Happy Election Day, everyone. Let's talk about who gets your votes in the AFC East.
James, what will it take for the Jets to give Tebow a start and see what he can do?
I see Tebow gets your vote today over Sanchez, LeAnne. I've been critical of Rex Ryan for his undying loyalty to Mark Sanchez. It's clear he's not a franchise QB, but Ryan seems very much against making a change. The problem is I don't know if Tebow is a better option. So I can't get on him too hard if the backup is not better.
If Sanchez has another bad game against Seattle, does ownership force Ryan to start Tebow in the next game?
Another vote for Tebow, Chris. Woody Johnson has no track record of being Jerry Jones. Johnson has been clear that he likes Tim Tebow and plans to keep him long-term. However, I don't envision ownership forcing the coach's hand. Johnson is not a "football guy." He's going to leave the football decisions to Ryan and GM Mike Tannenbaum.
Do the Jets stand a chance in Seattle? Russell Wilson is rounding into form and their pass defense is very good. There run defense has been exposed with Gore and Peterson but Im not sure if the Jets have the bullets to beat that defense.
We have a vote for Seattle on Sunday, Troy. The Jets do have a chance. This is the NFL. Seattle is certainly not unbeatable. The Seahawks have four losses already. The Jets have a huge challenge because of the travel. It's a very long road trip and Seattle's home-field advantage is one of the best.
But I do like the matchup historically of rookie quarterbacks against Rex Ryan defenses for the first time. Miami QB Ryan Tannehill needed a second go around to do much better. Russell Wilson could struggle.
What do you think about Buddy Nix's comments about not leaving until he has a franchise qb in place? Am I going to be out of a job next year?
Ryan, Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey are pretty straight shooters, especially by NFL standards. Nix tried to clean up his comments, but it is what it is. Expect competition next year unless you light it up in these final eight games.
Who's the starting QB for the Jets next year?
I don't think it should be Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow. But the Jets rarely do what I suggest.
Should the dolphins worry about making the playoffs after the lost to Indy? What do they have to do to make it thru the wildcard?
The Dolphins will tell you they weren't thinking playoffs to begin with. They are very much a "week-to-week-and-be-1-0" type team. However, I think this game could come back to haunt them. The Steelers or Ravens are getting one wild card. The last one is going to be a close race between several teams and the Colts will be one of them. Miami basically lost all tiebreakers with Indy on Sunday.
Miami also lost some value on its second-round pick it got from the Colts in the Vontae Davis trade.
Do you have any explanation on why Sean Smith played so bad on Sunday? Do you think he will bounce back?
That was the worst game I've seen from Smith since I started covering the AFC East last year. Players are going to have bad games. It happens. The key for Smith is not to have a bad month or bad second half of the season.
James, was Luck that good, Miami's pass defense that bad, or where they just lost in trying something. Rushing 3 and giving up the long 3rd down completion comes to mind.
It was a combination of the two, Fred. Miami's pass defense was awful. But the Dolphins came into the game as the best defense in the league on third down. They are legit in that area. That's where Luck proved how good he was to keep the chains moving and making a lot of big-time throws on third down. Watching him in person for the first time Sunday, I'm convinced he's legit.
After the dolphins colts game, do you think the dolphins are pretenders or contenders? And what are their playoff chances now?
I left that game feeling good about both teams. Will the Dolphins or Colts win the Super Bowl? No. But both teams have things going for itself and should be in the playoff hunt in December.
Do you think greg mcelroy will get a chance to play if the jets go 3-8 by week 12?
Jets fans, let the Greg McElroy dream go. He's the No. 3 quarterback for a reason. He's not a franchise guy. If Mark Sanchez falters, Tim Tebow will get a shot.
How am I doing? Is our surprise season so far a result of my coaching or just some dumb luck? Do you feel players are really buying into my system?
Joe, I liked your even-keel makeup and dry sense of humor from the beginning. You're doing well and players are buying in. I wish you were more informative about injuries. But that's a media issue. The coaching is fine.
WHY WONT THE JETS USE TEBOW AS THE HALFBACK AND GREENE AS THE FULLBACK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I don't know about Greene as a fullback. But I do like the idea of Tebow getting a few carries in the backfield.
