Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:00 AM)

Hello everyone. Thanks for coming by. Let's dive in.

Erick (Texas)

Hey Paul. Love your insight. Can Houston win a game when coming back from behind? Was the Green Bay game the recipe to defeat Houston? Or was that more of a bad game with an angry Aaron Rodgers?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:02 AM)

I don't think we can say they can't come back based on that one game. If they are down 10 or 14, I don't see why they couldn't gather themselves and recover.

Gary (Knoxville, TN)

Say they find a way to win at New England, assuming they keep improving, is Houston still a solid lock to win the division? They might need to look over their shoulder.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:03 AM)

I can't see Houston losing the division. But of course anything can happen.

daniel (indianapolis)

with Josh Chapman being cleared to play; do you see him being effective this year? Do you see him at least occupying a double team on a regular to help free up the outside rush?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:04 AM)

No idea. I do think during his time out, a lot of fans built him up and it will be hard for him to live up to expectations. Adjust them. Expect a role player who can contribute. Then be pleasantly surprised if it's more instead of disappointed if he doesn't transform the defense.

Cory (Las Vegas, NV)

Are there any AFC South players you think should be in the top 5 in Pro Bowl voting that aren't?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:04 AM)

Danieal Manning and Paul Posluszny.

Tatum (La Marque,Tx)

The Texans are coming off a big win at Chicago and are 15pt favorites over Jags. Could this be a potential look ahead game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:05 AM)

I don't believe in look ahead games. And I think the talent gap is such that Houston could sleepwalk and win.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will be the Best AFC South Team In 2012 After week 17?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:06 AM)

I'm hardly going out on a limb saying Houston.

mark, niagara falls canada [via mobile]

Am amazed at the overall lack of aggression by the titans defence this year. After seeing the bills game in person it was hard to deny that all al alfalava brought a level of hitting ability that is missing. In light of the sunday beatdowns that seem to occur regularly why have coaches been so reluctant to get him more snaps? Ps, I read that will hoge is back in the studio - whoooo!

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:07 AM)

Hoge put out a small album lately. He may be visiting my radio show next week before he plays Nashville. Alfalava is a good run defender who's limited in pass coverage. What do the Titans fear above all else? Big pass plays.

JayKay (H-Town)

At this point, is JAX looking to draft a QB with their 1st round pick or will they stick with Gabbert for a 3rd year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:08 AM)

We need to know who's making the decisions before we have any idea about that.

Jeff (Toronto, Canada)

Barring Adams selling the team is there any real chance a major shake up... ie president/GM/Coach

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:08 AM)

Depends on what they do the rest of the way. I expect staff changes, nothing as high as Munchak, Webster or Reinfeldt.

Aiden (Jackson, MS)

What took the Texans so long to gel as a team and get things together? They had great talent on this team for years and could never seem to get things together.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:10 AM)

I disagree. Before guys like Johnathan Joseph, Danieal Manning, J.J. Watt, and Brooks Reed were added and Wade Phillips was coordinating, they didn't have a good defense at all.

JayKay (H-Town)

When coaches have a Sunday and then a Thursday game, do they start preparing film for that Thursday game even before the Sunday game has been played?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:10 AM)

Yes. They have guys on staff who work ahead and get the Thursday opponent stuff ready ahead of schedule. But they don't generally game plan ahead, for fear of not being focused enough on the Sunday opponent.

JayKay (H-Town)

What is your opinion of the "Bulls on Parade" moniker for the Texans defense? My "Rage Against the Machine" fan can't stand it. I like it.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:11 AM)

I think it's a little forced. But if people embrace it...

Andrew (Houston )

Do you expect the Texans to have the Division clinched by the first game against the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:11 AM)

No. And even if they did, they'd still have AFC positioning concerns.

David (Virginia)

I've been so reluctant to say or ask this, but...can we say Chris Johnson is "back" at this point?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:12 AM)

If we say it, he'll run for 24 yards next game.

JayKay (H-Town)

Do you think football games should end in ties, or should they just play til someone scores?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:12 AM)

More than an additional 15 minutes is too much, and then has a bearing on two more games the next week. Or what if one of those teams was playing Thursday. I have no problem with a tie after 75 minutes.

lokey (tn)

how would you say velasco has done this year? better or worse than amano?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:12 AM)

A little better.

