Chat with Jeff Dickerson

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:25 PM)

Greetings from Halas Hall. We were supposed to hear from Lovie Smith at noon but that got pushed back until 12:30. So let's get this started, and I'll make sure to throw in some Lovie comments as he talks to the media right behind me.

Ryan (Moline, IL)

Will the Bears please cut Davis?!?!?!? He is horrible. He can't catch anything and when he does manage to catch something, he fumbles it!!!

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:26 PM)

I don't know if the Bears would consider releasing Kellen Davis at this stage of the season. But I think the organization needs to take a close look at the tight end position in the offseason. Catch my drift?

Tom (Cali)

Do u think it is fair to say the Texans are better than us, when our QB gets a concussion on an illegal hit and we lose?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:27 PM)

Yes. I think it's fair to say the Texans are right now the better team. Doesn't mean they'll be the better team in January or February, but right now, I give Houston the nod. They won the game on the road in bad weather. That counts for an awful lot in my book.

Conrad (Canada)

I have been really disappointed with Jay Cutler. We got him a #1 WR who is his best friend and we got him a QB coach that he likes, but what have we gotten from this investment? Cutler is on pace for 3224 yards, 21 TDs and 18 INTs, those numbers are not what I was expecting from Cutler.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:30 PM)

Winning covers up a lot of problems. The truth of the matter is Cutler hasn't had a great year with a 80.4 overall passer rating. But he has endured his share of drops and protection breakdowns. The bottom line is the Bears still think Cutler can lead them to a Super Bowl.

De (Chicago)

Are both Jay Cuter and Alex Smith going to play on MNF or are they not?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:31 PM)

Too early in the week to say. Both need to best tested before they be cleared to return.

cathy (chicago)

will there be a fine for cutler hit

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:31 PM)

I'd be stunned if Tim Dobbins does not get fined. That hit will cost him.

Michael (Kenosha, WI)

If Cutler is unable to play vs 49ers do you think Jason Campbell can lead this offense to a win?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:33 PM)

It won't be easy, but I feel with 70 career starts Campbell is capable of doing the job. Not saying he will, but it's not out of the question. Isn't that the same story with every NFL No. 2 quarterback. There are no guarantees when teams get to their backups.

Jeff (Chicago)

When will we know Jay's status for monday?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:33 PM)

I think there is a good shot Jeffery plays on MNF. We should know for sure if he practices on Thursday.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:36 PM)

Whoops. Sorry. We should have a better idea on Jay by the middle of the week. Didn't get much sleep last night. My eyes are playing tricks on me.

Lovie Smith (Chicago)

Hey Jeff - I have the game ball from last night - who had the best game and deserves it and why?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:37 PM)

Defensive game ball goes to Tim Jennings. On offense, you could give it to Gabe Carimi. Didn't hear J.J. Watt's name called much.

Alex (Chicago)

There has been talk on ESPN 1000 about Mike Tice hoping for a Head Coaching opportunity next year. With they way the offense as performed this year (near the bottom of the rankings), how can a team be interested in his services?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:39 PM)

The way for Tice to get a head coaching interview would be if the Bears get to the Super Bowl or deep in the playoffs. Assts from winning teams usually get those interviews, especially someone who has been a head coach before. Based on performance, not so much.

Fernando Pineda [via mobile]

It seems as if Forte is not getting the big runs that he had last year. Do you think he has lost a step? Also, why can't we get a few more passes thrown to Bennet? Last year he was very productive.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:41 PM)

I think Forte is simply not getting enough touches. I have no clue why Bennett does not get more passes thrown his way. Unless he's still hurt, there is no excuse. Bennett has not appeared on the injury report for weeks.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:42 PM)

And here he is (40 minutes late) Lovie Smith walks to the podium at Halas Hall...

