OK, ready to go with the question on this bye week for Texas
Does Manziel sort of remind you of Taylor Martinez? I ask because I remember he was incredible his frosh season and now, no one really talks about him. Will teams start to figure out ol' "Johnny Football" down the road like how everyone figured out Martinez?
We should have Max answer that one since he went to Nebraska. But I think that Johnny Football is in a much better offense and has much better offensive coaches than Martinez had at the start of his career. Plus he throws a better ball.
Head coaching jobs seem to be popping up all over the place. Which UT coach/coaches do you see bolting for one of these jobs?
Not sure if one of the coaches will get a HC job. I'm guessing there might be some contact about the lower level jobs. But from Texas the idea is to get a big time job and none of the current assistants are in line for a big-time job just yet.But I think Harsin might get a call about Idaho.
When Texas does eventually need a new head coach any chance Gary Patterson might be a candidate?
He would be a great choice and if DeLoss is still around at that time he will be a guy that is talked to. Those two go back a bit and have a good relationship.
Hey Carter I saw that you guys were saying that Harsin is going to answer some phone calls this offseason. I know that he wants to be a head coach, and I wouldn't mind him leaving for that opportunity, but do you think he would take another OC gig somewhere else, or does he only go for the HC job? If he does in fact leave who would be some names Tex looks at, or would the play calling just go to Major?
Well a lot of other schools do pay their OCs much more than the $675k Harsin makes so he might look elsewhere. I am sure he would rather get a HC job. But that might not be in the cards just yet. But I bet the phone rings for him some in the offseason just like it did last year. As for who Texas might think about, how about Chad Morris? He coached at Lake Travis and currently makes $1.3 million at Clemson. Texas wouldn't pay that but it is fun name to throw out there.
From everything I've seen texas is behind on alot of the top DB's in the 2014 class, which ones do you think we get? Is LSU challenging our crown as DBU?
Don't ever say that Texas is not DBU to Duane Akina. There would be a fistfight followed by a 30 minute lecture about all the guys he has coached. As for 2014 guys there are a ton in Texas. Guys to look out for are Brandon Simmons, Edwin Freeman, Ed Paris and Nick Watkins
Does Peter Jenkins compare to any former UT linebackers? how good can he be?
Way too early to tell on the comparisons. Just worry about him making tackles and filling the right gaps. He has started on game against a team that is challenged on offense.
How high should i get my hopes up on the offense and defense next year? Our offense should be scary good and our defense looks really good on paper, but then again it did this year albeit it looks alot better lately
Safety is a huge concern. They need a ton of help there. Other than that the defense should be good provided it doesn't have to learn a new system.
With Turner, Edmonds, Jenkins, Brown, and Davis i think the defense could be pretty nasty if they all stay
Turner is a big question. He has made a few plays but he also allowed the ISU guy to run right through him for the TD on Saturday. Shiro might be a backup again next year. Jeffcoat is back and Reed has played well.
If you had to put odds on one qb transferring next year who would it be? Would it have to be McCoy going off of that he's gonna be a senior and will want a chance to shine?
McCoy is not going anywhere. If there had to be a guy transfer and since there are going to be five QBs one most likely will I would say it would be Brewer.
Can't say enough about david ash this year, besides OU and KU he looks like a straight up baller
Very impressive. He hit Davis in stride on the 61-yarder. Could have had another TD in that game but underthrew the ball. still picked up a PI.
If Davis and Shipley keep this up next year, they would be the best WR tandem at UT since...?
Shipley and Cosby. They had 1091 combined catches, 21 TDs and each averaged more than 81 receiving yards per game in the 2008 season.
If you had to pick one must get from the class of 2014 who would it be?
Tough one. But i would say it would have to be a safety or corner. Maybe Paris.
Edmond is a big ol boy why doesn't he lay the boom more often? Not confident enough in his reads yet to go all out attacking the hole?
He is much better as of late. He has 37 tackles in the last four games and he is getting guys in space. His issue was just being young and not knowing where to go. Still has big upside.
Say we beat TCU. Going into KSU, how much greater to our chances increase w the adjustments thats been made to our Rush defense? because i dont think Klein is a great passer and we have a fairly salty pass d.
