Greetings and salutations my friends! Let's chat!
Is Teddy Bridgewater the best QB in the Big East?
Starting with softballs, I love it!Yes.
Is UCF the best mid major? No one has played them close of late.
Any word on Big East televsion negotiations? When do you think we may hear something? What are your expectatons?
I do not know of a timetable, just that the Big East is free to negotiate with whomever it chooses. My expectation is the Big East will get a nice deal, but not more than the ACC.
Best chance for a Syracuse win? Home vs. Louisville or on the road at Missouri?
Better chance to beat Louisville. Syracuse has been terrible on the road.
AA-I may have been naive in believing in my cards (over the years)- but one of the best things I have seen this year- is how competitive college football is all across. Although the big east got more than a little hurt with losses and pieces shifting- I would rather see dogfights and competition over juggernaut beatings. I love wins, but I love the game even more. I think Louisville can hang with a lot more teams than people think- it seems when they get challenged, that they have the leadership and skills to come back with the right hook. Really excited to see what next year brings all across!
That is one thing we have seen from Louisville -- this team just refuses to quit. There is something special about watching them come back in the fourth quarter. Can Louisville beat every team ahead of it in the rankings? I am not sure about that.
Hey Andrea, I can come back now that USF won. Granted I may be gone again next week. Was really sad to see BJ go down as was a bit of the heart and soul of USF. But now we must look forward, so what do you think about the current USF situation. Will Evalds redshirt stay on? Will we simply try and train Flood for a future that may not happen next year?
I feel for B.J. as well. For those who only know about him playing football, he was always a treat to deal with from a media perspective and one of the nicest student-athletes I have interviewed. That should count for something. Skip Holtz said he is getting Floyd and Eveld ready to play and has to consider the possibility of burning Eveld's redshirt. If they stick with Floyd and he can make it through the final 3 games taking all the snaps, that would be ideal. But we are talking about the QB position, and nothing is ever guaranteed. This is going to be trial by fire, no question. I think USF takes a huge loss from the heart and leadership standpoint without BJ. How will the offense function now without B.J. and Lindsey Lamar? I am not overly optimistic.
Assuming you agree with this... can you try to tell Bearcat fans to back away from the ledge. We are 6-2 in what (at least on paper) should be a rebuilding year. But it seems like people think the season is a train wreck. Our two losses are by a whopping 9 points to a good Toledo team and the #10 team in the nation. Help stop this absurd mania!!!
Funny you mention that. I would take it one step further and say this could be Butch's best coaching job when you consider everything he lost headed into this year. UC fans know better than anyone that outsiders like myself thought this would be a rebuilding year. I like that UC fans expect the world, that means expectations have been sufficiently raised. But given the losses from a year ago, shaky QB play, losing Walt Stewart and now ? depth in the secondary, to see this team at 6-2 says something about the job Butch has done.
Outside of Bridgewater who is having a great year George Winn is the best offensive player in the Big East...right?
Teddy, then Georgie.
Acc fan here
You're back ... and in the wrong chat!
Hi Big Guns! I think 2013 could be one of the best years (if not THE best) in the Big East since Miami, VT, BC left. We could have multiple highly ranked teams. What say you?
Don't we have a few games left in 2012? Let's enjoy them before we start thinking about '13. I have 6 new teams I have to study and analyze before I make such pronouncements!
Who would AA start this week? Munchie or Kay?
When I get paid $2 million a year to coach, then I will make those decisions! I leave that one up to the man who gets paid the big bucks.
Hey Andrea hope all is well. I understand that the Ville and Rutgers game gas consistently been dubbed as the conference creme de la creme game. Do you think schedulers purposely set this up and do you see this style of scheduling will help the league in the future. I obviously feel its good to have your best teams face each other at the end of the season instead of hurting conference appeal by scheduling early. (Cough Cough ACC)
Yes, I do believe the Big East scheduled that game for the regular-season finale on national TV on purpose because it seemed pretty clear going into the season that one most likely determine the BE champ. Since the BE has no conference championship game this year, this is like their equivalent.
Should USF fns be really worried, Skip is Horrible I said it not you. But now we lost BJ and really have no BACK UP QB. Saw today Woulard is making an offical visit to NC State this weekend. Having followed ECU I Can tell you he lef that program in a mess with no quailty players, basically left them bare. Thoughts?
Weren't you guys worried after Week 4? ECU is bowl bound this year, and one game behind UCF in the East so don't go counting down the Pirates. Arggggh. I don't know what the future holds for Skip, but I am not confident in how the final few games are going to play out without BJ.
what coaches are on the hot seat in the big east
Skip Holtz, Paul Pasqualoni, Doug Marrone.
