Matt Fortuna
  (1:59 PM)

Howdy!

Matt Fortuna
  (1:59 PM)

A Boston trip awaits. Does 10-0 for the Irish? Likely. What's on your minds?

sam (springfield)

how much did the pitt game hurt our title chanches

Matt Fortuna
  (2:01 PM)

Sam, it probbbbably didn't affect much either way. Notre Dame still likely needs two of the three-team group of Bama, Oregon and KSU to lose in order for the Irish to get into the title game. That was the case before, and it is now. I do wonder if it came down to ND and KSU for the last spot how much that Pitt game could haunt them, though.

Steve (Ohio)

Hey Matt, You see a blowout coming? 41-10?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:02 PM)

Yes. Wouldn't be surprised it it gets uglier than that.

Jose (Brazil)

What do you (honestly) think are the chances of an undefeated Notre Dame team not going to the title game?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:05 PM)

Chances of not getting in? Very good, unless two teams ahead of them lose. That's very possible, and all have their flaws, but we'll see.

Nick (Texas)

Matt, if all 4 undefeated teams stay undefeated for the rest of the year, what needs to happen, if anything, to have the Irish in Miami on January 7th?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:06 PM)

They'd have to get their hands on a lot of tickets.

Dan (Lexington)

Why is Notre Dame always so over rated. They should have lost to a Pitt team that gave up 45 points in a loss to Louisville and gave up 34 pts in a loss to Cincy. But yet perception of the Big East continues to be disrespected. I feel there is more parity in college football then people want to admit.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:07 PM)

Dan, Notre Dame is undefeated and ranked FOURTH in the country. The Irish have NOT LOST A GAME. They are the furthest thing from overrated this year. And yes, there is plenty of parity in college football. Just look at the Boise States of the world. Better yet, look at the "disrespected" Big East, which has had TWO perfect seasons ruined by MAC teams.

Stephen (New Rochelle)

Hi Matt,I'm sorry, but BC leaves me looking ahead... way ahead. Who is your prediction for taking the first snap at QB in the 2014 season? Yes, 2014.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:10 PM)

I'm looking ahead this week ... but not thattt far. Um, let's see. Rees will likely be gone, there's a chance Hendrix will be too. Golson will be a RS JR, Gunner a RS SO and Zaire a RS frosh. Hmm ...

Matt Fortuna
  (2:10 PM)

I say fifth-year senior Louis Nix comes in in the Wildcat package after years of begging and finally convincing BK to install it.

Skyler (Indiana)

Matt, Do you think that Kelly reels Golson back in this week and gets him back to throwning first? Golson has alot of talent running the ball but run first QB's never make it a full season and takes the ball away from other talent in skill positions

Matt Fortuna
  (2:12 PM)

My gameplan for Saturday would be simple: Run, run, run ... and run some more. (With RBs, of course.) ND will have a field day on the ground against this D.

Rob (Appleton, WI)

Do you think a strong defensive perfromance this weekend will motivate the Eagles to bring Bob Diaco in for an interview? (Can't imagine Spaz gets another year at the helm.)

Matt Fortuna
  (2:15 PM)

Rob, interesting scenario that I have yet to come across. I'd be surprised if Diaco doesn't get some looks after this year. Had not thought of BC, though that could be a possibility.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:15 PM)

(He could slug it out with former OC Charley Molnar at UMass for some recruits.)

Will (South Bend, IN)

Why have the Irish struggled so mightly at Irish Stadium, yet played so lights out on the road? Oklahoma and Michigan St. are not pushovers, yet ND dominated them. What's the deal?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:17 PM)

No one can or will say it publicly, but I'd imagine that having a ridiculous home weekend schedule can't exactly help.

Geoff (Cincinnati)

Hey Big Tuna, I have a strange feeling the luck continues... Johnny Football takes out Bama, and a concussed Klein sputters at TCU... Don't jinx it Tuna just agree..As far as a question itself, with ND's 2013 recruiting class nearly filled, how many more spots are left, 2-3?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:20 PM)

OK, I agree that a concussed Collin Klein who may not even be concussed will not play and his team will lose. (They may if he doesn't play. I think that Bama game will be closer than most expect, too.) As for your question, yes, that sounds about right, though a number of questions remain as it relates to who comes back/doesn't. (I'm looking at YOU, Zack Martin/Cierre Wood, in particular.)

Crazy Dave (The City, MI)

Which teams regularly on the schedule do you see as being the casualties of ND's agreement with the ACC?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:20 PM)

I think the B1G trio of UM/MSU/PU will suffer a bit, but I expect all to play regularly still, just not annually.

Pat Malatat (Beverly Hills, CA)

Out of the top 4 in the BCS who would be your prediction to play in the BCS Championship Game?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:21 PM)

Bama and Oregon.

