Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (3:40 PM)

Welcome to our late chat.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:41 PM)

We were trying to speak with Jerry Jones today and he wasn't made available. He received an award from the University of North Texas. At the end of his speech he put on a green jacket and said Lance Dunbar (a UNT alum) was gonna have a big game.

Rashad (Brooklyn NY)

Will Danny Coale and Matt Johnson get any Burn this year?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:43 PM)

The Cowboys like Matt Johnson and want him to remain on the active roster despite injuries to his hamstrings and back. The Cowboys believe Johnson is a playmaker and when he was practicing he showed the coaches some positive things. As far as Coale goes, he's on the practice squad and he won't get moved up this year.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Coldest Dallas Cowboys NFL Game that you have been to?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:45 PM)

One night last year I walked out of Cowboys Stadium and it was about 10 degrees. As far as on the road, I would say I've had a few cold games at Texas Stadium. Green Bay was pretty cold a few years ago.

victor (tx)

Do you think Dez has what it take to be an elite receiver?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:47 PM)

He's too inconsistent. I think Dez Bryant is a talented player, but to be a three-year veteran, he should be more accomplished than he is right now. Victor Cruz, Julio Jones and DeSean Jackson are better than him. I picked those three because they've played the Cowboys the last few years. But to answer the question about Dez being elite, I doubt it.

frank (Florida)

Who do you think is right in the Jerry/Jimmie beef?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:48 PM)

It's silly.Jerry Jones is the owner and he has three Super Bowl rings. You can say Jimmy Johnson built those teams and you would be right. I wonder if Jerry is envious of what Jimmy represents: He's a football man. Jerry isn't considered that and maybe he wants to be called that in addition to being called owner.

nate keyman (sioux falls)

when are see murray on the football field again & if dallas lose this game on sunday do see big changes coming up with the dallas cowboys this season calvin.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:52 PM)

Nate,I thought Murray would return for the Eagles game, but now, I'm starting to think he will return next week against Cleveland. The Cowboys want Murray to be 100 percent before returning. If Dallas loses, I think the season is over, but after what the Giants did, Super Bowl champs after a 9-7 season, it will give Jerry Jones hope his team can do it too.

Greg (Shelton)

Is Sean Payton a real possibility? Isnt he just going to resign with N.O.?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:54 PM)

I think Payton is going to remain with the Saints. It is interesting the two sides haven't reach an agreement on a new deal. If Payton could get out of the contract he would and maybe he goes to a place that will have an opening. Philadelphia, Kansas City, Cleveland and maybe the New York Jets could have job openings this spring. Dallas won't fire Jason Garrett, unless he goes 0-8 the rest of the way.

juanito juanito (chihuahua mexico)

for you, can doug free could play guard, have the talent to help the team ?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:56 PM)

I don't believe Free moving to guard is the answer. He's suited for tackle and while he's struggled there in 2012, moving him to another spot on the line isn't the answer. The solution for the Cowboys is to draft a guard in the first or second round. Mackenzy Bernadeau was inconsistent early in the season but he's been good of late. Nate Livings has had his struggles of late, but overall he's played well. Finding a center is an issue for the Cowboys. Not sure if Phil Costa is the long-term answer.

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Judging how this the team has performed so far, what do you think is the main area that has to improve in terms of positional players?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:58 PM)

Need to improve, ready, offensive and defensive lines. I wouldn't mind the Cowboys drafting a tight end in the third or fourth rounds either. Upgrades up front can only help the Cowboys. I wouldn't mind finding a pass rusher, an elite one, in the first round if Anthony Spencer goes elsewhere in free agency.

Jason (Orange, CT)

At this point, with the penalties, inconsistent play, clock mismanagemnt how is this not Garrett's fault. There is no chance this team is 3-5 if they had got Jim Harbaugh instead (or Sean Payton for that matter)

Calvin Watkins
  (3:59 PM)

It's easy to say that, Jason. Garrett has taken responsibility for the failings of his team, especially the penalties. But I'm not sure if Harbaugh or Payton can do much better. Sometimes you can have good coaching but the talent messes things up on the field.

Greg (Hamden)

What our the real odds Garrett gets fired, even with a really poor season. It seems like Jerry really likes him and believes he is the future?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:59 PM)

I don't believe Jason Garrett will get fired this year. Now if he doesn't make the postseason next year, then you have problems.

jamie (Arlington)

What do you think about Lance Dunbars Game?