Do you think Woulard will stay a USF commit after this disappointing season and the fact that he's making an official visit to NC State?
I have no idea. As a friendly reminder, because I have a bunch of recruiting questions today, our folks over at ESPN Recruiting Nation can get you a lot more information than me. I have the whole Big East season to cover. Recruiting will pick up on the blog in January!
Do you see Louisville going undefeated this year?
I am going to call it 75-25 right now.
For what its worth I don't make $2-mil per, but here are my thoughts. Since this is on the road I'd start Munchie but have Kay on standby for a quick hook if needed. I'd even play Kay some to keep him sharp. I'd take this approach because (I say this with sadness) on the road we don't have to worry about a small and classless segment of our fans who would boo Munchie on sight. Go 'Cats!
Interesting take. I think all 3 QBs are going to play, and not sure it is overly important who ends up starting for that reason.
Andrea...I live a couple of mins from West Point and had to hear it all week about how they took it to Air Force..Please tell Me RU is not going to lay an egg ala Kent State?? I really think this game is important in re-building Novas confidence. I fear that if we go conservative again, it will make us very susceptible to loss at Cincy and Pitt.. I know that carrot at the end of the season is hanging against Ville but I worry that if we don't see an improvement this week (esp having a bye week to work on things) we might not be playing for a BE crown vs. Ville.
I am anticipating a conservative game plan. I go into detail on this tomorrow, but Army is awful vs. the run. Given up 23 rushing TDs. To keep Army off the field, you should try to just run and take time off the clock. Now, I am not saying the passing game is going into a shell. I just don't anticipate Nova flinging it around 30 times. ... And let's remember Army is 2-7. Great win last week vs. AFA, but Rutgers is a better team and at home. It won't be easy, but I think Rutgers bounces back.
Will you be attending a game this weekend? If so, which one?
I will, and you will find out this weekend. ...
Afternoon Sunshine. Tell us how the New playoff is different than the old. Same bowls, Same teams, minus the BE and smaller schools, same sponsors. So how is this new and improved and better for ALL of College FB. Thanks
It's not. I have been saying that for a year!
Bearcats need a win this week to be bowl eligible. With the questions at quarterback do you see them defeating Temple, and becoming bowl eligible?
Yes I do, Kyle. Cincinnati is superior in the trenches and will win.
Heather D used italics when describing Rutgers in her ACC BCS ranking reaction post. I think this was done to trivialize Rutgers and make them sound inconsequential. Needless to say, the elitist mentality towards Rutgers, which happens to be a good team, is tiring year after year. Would you be my champion and challenge her to some type of debate about the best of the BE vs. the best of the ACC? Alternatively, an arm wrestling or eating competition would suffice.
Brian, I thought you were going to say mud wrestling. HD is a great friend, but I am not sure there would be much debate.Big East 4ACC 3Scoreboard.
UL needs to be on upset alert this weekend. I went to the UC-SU game this past weekend and I saw a Syracuse team that when it hits on all cylindars they can be very good. Problem is that doesn't happen enough (for them, I am a UC fan) But if they do watch out Louisville. Im I crazy to think this?
Nope. I was thisclose to picking Syracuse because I have seen those glimmers all season. Remember, I called them the best 0-2 team in the nation? If they cut out the dumb mistakes, they will be in this game until the end.
How about RU's helmets for this weekend? What kind of reception have they been receiving?
I love them, and have heard nothing but positives.
Hi Andrea! Long time reader, first time writing in........ Was wondering why so many AQ conferences are not seriously looking at East Carolina for membership. Is it the academics, lack of tradition in athletics, etc.? Would seem to be a good pick up for the Big East....What are your thoughts?
Big East is looking West, young man. Lots of teams in the East right now, they want to try and get another team to pair up with Boise State/San Diego State.
I was looking at the standings and just realized, if Louisville wins one more big east game, and Rutgers wins against Cincy next week, that final game becomes the unofficial Big East Championship game.
Or if they win all their games ...
ND 65 BC 0 Is that a fair score for sat night? I hope not I am going to be at the game! Maybe I will put a bag over my head!
BC's defense is bad, but not THAT BAD. Notre Dame's offense is ... not great.
How does the name Tommy Bowden sound as the next HC at USF?
Uhhhhh ??? You tell me.
Hey AA, how much will Louisville have to pay Strong to keep him from the Arkansas, Auburn, Tennessee or who knows even the Texas job?
Tom Jurich is on record saying he will pay whatever it takes to get Charlie to stay.
If Rutgers wins out in the Big East who do you think they will have in the Orange bowl?
How many Big East teams will make a bowl this year? What is the deal with the Belk bowl taking a conference usa team over a Big East team?