Brian (Cincinnati, OH)

Hey Matt,Quick NC question:I have to wonder about the whole "conference championship" argument that every team gets another signature win over our schedule and that's one of the reason to get shut out of the title game. I know we can't this year, but is there a way to schedule a team during that week? The only teams I can see accepting are Independents because of their lack of a championship game. Is that allowed according to the NCAA?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:23 PM)

They can -- and tried -- to schedule Hawaii as a going-away present for Manti/Toma at the end of this season, but there were too many logistics to overcome. Hawaii and Temple are trying to do something similar now, since Temple has just 11 scheduled games this season.

Joey (Greensboro, NC)

Do the Irish have to be one of only two undefeated teams to make the BCS Championship?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:25 PM)

Excluding Louisville -- which trails two two-loss teams currently in the BCS standings -- probably. I do think if it comes down to ND and KSU for that third spot then the debate will rage much more heavily.

Mike (Las Vegas)

How much more of DaVaris Daniels do you think we will see in the next three games? Is it safe to say that he's going to be the go-to receiver in the future, much like Floyd or Tate was?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:26 PM)

I'm not going to say he will be Michael Floyd, but I do think he will emerge long-term as the go-to guy on offense. He's already among them just nine games into his career.

Brock (Washington, DC)

It's clear at this point that ND, is the weakest of the unbeaten teams left. Assuming they do win out - give my your best bowl projection and who they would face. Same thing if they lose to USC - bowl projection and who they would face.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:30 PM)

Weird as it sounds, that USC game may not end up weighing much in terms of bowl destination. (Of course, on game day it will, with Bama and Oregon likely in conference title games the following week with national title berths on the line.) In any case, if ND doesn't make the national title game, I'm beginning to think a Rose Bowl berth is more and more possible. USC will have, at the very least, 3 losses, and there's a good chance Oregon State does too. If Oregon wins out and gets to the national title game then Stanford will have had a 3rd loss and the Rose Bowl may be looking for a replacement team for the Pac-12. ND/Nebraska on New Year's, anyone?

Andrew (Dallas, TX)

Hey Matt, I'm a BIG ND fan and am prone to bias as most fans are, but this BCS situation really seems unfair to me. I know all the teams in the top 4 are undefeated and deserving of a high rank, but based on their body of work I think ND is getting (bleep)ed here. #1 Alabama has played four teams with losing records and still have a 2 win Auburn team and 1 win FCS school on the schedule. #2 K-State has played 3 schools with 7 total wins between them and only faced 1 top 10 team (which ND beat by a larger margin of victory). #3 Oregon will play it's fourth team with 3 wins or less this weekend including an FCS school and has only played 3 ranked teams this year (none higher then 17). We beat 4 ranked teams (two in the top 10) and have faced two teams with losing records. ND is usually the victim of over-hype but this year it's under-hype! How do voters justify the rankings?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:32 PM)

Andrew, the BCS situation seems unfair because it is unfair, and eventually it will be gone, just not soon enough. That being said, ND has gotten plenty of breaks the other way because of this unfair system. I'm not justifying this year because I don't like it either, but everyone knows the rules and this is what everyone had signed up for.

Ryan (ohio)

what are Manti's chances for the heisman after PIT?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:33 PM)

He faced an uphill climb either way. I think he'll get a NY invite, which is still HUGE for a defensive player, and especially and inside LB.

Peter (Quahog)

Hi Matt,Regarding an earlier game, do you think Purdue's strict adherence to Mustache Culture is preventing them from getting the right guy?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:35 PM)

Winner.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Before the season started, when ND looked like an 8-4 team, all we heard was "they have the toughest schedule in the country." Now that they're undefeated, all we here is "overrated, didn't play anyone good." SO FRUSTRATING, SUCH GARBAGE

Matt Fortuna
  (2:37 PM)

No one is saying ND is overrated. Just that Alabama and Oregon, teams with proven track records that have combined to play in each of the last three title games, are both undefeated as well. Brian Kelly said so himself this week that he figured such a scenario would make it tough for ND because of those team's recent track records. KSU, on the other hand? That's a toss-up.

Barb (Chicago)

Hi Matt, How would title game losses by oregon and kstate play out in the bcs? Any change they get voted ahead of us for the title game, especially if USC is out of the top 25 when we beat them?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:38 PM)

I'd have a very, very tough time seeing that happen if ND is undefeated.

David (Chicago)

Im an Illinois fan thinking of making the jump and hoping on the ND bangwagon. Is this a safe jump? Is there room on board?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:39 PM)

Anything is safe from where you're currently standing in Champaign.

Brian (Raleigh)

Hi Matt! Can we rewind to BK's posst game presser? He was clearly, um, frustrated at some of the questions, and even snapped at the one reporter who was asking about Louis Nix vis a vis the flu. What was up with that?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:41 PM)

We learned that BK does not know about the chicken soup story, or doesn't care much for it.

