What are the odds of OU getting to play Alabama in a BCS bowl game?
Actually very unlikely. If everything remains on track, OU would go the Fiesta, and Alabama, the Sugar. Perhaps if Bama was upset in the SEC title game, maybe the Fiesta would pick them up as an at-large. But there would be other viable candidates, like LSU, Florida and Texas A&M.
Which Bowl do you think OU will go to?
I outlined all the scenarios today on SoonerNation. If OU and K-State win out, Sooners likely will be back in the Fiesta Bowl. There's outside chances OU could end up in Rose or Sugar, if say K-State lost, among other things. The Cotton also is a strong possibility.
Any ideas why OU is allowing so many yards rushing to opposing teams? is it just the kind of defense Mike Stoops runs? or lack of talent up front ?
Combination of both. At times, OU was using 7 DBs against Baylor. It's hard to stop the run with that alignment. But there are no future NFL starters up front, either. That would help.
Happy Monday, Jake. Like seeing A&M doing well even though the experts have clearly forgotten they were a Big 12 team last year, but they don't forget that with MO.
It's becoming very evident that the move was a positive one for Texas A&M. They've proven they can compete in the SEC, and they are going to recruit like gangbusters because of it. I wonder if Missouri is rethinking its decision. Where are the Tigers going to recruit? Their rise the last five years was due in large part to their recruiting in TX. But they don't play there anymore.
Mr. Trotter. I was glad to see Tom Osbourne try to re-instate the OU-Nebraska game before he leaves. It was a travesty to watch the old Big 12 ruin the meaning of that game for college football fans.
Much of that blame actually falls on OU. When the Big 12 was first put together with the north and south divisions, Nebraska was open to playing the Big Red game every year. OU was not. That was the beginning of the end of the rivalry.
What do I have to do to get people to like me around here? I have 4 games left to turn my legacy around. HELP
Doubtful 4 games changes much. Landry's legacy will be worth evaluating in the coming month, though.
If another guard goes down. Could we see ikard play guard some and Ty at center.
Depends. Ideally, they would like to keep Ikard at center, and I'd think they'd be more inclined to move Daryl Williams to G, and insert Tyrus Thompson at tackle. But if Lane Johnson is not healthy, Williams has to stay at tackle, and I think they'd rather play Darlington than Farniok at this point. So in summation, yeah, that's an option.
According to David Ubben, he thinks if OU & Texas win out then Texas goes to a BCS Bowl. I don't see how that could be possible considering OU beat them by 40 and OU would be Co-Champions while UT wouldn't. His only argument is bowls will find any way to get UT-TAMU in a Bowl matchup. Do you think this is possible or is it more likely OU goes?
It's a great question. In that scenario, K-State would be 11-1, and OU and Texas would be 10-2. K-State would still go to the Fiesta as the Big 12 champ, so it would come down to what the Rose and Sugar wanted to do. Notre Dame would no longer be available because it would be in the title game, leaving the Rose to choose between OU and Texas to face Nebraska. Both games would be intriguing, but I think the Rose would ultimately go with OU because of the rivalry. But if it's Michigan or Wisconsin? The Rose could go with the Longhorns. Lots of other scenarios. But one reason why to cheer for K-State in three weeks against UT.
Do you see Landry getting drafted in April?
Yes. Probably early second round pick. Maybe higher.
Do you think Heupel will adjust any of his offensive philosophy's in the next year or 2 to complement Blake Bell's athleticism?
I think he has to. You're squandering a big threat if you're not running Bell at least 10 times a game. We'll see what Heupel does. They don't want to get Bell hurt. But the way Bell runs, he's more liable to do the hurting than the other way around.
Brad Edwards is saying an OU-TAMU Fiesta Bowl is likely. Given OU's defensive struggles against mobile QBs this year, how well do they match-up with Johnny Football, particularly at LB?
It seems pretty likely that, if everything else remains on track, that it would be OU vs. an SEC team in the Fiesta. Because of its win at Bama, A&M is a trendy pick. Plus College Station is closer to Glendale than say Gainesville. Johnny Football creates a lot of problems with his feet, and we saw with K-State, Notre Dame and Baylor, mobile QBs can give this defense problems. You would see a lot of Frank Shannon in that game.
how many spots does texas am have left in this class? already 29 commits
I have no idea. I do know that A&M is on the verge of putting together at Top 10 class.
