Fantasy Sports with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric and we've got lots of football to discuss today. Also, if baseball is on your mind, you came to the right place. So thanks for showing up and let's have some fun!

Jeff (Portland, ME)

Eric, I am hurtin' at receiver. With Antonio Brown most likely out, I need to find a replacement. Who do you like this week out of: E.Sanders, D.Alexander, G.Tate, D.Bess, or R.Broyles? Would need to drop either Dwyer or G.Jennings for one. Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Yikes. I don't like dropping either of those fellows, but I suppose Dwyer makes sense. Emmanuel Sanders will start for Brown and the matchup looks awesome, so I'd just go with him.

Julie (Tulsa)

Assuming Tebow takes over after this week, do you like him or Tannehil ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

I'm hardly assuming this change at QB happens at all this season, but I like Tannehill more. It's certainly possible that the success Tebow had in Denver won't be duplicated in New Jersey, but I'd say go with the guy playing now.

Abel (Paign)

Leshoure for denarius moore? Fair trade? Moore seems to have an easier schedule

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

He sure does, but in general wide receivers are riskier because they get fewer touches. Plus, wide receiver depth is greater. I'd keep the running back, personally.

Jason (Boston)

McFadden owner. Also a Goodson owner. Should I bother with Reece? Should I keep Goodson? I have LeShoure and PT and Sproles,

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Well, I expect Reece to matter this week, but I wouldn't use him over Leshoure and Pierre Thomas. I don't think Sproles will play this week. Ultimately, Reece's value is likely short-term.

Nate (Peoria)

EK!! I know you have Morris ahead of Spiller on your ROS rankings, but isn't Spiller's upside the highest of almost any RB?? I was offered Morris for Spiller, so am I a fool not to do it??

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Spiller's upside is immense, but Morris has proven himself, has little competition and is certainly safer. Spiller doesn't strike me as durable, either. I'd make the deal.

Dennis (Tampa)

Always online with you, but never get a chance to have my question answered by the expert! Maybe today will be my lucky day. In a ppr league I am starting Cruz and Wallace. With Harvin questionable, who should I flex, M. Floyd, L. Moore, or Keller? 1 pt every 15 yards for WR's and 1 pt every 10 yards for TE's. Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

I've got Moore ranked the best there, and with the scoring you have I wouldn't consider Keller.

TJ (Chicago (victory))

I know, I know...Felix Jones is miserable. BUT he is a running back! He's a bench guy for me anyway, any of these RBs worth picking up over him: Stephens-Howling, Ballard, Reece??? Thanks! Pushing for the playoffs...

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

He sure is ... miserable, and a running back. I like Ballard, but he will be sharing with Donald Brown by December. And in Arizona Stephens-Howling should share with Beanie Wells by then, too. I'd just stay with Felix at this point. Dallas does have a nice schedule.

Alex (DC)

What do you think is Mike Wallace's trade value now, or is he worth hanging on to? He's been slacking the last few weeks, but Brown's injury can only help his value, right? I also have Cruz, Bowe, L. Moore, Givens and Wright at receiver in 4 WR league. Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

If you call it slacking when a guy takes a 4-yard slant and turns it into a 50-yard touchdown, as Wallace did against the Giants, I'll take it! I'm buying low on Wallace, if still possible. He's your No. 2 WR and your depth really isn't great.

Fernando (Langley Park, MD)

Should I start Josh Freeman vs Oakland Or Tony Romo vs Philly?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Each should thrive, but I went with the Buc in the rankings.

Phillip (Missouri)

Eric: Who gets the bulk of the carries in the Steeler backfield Monday night?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Impossible to tell at this point, but I think it's Redman. He played well last week and is the healthiest. I doubt Mendenhall plays.

Chris (Work)

Hi Eric, would you continue to hold on to T. Young? or would you drop him for someone like Ty Hilton?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

I would prefer Titus both this week and beyond, but he's not a top-30 WR for me, so look for erratic statistical performances.

Marcel (Taiwan)

Thoughts on a trade, McFadden for Sproles?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Two injured folks, but McFadden is the better option when he plays. And for now it doesn't sound like he'll be out for more than a week or two. Sproles might miss just as much time, if not more.