JayKay (H-Town)

Should Texans fans root for Indy to beat NE (for #1 seed purposes) or for NE to beat Indy (for division purposes)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:13 AM)

Good question. With two head-to-heads left with the Colts and a two-game lead, I'd root for Colts for home-field purposes.

Heather (Stillwater, OK)

I know that Peyton with the Broncos is having an outstanding season but how to do think the Colts would fare if he was still in Indy? To me the talent in Indy still doesn't even compare with the talent in Houston.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:14 AM)

I'm not sure the Colts would be better, record-wise. Long-term decision, they absolutely did the right thing.

Blueman (Indy)

With Powers going on IR and him not having a very good year do the Colts re-sign him? He is not ever going to be great but they are so thin at the spot I don't think they can find 2 guys that are better than him unless they spend big cash.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:15 AM)

I think he'd probably be affordable. He needs to play better in man to man, and can. The injuries are a concern. But I'd want him back.

its (game time)

do you see texans coaching staff staying the same for next year? or do some move on for a better job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:16 AM)

Can't move on if you're under contract, unless it's to a head coaching job. Only possibility there would be Phillips, and I don't see that happening.

Jeff (Toronto, Canada)

How about in Playoff games... if tied after 4 quarters you play a full quarter... rather than quasi-sudden death format currently in place.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:19 AM)

I'm not for lengthening games.

Blair (Bham, AL)

I have suffered through the results of the Gene Smith era in Jax and trusted long enough. Who do you feel or is known in the NFL as a young up and comer that would be a good replacement? Omitting Polian obviously!

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:20 AM)

How about George Paton from Minnesota? Or Omar Khan from Pittsburgh?

Lucky Horseshoe (Rockville Md)

I know this is bad taste to consider but . . . Should Colts fans expect Pagano, Arians or someone else at head coach next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:20 AM)

Pagano.

Bill (Houston)

What are the chances Kubiak wins COY honors?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:21 AM)

Probably slim. You usually need to be a surprise to win it. Which favors Pagano/Arians or Mike Smith or Lovie Smith. I'd probably put Kubiak third behind Colts and Falcons right now.

Jeff (Texas)

As a Texans fan, I thought we would be running away with the division by now. I'm not too worried but I don't like Indy hanging around while Luck's confidence keeps growing. Will the Colts success continue when they have all these road games coming up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:22 AM)

Colts have enough winnable games on their schedule to make it.

Chris Johnson (Tennessee)

I sure am glad I figured out I would lose a cool 9 mil in bonus money if I was cut. That would have been a disaster, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:23 AM)

Better keep playing, because you've not guaranteed that guarantee yet.

Jay (Knoxville, TN)

Which game are you at this weekend? Division game or the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:23 AM)

Colts.

Doug (MD)

I like Arians a lot. Hearing that he loves head coaching this year has me worried about him not being there next year. Should I be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:24 AM)

Not sure. Teams that will need coaches will want QB developers. But they also like young up and comers, and he's 60. Maybe the Colts will give him more money to not explore, like the Texans did with Wade Phillips last year.

Ryan (Fort Wayne, IN)

How good can this Colts defense be? Mathis and Freeney finally appear to be healthy...D. Butler looks like a nice find...Redding is a solid veteran leader, and Freeman has been a pleasant surprise. What are your thoughts on the Colts defense heading down the stretch.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:25 AM)

It can be about average, which can be good enough. That was one game for Butler. Let's not get carried away.

JD (Glasgow)

Would Arians be eligible for Coach of the year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:26 AM)

I think voters can write down whomever they like. I don't have a vote. I'd write "Chuck Pagano/Bruce Arians."

Topher (Nashville) [via mobile]

Will Zach Brown remain a starter when will Witherspoon is healthy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:26 AM)

Yes. Witherspoon was demoted before he was hurt.

Blueman (Indy)

I know the Colts can't beat the Patriots if the game turns into a track meet but can the hold the ball enough to keep the game close and then hope for a turnover to win?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:27 AM)

The Colts can't count on takeaways, I don't think. They're gravy.

David (Baltimore, MD)

Could you explain how the Titans have been using the LB corp? I read somewhere (can't think of source) that said that D has marginally improved because Ayers is being used in more specialized role with Brown and McCarthy seeing more snaps. Is this the case and could you elaborate?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:28 AM)

Brown is playing more in the nickel now. That means they don't have to have Ayers as one of the two LBs in nickel, which allows them to use Ayers as a DE. And he's rushed well when he's moved up. McCarthy is an every-down guy if he's healthy enough for it, that doesn't change.

