-line after the injury to Nicks?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:29 PM)

They won't announce it until Sunday when they line up for first play. But choices are pretty limited.

Ben (Atlanta GA)

Hey Pat - you know the Big Cat well enough from your Charlotte days, what do you think he will do about Rivera after this season? It didnt sound as if he wanted to hire him in the first place.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

I suspect he will clean house. He's very frustrated by the losing and think he'll do something dramatic to try to turn it around.

Will (NO)

Why is every falcons fan complaining about not getting respect in the media. WHO CARES WHAT THEY THINK!! YOU ARE WINNING GAMES, AND THE # 1 TEAM IN THE NFL!! GET OVER IT!!!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:30 PM)

On the whole "respect" issue, very well said, Will.

Dessert in the Desert (AZ)

Going back your top 25 list at the start of the season; Do you still think Cam is a better QB than Ryan?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:31 PM)

Umm, no.

TJ (Canada)

Would you say the DeCoud and Moore are the two most underrated safeties in the league?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

Would have to be at least close to it.

JM (Charlotte)

Gotta agree with Will (NO)... Falcons have wins, what else matters?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:32 PM)

All that matters.

redzone jones (NY)

With the D-line not getting after the passer effectively and Nicks going down for season. Doesn't trading away their best corner make the Bucs look like they're throwing in the towel?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Think you've got to look at bigger picture on that one.

Joshua (Colorado Springs)

I think that the best moves Atlanta made are the ones that they didn't make. No Mario Williams and Nnamdi appears to be genius moves. In Thomas we trust.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:33 PM)

Be honest -- where you saying that back in the spring???

Rich (South)

I think AP may have some say in Comeback Player of the Year Pat. Peyton took a lot more time off and doesn't play as physically challenging position as AP.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:34 PM)

Not disagreeing with you. But the reality is he's Peyton Manning. And he's a QB. He'll win the award.

Tom (ATL)

As a Falcons fan, I also agree with Will and I believe Matt Ryan, Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff do as well. Dona??t think they care what analysts say as long as we are coming away with wins.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:35 PM)

I can assure you Smith, Ryan and Dimitroff aren't sitting around watching what people say or don't say about them on tv. Think the whole respect thing matters just to fans.

Joshua (Colorado Springs)

No... no I wasn't saying that back in the spring... but I will NEVER doubt Thomas Dimitroff again. EVER.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

Cool. Appreciate your honesty.

redzone jones (NY)

Do you think the Bucs should've traded Blount?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:36 PM)

Not sure they even got any offers.

Matt Riddle (Atlanta, Ga)

Valid arguements on winning is all the matters- but it amazes me that even after last week and starting 7-0 I've seen nearly ever NFL columnist or analyst has taken every opportunity to discount their success. Again- agree that winning is what matters

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:38 PM)

Whatever doubts I had about them diminished quite a bit Sunday.

tom (ma)

are you worried abou the falcons losing steam at the end of the year? they need to stay in a groove and not rest for the playoffs? what about their fantasy players for weeks 14-16?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:39 PM)

Think back a few years on when Saints were 13-0. They rested some guys and lost last three regular-season games. But they were healthy and rested and won the Super Bowl.

CC (Atlanta)

I really thought the Falcons might shock us by acquiring a good RB yesterday. Can you imagine this offense with a Steven Jackson type?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:40 PM)

I thought there was at least a chance of them doing something at RB. Maybe not the Jackson level, but thought they might bring in someone. Obviously, they didn't, so it's Turner, Rodgers and Snelling or bust for the rest of this year.

Fan since 74 (216)

As a long time fan, seeing the Falcons undefeated this late in the seasons is amazing.....However, I don't feel like the city is going crazy like it wold have 20 years ago....Even 10 years ago.....I feel the current ownership, general manager and coaching staff have created an air of "this is where we should be every year"......Agree?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:42 PM)

I think there is some truth to that "air". However, just walking into the Georgia Dome this year, I've noticed a more festive atmosphere this year. Used to see a lot of jerseys from Falcons of the past. Now, it's all Ryan and Julio.

Rich (South)

Is Jonathan Stewart healthy? How about Jimmy Graham?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:43 PM)

Will get you injury reports after the chat.

