Well, it looked like it would be a nice quiet chat where we could lift a dainty pinky whilst sipping our Earl Gray...then the UFC 153 reports come back. Man, the Americans were smuggling everything they could down to Brazil. Bonnar popped for steroids (again), and Herman for marijuana (perhaps tellingly). Crazy. What make of it? Let's get this thing rolling....
hey chuck, liked the article you did on dana white's big promises. what happens first, then -- rousey in the ufc, or a superfight between jones/silva?
Well, Ross, I guess I'd go with Rousey in the UFC. That's on the hunch that Strikeforce will be dissolved, and the UFC will snap up the vital pieces. Jones/Silva, it would need to happen before too long, but if you look at the UFC's plans, it doesn't seem likely.
WHATS YOUR THOUGHTS ON STEPHAN BONNAR TESTING POSITIVE FOR ANABOLIC STERIOD @ UFC 153, HOW DOES THIS CHANGE HIS IMAGE IN THE SPORT?
Well, it's the second time he's been popped, so the asterisk was always with him. Not sure how much it'll change the perception of him, but it's sad. The UFC really heaps a lot of praise on him for the Griffin fight (the Catalyst for Success), and then he goes out on a down note. Too bad.
Getting busted for roids does_____ for Bonnars legacy.
Just makes him a little bit more of a punchline, but ultimately, doubt it'll prevent him from appearing on television as an analyst.
Thanks for the Friday chat, Chucky. Not trying to be facetious, but Kyle Kingsbury, if he retires, will be remembered for _______________.
Lot of fill in the blank type of questions out of the gate. Kingsbury? Well, I'll remember that Maldonado fight. It was pretty back and forth. Otherwise, that he was a football guy who gave it a go.
Bonnar man, come on! The good will you walked around with, you just blew that up!
Sad, but true.
Why no love for Cain in the rematch? How do you see that fight going down?
Ty, the thing is, I don't see the fight going down. Not to the ground. And therefore I still think JDS holds court and keeps his belt. His stand-up is light years in front of Velasquez's, and he'll keep it on the feet.
Who's next for Stefan Struve? Also who's next for Bigfoot Silva?
I was thinking they might lock him up with Mark Hunt. But now he's calling out Overeem. Might as well aim at the fences.
You seem to be having auto update problems again.
I turned the auto on....not sure what's up.
Will you be watching the first World Series of fighting Card this weekend?
Yeah, I'll be checking it out. Some good fights on there. Looking forward to seeing Spong. Can't go wrong with Torres, either.
Bigger fight in your opinion: Aldo/Edgar or Sonnen/Jones?
Bigger in terms of PPV, probably Sonnen/Jones. For as big of a fight as Aldo/Edgar is, people gravitate more towards the bigger guys.
Give me your NFL lock this week, Chuck.
Love the Broncos. I am a fan, yes, but your knuckles won't be white on this one. Bet the Broncos.
Who is the most complete fighter in the UFC? Not necessarily the best P4P, but the one with the fewest holes? GSP?
Probably GSP. Guy has it all. Just needs to stay out of the way of big punches.
TUF Brazil with Werdum and Big Nog. You watching?
Probably not. I haven't been able to watch as regularly as I once did. Haven't seen any of the current season.
What's Chuck Liddell doing with his golden years?
Why, he's in the ambassador seat with the UFC. Smile and wave for the jumbotron at live events, PR tours, plus arriving as a showpiece when the UFC needs to make a good impression in a new market.
Hey Chuck. What do you think the odds are that GSP fight Silva next assuming he gets by Condit? Is this 100% if he wins or only if its impressive?
I would assume if GSP gets by Condit, and does so impressively, that the UFC will make the Silva fight. That's what they've been leaning towards, and at last the thing could be made.
If the UFC does make Nick Diaz against Josh Koscheck, who do you favor in that fight? Much as I hate to admit it, I like Koscheck and his wrestling.
I remember when the UFC first talked about matching those guys back at UFC 137, and thinking "that might be a tough match-up for Diaz." Truth is, Koscheck has gotten a little flashier in the stand-up too. If he elected to stand and trade with Diaz, they might need to call in a ballistic expert to determine exactly what happened to Koscheck.
Whats wrong with my questions? Can i get a question answered?
Sure, fire away. I am grabbing them as quick as I can.
What you think of a future fight between Leben and Maldanado?
I went down and grabbed one. I am all for it. Both guys have zombie blood. Seems like the more you punch away at their chins, the more they come staggering forward on those toddler legs throwing bombs. Book it. BUT, they'd have to do it at a catchweight.
Love Hendo, but I don't want to see him wait to fight JJ... Who would you like to see him before that?
