Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

Hi everyone. Hope you're well. Let's see what's going on...

Patrick (Houston)

Assuming that the Texans actually activate Sharpton in the coming weeks, is there any chance he moves into the starting ILB spot before the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Texans don't pull veterans very easily. But I think he could be an upgrade, at least in a package.

John (Houston)

Mercilus has 3 sacks in 2 games and the other OLBs are starting to step their game up. As well as Andre and the offense. I hope this is them really starting to catch fire for playoffs

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Little early to catch fire for the playoffs.

Casey (Los Angeles)

Why is Owen Daniels ahead of Cookie in your All AFC roster? (Please don't tell me it's because he's a more complete Tight end.)

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Because he's been better to this point.

JayKay (H-Town)

I agree with your AFC South selections. A little surprised Brooks Reed made it, but there's really no other OLB in the division. How much consideration did you give Kareem Jackson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

He's much improved. But I wouldn't take him ahead of a healthy Cox or Alterraun Verner.

its (game time)

will you be at the texans-bears game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

I will be.

Kyle (Indy)

The Colts are defying all expectations. Much credit must be given Arians. Do you think he stays around long as OC or will he be on the short list of coordinators that are sought for head coaching positions in the future? Think he would take a HC position and leave a promising future with Luck and the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

Hard to turn down an offer to be a head coach. And the thing everyone is usually looking for is a coach that can develop a young QB.

its (game time)

most important for the texans to win against the bears? is it running the ball well? no turnovers? rushing cutler?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

Don't let Chicago score on defense.

Devin (Glenn Dale, Md)

What's up with Blaine Gabbert looking more comfortable without MJD? We saw it in the preseason and again in the last few games.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

I wouldn't read a lot into it.

Young (Indy)

Do the colts need to look for a right tackle next offseason? I know Winston Justice has been injured a little to frequently, but he seems to be doing better than most or I would have thought

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

Good in pass protection. But they can and should upgrade.

Blueman (Indy)

Paul do you hate the Thursday night games as much as I do?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

I have kind of a love-hate relationship with them. I do like having football on TV on Thursday night. It allows me to see an additional game. But there is a great deal of downside -- it's too quick a turnaround for the teams playing.

Zach (Nashville)

How do you see the coaching staff for the Titans changing going forward after the season is over?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

It's complicated. I could see two new coordinators. But in order to hire quality new people, you have to give them security. And to give them security they need to be linked to a head coach who's got security. And Munchak's only got one year left on his contract. I don't see Munchak losing his job. O he may get an extension.

Casey (Los Angeles)

Better corner at this point: Alterraun or McCourty?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

Pretty close.

Brian (Nashville)

The whole Jake Locker experience, to me, was handled wrong. I don't see the rush to start a QB when you went 9-7 with Hasselbeck last year. I refer to Aaron Rodgers sitting behind Brett Favre and to me with Matt actually liking to Mentor unlike Favre did, it would've been beneficial to give Matt One more year. Once Again, they're rushing him to play this weekend instead of waiting till after the Bye week. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

I don't see where it was a rush. If they thought he was ready, why slow it down? Locker is far more game ready in Year 2 than Rodgers was, and Hasselbeck is hardly Favre. And if he's been cleared to play, where is this rule that he has to sit because there is a bye coming? Should ever injured player rest the game before the bye?

IndyFanColts (Coltsland)

This might sound like crazy talk, but B.Arians COY race?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

Right now I think Pagano/Arians would get a lot of votes. And be worthy of them.

Blueman (Indy)

I know CBA limits practice time,is Tue. a mandatory off day or is that a team schedule?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

One day off is mandated. Very rare for a team on a regular Sunday schedule not to make it Tuesday.

Dan (AZ)

Should we see more pass rush out of Ayers? He seems to at least be getting pressure...

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

He's been good in his chances lately. A shame they need him, considering investments in Wimbley and Morgan.

sergio (mexico)

with half of the seson gone already, was it a mistake not to retain J. Saturday in Indy??? was a mistake on his part to walk??

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

He's getting pushed around with Green Bay. Colts wanted to get bigger, I have no issue with them moving a different direction.

Young (Indy)

Jaguars are sure to game plan a heavy run scheme against the colts tonight, but with a banged up indy secondary do you possibly see them letting Gabbert TRY and throw all over us?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

If they don't try to air it out tonight, they never will. And I fear they never will. So conservative.

Kevin (RVA)

More likely to be cut in the offseason, Michael Griffin or CJ1k?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

CJ. He's got $9 million that becomes guaranteed.

Steve (Longview, TX)

With the Titans trailing early last week, you tweeted abandon the run. But, its obvious Hasselbeck can't throw over 20 yards.. Why not bring in Rusty and @ least chunk it down the field?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

Why do people think Rusty Smith is good?