The issue there is the rush D still is not that great. i think Hubert and Klein are going to be able to get yards up the middle. Texas needs to hang with them and score when they score. I see it as a 31-28 type of game. Lots of yards given up. But maybe Texas can hold in red zone.
So the bball team set a new record in TO's but yet won with comfort. Compared to last yr, what upside and progress should we expect from this team as they continue to grow together? and hopefully take care of the ball.
A lot of that has to do with Myck being out. Felix was very careless with the ball. And those young guys are not confident yet in the passes and moves they are making. I think the hoops team will be tough come February.
Do you have any news on a childhood friend of mine named Torshiro Davis? Does he play at all or is he red-shirting? Hope he has a phenomenal career in Austin.
Yep he is playing. Backup right now but he tracked down some guys Saturday and showed some speed.
Out of the 4 RB @ TX Gray, Bergeron, Brown, and Daje who is their best back and why?
I like the question. I'm going Gray because he is the best combo of all four. He has a breakaway game with power and the ability to make guys miss.
Do you think Texas has a chance of being the school of choice when Marcel Harris
A chance but not a great one.
If the Longhorns run the table and ruin K-State's NC title hopes, what are the chances the 'Horns finishing with a top ten ranking?
well they are going to have to jump some guys and that OU loss really hurts. It will depend on who they play in the bowl and if it is a BCS bowl. I'm thinking Texas will be right around 9, 10 or 11 if they finish with three straight wins.
what are the chances mike davis goes pro after this season?
I'm not sure that would be a wise move. He is not ready and would not be a high pick. He needs to wait.
Any word on J Hicks getting a medical redshirt?
They have to wait and apply at the end of the season. But all signs point to that is what they are doing.
I heard Texas may be taking a hard look at taking another QB in the 2013 Class after Swoopes struggled this season. I heard the Arizona St commit out of Georgia is someone to keep an eye on. What do you know?
Not true as far as I know. Saw Swoopes at the game Saturday and Texas has a ton of QBs committed so it wold not make since to overload the roster with another.
Do you think there is a scare that Malcolm Brown(RB) will transfer? Seeing J.Gray and Bergeron doing well...
I don't think so. I think Gray and Brown are going to be the guys who share the load.
Odds of Texas vs aTm in a BCS game?
Cotton Bowl not BCS. Odds are high.
Does Diaz want out of Austin? If so, who are possible replacements? And, would bringing in a new DC for '13 set the defense back again?
I'm not so sure he is having the best time. i think he will listen to offers but whether he leaves is another question. There is no question he has had some issues on the field and that a parting of the ways is possible. As for another DC two guys to think about Sunseri at Tennessee and Peter Sirmon at Washington.
with so many TE on the roster why hasn't one of them broken out to be a clear starter? are they all just average D1 players? then why havent we gone after a top TE yet on the recruiting trail. we need another david thomas or jermichael finely
Got a story on that running tomorrow. The basic reason is none of them exactly fits the role of what Harsin wants. They recruited these guys before he got on campus and there is a certain type of player he wants at that spot.
I never thought Texas could/would get Randle, but now I'm hearing Texas is likely neck and neck with Florida as his top choice! I now have my hopes up. What are the chances he ends up in Austin? What about Frazier?
Seems to me William Wilkerson, our resident expert on all things hoops, said there was a chance with both.
Be honest....are you happy that the Aggies beat Bama? As much as it pains me to see them have success, it was nice seeing a former average Big 12 team silence the mighty SEC in their own house.
Don't care either way. But i did enjoy seeing the fan meltdown videos on youtube.
If Hicks gets a medical redshirt the Jeffcoat would rate one as well right?
No because Jeffcoat played in too many games. Have to play in four or less games to get medical.
How big of a recruiting class will 2014 be for the Horns? Any new news on 2013 possibilities - other than the offers Texas already has out?
This class will have about 20 or 21. Texas only has a handful of seniors so it has to be small unless there are transfers. Next year will be on the smaller side too because the junior class is not all that huge.
Going back to the RB question do you see all 4 RB staying at TX or do you think some might transfer with Gray obviously becoming the main back as a true freshman.....Do you think Gray will continue to be feature back ?
I think they all stay. Gray and Brown will be the guys. Bergeron will have to know his role. Daje can do more than just be a running back.