3-4 teams. The bowls that are left empty get to fill with an at-large of their choice.
I'm gonna do something a little unusual. I want to wish both Army and Rutgers good luck this weekend. With everything you guys have been through in the last couple weeks both teams simply getting on the field should be applauded. Both teams and their fans.... good luck and God speed. We are all with you in spirit!
Excellent comment, Bearcatvol. I agree wholeheartedly. (stands to applaud)
Follow up, will that be enough to keep him around?
I don't have an answer to that, and it would be unfair to really start speculating on whether he stays or goes when he has games left in the Big East and no job offer right now. I will say this. I think Charlie feels an incredible amount of loyalty to Tom Jurich. He really likes Louisville, and feels he is building something special there. Is that enough? We'll have to wait and see.
We're Rutgers fans, thinking about winning all the games is a one way ticket to jinxville.
I did anticipate 9-0 so ...
week after week it looks like syracuse might actually pull off the upset and they end up loosing as they cant stop beating themselves.... recruiting has been good and way better talent that cuse had for the terrible G RoB error... Marrone needs his 5th year dont you say? thats coming from a guy thats been waiting all these years and all we get is a 8-5 Pinstripe bowl victory ? Not sure why people think a change is needed this year 1 more year and then let him go
I tend to agree with you. I am not in the business of hiring and firing coaches, but the nonconference schedule was brutal this year.
AA, where did the 8 takeaways stat for Louisville come from in your weekly picks. All the stats I have found show 11 fumble recoveries and 7 interceptions making UofL the 2nd in takeaways behind Rutgers.
User error, Jason. I looked at the wrong column when typing up my predictions post. Louisville has seven turnovers this year, not takeaways. I have fixed the mistake, thanks to everybody who let me know.
Another correction: 8 turnovers.
Do you see WVU in the pinstripe bowl? I would think it would be a great story line, plus whoever the QB is, he will have a monster game against that terrible 'Eers d.
Dream game: West Virginia-Pitt
AA- I keep hearing from the talking heads how ND's offense isn't great. But when you look at the numbers, they are ranked ahead of Alabama and LSU and average more than 200ypg rushing. They do rank in the top half of the country overall, you know?
Mike wanted so badly for me to post this, he sent it in 6 times. I see your stats, but can you honestly sit here and tell me Notre Dame has a well-oiled machine on offense that can consistently move the ball down field and score?
Thanks, Bearcatvol. It has been tough for many people around here, and having a game this Saturday is a pleasant distraction.
What does Rutgers need to do against Army to get themselves ready and at the top of their game for the next 3 Big East games? Ps., just got our power back about 90 minutes ago after 10 nights of no heat and no water (well pump). Best wishes to the many who are still without power.
George, many blessings to you and your family and to all those out there getting hit by all this horrible weather! I am glad you finally have your power back. I just think Rutgers needs to get back in the win column, but in terms of areas to work on: Run D. I know Army likes to run the ball but getting some stops and managing the game there will be huge; Get Nova his confidence back; Jump start the running game to get more consistency going.
Whats crackin AA! I really like the cards chance to go undefeated now. I was a little skeptical early on but I like their chances. I know people are expecting this game to be close but I think Ville will run away with this one in the second half. In the Dome with no rain and no wind, Teddy can really do some damage. The Defense hasnt put a full game together yet but they seem to be getting better. Also have you heard anything about Lorenzo Mauldin's injury?
I am waiting on the defense to put a full game together, that is one of the big reasons I think Cuse will make this a tough game. I have not heard an update on Mauldin
I saw on stubhub that most tickets for the Rutgers v. Louisville game are in the neighborhood of $150. That's one hot ticket. Are you coming, AA? I'll buy you a Fat Darrel.
I won't know until the week of the game, so stay tuned.
Thanks. Louisville fans love your articles, and we were very surprised to see a mistake from the lovely AA.
I am not perfect. I know, total shock, right?
Hey AA, do you know who stole Syracuse's defense?More importantly, do you know how we can steal it back? I'm afraid 'Cuse doesn't have a shot against Louisville this weekend without a much improved defensive performance.
Great question, Jason. I was quite surprised to see the performance up front the last two weeks. Syracuse is going to need the DL to get a major push up front to have any shot in this game. Getting after Teddy B., knocking him down a few times and taking him out of his rhythm is a must.
Re: Mauldin, I follow him on Twitter and he last said he is on schedule and doing fine. Not sure he'll play again this year until the bowl game, though.
There is your update, I had not seen Charlie say anything of late.
I think this week, Army will get a heavy dose of Jaimeson and Huggins. Nova will probally pass the ball between 15-20 times. If the running game is dominating, then 12-17 passes.