Brian (Duncan Hall (BEST dorm on campus))

Just curious TUNA, If ND had been this good last year, would they have (partially) joined the ACC? Would being in the ACC this year have helped or hurt our title chances? ALSO, how can people say we still don't have the toughest schedule when Alabama is about to play WESTERN CAROLINA, and Oregon has only beaten 1 team in the BCS top 25!?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:43 PM)

Brian, if the ACC would've agreed to such a deal last year -- especially in light of the Big East's vulnerability with Cuse/Pitt/WVU leaving -- then sure, I can see them doing it. I'm not sure an ACC 5-game slate would help them all that much this year, though it obviously depends on opponents. ND essentially has 4 this year already with Miami, Pitt, BC and Wake.

TS (NC)

Do you think we're done seeing Rees after the INT last week?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:45 PM)

Not if Golson performs bad, though I do think he earned some more trust with the staff after this week.

Mike (Ottawa)

Understand that odds aren't good for ND making it into the National championship game without a couple of losses ahead of them, but a lot more worried about how likely it would be for a 1-loss SEC team to sneak ahead of an undefeated Irish. What are the odds a 1-loss Alabama finds themselves ranked higher than the Irish, if they (hypothetically) lose the SEC championship game?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:46 PM)

I say very unlikely, but I suppose crazier things have happened.

brad (Toledo Ohio)

Hey matt i will be attending manti's last home game against wake in your opinion what are your thoughts on what teo's legacy i guess for better word will mean to the university of notre dame there is a lot of history with this program where do you think he stacks up

Matt Fortuna
  (2:47 PM)

Brad, it will only grow with time, like most big players on big teams usually do. I'll say right now he's the most important ND player of the last 20 years, but I haven't been around long enough to weigh him against others.

Bill (South Bend, IN)

Let's say Oregon beats Stanford by 3 and ND beats USC by 20+. Why is ND still outside looking in? They'd have four common opponents with KSU and Oregon and in that scenario would have more impressive victories in all four. Why wouldn't that matter?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:50 PM)

College football is all about perception, Bill. Oregon won last year's Rose Bowl, was in the title game two years ago and was in the Rose Bowl the year before that. The Ducks play an attractive style that often leaves games out of doubt by halftime and allows them to coast with reserves late. Does this mean they are better/would beat ND? I'd give ND a shot against anyone, though I can't argue that the Irish are better right now. But Oregon gets the benefit of the doubt in the eyeball test, which for better or worse (I say worse) ultimately matters in a system like this one.

Chris (Raleigh)

Do you really believe ND can beat any of the teams in the top 8 besides Kansas State (w/o Klein)? They can't score and when they play a team with great defence not a ok defence (OK & MSU) they will get dominated. Pitt proved that last week. Do you think they would have come back on any of the teams in the top 10? NO!!!!! People have this mythological luster about ND but, let's be honest they are just like a Boise State that has a soft schedule and they beat on good team a year.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:53 PM)

Chris, you could not be more wrong. I'd give ND a good chance against anyone in the country, though that is not saying that the Irish are better than everyone. Alabama and Oregon, in particular, are teams I think are better/more complete than ND right now. Pitt didn't prove anything other than that this is a fluid sport played by 18-22 year olds who are prone to get hyped up and crash through the course of the season. ND wouldn't come back from 14 down in the fourth-quarter to beat a top-10 team because the Irish probably wouldn't play so poorly for three quarters against a top-10 team. A 9-0 team is not 9-0 on mythology, my friend.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:54 PM)

Have time for a few more, gang ...

Doug (Norfolk, VA)

Assuming ND is out of BCS Title Game and Oklahoma does not go to the Fiesta Bowl, why is everyone targeting the Fiesta Bowl for ND? Any chance for the other BCS games?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:54 PM)

Fiesta will get first at-large choice and ND is the most attractive option. Rose is possible, too, if Oregon goes to the national title game and the Pac-12 doesn't have another BCS-bowl eligible team.

David ((Iowa City))

Has Kelly commented about the possibility of going undefeated (again) and not making it to the national championship (again)?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:56 PM)

Kelly from his Tuesday press conference: "If you told me that Alabama and Oregon were also undefeated as well as Notre Dame, I would say, Well, there is a chance. Those are teams that have been here and done that. Notre Dame hasn't done it in a while. Those teams are undefeated, too. I would say, Well, there is a chance we may get left out."

Tim (Indy)

Would an ND-Bama national championship be the most watched game in college football history?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:56 PM)

Could we move the time up?

Al (NJ)

Hi Matt, why do Manti Teo and Everet Golson both wear #5 and why is it allowed? Never saw 2 players wear the same # anywhere.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:57 PM)

Duplicates are all over college, just on opposite sides of the ball. John David Booty and Brian Cushing stand out for me a few years ago.

Bill (San Francisco)

Can we just win the next three games and THEN complain about the system? These things usually take care of themselves.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:59 PM)

Voila, Bill.

RJ (OH)

"A 9-0 team is not 9-0 on mythology, my friend."So would you feel the same way about a 9-0 MAC team?

Matt Fortuna
  (2:59 PM)

I would feel that they got to 9-0 on the strength of their football team, yes, not on some miracle.

Matt Fortuna
  (2:59 PM)

All from me today, folks. Anyone making the trip to Boston? See y'all around town. Enjoy the weekend.