JM (Charlotte)

Assuming Rivera is gone, the Panthers have gone the route of the well established coach and lost, and also the up-and-comer and lost. Which way will they go this time?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Great question and I don't know the answer to that. It's been very, very quiet out of the biggest office in Bank of America Stadium.

MIKE (GREENSBORO)

PAT, (I EMAILED YOU ON THIS) WHY DONT THE PANTHERS TAKE MORE CHANCES? 4TH AND 5 INCHES AND THEY PUNT IN CHICAGO! WHY NOT RUN A FAKE? WHAT IS THERE TO LOSE?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:44 PM)

Agree, at this point, there's nothing to lose.

Ben (Atlanta GA)

Do you think Kuechly has supplanted Beason permanently at MLB?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:45 PM)

My guess is yes, but it's going to be up to new GM and whoever is coaching that team next year.

Justin (Minneapolis)

Why is Blount such a bad goal line back?with his size he should be able to punch it in at the goal line 9 outta 10 times

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:46 PM)

Think vision might have something to do with it.

collin (lakeland, fl)

Is Cam Newton a bust if he doesn't turn it around this year?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

No, too early to say that.

CC (Atlanta)

What about Gruden to Carolina? You know he'd love to have Newton as a toy.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

Would certainly be interesting, if that's what Gruden wants to do.

I have a scoop for you! (Covert)

Andy Reid will be the next coach for the Panthers.....Print it!

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:47 PM)

That one might not be bad for Cam either.

Ben (St. Louis, MO)

Do you know the name of the program that Fantasy Focus used to promote that allows people to predict what would have to occur for teams to get into their leagues playoffs?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:48 PM)

No, but I do know we run something like that on our site later in the season. Once we started, I'll let you know on the blog.

Karthik (San Jose)

Do you think Mason Foster will get Pro Bowl consideration if he continues to play at this level? He's near the top of the league in tackles and makes numerous plays in the backfield

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:49 PM)

Possibly. Know he's getting heavy consideration for All-NFC South midseason team that will run next week.

Tom (ATL)

Thought I heard talk about Sean Peyton to Dallas next year. Do you know if that's possible?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:51 PM)

I know that's making rounds. But sincerely doubt Benson would let him out of his contract. And no idea if Payton actually would want to do that.

Randy (CT)

Hey Pat!! Are we really that bad off with Spoon down or can we manufacture solid fill in (assuming Edwards can wake up)

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:52 PM)

Well, not having Spoon certainly doesn't help you. But you might be able to get by one game without him.

BuccoBruce (Chicago)

Pat do you see Holmgrem as a possiblity for Carolina if Rivera is gone? or Bill Cowher?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Think Richardson would have to at least consider them, if they want to coach again. But, again, he had a bad experience with Seifert, so he might not want to go that route.

CB (Charleston, SC)

Do you like what you've seen out of Dunta so far? He seems to be playing much better this year, I always wondered if BVG's system was a terrible fit for him.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:54 PM)

Yes, he's been much, much better this year.

Ray (Orlando)

To get back to the comeback player of the year, Thomas Davis needs some votes. Amazing how a guy with basically one knee is making the plays he has this season

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:55 PM)

Agree, Thomas deserves praise for coming back like he has. But doubt he'll win the award.

Me again (Ga Dome)

See you in the Dome Sunday night?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

I'm planning on heading that way.

Don (KS)

Would like to see Sidbury, Matthews, and Mossiquoi get more playing time, so that they will be ready for playoffs.

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:56 PM)

Get your point, but I don't think coaching staff feels any of those guys are at a point where they're ready to contribute.

Adam (Asheville)

What do you think Luke Kuechly's chances of winning defensive rookie of the year are at this point?

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:58 PM)

Slim. When you're team isn't winning, it's tough to win awards. Barron and David in Tampa would be ahead of him right now and I'm sure there are others around the rest of the league.

Randy (CT)

Am I the only one who doesn't mind Snelling at all? Seems to me he is much more athletic than people appreciate

Pat Yasinskas
  (1:58 PM)

He has his moments, but not sure you'd want to see him as a steady diet.

CC (Atlanta)

Is Konz getting another start vs Dallas?

Pat Yasinskas
  (2:00 PM)

That would be my guess. He did pretty well in his first start and I think the plan was, once they got him in the lineup, to keep going with him.All right, our time is up. Thanks to all for stopping by. Have a great weekend.