Casey (Los Angeles)

Titans in wait and see mode with Britt and an extension?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Absolutely. He's not getting a deal ahead of free agency unless he really settled down next season.

Casey (Los Angeles)

Hey, Paul, I watch the Titans interviews on their website, and I occasionally hear you in the background. I've gotta ask, who's the best current Titan to interview? pre- or post-game.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Hasselbeck is the best guy to talk to on the team, by miles. And probably tops in the division.

Doug (MD)

If you are the Colts, would you go after Bowe in the off season? Are there any other receivers entering FA you would go for instead?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

I'm not studying who's going to be a free agent around the league after the season. Too soon, sorry. Bowe has baggage. Name receivers beyond Plaxico Burress who changed teams in free agency and were better with their new team?

Blueman (Indy)

Colts will be missing both starting CBs and Mathis if he plays will be limited. So with a weak secondery and little pass rush if B.Gabbert can't have a good game tonight is there no hope for him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

It's fair to say it's a big game for him. But if his coaches put handcuffs on and max protect, it won't be entirely his fault if he doesn't do well.

Urahara Kisuke (hueco mundo)

should tennessee consider trading cj after the season

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

Who's trading to pay him $9 million guaranteed in 2013? No one.

Nostradamus (Prediction Machine, Everywhere)

The game tonight in Florida will be undecided!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

Funny.

Matt Hasselbeck (Nashville)

What's the chance I get my ridiculous fine appealed? I did not violently hit anyone.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

I don't think there is an measurement of violence in the determination of a horse collar tackle. If it is one, it is one. But first-time offender in a non-violent tackle, maybe he has a case.

Jon (Woods)

What are Tennessee's chances of stacking 8 in the box to stop Bush and doing enough to shut down Tannehill and the lack of receiving talent in Miami?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

I don't give this Titans defense a good chance ot stopping anyone. It likes to give up 30.

Dan (TN)

Receivers changing teams that are better with new team, heard of Nate Washington?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

Good one, right in front of my eyes. Took a few year, however. But yes. So we have two. Out of 100s. Keep going.

HG (OBORO,KY)

When Titans get behind by a couple of scores why do they continue to run conventional Offense. They're efficient in 2 minute and no huddle, plus Cook gets more involved.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

Great question. I don't know.

Craig (Indy)

I think the only way to make Thursday games work is if they only happen the week after a team's bye. That would reduce the risk of injury. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

Nice idea, but probably logistically impossible. This is how it will be.

Jon (Woods)

Any thoughts on the Titans latest roster moves?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

DeVan is the new depth behind Kevin Matthews at guard with Harris gone. He's been on and off the team several times. They view the DE as an upgrade on Egboh.

Casey (Los Angeles)

What's the early word on Kendall Wright. Future Boom? Future Bust?Or something in between?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

Looks pretty good. I await the big catch and run. But he's a big third-down receiver which is a big deal for a rookie.

IndyFanColts (Coltsland)

Colts seem high on rookie NT Chapman, do you think he can make a difference for then in 2nd half of season, esp against the run?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

I don't know. It's very hard to give you a prediction n a guy who didn't practice in camp and only practices behind the scenes now.

Dwight Mann (TX)

Whitney Mercilus is a 1st round pick and seems to make a big play whenever the Texans give him time - which has been limited to this point. How much more does he need to do to become a starter? Should they start him??

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

You want to sit Brooks Reed or Connor Barwin? Seriously?

Jim (Italy)

If Khan does let Smith go in the offseason, do the Jags have either an internal candidate or a consultant type option to buy a year or so to evaluate Mularkey and (maybe) Gabbert, or would they be more or less locked into giving a new GM (or HC\GM, or whatever) free reign?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

Sorry, but I hate the idea.

Steve (Longview, TX)

Hasselbeck has more turnovers then any other QB since 2007, why not let a less talented Smith come in? Could he do worse?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

Could and would, yes.

Blueman (Indy)

It seems you don't do the mailbag articles very often,is this lack of quality questions, lack of views to it when you do it or just plain not something that you like doing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

A and C. They almost always produce lively discussion. But often it's largely about how bad the questions are.

Young (Indy)

Is Jerry Hughes play so far this season warrant a new contract(i think his rookie deal is up)? His stats arent great but we have seen improvement and he has had decent pressure on qb. Or should we let the bust go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

He's under contract for two more years. They have other concerns that outrank him, though they'll have to decide if he can start if Freeney's gone. And I think Freeneey will be gone.

Patrick (Nashville)

Not sure but have you done a biggest disappointment/surprise for the afc souths teams yet or going to?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

There may be midseason awards coming this afternoon.