OU recruiting. Way down, or will it come on closer to signing day?
OU tends to close well. Look at last year. I'd never heard of Gary Simon until two weeks before signing day. Now it looks like could be a starter next season. No question, this has not been OU's best recruiting effort. But there's still time to pull out a couple high-profile kids at the end.
Who wins this time around if OU and Texas were to play at this point in the season? Seems like they finally have things figured out in Austin.
I'd pick OU to cover whatever the spread ended up being.
Any of the three Wvu players leaving play and significant time?
That stuff started to come over Twitter just as this chat started. I'll have to go back and check it out. As long as WV has Geno Smith, Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin, they'll have a puncher's chance.
Is Damien Williams once again the starter, or will he be sharing carries with Brennan Clay here on out ?
Williams will probably get 50 percent of the carries. Clay 30 percent. Millard and Bell 20 percent. So, a little bit of a timeshare. Both backs ran well against Baylor.
Chances that OU drops at least one of their last three...?
I'd say 50/50.
W/ OSU saying they have 3 QB's available for this week, who in the heck does OU plan for? Do they go w/ whoever started against Texas Tech or do they prepare for 2 different types since 2/3 are stationary and Walsh is mobile even though he won't be as mobile now that he was reported to wearing a knee brace & is still not 100%.
I'd suggest OU prepare for Geno Smith and worry about OSU next week. I think the OSU QB situation will crystalize this week, since all 3 will be available with a week of practice behind them. If I were OSU, I'd go with Chelf. He's playing well for them.
If K-State and Oklahoma had a rematch who would win? If it's in Manhattan K-State wins I believe.
Agreed. K-State is really, really good. Unlike OU, they don't make mistakes, either.
If Kansas State does make the title game how would you see them doing? Alabama would have probably beaten them but why could they not beat Oregon or Notre Dame?
I'd like their chances against Notre Dame better than Oregon. The Ducks have so much speed. I don't know how K-State would keep up.
Sad to see Dominique Whaley on the sidelines after the great season he had last year b4 the injury. Have the coaches lost their confidence in him or is the injury still in his head?
He's just not the same player. Those ankle breaks are tough to recover from. It's a sad story.
Hey Jake, good to chat with ya again, I promise I'll be less hostile this time. Do you see WVU taking notes from the Baylor game and possibly ending their four game losing streak?
Ha, were you hostile last week? The key for WV is limiting OU's big plays, not doing anything horrible on special teams like they've done, and run the ball enough to stay two-dimensional. If OU comes out with that 7 DB alignment, it's crucial for WV that it runs the ball to Geno a chance.
Why is it that we have just stopped recruiting big time D tackles? It seems that OU is more focused around playmakers in offense. Shouldn't the recruiting focus on O-Line and D-Line more?
The skill positions were a big focus in the last class. I agree, they've got to go get some defensive tackles. They're hard to find sometimes. But it's a position OU needs to upgrade.
Random question I know but would there be any chance what the SEC, Pac-12, or Big 10 goes after Oklahoma or that Oklahoma seeks to be in one if those conferences? I would say the Big 12 is a great conference to be in right now.
The granting of TV rights pretty much sealed OU's fate in the Big 12. I don't think we'll see much conference realignment in the near future.
Do u think Tony Jefferson gets first team AP All-American this yr? I have no idea who the studs are at the position, nationally. TIA
I turned in my football writers defensive ballot last week, and had Jefferson on there. Very deserving.
Of the SEC teams available in a bowl, which is the best matchup for OU?
I'll rank them: 1. South Carolina, 2. Georgia, 3. Florida, 4. Texas A&M, 5. LSU, 6. Alabama.
who do you see stepping up next year on defense and becomes the next star for OU? or is their no one you for see?
Frank Shannon has a chance. The question is, how much will he play with Wort and Corey Nelson still around?
Is this a better offense next year, with the return of Evans, some depth on the line, experience at receiver and a different personality behind center?
A lot of firepower comes back offensively. Sooners really only lose Justin Brown, Lane Johnson and maybe Stills if he declares. Will hinge on Bell.
If you had to rank the order of loseable games would it be 1) WV 2) TCU 3) OSUSay that because TCU looked decent against KState and WV gets rolling it could go down to the wire but State at home seems like the least likely one we'll lose because it's at home even though they may be the best of the 3.