Mel (Colorado Springs)

Hi Eric, what do you think of Brandon Myers in a PPR league for this week? It's either him or Davone Bess.

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I would go with Bess. In fact, on tv the other day I predicted his first touchdown of the season was coming on Sunday. He does catch passes.

Billy (Philadelphia)

Will Philly's o-line learn to protect Vick, and will Vick learn to recognize defensive coverages and audbile accordingly? Or is Vick droppable?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

No. No. And yes. Look, take any NFL team's 4 of 5 offensive line starters out and it's a mess. It's not really all Vick's fault. Or Andy Reid's. But the line is a joke. Vick has no time, and he makes poor decisions when he does. I don't think he's top 10 at QB, but he's ownable. Depends what else you can get if you drop him.

Helpful Hector (Springfield)

Josh Freeman already played Oakland along with the rest of the Bucs.

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Still has a good matchup this week, and he's been terrific for a month. Not the point.

John (New Jersey)

Is it time to start ranking Eric Decker over Demaryius Thomas? Decker and Manning seem to have more of a connection.

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Manning would have a good connection with anyone. I don't buy that as a reason to rank Decker better. Thomas is the better player. Both are terrific.

JR (kansas city)

I get we won't be seeing 3 td's from Leshoure again any time soon, but is he a sell-high or a hold?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

I think he's a reasonable hold, but based on the definition of sell high, yes, he won't be doing that again. So it's both.

Curran (Philly)

Non fantasy but may matter later in the season... If you were Reid would you sit Vick and justify it by not wanting a serious, career-changing injury because Vick is behind guys who havent really played together on a line before?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

If I own the Eagles I tell Reid to see what Nick Foles can do. The Eagles are not playoff bound. Perhaps the change doesn't happen until Week 14 or so, but I do not see Vick playing all 16 weeks. And Vick and Reid are gone in 2013.

Hank (Miami)

Is Donald Brown approaching Dumpsville?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

I kinda like him, actually. When he is healthy. Which isn't often.

Mike (Nashville)

TE Question. I know that V. Davis remains a top ten ranked TE but is that mostly on name recognition and "upside"? He has been invisible for awhile now. Considering B. Myers with a throw happy Oakland over Davis this week. What do you think?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Most tight ends outside of Gronk and Graham are inconsistent, and let's be clear on Myers, he hadn't scored a TD until last week. So I'd stick with Davis. He's been underused but that's indicative of the future.

All (Hakeem) Nick'd Up (AZ)

You ranked Charles ahead of Spiller. I own both and can't understand the ranking. The Chiefs are terrible and Charles is just not getting any opportunities. At least Spiller will get catches too...

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Well then you should start Spiller if that's who you like. It's your team. And who knows, depending on the scenario I might use Spiller, too. But let's not rip Charles; he's had some monster performances and while this is a terrible matchup for him, sometimes players act different on Monday night with everyone watching. Spiller is also capable of pulling up lame five minutes into the game.

Matt (QB Drama)

My QB situation has lost me game after game after game. Do I start Matt Stafford or Andrew Luck this week? Every time I start Stafford he does terrible and every time I bench him he get 20+ points.

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I'd go Luck this week and not overthink it. Look at matchups.

mike ((CT))

The Redsox win the world series next year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Anything is possible. Even that.

Mike (Ohio)

How good a chance is it that Shane Vereen will get enough carries this week to start him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

If Tom Brady runs up the score early, then I'd say it's a good chance Vereen can do what Joique Bell did a week ago.

Harvey (Baltimore, MD)

Would you pick up Beanie Wells for Tate or Hunter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I'd keep Tate and Hunter. Even a healthy Beanie wouldn't compare to Tate or Hunter if their starters got hurt.

Todd (CA)

I'm currently in 1st place largely due to the Bears DST. Can they really keep this up the entire year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

It hasn't happened before, and the schedule is a changing, but surely it's been a fun ride. A year ago the 49ers were the best defense and they finished 42nd. The Bears are 8th. It's ridiculous, and likely unsustainable.