Good prediction, I sense the same.
I heard a rumor that Eric LeGrand will be at the Rutgers-Army game. Can anyone confirm this?
He will be there. Tuna wrote about it this week. http://espn.go.com/blog/bigeast/post/_/id/38908/legrand-to-take-in-rutgers-army
I know this is an easy to lampoon post, but why in the world are we so bad? I knew we wern't going to have a great team this year, but we look like we have folded the tents completely. What gives?
It all starts up front. Clearly UConn misses Mike Ryan and Moe Petrus more than it thought it would but I don't think anybody anticipated for this group to be the worst in the BE. By far. UConn is a team that grinds games out and relies on its run game. It has not been able to do either. And I'm afraid the defense has just had too much on its shoulders to carry this team every week.
Do you think the rest of college football sees the Big East as a BCS farm league in football? Calling up coaches and schools once they've proved themselves valuable?
You can call it that. I like that analogy.
AA, Louisville sports writer Eric Crawford is reporting that Louisville OC Shawn Watson among the names surfacing at Auburn. What do you think are the odds that great staff at UofL will stay together going into 2013?
I try not to get into the business of speculation but I will say this -- it is fairly unusual for a successful coaching staff to stay together for 3 straight seasons. Shoot, having this staff together up until this point made Louisville an outlier this year. I will not be surprised if assistants garner more interest as Louisville continues to have success.
Why has there been no discussion about Rutgers' horrendous punting? Kent St. routinely had us pinned, and we had them on the 50 with 25 yard wobblers all game. Have you noticed how lousy the punting is, AA? Can you help us?
The punting is not as bad as you think, Brian. It was terrible in that game, no question, but Rutgers is right about average.
Boise State fan here trying to educate myself about the Big East.I wanted to let the Big East fans know most BSU fans are excited about joining your conference next year. Hope we can be competitive!
Welcome! Watch out for Louisville, Cincinnati and Rutgers.
We touched on it earlier about the new playoff. What if anything can the BE do? Can the NCAA step in to make it more inclusive? Will the 5 conferences just walk away from the NCAA if their hand is forced? Thought
The NCAA is not going to step in. They do not have any control over the bowl system. There has been talk for years and years about a separation but I am not sure that is going to happen, either. Conferences like the BE are just stuck, unfortunately. They need the bigger conferences and cannot break away themselves.
I'll admit I'm not a Cincinnati QB expert. in basic tearms what do each of the three headed qb monster do for the Bearcats.
Kay is the best passer; Munchie is the best runner; Luallen is the best "Wildcat" QB.
Why do people complain about UL playing lower caliber opponents while the everyone thinks that it's ok that SEC teams can do the same thing. To that Jordan guy who said he can come back now that USF has won. How about you just leave the blog? I hate fair weather fans.
I think the main reason is because the conference scheduling in the BE does not compare to the SEC conference scheduling; therefore people want to see the conferences like the BE play tougher noncon games to "prove" themselves.
At home against a better then expected Penn State squad?
Rutgers' receivers are mostly similar players. Big, decent speed, alright hands. Is getting Miles Shuler, a speed demon, more involved a key for this offense moving forward? It was nice to finally see that speed used on the field.
You would like to think that Rutgers would get all its playmakers involved! Speed is an intangible that must be utilized.
How awesome would it be for WVU to have to be stuck in a Big East bowl after leaving for the Big 12. One can only dream.
I think a lot of people are rooting for that to happen.
Well, FSU has a weak schedule on par with UofL's right now, and yet look at where they're ranked with a loss.Laundry, laundry, laundry.
Yeah right behind UL!
McIntyre2K7, not your fault that TCU and WVU left your schedule. And its a lousy break that USM, FIU and Kentucky are playing at record low levels. Its a shame that fact doesn't get out that you are only playing the hand delt you. NOT that you are trying to duck anyone.
Is there a chance that UC can make the BCS bowl in a 3 way tie with Rutgers and UL? My feeling is that there is a small possibility and here is why (assuming everyone wins every other game)UC plays Rutgers in 2 weeks. A loss there for Rutgers puts them back in the polls and pushes UC possibly past them or at least very close. Later in the year UL will play Rutgers and assume Rutgers wins that game. UL will drop in the polls and have no time to recover since it will be the last game of the year for them. Assuming that Cincinnati wins out they will be on a 5 game winning streak and will be hot in the polls. What's your take on that?
My take is that Cincinnati would have 2 losses and Louisville one, so I do not see how the Bearcats would finish ahead in the final BCS standings.
All right everyone, thanks for joining me today!! See you again next week!