OSU is by far the best of the three, but they never play well in Norman. Then again, OU hasn't been that impressive this season in Norman, either. I'd probably go 1. WV, 2. OSU, 3. TCU
Does Bain (DT) commit to OU? If not, does OU get the upgrades needed at DT for next year?
Maquedius Bain? That would be a huge pickup. ESPN has him the No. 6 DT in the country. He's supposed to take his official Bedlam weekend.
What JUCO have you heard about that we're looking at for this yr?
DT Toby Johnson has been the big name. There's also Quincy Russell. I think OU would like to snag a JUCO DT. Otherwise, you're looking at Jordan Phillips and whoever at DT next season, which should scare you.
I'm sure this has already been mentioned but what are your thoughts about Stoops and Heupel changing up the offense a bit for Bell and utilize him like Colin Klein?
They're not going to take it that far. They want to get the ball in the hands of Saunders, Shepard, Stills, Metoyer -- But I think they have to figure out ways to utilize what Bell can do on the ground. QB draws, Zone read, and straight QB run game needs to be part of the attack.
Yes, Maquedius Bain. I think it could be another case of too little, too late in terms of OU's recruitment of him. But we need him badly. If we miss on him, does that then mean that OU has whiffed on the needed upgrade at DT for next year?
I wouldn't say that. There are some other guys out there. (Josh Augusta, No. 11 DT). But that's a position they need to come through. It needs an upgrade. The three best DTs on the roster all graduate.
Is the key to winning in Morgantown getting up early and putting even more doubt into WV heads? It seems like they are a boxer who is on the ropes and is one shot away from being out for the count but if they connect on one and get confidence then they have a punchers chance w/ the crowd getting in to it.
Yes, the worst thing you can do is hand them a 14-0 lead and allow them to believe they can win again.
Well we pretty much know how the rest of the year is gonna map out for the sooners this year, and as much of a landry fan I've been over the years, I can't help but be excited about what Bell can do for the offense with his running ability. How much freedom do you think the coaching staff will give Bell to run and make plays?
I think he'll have a lot of freedom. I think he'll have a blank check to take off running when he sees openings. You're right, it will be exciting.
If Texas beats K-State, does that give the Heisman to Johnny Football? And how ironic/ crazy would that be?
He's getting a lot of support from people who influence votes. Not sure it would be ironic, but it would be crazy.
Why has it been OU has played better on the road then home this year? Outside of the the KS/ND games the crowds have been blah and even the KS/ND games the crowd really could never get going bc OU could never establish something. Seems like on the road they have less pressure then they do at home.
This question was raised on our forum last night. Somebody suggested that Landry plays more easygoing on the road. But I think it's way more than that, because Landry played pretty well against Notre Dame. Maybe overall, the team plays with a little more of a chip on its shoulder on the road.
Do you think Heupel is in over his head? Sometimes the management of our offense just makes no sense over the course of a game. Can he get better at OU, when so little new blood is infused in the coaching staff with such little turnover?
He's not even finished with his second year. Of course he can get better.
Does that mean uou aren't as high on Jordan Phillips as uou once were?
Not necessarily. I'm saying that Phillips is the only guy who I've seen do anything at the position that's returning. Marquis Anderson? Suspended. Torrea Peterson? Seems like he's been suspended or ineligible for a year now. Jordan Wade? Damon Williams? Not a lot to get excited about there.
I think we're taking for granite that we're still inevitability gonna get Justin Manning for the DT position, but if the sooners do get him to sign, is he enough of a talent to make OU's D-line a major threat next year or do they have to get some other major commit to go along with him to make a difference?
If they got Manning (which I also think they will) and Bain, it would be a great DT class.
do you see Cody Thomas being the next big time QB at OU?
Nah, I see Blake Bell being the next big time QB at OU.
Do we have any other DTs currently on the roster that could be difference makers next year? What has happened to Jordan Wade?
Wade physically not ready. Marquis Anderson has been suspended. Phillips is the only potential difference-maker.
Even with 1 loss are the Falcons still the best team in the NFL
Hmm, I still like San Fran and New England. That would be my Super Bowl pick.
Guys, that's all the time we have for the chat today. Thanks for all the questions. We'll do it again next Monday, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week.