Kai (Fremont, Calfornia)

Eric, all you experts rank Charles relatively higher than Ballard and Leshoure. Why? Who would you start out of those three? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Well, being one of "you experts" I would start Charles. Seems obvious to me! But that doesn't mean you need to. I like all 3 this week.

Sleepless (Seattle)

Time to give up on T. Gonzales? Has not done much in weeks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

This would be a bad week to give up on any Falcons. They play the Saints. And can you really find a sure-thing TE on free agency?

Matt (Saint Louis)

I've used Vick Ballard as a fill-in the last 2 weeks while Ridley and Rice were on their bye weeks and been pleased with the production. If he has another good performance tomorrow, does he come closer to being a starter and what value might he have in the trade market?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

I think the Colts like Donald Brown when he is healthy and Ballard will not be the No. 1 guy. And I don't think Ballard has much fantasy trade value, either.

Patrick (Honolulu)

Aloha Eric, I was offered Palmer and Spiller for Vick and Leshoure. Standard league. Take it or leave it? Mahalo!

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Seems wise to me to take it.

Jimbo (LA)

Is Chris Ivory close to a reliable fantasy option the next two weeks?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Why, because he scored on Monday night? Absolutely not reliable. In fact, if Sproles plays, Ivory probably doesn't even suit up for the game.

forward (thinking)

Your opinion on the best QB and RB for the rest of the season..

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Rodgers and Foster. But Brees, Brady and for RB Peterson and Rice are right there.

Dave (NY)

Thoughts on Shonn Greene going foward do you think he can be a solid rb2 rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I'm going to say no. But a usable flex choice.

Phil ((CA))

McCoy's slipping in the ranks, why doesnt philly give him the ball more...why?!?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Because Andy Reid wants to coach Dallas next season.

Josh (Hershey, PA)

Mr. Karabell, hope you're doing well. I started out this season 6-0, but have lost my last 3 games. With Rice/Charles/Gore in my backfield, should I look to change it up ROS? I also have Cruz and White at WR, Daniels at TE. Cheers.

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Nope. It's not real life, so it's not like you'll motivate the players or scare them. Rice has the best matchup of the week. I could see moving Charles, but I never just "change things up" because this is just about stats.

scott (Ohio)

If the Bears clinch early would you be worried about owning Forte or Marshall with the possibility of them getting benched during the fantasy playoffs?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Yes, for sure, but I don't see this happening. I mean, the Falcons still haven't lost. In Week 17 a lot of people could sit. In Week 16, I don't see it.

Ryan (Virginia)

Need to win out. Your rankings have them very close, so what are your feelings on Wilson, Gabber, or Locker/Hasslebeck?Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

If it's Locker then he'd be my pick, easily.

Donald Brown (Indy)

I can't stay healthy....surprised you don't put more faith in Ballard. Basically the same skill set.

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

I have plenty of faith in Ballard, but I think we all know the Colts like Brown, too, so when both are healthy, they share. If Brown was out a month... Ballard would probably be in my top 20. Just want to make sure you understand what I'm saying.

Brandon (Boston)

Three mediocre QBs on my team- Big Ben, Luck, and Romo. Dump one for roster space, or keep all three for matchup options?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I think your definition of mediocre differs from mine. I've got 2 of those guys in my top 10 for this week and the rest of the season.

Jason O (Milwaukee)

Have Big Ben and Vick for QBs. Should I drop Vick and sign Freeman?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

I'd drop Vick and sign a RB or WR that can potentially help later. Pitt has had its bye week, and Ben doesn't miss games, so why keep another QB.

Mike (SC)

Do you trust Dez this week? Only four targets last week. Thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Honestly, I never 'trust' him. He's so talented, but erratic. As his QB is.

Keith (VA)

How confident would you be in Cam Newton this week? He played well last week, but not what everyone expected against Washington's poor defense. Is Alex Smith a smarter start?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

I'd go Newton, but I'm not confident. I just don't think Smith is a better play.

Lindsey (SC)

Sticking with Locker. Are you of the opinion that Jake would make Britt a more reliable fantasy starter? or does his innaccuracy de-value any arm strength value he has over Hasselbeck?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I don't see my moving Britt or Nate Washington up regardless of the QB. Locker is the future guy, but he hasn't played in a while.

