Chat with Brandon Oliver

steve (los eugeneles)

Will you answer more than 4 questions today? Or just mine, at least? Can/would/should the UO pony up the big bucks to keep CK in Eugene and out of the NFL? Like give him an extension worth 5-7 mil per year? Wouldn't it be well worth it?

Brandon Oliver
  (4:07 PM)

I answer the questions that come my way. I hope there are more than four this time around. I don't know how much they would be willing to spend and what would make sense financially.Kelly has taken the Ducks to never before seen levels and the Ducks could likely justify and salary he demanded. His success as the head man in Eugene has seen the Ducks in three straight BCS games and the Ducks play on national TV almost every week.TV executives know the draw the Ducks have and retailers across the country load up on Ducks' gear. The money the program generates makes offering Kelly whatever he wants to stay, would make a lot of sense for the school and the program. Of course, if Kelly demands 10 million a year, the Ducks will have to cut ties and try to build off of the momentum that Kelly has built in Eugene

BOB (Clevland, Ohio)

Ducks rule YEAH!!!!!!!!!!! Going to win against California

Brandon Oliver
  (4:10 PM)

They certainly rule the Pac-12, at least for now. If they finish the regular season undefeated and finish with a fourth straight league crown, they will officially rule...The Ducks are banged up on defense, especially up front, but Cal is a train wreck, so the Ducks should be ok. Cal is sneaky though. They smashed UCLA, they could have/should have beaten Ohio State in Columbus. If they are without Keenan Allen, the Bears probably have no shot. The Ducks just need to stay healthy and get out of Berkeley with a win.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Worst Oregon College Football game that was Played this season?

Brandon Oliver
  (4:15 PM)

It's tough to say, but as strange as it sounds, it may have been last week vs. USC. When your starters have only played the whole game once, it's tough to give a full grade to each game.Obviously, the Ducks offense was as good, if not better than it has ever been. USC's offense has three first-rounders playing pitch and catch, and do so on anyone and everyone. Regardless, giving up 51 points to anyone is disappointing, but doing so while scoring 62 against the Trojans in LA is forgivable.

Steve (T-town)

Any big name, top 10-20 ranked recruits that the Ducks have a good shot at?

Brandon Oliver
  (4:26 PM)

Top 10-20? Probably not. Top 100...yes.Max Redfield (No. 36) is much more likely than No. 32 Leon McQuay III to end up a Duck, but it will be tough to pull either.No. 62, Gareon Conley sounds like he could commit to the Ducks if they offer. He just has to visit to earn that offer.No. 79 Tarean Folston likes the Ducks a lot and is planning a visit. Folston has offers from everyone and to get a player from Florida of Folston's caliber, means that there are about 100 schools between Oregon and Cocoa, Fla, that he could choose over the Ducks. The Ducks are slowly building a lot of momentum in recruiting and things will likely take off as the season winds down.

Bill (Lincoln, NE)

Which team needs to win the OSU - Stanford game to better boost Duck's SOS?

Brandon Oliver
  (4:33 PM)

Great question...Both lost to Washington, but both are still holding a good bit of respect nationally. Stanford probably should have beaten Notre Dame...or at least had a shot at them in overtime. Both teams are very solid, but at this point, I would have to say Oregon State. Stanford may have more national respect based on the past two or three years, but the Beavers are much more talked about this year. Finishing the season with a road game against a (potentially) top 5 team with just one loss, would give the Ducks a big bang at the end of the year. USC beating Notre Dame is big too. The Ducks are clear of Notre Dame in the BCS, but if Notre Dame beats USC on the road, it would likely get a boost in the human polls. It is Notre Dame so you never can be sure what will happen. If UCLA can figure out how to beat USC and they finish 10-2, they would be firmly inside the top 10 entering the Pac-12 Championship Game, giving the Ducks wins against ranked opponents in four of their final five games, with the last two against top 10 teams.

Daniel (Pasadena)

Are you really not getting that many questions? Where are the Duck fans?

Brandon Oliver
  (4:39 PM)

Good question! It varies every (other) week. I prefer questions over staring at a blank screen so spread the word!

Chuck (Formerly of Sweetser Hall)

Why do you think DAT is getting so few touches? Barner has really outshined him.

Brandon Oliver
  (4:43 PM)

It's tough to say. It really seems like the Ducks are keeping him under wraps, and giving him the ball in the wrong spots. They basically have three running plays. Of the three, it seems like Thomas gets the ball in the wrong one every time.My guess is that Kelly is saving him for when they really need him. Daryle Hawkins can get it done vs the Pac-12, De'Anthony Thomas is the kind of guy you need to beat a Nick Saban defense.Barner has outshined him, but that is a good thing for the Ducks. Barner has met and probably exceeded the expectations of Duck fans everywhere.Thomas is still the biggest threat in college football, especially in the Ducks' offense. His time will come.

Daniel (Pasadena)

If it happens, how do you like Oregons chances against Bama? Is the O-line improved from last year? Could they handle Bama's D-line?

Brandon Oliver
  (4:50 PM)

I have debated this inside my crazy head a million times and I really don't have an answer. If the offensive line plays like they did against USC, the Ducks would likely hold up fine and be able to run the ball on Alabama...at least enough to open things up a little bit.If they stick with a core group and they continue to gel through the end of the season, I think they would hold up well. Bama is nasty on defense and Saban with a month to prepare is a scary thought for anybody.Of course, he has never seen an offense like Oregon's. Mariota is only a freshman, but he is already more calm than Darron Thomas ever was. His speed would probably be the biggest difference from the games against Auburn and LSU. Darron Thomas couldn't out run the defensive tackles on those two defenses. Mariota can run with, or even out run Bama's defensive backs.I want to see it. So does everyone else.

Daniel (Pasadena)

Are you allowed at practices?

Brandon Oliver
  (4:56 PM)

If you're from Pasadena, I live a lot closer to you than I do Eugene...Kelly has made it a policy to keep practices closed for the most part.

Jay (PDX)

If oregon continues to finish in the top 5 of the final BCS standings for this and next year, can we really expect them to start getting top 10 recruiting classes. Nike, I mean Oregon, has a lot to offer these kids...

Brandon Oliver
  (5:04 PM)

Doubtful...Location, location, location...The Ducks do what they do with who they have, and those are the right players for them. They will get some top guys and the occasional top-10 class, but it will never be the norm

Daniel (Pasadena)

What do you make of the USC game regarding the defense giving up 51 pts? bad day or was it USC being "on" that day?

Brandon Oliver
  (5:05 PM)

Oregon does that to everyone. USC's defense doesn't have the depth to stand up to a 60-minute assault like that.It was a little of both

Nate (K-Falls)

I think this team will run the table and play Alabama in the BCS NCG. That said, I think this would be overachieving. I think this team is 1 or 2 years from being as good as it can be. Your thoughts?

Brandon Oliver
  (5:07 PM)

I agree 100%. This team is still so young and a berth in the BCS title game would be slightly unexpected. The sky is the limit with the Ducks' program

Lenny (My Office)

Way too early to ask, but who gets the start at RB on opening day 2013? Can we expect Tyner to compete for it?

Brandon Oliver
  (5:12 PM)

My guess is Byron Marshall. Wilson and Tyner will both play a lot, but Marshall is the man for 2013.

Lenny (My Office)

Way too early to ask, but who gets the start at RB on opening day 2013? Can we expect Tyner to compete for it?

Brandon Oliver
  (5:27 PM)

Tyner will definitely compete, but Wilson will likely be the one to make the earlier impact. Once Tyner hits his stride, he could become one of the all-time great Oregon RB's
