Helloooo ACC fans. Let's go.
Does duke win again?
Yes. I think they beat Georgia Tech, and it wouldn't shock me in the least if they beat Miami, too.
Does Miami self impose a bowl ban. If so who is in the title game from the coastal?
Your guess is as good as mine. If I were the AD, I wouldn't do it. Not when there is such a good chance of playing for the ACC title right now. If they do do it, though, it depends -- I would think it would be Virginia Tech because they won the head-to-head over Duke.
How bad does FSU hammer VaTech thursday night?
I'm going to find out, Jay, but I said recently that if FSU doesn't win by two touchdowns I'd be surprised.
Heather, do you think there is any correlation between the number of ACL injuries for Maryland this year, and their newly installed "FieldTurf"?
Well, not really because Caleb Rowe got hurt at BC. It's worth asking if it is a strength and conditioning issue, but more than anything I think it's ridiculously, absurdly bad luck.
Does David Cutcliffe leave Duke at the end of the season?
I would be shocked if he did. He has been committed to that program from the start.
HD, are you ready to get off the LT wagon? Seems the NFL scouts have...
Oh yeah, jumped off head first, knocked some sense in.
BC loses to ND this weekend by how much?? Can we keep it under 20??
I don't know. Notre Dame might be pretty mad it almost let one get away last week. My guess is they leave no doubt who the better team is this weekend.
UNC is coming off a bye week. Historically. CPJ sucks against teams that have had an extra week to prepare. GT?s bowl chances disappear, finishing with a 5-7 record. Assuming that we can even beat Duke. You agree with that statement?
There's a reason I haven't had GT in the weekly bowl projections, Jon. I think they lose to UNC this week.
Where do you think Chad Morris will be the head coach next year? I see atleast three SEC coaches being gone at the end of this year, and I think as much as he has improved Clemson's offense he will be one of the hottest names this offseason.
He is one of the rising stars, no doubt. He also got a pretty sweet contract deal after last year's title game to keep him there.
What do you think of the point spread for the fsu va tech game? To low to high or about right? Is this a trap game for fsu?
14 pts, right? About right. Yeah, it's a trap game, but only because FSU hasn't played well out of state this year, and because it's in Blacksburg. Not because of anything Virginia Tech has done lately.
Hi Heather, and thanks for your excellent coverage. What is wrong with VT's Offense and Special Teams? I absolutely have not seen any improvement in these two areas the entire season. Yet Frank talks to the media, like the fans are stupid.
I asked Frank about this several different ways on his teleconference today, but he obviously didn't give very revealing answers. You nailed it, though, they haven't gotten better, and that's a concern.
Realistically, what are GT's chances on going to the ACCCG? GT has to win out and Miami needs to lose to Virginia and Duke, but what about the self-imposed ban? Where does that play in?
Well, the head-to-head loss to VT in the season opener is what will doom them if it were to come to that.
Has there ever been, in the history of college football, so season ending injuries at QB like there are this season for UMD?
I asked the other bloggers this question last week, and the only thing we came up with was a few years ago remember when Cincinnati used five QBs and still went to the Orange Bowl? But yeah, nothing like what Maryland has seen.
Hey HD!! As an FSU fan that has been through plenty of dissapointments, I look at this year as great year. If we win out and play/beat a undefeated Louiville, we will have beat 3 top 10 teams. The loss to NC State was unforgivable, but even if we won the computers hate us and would not of put us in front of ND, KU, or Oregon. Agree?
Well, I appreciate your optomism, Zach, but I think it would be considered a good year that could have been great.
Hi Heather, when Spaz gets fired at BC what are the chances they keep their current offensive coordinator, that has been the one bright spot this year I think is the passing game of Chase Rettig your thoughts?
Yeah, no doubt, Doug Martin has done a great job, but what's with the running game? Yeesh. I don't know, it depends on who they hire, but usually guys want to bring in their own coordinators.
You keep talking about Clemson and FSU needing to win out for 2 ACC teams to reach BCS bowls. But even if FSU loses to Florida, they still go to the Orange Bowl. And if Clemson beats South Carolina, there's your second BCS bowl, with an FSU loss. So FSU doesn't really have to win out do they? Also, who would Clemson likely play as an at-large bid, and Sugar or Fiesta?
Yeah, you're right, FSU doesn't have to beat Florida, but it definitely has had to win all of its remaining ACC games, and here's the other thing -- an FSU win over Florida would make Clemson's SOS look better, considering the Noles were their only loss. As for Clemson, if it got the at-large bid (which is still a long shot), it would be Sugar or Fiesta. No way to tell which one. Sugar could also take Louisville.