Chris (LA)

Would you consider Eli to dumpsville? I just can't start him with confidence anymore? I'd get more production out of guys like Palmer and Flacco

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Check Flacco's past 4 games and get back to me. Hasn't topped 13 points. Stick with Eli.

M. Reece (Oak)

Wait, you rank Fred Jackson higher than me, even though he's losing a timeshare and is facing Houston this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

He isn't facing Houston. Chicago is. And yes. I did. Reece probably splits touches with Taiwan Jones, or Palmer just throws 55 times.

Billy (Florida)

Would you try to buy low on Jamaal Charles for the fantasy playoffs?Wk 14 vs. Cleveland Wk 15 vs. OAkland Wk 16 vs. Indy and Wk 17 vs. Denver.

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Now you're talking.

John (Chicago)

Always appreciate how fast you get answers out, you are the best with these chats. The dreaded "Aaron Rodgers on a bye" week for me. Flacco vs Oakland, Tanneheil vs Tenn, or Mark Sanchez vs Seattle. I'm leaning toward Tanneheil, since I think the Ravens will run all over Oakland like Doug Martin. Your thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Makes perfect sense to me. I ranked Tannehill well.

Greg (Indy)

All you experts are not giving Ballard his just do. He won the game in OT 2 weeks ago with that crazy TD catch and run. Against the phins last week, he killed the clock with a 1st down run which he bulldozed and carried defenders along for a ride. He's better then Brown and an underrated pass catcher.

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

All you readers are missing the point. The COLTS like Brown. That comes into play in our evaluation.

jeff (NY)

Would you target players based on their fantasy playoff schedule? You said Shonn Greene would be a flex play but he plays Jax, Tenn & SD. Good matchups right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Yes I do, and yes I would. But Greene has also underachieved in nice matchups in the past.

Dan (Injury City)

Marcel Reese or Dwayne Allen at Flex?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

It will be Reece. Easily.

Bryce (Tucson)

Who throws for more yards this week, Palmer, Eli, Rivers?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Yards, Palmer. But Eli has the better week. Palmer should throw a few picks. And Rivers has just become irrelevant. Odd.

Max (NYC)

My RBs are getting robbed! Who would you start this week, Ryan Mathews or Ahmad Bradshaw? Both have been very frustrating and getting vultured in the red zone. Also who would you pick ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

I'd go Mathews now and the rest of the year. Nice upside, and he's not sharing like Bradshaw is.

Dave (Chicago)

Why did the Lions turn so quickly on Kevin Smith when he started out nicely?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

He's not as good - or durable - as Leshoure and Bell.

Dan (Queens)

Hi Eric,Of the seemingly giant crew of players who limped off the field this weekend (McFadden, Harvin, Bennett - just to name the ones I had starting), who jumps out at you as players that it's safe to release?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

There's enough TE depth that you can cut Bennett. But you can't cut McFadden or Harvin. Not even close.

Alex (PHILLY)

Eric, seasons not lost, believe in Vick. The defense just needs to play better our offense is still too good to deny. Why isn't Reid calling more roll outs for Vick? If I were mv7, I'd revert back to the falcon days and just drop back each play, check my 1st read, and then take off in the wind....every single play.

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

One NFL team has scored fewer points than Philly. Vick has no time to do anything. Defense stinks, too, but this isn't about playcalling. Season is lost. 6-10 team.

Nick (Raleigh)

What is Harvin's trade value right now?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

It's low because he is hurt. And I can't make a great case that his production will rise this month.

Mike Trout (Anaheim)

Hey Eric, will I win the MVP next season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Yeah, the voters will feel bad that they didn't vote for him this year.

JB (Georgia)

What are your thoughts on Aaron Hernandez for the rest of the season? Would be wise to trade for a steady backup like Tony Gonzalez? And of those 2, who do you think rates out the best for the rest of the season.

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

No. I would keep Hernandez around. When healthy he's elite. I think he plays this week.