I would love to see a play back of Hendo/Anderson Silva, but that seems like a long shot now. I guess the Machida/Hendo fight has some appeal.
Koscheck-Diaz makes no sense ... Koscheck isn't getting a title shot soon. Fitch-Diaz would, though. Or Ellenberger. or loser of Hendricks/Kampmann
I think the UFC would really like to book Diaz/GSP, so they may figure out a way to do that. Obviously the UFC hasn't booked anything yet, and Diaz is still months from returning...a lot can change.
Maldanado is thinking of moving 2 185.
Leben/Maldonado it is, then. I like it.
So Bonnar is hanging them up. Outside of the Forrest fight, what are you going to miss about him?
Well, if you'd asked a couple of hours ago, I'd say "fun, always game, slugger," etc. Still liked watching him fight, but too bad he couldn't lay off the PEDs.
No one's talking about Dave Herman's wacky tobacco test coming up green. Buy/Sell: Dave Herman's next fight isn't in the UFC.
Buying that. I think he's gone.
Super disapointed to learn about Bonnar, lost a lot fo respect for him especially after i learned this was his second failed test for roids
Not the greatest swan song. Dumb. At some point the UFC is going to have to get stricter with PEDs. Right now it's such a "yeah it's a problem, not much we can do about it" policy.
You got to love Jamey Varner against the Young Assassin, man! That's going to be a scrap!
I dig that fight. Varner is looking good in his return to the UFC, and Guillard always brings it. Hard to find anything wrong with that match-up.
Thanx for the chat after Sandy. Dana is making promises on the same fighters with didn't opponents. If all was even would yo ou rather see Gsp/Silva or Jbj/Silva?
Ultimately, Jones/Silva. If they are the consensus No. 1 and No. 2 fighters in the world, and they are close enough in weight, why not let them collide? But if GSP looks like GSP against Condit, I'll be plenty happy with that one.
Is it time for the UFC to cut Dave Herman? He seems to be more of an embarassment than an asset to the company.
I think so. It's not even that he got popped for marijuana (which was about as surprising as Matt Riddle testing positive), but that he fought like he was on the drug plus a handful of sedatives. Not a great showing against Nog.
Bisping gets a lot of hate from the fans, but I just realized, the guy will fight anybody. Never backs down from a challenge.
Yeah, he will. I like that he's ready to go anytime, anywhere. Hope he finally gets a title shot, though there's a lot of confusion and congestion in front of him.
Any chance Bellator does away with the tournaments in 2013? I would rather see Mo Lawal fight the champion or another top guy fight the champion then enter a tournament.
I am with you on that, but I think Bellator will keep its model the same. Why enter Mo Lawal into a tournament when the guy has the credentials he does? Would really like to see them do away with the tournament.
Chuck, what's the word on Jim Miller? Seems like he's been out of action forever.
Well, I checked in with him last week (pre-Sandy), and he said he was ready to go and a little frustrated waiting to find out who he'd fight next. My guess is he'll be matched up real soon.
Chuck, which division in the UFC do you think is the deepest/most exciting right now?
I'd still go with 155 pounds, though 170 is top heavy too. Both of those divisions you could mix and match and have nothing but great fights. At long last the heavyweight division is getting a little more compelling, too.
you think the ufc will return to china as much as they are brazil? seems like such a big market that they're only now begining to tap.
Having talked to UFC officials, I think they'd like it to become a big market, but there are obstacles to overcome. One is the government signing off on the permit to fight in the mainland there. Two, education. The UFC wants to educate people to make it a safe entry in (officials, refs, etc). Sounds like they want to roll out an Asian Fight series and TUF, so we'll see.
Did I hear correctly that Sean Sherk wants to give it one more go?
I know there's been some flirtations, but didn't hear that definitively. Where did he say it?
They need to drug test JDS, cause there is no chance he knocks out Wladamir.
Ha, yeah. I do think there's a degree of the invincible working JDS right now, which could look like complacency. If they allow kicks and elbows and flying knees, then he might beat Wladamir...otherwise, flight of fancy.
If Spider's only interest is Bones & GSP, why doesn't he just give up the belt so that others in the MW division can fight for it? It's not like those two Mega Fights are going to be title fights.
I think he has interest in 185ers still. He doesn't have a big interest in Jones (though money will pique his interest enough). Realistically, if Condit beats GSP, Silva might be defending his 185-pound belt.
Any news on Guida's 1st fight @ featherweight?
Not yet. Hoping it's Korean Zombie.
Sup with Jeff Monson dressing up as a Teletubby for Halloween?? What did you go as?