Kirk (Orlando)

Where are the Jaguars lacking talent the most, WR or OL?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

OL and DE.

Craig (Indy)

People are now really starting to talk about how the colts are a playoff team. I am a huge fan, but let's keep things in perspective. The last 3 teams we have faced really aren't playoff caliber teams. And the Colts schedule gets a lot harder the rest of the season. What do you think, realistically, are the chances that the colts sneak in to the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

I think they have a realistic chance to do more than sneak in. The AFC stinks.

will (murfreesboro)

Im originally from Ohio, close to Mount Union college. Do you think Cecil Shorts has big game tonight?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

I don't know if he will, but I think for the Jaguars to pull an upset he has to.

Corey (Fantasy Land)

Just one update about tonights RB situation in Indy! C'mon Man!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

Here's a big hint: If I don't answer, it's not because I'm withholding info, it's because I don't have any! Inactives come out 90 minutes before kick. You'll know Brown's status and who's starting then.

Young Houston Wide Receiver (Bench)

Any chance any of us get a chance to make a play this week? Seems like we've had a few early season drops and Coach gave up on us.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

Maybe. But I am baffled by the push for young and unproven -- these WRs, Rusty Smith, even Whitney Mercilus -- over proven people in front of them.

Seth (Indy)

What do you think of the Colts chances of overtaking the Texans in the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

Not happening.

Blueman (Indy)

As a Colt fan is it wrong that I feal the need to cheer on the Texans?Logic says the sooner the Texans clinch the less likely they are to go 100% against the Colts which would improve playoff chances for the Colts.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

Makes sense. Plus catching them is highly unlikely.

brandon (upstate)

do the titans intend on using tommie campbell in the slot at any point? or if hes more comfortable outside, moving alterraun inside? when do you expect that mouton is no longer relied upon?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

Campbell is strictly an outside guy. And based on the fact he's not been out there tells me they have no faith in him. You'll see Mouton or Sensabaugh as the nickel.

Young Houston Wide Receiver (Bench)

We were brought/kept here for a reason and we've shown flashes. Surely that reason isn't special teams.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

Can't you be guys they want to develop and use long term or when needed? Who should be ahead of, say, Kevin Walter? Keshawn Martin? Don't see Kubiak doing it.

Casey (Los Angeles)

What was the early word on Locker's development before he got hurt?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

Mostly positive.

Bob (FL)

Paul are you related to Blueman from Indy? You've answered about five of his questions. I'm just sayin....

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

I answer the best questions about which I have something to say. If he's having a great day, kudos to him. I hardly look at names.

Casey (Los Angeles)

More responsible for CJ's improvement: CJ's running or improvement in the offensive line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

I think a change in mindset that's put Craig Stevens on the field more or Quinn Johnson with him in that diamond formation. O-line isn't being asked to get to the second level. Hold your block, let Stevens or Johnson lead and pick off the fist backer. That's worked.

brandon (upstate)

lets be serious, with hasselbeck in vs the bears. we have no hope of overcoming 28-2. at least rusty smith can put the ball downfield and let the titans big weapons make plays, no?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

So you think Smith is a hidden weapon who's big arm would have somehow completed frequent deep balls against a great defense basically playing prevent? I'm sorry, that's pretty much delusional.

Jerry (Coach's Box (of shame))

I'm thinking about running a 4-2-5 base defense. Keep Ayers on the line, McCarthy and Brown at backer, and our starting four DBs with RoJo as a 3rd safety a la NY Giants. Am I crazy? Is it worth a shot?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:43 PM)

So who's out among the ends to make room for Ayers?

RootPeench (Austin)

Why on earth did you pick Luck over Schaub where Schaub in just about every category is superior to Luck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

If you want a stats list, ESPN.com has those for you all the time. Performance isn't measured strictly by numbers. There is a lot of context. Schaub's played very well, but he's on a great team and hasn't had to carry it or bring it back. Meanwhile Luck is making a bunch of average linemen and rookie pass catchers into a team. Lots of value in that. I'm not punishing Schaub for being on a great team. I am rewarding Luck for helping forge one.

Steve (Longview, TX)

What team has the best spread of food in the press-box?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

New England is excellent.

Blueman (Indy)

Is it to soon to call the Vontae Davis trade a mistake? He has been hurt but even when health has not looked like a guy worth a 2nd rd pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

Way too soon.

Uncle Sam (USA USA USA)

PK, I do declare that if thou didst not complete one's civic duty to vote, thou shant be in my good graces. So did thoust vote?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

I voted.

mike (charlotte)

i changed my name to Blueman from Indy to see if you would answer my questions.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

And I don't even know what happened because I do not keep track of whose questions I am taking.