Calvin Watkins
  (4:01 PM)

I do like Lance Dunbar. He's fast, shifty and can find holes. He just needs more playing time, I wondered if he should get the start over Felix Jones this week in Philly. Just based on what we've seen, Dunbar got more carries than Tanner and played pretty good. We'll see if Dunbar continues to get more carries than Tanner.

Carlton (Florida)

we need a big victory like over 40 points to get back into things, i say give romo the lead to take over

Calvin Watkins
  (4:02 PM)

I don't know about that. Romo has 13 interceptions and lost two fumbles. He's not somebody I want to win the game with. Romo has to get better at protecting the ball, we though this wasn't an issue last year, but he's regressed in this area. Romo is a good quarterback having a rough season. At this stage, I'm not sure if you want to rely on him to win big games for ya.

Stephon (Jersey)

Why dont the cowboys attack defenses more like they did in past years? it seems like they take what defense gives them.

Calvin Watkins
  (4:03 PM)

Good question. When you mean by attack, are you saying throw passes deep down field. If that's the case, Romo has struggled on deep balls this season. I'm not sure if Romo trusts the offensive line and his receivers to stretch the defense.

marty (grapevine, tx)

If the cowboys pull off a victory in Philadelphia, there schedule works in their advantage. Only team with winning record is the Steelers and we have them at home. This game is huge in the fact on a few teams had made playoffs at 3-6, but do you see them going on a winning streak if they beat the Eagles?

Calvin Watkins
  (4:07 PM)

Let's look at the schedule closely. The Eagles game on the road isn't easy and remember this same Eagles team swept them twice. Also, Cleveland is a win.Can the Cowboys stop RGIII? Twice?Beating Terence Newman and Pacman Jones should be easy in Cincy, right?Pittsburgh is gonna win on the road. New Orleans is coming here for a home game and they might be on a roll. The finale in DC is always fun. Not sure if the Cowboys can get to 10 wins, which is what they need to make the playoffs.

Dre (IND)

If his Career ended today do you think Jason Witten is a all time great Cowboy?

Calvin Watkins
  (4:08 PM)

I would say Witten is one of the all-time great Cowboys who played. The only negative on Witten is he's never won a title up until now.

Mike (miami)

Did jason Garrett Want Dez for his offense back when they drafted him or was that a jerry jones move?

Calvin Watkins
  (4:08 PM)

I've been told Garrett wanted Dez Bryant.

Nate (Garner NC)

Do you think Bruce Carter can be as good as Sean Lee? Just watching him this year he looks to be a better athlete than lee

Calvin Watkins
  (4:09 PM)

Bruce Carter is having a fantastic season, better than expected. It's not about being better than Sean Lee, but Carter is making plays with and without Lee on the field. The Cowboys have two solid young linebackers who will contribute for several years.

jl (b'ville)

who gets the start at the 3rd WR spot in philly??

Calvin Watkins
  (4:10 PM)

Kevin Ogletree will. Tony Romo trusts him and he's going to be out there. Now I would suspect Cole Beasley and Dwayne Harris get more snaps as well.

marty (grapevine, tx)

can Felix Jones give us the running game we need this weekend?

Calvin Watkins
  (4:10 PM)

Felix Jones had a few nice runs in the loss to Atlanta last week. But like everybody else on this team, consistency is an issue.

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

I think dallas would rather see dywane harris at slot reciever but i think they believe beasley would be more effective. What do you think?

Calvin Watkins
  (4:12 PM)

Beasley is better in the slot than Harris. But I like Harris' speed and it seems if given more snaps on offense he can make some plays. Cowboys have a talented group of receivers and they don't use them enough. It's hard to get everybody the ball, I get that, but Dez and Miles are playmakers. The Cowboys offense isn't designed to give one player the ball, but maybe it should be.

Morice (Virginia Beach, VA)

Would it be worth it for dallas to give spencer a new contract? I don't believe so solely on the fact that he's not a pass rusher and demarcus ware needs major help.

Calvin Watkins
  (4:15 PM)

Cowboys can't talk contract with Spencer right now. It's going to happen after the season, but Spencer's play is good. He's second on the team in sacks (3), tackles for loss (3) and tied for first in quarterback pressures (13). I would say the Cowboys should let Spencer go in free agency and see what the market dictates. Spencer might ask for an average of $8 million a season. Is that worth it to the Cowboys?

Calvin Watkins
  (4:15 PM)

Guys thanks for staying with me during the chat today. Let's talk next week.