Will the Bills continue to emplay a split in carries at rb or will one of the backs emerge as the season progresses?
I've been writing for weeks that C.J. Spiller needs more carries. If that means less playing time for Fred Jackson, so be it. The Bills' coaching staff doesn't want to listen.
With the draft picks the dolphins have, why didn't they make a move before the trade deadline for a corner or wr? Do they think they have a better chance in the draft?
I was fine with that. Don't forget that the Dolphins are building for the long-term. Yes, they are winning now, but you will be happy in April when they have five picks in the first three rounds. Miami didn't see any offers it liked at the deadline.
What does Buffalo need to do in order to beat the Patriots this week?
I don't have enough space to explain. But the two biggest things are run the ball and force turnovers on D. I will wait until later in the week to make my pick. But I pretty much have my mind made up in this one.
They can't beat an NFL team, though. Not even close.
Who's the best team in the AFC East as of right now?
Patriots were the best AFC East team at the start of the year and they are at the midpoint. New England will be the best division team at the end of the year, too.
Walker , you put Sanchez in another system/team , like the Texans , Baltimore, someone with protection and playmakers .... he would be just as good. He has NOBODY!
Mark Sanchez is not as good or better than Matt Schaub or Joe Flacco. Neither of these players are elite. But Sanchez is a clear third behind these two.
James Walker taking chalk in his AFC East picks yet again......
I don't know what "chalk" is when I make these picks. I don't pay attention to points and stuff like that. I just cover the teams and pick who I think will win. I'm 21-6 in the first half of the season. I'm doing really well.
Do you see a quarterback in the AFC East that will become the next Tom Brady?
Tom Brady is top five all-time. There is not another Tom Brady in the division.
Do you think the Dolphins can bounce back from the loss against the Colts, and beat the Titans in Miami?
I need a WR and a good flex option this week due to all the byes. PLEASE HELP !! Top Flex options are Gresham , Cotchery , Blackmon , Reece , Andre Brown, Myers , Sanders , Donald Jones , Danario , Jacquizz , TY Hilton . Please Please pick 2
Emmanuel Sanders should be one. Your pick on the other.
In the wake of the Bills loss to the Texans, both Fitz and Chan admitted that Spiller needs to be more heavily involved. In your opinion, is this simply lip service, or do see CJ becoming the #1 back?
I will believe it when I see it. I'm not sure what took the Bills so long to realize this. He's only leading the NFL in yards per carry.
Do you think the bills can get on track to at least compete this year. Or will it be more of the same for us Bills fans.
The Bills will be watching the playoffs from home, which has been the case since 1999. That's nothing new. The question is will they fight in the final eight games or lay down. Buffalo laid down last year. So I'm in wait-and-see mode to see if this team fights.
are the bills the worst team in the league
No, Buffalo is not that bad. There are a few teams worse.
The good thing about the NFL is you can get better. Will the Bills get better or worse in the second half?
Hey JW, do you think the jets will go after mostly offensive players next year in free agency and the draft?? ... For example dwayne bowe and a RB as the 1st or 2nd rd draft choice.
The Jets are in a tough spot with their salary cap, Jamaal. They renegotiated and pushed back a lot of salaries to prolong the cap hit. New York may need to make some drastic cuts to be players in free agency.
Is Rex on the "hot seat"
Not this year, Josh.
Will the Patriots go to another Super Bowl this year?
The Patriots and Packers were my preseason picks. I'm still feeling solid about those picks. But a lot can happen between now and February.
what can the Jets do to get some talent in the locker room next season .... who is going to be the best avail?
The draft is probably the best rout, Josh. I mentioned earlier that New York's cap situation next year isn't the best. Maybe they saved some money by not negotiating with Darrelle Revis and can use that on some free agents.
Will Keller be our team's leading receiver for the rest of the year, and if so, what does that say about our team?
Dustin Keller is a pending free agent and will be looking for a raise.
James, if the Phins go 5-3 the rest of the way (presumably losing to the 49ers and Pats twice) do you think their 9-7 record will win a wild card?
That's a roll of the dice. There may be another team or two and it could come down to tiebreakers. Ten wins is usually a magic number to get in most seasons.
Everyone, thanks again for the chat. Remember to check out the AFC East blog for all the latest.