Am I the only fan who would want chip kelly to come coach Texas? i think we would be unstoppable
But Mack Brown is at Texas.
I'm not crazy about any of the names people are throwing around as possible Mack Brown replacements - when he RETIRES. I don't remember, how did Texas fans feel about the Mack Brown hire when it happened?
Well, he did things at UNC that no one had ever done so there was a lot of excitement around the program. Plus anybody but Mackovic was going to be heralded as a hero.
If Texas beats K-State, does that give the Heisman to Johnny Football?
Teo from Notre Dame.
Do you know why John Harris doesn't get much PT? He seems like he is turning into another Desean Hales...
Seth that is a huge mystery to me as well. I have watched him in practice and he does so many good things. I thought with his body he might be able to really add some skills to the WR position. I think he does not have the explosive speed that is needed and not a great route runner. But he has good hands and is big. Use him in inside the 20
Why would Texas go after a JUCO WR that is already committed elsewhere, rather than an uncommitted top rated HS WR (Treadwell)?
Because they will have need for an immediate impact guy and they do not have time to develop a freshman.
Our recruiting class hasn't had much good news with the loss of potentially having RSJ and hurts players left and right. Should the Longhorn fans be worried about A'shawn visiting other schools and not coming to the 40 acres?
Yes. A'Shawn is a big deal for Texas. But the Alabama loss took some of the shine off that possibility. I think he stays with Texas but it is going to be close.
Carter, first off, thanks for all the work you do. You said Teo is next in line for Heisman. A friend of mine here went to Georgia and I watch their games. Why isn't Jarvis Jones getting any LB Heisman love? The man is a straight-up BEAST.
I think Jarvis is a better player than Teo. But Teo plays for Notre Dame and if they are left out of the Title game the Heisman will be the consolation prize.Jarvis is the best college football player out there and should be a top three pick. Florida game was unreal
With the young talent, ASH, Gray, Brown, Bergeron and the others do you think they can compete for a National Title in the next few yrs?
Yep that is what the plan has been. 2013 or 2014 they should be right in the mix
With our roster having many Freshman and Sophomores that are playing a lot of minutes do you see many incoming freshman playing as in the past 2 years?
Well I didn't think 16 true freshmen would play this year. Was thinking more like 10.But you are right in the next couple of years Texas will get back into the mode of developing players through their redshirt years instead of playing them.
When do you see Myck playing again on the court? Couple Games, or a couple of weeks?
So tough to tell with NCAA. I think they will get him back in December. But not sure if that is before or after UCLA.
if we beat TCU next week, then we somehow beat K State on the 1st, will we be in a BCS bowl, assuming we'll be in the top 10?
Depends on OU. Texas needs OU to lose in order to make it to a BCS.
Sorry if you've already answered, but what is your bowl prediction for this team?
Cotton vs. Aggies
I get this feeling that with A&M getting so much attention it could potentially hurt Longhorn recruiting, your thoughts?
It sure could. there is a lot of talent in Texas and now the Aggies have become a player for some of the speedy talent that used to go to Texas.
do you think raulerson will play next year, or redshirt?
Redshirt. I think Texas has enough depth on both lines.
How come then did OU get into the National Title game when they beat Texas Tech? We beat OU, Tech beat Texas, and OU beat Tech. this would be the same if we beat K-State right? we should win the Big 12 and get the BCS nod
KSU would only have one loss so they get the BCS auto bid.OU only has one conference loss to KSU. They get second place.Texas has two conference losses.
Im hearing some back door politics could keep the rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl from happening, do you believe that and if so who would the Cotton pick to have play there if they can only choose from one of those teams?
No way. Cotton is salivating over that matchup.
Compare M Brown's freshmen yr to what Gray has done in his freshmen yr? Gray seems to be getting into his zone, do you see him if he stays healthy maybe becoming a all time great at TX and maybe hiesman bound?
Brown got hurt. Gray is healthy. Impossible to compare.
As for all-time great I do not know. He has started three games and gained 301 yards in those games. Hard to say whether or not he will be an all-time great.
didnt think of it that way thanks for that answer
No worries. It can get muddled.
OK, looks like that is it for questions. Be sure to hit us up on the forum and Max and William can get some more recruiting answers. Sean has a chat at 11 Friday.