I saw the Monson costume, and what a way to conceal all that scar tissue and anarchy. Good looking stuff. Me? With Sandy taking the power out in my neck of the woods, went as coalminer with a flashlight on my head.
Who would you take if randy couture and dan Henderson fought in there primes?I am leaning towards hendo.
I would have liked to have seen that, or Hendo/Ortiz, or Hendo/Liddell. Any of those would have been fun. Hard to say, as they are pretty evenly matched, but I'd give the nod to Henderson. That H-Bomb is the x-factor.
Next time you say that Guillard "always brings it" please add "unless he's on the ground, then he brings absolutely nothing".
Well, he ends up on the ground because he brings it. Comes in, gets excited, throws them dukes, and ends up getting choked out by an IT guy. BUT, he was close to dropping Cerrone.
UFC doesn't want A.Silva to give up his belt , or the chance to fight a "superfight" while still champ, even though most die hard MMA fans know C.Weidman would give Silva the fight of his life.
I do get the feeling that Weidman would give A. Silva a run for his money. If Sonnen had the blueprint, Weidman has the execution.
Chuck, I'm attending wsof tomorrow give me a couple tips on what to look for when attending mma event. I've never seen a fight live. Thanks
No real tips, other than if the action's on the ground and you can't see the jitz-interplay, look up at the jumbo. And be on the lookout for the aphrodisiacs; they've got a small gaggle of ring girls.
What are you hearing about Strikeforce in 2013? I keep hearing that Showtime will pick it up just because of Rousey and the womens 135 division.
Haven't heard much other than gut speculation on it. I think Showtime will remain in the MMA game, and right now Strikeforce is the property. Hard to say though, with the bad blood that gets stirred up (and restirred) between Zuffa and Showtime.
So, wait. Now Henderson and Sonnen are "in cahoots?" You believe this is a devised thing, or did they hatch it after TUF tape was rolling?
Saw that. I know they are flimflams from way back, so who really knows. My feeling is that Henderson, who was in Singapore when Sonnen and Jones were signed to fight/coach TUF, finally spoke to Chael and they've worked it out...and now they're adding drama to it.
With Herman getting popped for marijuana, I wonder what that does to perceptions about the Shield's fight. Also wondering if Nick,Jake, and Herman got together afterwards for "tea"
Well, that is something to wonder about. It's such a silly thing. For one, it's not a performance enhancer, so there's a part of me that says "who cares?" For two, if you're going to do it, be wiser in your usage.
I'm surprised they didn't put Bisping against Weidman for an official #1 contender bout.
That Tim Boetsch is a monkey wrench, Jonesy. Not only did he derail Okami's homecoming in Japan, but he ruined Hector Lombard's UFC debut. Hard not to fault the UFC sticking him in there with Weidman.
Dana White shoots off his big mouth as usual and says Rhonda Rousey will be in the UFC, most likely for a Cyborg fight. Ok he does that fight and then what? Still not any real depth of talent or other fights to make.
Yeah, that's the problem. His original concerns are still the thing: There's no depth. Not sure how the UFC would handle it, but they'd need to get the Liz Carmouche's and the Sara McCann's of the world some marketing.
I feel like marijuana penalties are WAY to harsh since it isn't a performance enhancing drug. Could the policy be changed in the future.
Doubtful. It's a commission thing.
Speaking of Weidman v Boetsch, how's that one going to go? For the record, Boetsch has some of my favorite knockouts of the past few years.
The first thing you want to say is that Boetsch has no chance, but that dude is tough, smart and wily. I don't think he'll beat Weidman, but wouldn't be surprised if he makes Weidman earn it (which is something Munoz couldn't do).
I'm a big fan of the skyscraper, wat do you think he's lacking to move to the next level besides a chin?
He's still at times tentative, and at other times a little wild, but overall he's made tremendous leaps in his game. He doesn't wade to punches, and he's beginning to use his range in the stand-up. Looking forward to seeing him against one of the UFC's big guns.
I have a new idea for judging MMA. 5 judges instead of 3, with 1 judge veiwing the fight from a moniter instead of ringside.
What was Herman thinking with his standup
My imagination doesn't go that far.
Have the Broncos turned the season around? That beatdown of New Orleans was a nice statement game.
The good news is the schedule gets easier. Two road games next, but against soft cats (Bengals and Panthers). I'd like to say yes, but cautiously saying "hope so."
Now that we're finally close to the fight going down, do you agree with Carlos Condit's decision to smolder the interim belt and wait for GSP?
Eh, I can understand his decision to wait. What's harder to understand is the UFC giving him the option to wait. Then again, he did the UFC a bunch of solids back when they needed him, so it was a way of repaying him. Bottom line: Would like to see title fights continue on, but it's an interim title belt and that means wholly imaginary anyway.