Devin Brooks (Detroit)

Which side of the trade you like more Rodgers, Nelson, D.Brown for McCoy, Luck, Colston.. in a two QB league I have Schaub too.. CAN YOU PLEASE ANSWER PLEASE

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Rodgers is the best, but that's a lot of stuff on the other side. Take the other side.

Brad (Delaware)

Where do people and pundits think Eli will bounce back to? Mediocrity? He has only scored over 30 pts once this season in wk 2 and has 4 games below 20 pts. The NYG's run game isn't what it was and Eli's 4th quarter mojo is running out. Isn't Freeman the better play ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Eli has proven himself in past seasons, so I think it's premature to give up now. And, I might add, Eli is No. 2 in passing yards THIS season. Yeah, he's been inconsistent, notably of late. I am buying.

Eric (CO)

You suggested selling DeSean Jackson in a video yesterday. Would you deal him and Rashad Jennings for Steve Smith or is that giving up too much?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

That is too much. If it's a top 10 WR, absolutely.

Ron (NY)

Why do you like Green Ellis more than Jennings this week? I want to start Jennings!

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Why would my opinion make you not do what you want? Start Jennings.

Kevin (Syracuse)

how 'bout this? Yanks sign Bay and he goes off like Ibanez in a limited role?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

I think that's pretty funny, but then again, anything is possible. They'd need to keep Bay healthy for 400 at bats.

Dave (Charlotte)

Hey EK love the Insider Subscription really gives some great insight... can you please give me a ROS ranking for these flex options... Maclin, P. Thomas, N. Washington... PPR

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Probably that order. Thomas is no lock for touches, as we saw on Monday.

Steve (Mesa)

Calvin for Leshoure/Dez in a PPR, who wins?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

I'd stick with Calvin, personally.

Victor (Rhode Island)

Sproles status? i need a win desperately this week please answer

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

It's Wednesday. Even Sproles doesn't know. Check on Sunday.

Bob (Kentucky)

Thoughts on Jonathan Stewart? It was reported 2 weeks ago that he was going to be the main guy.

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

I laughed when I saw that. Coach speak. Don't ever listen to it.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Doug Martin is a top ___ RB in keeper formats...

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Top 10. I still like most of the top 10 these days over him. Not like they're old.

Dillon (Houston)

Eric, I would really appreciate your insight on a trade I was offered this week. I was offered Tony Romo and Ridley for Matt Ryan. My running backs are currently McCoy, Greene, and Fred Jackson. Should I pull the trigger?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Now that makes sense, because you need RB help. I do not like the Patriots schedule, though. I do think Romo can improve, starting this week.

Mason (IOWA)

Would you trade Arian Foster for Rice and Colston?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Yeah, I would.

Fred (Florida)

Am I the only one who doesn't understand how a guy can break his hand and possibly be back in two weeks?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I find it hard to believe myself, which is why I did NOT rank Sproles this week, at least not yet. He had surgery, too. That's the issue, not the break.

Steve (NJ)

Other than name value, what is the deal with Mega high ranking by most this week. Hasn't he struggled against Min in the past?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

I don't read much into that. Everyone double covers Calvin Johnson. And he's really good and had a nice game last week.

Lee (MN)

McGahee broke his hand last year and only missed a game

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Don't believe he had surgery, though. But regardless, if Sproles plays, I'd have him in my top 20 RB.

Chris (NY)

Is Vereen's high projection due to expected garbage time against the Bills?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Probably.

Next Man Up (AZ)

If Nicks misses the game this week, would you place the highest value on Hixon?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

After Salsa man, yeah.

Steve (NJ)

If Goodson can give a go this week, where would he be ranked?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Where Reece is, around 30 at RB, and move Reece backward.

Peter (Vermont)

Buy low on D. Murray and hope he gets back soon?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

I don't expect to see him anytime soon.

Eric (CO)

Why do you remain relatively high on Britt? He's not doing much. Do you expect a breakout as he'll be getting Locker back soon?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

I wouldn't say I'm high on him, as he didn't make my top 30 WR. But sure, in theory the return of Locker helps. Better arm.

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is about all for the time we have today, so I thank you for the interest and the questions and hope you enjoy your day! Good luck in Week 10 and beyond!