RC (Toronto)

PK, love the blog, keep up the good work. There was an insider piece out about the 2013 draft...where do you see the colts biggest needs heading into next years draft, CB, OL or DL?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

OL or DE.

Blueman (Indy)

Do you see Freeney continuing to be productive if he leaves Indy next season and for how many more years?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

I don't think he'll be in Indy next year. Right situation and motivation, he's not done.

HG (OBORO,KY)

Regarding T. Campbell. Why do coaches pump them up in preseason, then they sit,,(Egboh as well). Just say, "he sucks" or "we don't think he'll be in the rotation."

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

Great question. Part of it with Campbell was that Mouton was coming back off injury in camp. But they wasted a lot of snaps on Tommie.

RootPeench (Austin)

Schaub is working with half a brand new offensive line and doesn't have Reggie Wayne WR who is leading the NFL in yards. Plus Schaub has more TD and half the INT and is able to put away teams before the 4th quarter, unlike Luck. Oh and Luck is probably the worst QB on the road so far in the entire NFL. Looks like you put Luck in for no logical reason or did you just want to attract web page hits?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

Ask around to the regulars. I think they will tell you I do zero like pick a guy for a midseason team thinking "this will get me more hits." I've been more impressed with what Luck has done in his context than with what Schaub has done in his. It's that simple. My team. My choice.

Matt (Ashland)

I can see OL as a major need but we need something going on in our secondary. I guess Vontae has the potential to do well but couldn't we use a safety opposite Bethea before DE?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

They'll likely address something in free agency leaving fewer needs int he draft. They have a lot of them.

Justin (San Diego)

I know Bruce Arian is a lifelong assistant coach but do you think there is a chance the Colts lose BA to head coaching job after the job he has done this season? What are your thoughts on the effect if so?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:53 PM)

Yes, it could happen, and it would hurt a great deal. Perhaps Irsay could secure him with more money the way Bob McNair did with Wade Phillips last year.

Blueman's brother (Houston)

Did you see improvement in Houston's ST play this past week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

Yes. They did a much better job.

Blueman (Indy)

What are your thoughts on the post election political situation and where the country goes from here?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

I think extreme visions of both sides are ridiculous. Most of us are in the middle. Give those of us in the middle the government we need.

Brad (Orange Park, FL)

What do you think the Jaguars' reservation to throw the ball vertically down the field ultimately stems from?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:56 PM)

Potential for bad protection and inability of receivers to separate and the resulting fear of coaches.

RootPeench (Austin)

Sorry Paul for that last question of mine. It was pretty ignorant.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

See, I honestly don't even remember what it was.

brandon (upstate)

do you agree that mouton has stunk his whole career? just sayin. he fumbled like 3 punt returns his rookie year. he gets punished on third down by opposing qbs. sensabaugh played a lot in the slot vs chicago, munchak said it was matchup based. do you get the feeling that he'll be given that opportunity in the coming weeks?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

I do not think he's good. I think he got hit too hard for what he did against Reggie Wayne. He was right there a couple times and Wayne made ridiculous snatches of balls in tight quarters.

Devin (Glenn Dale, md)

Could another two weak positions in Jacksonville be head coach and GM?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

Sure.

Mike (League City TX)

What are the chances of Barwin not resigning next year given the Texans Cap issues especially if Wade keeps increasing Mercilus' playing time. We have many free agents coming this year? Thanks for the chat.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

It's good to have three. They'd like to have three. If he leaves, they'll draft another one, I bet. But sure, if Barwin goes they can survive it.

RC (Toronto)

After focusing on offense in their last draft, do you see the Colts using their first 4 picks on D this year? I see OL as a major need. they need to a better job of protecting luck

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:00 PM)

You want me to predict what they will do with their first four picks IN APRIL? I predict they won't go into the draft saying, "We've got to take defensive players with our first four picks."

Young (Indy)

Do you consider it better for a team trying to fix an OL to pick up proven free agents or draft? It seems it takes a couple yrs for OLineman to completely develop

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

Plenty of good linemen develop quickly enough soon enough.

Doug (MD)

Grigon GM of the year over Elway?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:02 PM)

Rick Smith should be a candidate too.

Ben (Louisa, KY)

What are the odds the Titans cut ways with CJ1k?--you have already said he has no trade value, but is that a viable option for them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:02 PM)

I think he's cut in early March or not cut in early March -- that's when $9 million of his $10 million base gets locked in as guaranteed. I think those are the two options.

last question (Internet)

Favorite beverage?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:04 PM)

Coke Zero.

GOP (Not the white house)

How about a Kuharsky/Finley ticket??

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:05 PM)

I'll check with him on a potential platform!

Ed Hochuli (Chat Ref)

*blows whistle* END OF REGULATION!

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:06 PM)

Thanks Ed. See you all soon. Enjoy the game tonight.
