Chat with Sean Adams

Rolando (Austin)

Sean, What's your favorite memory of Darrell Royal?

Sean Adams
  (12:07 PM)

My favorite memory of DKR was his desire to help people in any way he could but was always very straightforward and honest in his communication. The "Royalisms" are pretty awesome as well. As a guy who has a quote for everything, he was right on the money with a phrase that would perfectly explain his thoughts.

Kenny (East Austin, TX)

I've listened to every minute of your show since DKR passed away. Are you ever going to talk about DKR in regards to integration?

Sean Adams
  (12:17 PM)

I have talked about it a lot over the course of time even when it was uncomfortable and when folks told me I shouldn't. I have always thought the dialogue was more important, so I talked about it. I don't think it prudent or fair to debase a man who was so loved in this city, this state and particularly at this university so that I can forward some personal agenda if I were to have one. When the subject comes up, I'm sure I will address it again and address it from a big-picture perspective. Texas, the South, the SWC and college football as a whole are part of that conversation.

Lance (Plano, TX)

How important was that win against Texas Tech?

Sean Adams
  (12:22 PM)

It was huge from a standpoint of validating and strengthening the wins over the two worst teams in the conference in Baylor and Kansas. It was also huge because this team needed confidence. They needed confidence so bad that I think they would have been in real jeopardy of losing both the Iowa State and TCU games because of the negative momentum that would have been present after a loss to Tech. A win on the road against a ranked team was huge.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Do you think the Horns finish with 10 wins this season after the big road win against Texas Tech?

Sean Adams
  (12:25 PM)

I've tried as hard as I can when asked this question and still can't build a case for the Longhorns to go to Kansas State and win that game based on a game and a half of pretty good play. Talk to me after the Iowa State and TCU games and I'll handicap their chances at K-State.

Cris (Brady, TX)

Did your opinion change about Texas Tech after the loss or did you think Texas just played well enough to win?

Sean Adams
  (12:29 PM)

Not at all. I like Texas Tech and love the direction they are going. I'm sure there are a few things they wish they could have back in that game, but I made this game way more about Texas. If we had lined up the 1 to 85 rosters of both schools, most would have said that the Texas team was better. They just were not playing that way. If Texas Tech can keep its staff together, they are going to be pretty good in the years to come.

Trent (Austin, TX)

Is the emotion of the week too much for Texas or does it help them against Iowa State?

Sean Adams
  (12:33 PM)

I love the emotion of this week. Two weeks ago, the tickets that were left over for this game were selling at half price. This game will help the team, the coaching staff and even the fan base engage more fully, and this team that has struggled with the 11 am starts will need it.

Brian (Austin)

What has been the reason there is such a big difference in the defense from the West Virginia game to the Tech game? Obviously the tackling is better and the spacing is a little more accurate...what changed after losing Jeffcoat and Hicks to make us better?

Sean Adams
  (12:39 PM)

First let me say that if you think the defense is playing well now, it would be really good if Hicks and Jeffcoat were there. With that said, the defense is coming along for the younger players, but the scheme is easier to read and decisions are coming quicker for guys in positions that have to make choices in split seconds in order for the defense to be successful.

Joe (Dallas)

I know Mack has asked Harsin to keep the trick plays to a minimum...but we haven't seen hardly any at all this season. Is this because our offense is efficient enough this year so we dont need to run them that often or are we just waiting to unload them for the right games (say K-State, TCU)?

Sean Adams
  (12:43 PM)

Come on, we saw the Statue of Liberty against Wyoming. Two things can happen when you run trick plays -- 1) you can be successful, and 2) you can send a message to your team that the only way you can win is to trick people. Texas needs to avoid the second message at all cost. They need to be able to punch people in the mouth and have success with a traditional offense. When they are comfortable and successful with that, then the trick plays will be more successful and more fun.

Omar (Edinburg )

Sean, What is Mack Brown's message to the team before tomorrow's game?

Sean Adams
  (12:46 PM)

I think he talks about the fact that the team has heard for most of the week about DKR's legacy. Now the team needs to help the seniors that have had a lot of highs and lows finish their legacy. It's never a bad thing for young people to think about the legacy they are leaving as well.

AJ (Austin)

Do you think Mike "Magic" Davis is Leaving after this season? Or does he stick around for his senior year?

Sean Adams
  (12:52 PM)

Obviously this is my opinion, but I think he is back at Texas next year. The offense that could come back in 2013 could be special. With Davis and Shipley at receiver when coupled with the RBs and Ash in his third season could be a nasty combo.

Stephen (Houston)

How bad does the loss to WVU look now?

Sean Adams
  (12:55 PM)

It looks really bad now and the media and fans are free to look at it as bad as we want. The team and the players cannot afford to look back at it at all. But yes, it does look bad. Both teams have been taken down a notch even though the Mountaineers needs to pull themselves out of a funk.

Todd (Austin)

What is your opinion of a possible Texas vs. A

Sean Adams
  (1:01 PM)

LOL, it depends on who you are talking about. I imagine the Aggies would love to play that game to get the taste out of their mouth from that loss last year. I do not see a reason why Texas would want to play such a game at all. Texas has scoreboard and if I worked at Texas, I'd rather have a game that gave my kids a better trip, different opponent and a bigger stage on the recruiting trail. Texas leads in that category based on last year's win. Now me personally, I would love it if we could see that matchup be played. It would probably be the game I looked forward to most besides the BCS championship game.

Ari (San Antonio, TX)

The Texas hoop team starts tonight, what do you think about the season even though they are young?

Sean Adams
  (1:03 PM)

Young is never an excuse anymore and if you need an example, watch Kentucky and Coach Cal. I really think this Texas team can be pretty good and I'm looking forward to seeing them play tonight.

Chris (Houston )

What play do we run out of the wishbone? I think Texas should stay in it for at least the first 3 downs

Sean Adams
  (1:04 PM)

I hope they actually run a play out of it as opposed to just lining up in it and them shifting to a regular set. But then again, I'm not responsible for beating Iowa State.

Sean Adams
  (1:05 PM)

Thank you for all of the great questions and I'll be back next week to get it going again.