So far, what has been the best game this season, in your opinion?
Great question. As for quality football, the FSU-Clemson game was probably the best. Sheer entertainment value was probably NC State-FSU.
Does the preseason costal div favorite make a bowl game this year? Gotta win 2 of 3 and suddenly UVa doesn't look like a lock
You're right about that UVA game. Hoos might give Hokies a surprise this year just like they did to NC State. But yeah, I think they go bowling with wins over BC and UVa.
who is your coach of the year if you had avote right now>
Cutcliffe or Golden.
Heather, You wrote in a recent article that FSU is not "back". If being in the N.C. talk and if they do win out, going 12-1 with an ACC championship and an Orange Bowl victory is not "Back". What exactly is your definition of being "Back".
Not losing to NC State on the road, staying in the top five, and winning the ACC title more than twice every seven years.
I can't help but think about how great it would have been to have Chris Givens running opposite Campanaro again this year. But how much did knowing he'd have to be the number one receiver help Campanaro improve in the offseason? Or did you think he was ready to be this good already?
I had so much confidence in Camp that I took Nuk Hopkins off my preseason Top 25 players list and put Campanaro in there instead.
It's a bit early but how do you feel about Wake Forest's chances against Vanderbilt at the end of the season?
That's going to be a really tough game for the Deacs, but that game and the NC State game are the reasons I have them in the bowl projections.
What is the one thing the Tigers have to do to beat SCAR? My vote is keep Clowney out the backfield and the OLine give Tajh time to do his thing!!!
You got it.
Do you think the BCS got it right with having two 2-loss teams ahead of FSU?
That's not how it looks in my top 25 I turn in for ESPN.com.
HD, do the players from the ACC's programs read your blog?
Lol yeah some of them do.
Clemson looks to be much better defensively than they were when they played FSU earlier in the year. Hypothetically, if they were to face FSU away from Doak now, who would you pick to win?
Interesting you ask that. I almost ranked CLemson above FSU this week. I think they are playing better than the Noles, but I couldn't ignore the head to head in that one. Yeah, I'd pick the Tigers right now.
Seeing how Pitt almost, should have, beat ND, does WF have a chance? And dont try and cop out by saying focus on this week first, I just want to know if you think WF at full strength could beat ND.
Will Clemson put up 30 plus against South Carolina.
Florida scored 44 on them.
Do you think Florida Should be ranked higher in the BCS considering the other polls have them ranked closer to the top five. Also i've heard there is a possibility that the Noles could play Notre Dame in the orange bowl. your thoughts?
No, I don't think Florida should be ranked higher. As for the bowls, no, Notre Dame won't be available by the time it's the OB turn to pick.
Do you think that Paul Johnson's continued rotation of running backs will make some highshool RB's leery of playing in that system? Hence making recruiting tougher?
No, that's the one system RBs should flock to to try to be the next Jon Dwyer, or Anthony Allen. The only reason he's doing what he's doing is because he doesn't have one of those guys right now.
should miami even bother with the bowl ban? i feel like waiting til this late in the season to do it after they already know how their season will turn out (more or less) says a lot less to the ncaa then imposing it at the beginning of the season
You mean like last year, when it looked like the Canes would go to beautiful Shreveport? Yeah, like I said before, I wouldn't do it now.
Heather, starting to hear rumors that the big time boosters are getting fed up in Blacksburg...i think we all know that due to Frank's loyalty, that's what it's going to take for coaching changes. $$$ carries alot of power. I will say that in defense of the coaches, they are not the ones throwing the ball 10 feet over the receivers heads. Thoughts??
I think VT fans are spoiled. Sorry guys, but it's true. Eight 10-win seasons and now things aren't going so well and everyone is ready to fire everyone. Well, that's life. Every now and then you lose more than you win. Yeah, I'd guess there would be some staff changes, but not at the top.
HD- Disgruntled Terps fan here. Can you tell me SOMETHING to get excited about?
The Wild Crab?
i meant do you think Florida State should be ranked higher in the BCS
Yes I have them at No. 7.
In all honesty, can you make a good case as to why the ACC should have 2 teams in BCS bowls?
Besides the fact I want to go to them? Sure, to win out and beat South Carolina and FLorida and finish with one loss each? That's deserving.
Who do you think wins ACC POY? I like Gio...
Gio was last week's flavor of the week, but Boyd seems to set a record every Saturday.
Does Diggs win ACC ROY?
Close race with Diggs and Duke Johnson. I really think this one will go down to the wire.
do you think this year will finally bring the change in offensive playcalling that people have been asking for for so many years?
I don't think that's the only problem, Mike, but yeah, if I had to guess, I'd guess they go a different direction this offseason.