Hey Chaz. I think we talked about this before but I think it's high time for another "Comeback" TUF. And here's my idea using the 185 division as an exapmle. Have 16 fighters split into two teams coached by the two "Number one Contenders", in this case Weidman and Bisping. Whoever's fighter wins TUF, will face his OWN coach for a title shot somewhere down the line. The losing coach then goes back in line and Dana can do what he wants...Ps. If Dana reads these chats and uses my idea I want 50K and ringside seats to the finale. Toughts?
Two things. Dana always reads these chats, and (almost) always takes whatever ideas we can present him. Check's on the way. Another thing, I love the idea of another comeback show. That was one of the better seasons of TUF, and look what happened....Serra went from being posterized by a Shonie Carter dervish punch to becoming the 170-pound champ.
Who is the most attractive female MMA fighter of all time?
The eye of the beholder, Pumptown. I think you'd get two warring factions arguing Carano against Rousey, though.
I'm super excited about the Nate Diaz v Ben Henderson fight. Opionions seem to vary greatly on who has the edge. I think Nate avoids the takedown and outboxes him, and maybe even gets in his head a little.
Wouldn't surprise me at all. And remember, Diaz is a monster on the ground. He is great in transitions. He can sweep. He's better than most off his back. Those elbows are active. Bendo will have to be careful wherever the fight is.
WHATS YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE BACK AND FORTH CHATTER WITH JON JONES AND DANIEL CORMIEX
Don't blame Cormier for trying.
Why hadn't rampage moved up to heavy since he has trouble making weight? I think he'd boost the division, i don't like anyone outside of the to 5
For just a minute, when him and Matt Mitrione were mouthing at each other, thought we might see it.
Which MMA fighter, if found as a steroid user, would make you most disappointed in the sport?
It'd have to be Danny Boy Downes, wouldn't it? To find out he was on PEDs and yet walk around in that frame would be disheartening.
Yeah, she'd have to be. She's one of the more marketable fighters. They could definitely bring a small boatload of good women fighters, but how many could they sell as legit contenders for Rousey?
What are your thoughts about Sonnen bringing Hendo as one of his coaches?
Smart move. Takes some heat off the media/fans who were clamoring for Hendo against Jones. Suddenly Hendo is part of Team Chael. Brilliant.
JDS said he could take one of the Kliskco brothers in a boxing match, hes insane hed get lit up
Yeah. Guess it's easy to make proclamations like that when you know it'll never happen.
If Dana always reads this chat then tell him to start putting more flyweights on the shows. Start bulding the division and be serious about it.
Dana, you heard what Craig said. Let's get it done. (I do know that Sean Shelby is working at it...he's slowly adding flies).
Do you think Carlos Condit should have defended his belt once or was it smart to wait.
Smart to wait, since he had the option. Big pay day, and ultimately, he wants the belt. The belt's with GSP.
I asked Sherk 2 months ago at a local show here if he was fighting, said yes and he still thinks he can get 1 more championship run in before retirment
Well, there you got. Wouldn't mind seeing the Muscle Shark back in action. In light of all these PED busts, best come clean.
It seems like GSP hardly ever fights. Including his fight vs Condit, Over/under 3 fights in the next 15 months?
I'd say over. He has a fight in three weeks. Factor in Silva (perhaps late spring) and Diaz (fall), and we're there.
Am I only the one who misses having 2-3 UFC cards a month?
Nope...I've listened to others with similar yearnings.
What's next for a guy like Ryan Bader? Seems he's got a lot of pressure to prove he's more than a mid-tier LHW.
Good question, Matt. I think he'll get a cusp top-ten type next. Seems like in his biggest spots he comes up short (Jones, Tito Ortiz, Machida). His one good win was against Rampage, but that was a Rampage whose mind was a million different places.
Would you call Ken Shamrock for $11.99/min? Haha
I mean, it's hard to justify that kind of kibble on Shamrock.
I have no interest in flyweights. 155 lb division is great, 145 is almost as good, but under that you get tiny dudes that are just so small, its like a circus act watching 5'3 guys jumping around the ring.
I know plenty of people who echo this sentiment, Joe. Did a piece about it a few weeks ago. People like the idea of heavyweights because whoever is atop that division is atop all divisions. The lighter guys, it's about aesthetic, technical skill and frenetic energy. Got to love those things to get on board with the flies.
MANNING BOWL THIS YEAR?
Alright guys, I need to get out of here. Thanks for stopping in. Didn't see a single "Hey, Bro," greeting, which means we're either devolving, or quite the opposite. If I didn't get to your question, hit the Twitter feed, @ChuckMindenhall.