Mateo (Cubcile Dream)

JD - No team is perfect and I think reasonable/fair criticism is deserved, but can you just send a 'RELAX' comment on why the Bears are still in good shape!?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:43 PM)

There is no reason to go crazy after one loss (although the starting QB suffering a concussion is not a good thing). The Bears are 7-2. They are still in good shape.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:44 PM)

Lovie Smith said Shea McClellin's concussion hurt the defensive line rotation. Said McClellin displayed symptoms right away and was taken out immediately. Smith said Cutler did not display symptoms right away.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:45 PM)

Smith said both McClellin and Cutler and feeling much better today, but he doesn't know if they will be ready to play vs. the 49ers.

cathy (chicago)

any chance tice is not offensive coordinator next year and bates is?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:46 PM)

That would be four OCs in five years.

Eric (Miami)

Please talk me off the ledge. Tell me why I should have a positive feel for the next 7 games and (hopefully) the playoffs.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:47 PM)

Because the Bears only need to win 3 or 4 more games to make the playoffs. It can happen.

Wayner (The Loop)

JD, I love what Marshall has done for the Bears. That said, I am a little concerned that in two of the team's biggest tests, Marshall has dropped sure-fire TDs, one against Green Bay and one last night. Had Marshall caught those passes as he should have, we could be talking 8-0 right now. Any concern about Marshall's performance in critical situations?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:48 PM)

For being such a great WR, and Marshall is a GREAT WR, he does drop passes from time to time. But he makes so many plays that I guess you have to live with the mistakes. But that drop in the endzone hurt the Bears last night, no doubt.

Shaun (Chicago )

Is coach Smith saying in his press conf that Jay Cutler is my QB?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:49 PM)

He has not. But he did mention the fact the Bears started the third quarter of their season on a bad note. Lovie loves talking about those quarters.

Bob (Lake Forest, IL)

Can Devin Hester stop calling for the ball, please???

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:51 PM)

I think the coaches should stop calling his number, first off. Hester is not doing much the help the team on offense, or really special teams for that matter.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:52 PM)

Lovie Smith on Kellen Davis: "Last night wasn't his best game. Simple as that. He'll come back from it."

Stephen (Dekalb)

Honestly why is Kellen Davis not under massive fire for the way he has been playing recently. He consistantly misses blocks, has holding calls called on him and gets knocked off routes like a rag doll. Honestly a 6'7" TE should not be knocked off routes by defensive backs. Add that with him having almost more drops then catches this season and his first touch yesterday he fumbled why hasn't he been benched for Kyle Adams?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:53 PM)

Kellen Davis is not very good. But the Bears are 7-2. Like I said before, winning covers up a lot of problems.

Mike (Westford, MA)

Hester has "jumped the shark" as a returner. His best returns were heading up field at full speed and making one or two cuts then poof, gone. Now he dances way to much until the D is basically on him.

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:54 PM)

There were times last night when he had room to run in front of him. And he danced. I don't get it. Maybe he's done. You can't return kicks forever in the NFL.

Bob (Lake Forest, IL)

If nothing else, last night had to give Gabe Carimi a ton of confidence moving forward... Do you think he can turn the corner after a solid performance against JJ Wattever?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:57 PM)

I hope so. Bears had a good plan to contain Watt and they executed it to near perfection. Carimi was a big part of that. But the Bears also wisely gave him plenty of help with No. 99.

Hodo (Ames, IA)

Why were the Bears calling such a conservative predictable game when Campbell came under center?

Jeff Dickerson
  (1:57 PM)

Probably because they were only down 7 points and didn't want to turn the ball over.

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:00 PM)

Lovie just wrapped up. Did say he would prefer to know as early in the week as possible who his QB will be going into a game. I'm sure the Bears have an idea of what Cutler's status will be on MNF but aren't going to reveal it until they have to.

Bryan (Chicago)

The Bears are paying Campbell $3 million for a reason. It doesn't help he's being called upon during the hardest part of the schedule but he needs to be able to win a few games.

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:01 PM)

I agree. But it's not easy. You just have to remember that.

Jeff Dickerson
  (2:01 PM)

Thank you everybody. Have a great rest of your day. Should be an eventful week at Halas Hall to say the least.