Any chance FSU gets to play a true top 5 team in their bowl, or are we stuck with Louisville or worse?
How do you feel about Rutgers? Cincy?
Heather, PLEASE let me respond on behalf of the Hokienation.....I agree with you about the 8 10-win seasons, but here is the frustration of all Hokie fans...with all the talent we get:CAN'T WIN THE BIG GAMES!!!!!!!! i.e. Orange Bowls, Alab, USC, Boise St, UGa, LSU, Mich, Clemson....look at our record against the top programs....IT'S HORRIBLE....that is the frustration!!!!!
I hear you, Laura.
Providing that everybody stays after this season, do you think Clemson has a shot at a NC next year?
No doubt. I said this preseason (and last) that FSU's year was 2012, Clemson 2013.
All the FSU fans ever do now is talk about how good their offense is, but they don't look that good to me, whenever I see them play. I read somewhere that their offensive stats are good only because they've been playing really bad defenses. Do you agree?
Well, if you look at the defenses -- Wake, Miami, Duke, Murray State, Savannah State -- I think that question answers itself. Now, not to say FSU is not talented on offense -- it most certainly is -- BUT can those same players dominate against the likes of Florida, LSU and Alabama? I think there is still something to prove there.
@Rick(NY) Name one team that gets more yards per play than FSU. FSU gets 7.7y/p. No one in the top 10 in the BCS even comes close.
Look at Notre Dame's sked compared to FSU. There are five ranked teams on it. FSU has two FCS schools.
Can you summarize the ACC's year in a word?
Out of the Top 25 Recruits in the State VA. 15 have commited to an SEC Team. Other than winning the big ones what does VT have to do to Land top talent.
Move to the SEC? Kidding, kidding. I don't think talent is the problem at VT. Look at who's come through that program.
So does that mean that even with all the talent, and game used talent, that FSU has returning next year that CU is gonna be the flag carrier? I think FSU returns more talent with game experience than CU does.
I think we have to wait and see who leaves early for the NFL for both teams, to be honest. And who comes in the next recruiting class, especially to help Clemson's D.
Do you think Clemson will keep Nkemdiche?
That's what I'm talkin' bout. No idea.
I'd feel a lot better if BC had ND in South Bend. They seem like a different team on the road. I fear my boys are in for a long Saturday night, but at least the whole nation will get to see it!
Lol and that's a good thing?
Assuming all the pieces fall into place and GT makes it to the ACCCG and then wins it, does that change opinions on Paul Johnson? Does it convert some people into believers that the system can in fact work?
I don't think the system is hte problem. Haven't you heard the saying, it's not the Xs and Os it's the Jimmy's and the Joe's? Recruiting, recruiting, recruiting.
Your right one bad season doesn't mean the end.. But I'm with Laura things need to improve to move the next level...How does Tech do this??
Frank Beamer retires in two or three years, Shane becomes head coach, brings in an OC like Chad Morris and a recruiter like James Franklin, and BOOM, you win and I'm your AD.
Heather,Any truth to the rumors that there is internal conflict in the VT coaching staff because Frank Beamer brought his son in as the heir apparent when fans have assumed that Bud Foster would be next in line for years?
Nope. Haven't heard anything of the sort, and wouldn't believe it if I did.
Any chance Ralph Friedgen comes home to help his friend win a national championship before he retires?
I like the idea of it, but I think age could be a factor there. Might make a push to go younger, considering the trend of staff changes that were made last year.
Do you really think VT would ever hire Shane as HC?
Why not? I think he needs more time to prove himself there, but it's a logical step.
HD, how many offenses out there have turned the ball over 2 times vs MurryST, 4 times vs Duke, 2 times vs UM, 2 times vs BC and rack up as many penalties as FSU normally does?
There have been a TON of turnovers in the ACC this year. UVa, NC State, VT come to mind quickly.
Could GT ever get good recruits with the triple option and such high academic standards?
I think we're in the midst of figuring that out, Jason. So far it's looking average.
What coaching (HC) changes do you see in the ACC for next year?
Just at Boston College, Steve. I think everyone else will be safe. Tom O'Brien is on the hot seat, no doubt, but my gut tells me he'll get them to a bowl game and be OK.
Does CPJ weather the storm with a new AD?
I think his contract weathers the storm for him, and I also think they'll be a much better team next year. Most everyone returns.
I'm thinking of walking on as QB for the Terps. What do you think?
I'm wondering now if Shawn Petty can play QB AND linebacker in a game since Hartsfield is out now, too.
Ok guys, my time is up here. Thanks for joining me this week. See you in Blacksburg.hd