Blaise (FSU)

Could Chip Kelly's coaching translate to the NFL?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:30 AM)

I think so. This is an excellent take on it from Chase Stuart: http://www.footballperspective.com/chip-kelly-is-as-likely-to-be-the-next-great-coach-as-anyone-else/

Todd (Indy)

With Freeman playing so well, what do the Colts do with Angerer? Can they continue to co-exist?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:31 AM)

Having that kind of depth isn't an issue that they've had to deal with at many spots. It's a great problem to have.

Johnny (Nashville)

Do you think Jake Locker's shoulder injury could be a significant problem for the Titans down the road?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:31 AM)

Nope.

its (game time)

does houston get to host another superbowl?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:31 AM)

I don't see why it wouldn't.

Justin (Nashville)

I know Lockers sample size is small, but is it safe to say he was the better pick for the Titans than Gabbert? ESPN Anlayst balked at the Titans taking him 8th ahead of Gabbert and to be honest Gabbert does not look the part while Locker still has a chance.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:31 AM)

He's better than Gabbert now, for sure. By a good margin.

Answer (my question)

Would you consider James Casey one of the best Full backs in all of football? He can do it all, block, run it, and catch the ball along with making outstanding efforts on getting a first down.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:33 AM)

I don't think of him as a fullback. I think of him as an H-back. He blocks OK, but they are wasting him in that role. He's going to be a free agent. he should leave for a place where he'd play TE or H-B and get to catch more passes.

Matt S (Lowell, IN)

Do you think the Titans problems are primarily about coaching or personnel? Who gets the blame for this atrocity?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:33 AM)

Players for playing poorly. Coaches for scheming poorly and playing the wrong people at times. Front office for roster composition. Lots of blame to go around.

Matt S (Lowell, IN)

Do the Colts have any longterm WR's on this team? Wayne is great but aging--who else could last for 5-8 years?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:34 AM)

Both T.Y. Hilton and LaVon Brazill have the potential to have good careers.

Justin (Nashville)

Biggest disappointment for Titans on offense this year Britt or Cook?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:35 AM)

Cook is partly a battle with Chris Palmer. Britt's consistency and health are issues.

daniel (indianapolis)

Do you get quality time with the family during thanksgiving and Christmas or do you still have to work through them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:35 AM)

I'll be in Detroit for Thanksgiving to cover the Texans. We'll have a nice Christmas together, though.

DJ Drummond (Houston)

I'm mixed about Dobbin's fine. Yes the hit was rough but Cutler had already run for first down several times and he was across the line. I understand the NFL wants to protect the Princesses, but really, what is the defender supposed to do when the QB is a runner?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:36 AM)

Technically, he was not a runner. He was very much in the throwing motion. He should have been fined. But that was steep.

lokey (tn)

andrew luck has a good game he is the second coming of joe montana, locker has a good game nothing, why is that?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:37 AM)

Because in Locker's good game he completed all of nine passes?

JD (Boise)

How do they fix pro bowl voting? Duane Brown has been a top 3 LT in the league over the last 2 years, let alone the AFC. But it's tiring seeing guys get in solely on reputation. It's tiring seeing guys whose production slips but always get voted because of name recognition. There's got to be some influence put in by coaches and GM's right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:38 AM)

There is influence from coaches. Pro Bowl rosters are put together based on three votes that count a third each: Fans, coaches and players.

David (Baltimore, MD)

You mentioned Cook is in a battle with Chris Palmer. That is mind-blowing to me given that when Palmer was hired he spent a lot of time talking about Cook specifically. What has happened?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:39 AM)

It's one thing to see a guy on tape on your way in and talk him up. It's possible to be something different after working together for a time. And they don't get along.

Jon (Seattle)

Why doesn't Karl Klug get more playing time after racking 7 sacks (as a rookie interior lineman) his rookie season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:39 AM)

Because playing time now isn't based on what you did last year. It's based on what he is doing in practice and game opportunities now.

Rah-Steam (Hackensack, N.J.)

Hey Paulie, if you were running the Jags what direction would you go in the off-season? Would you draft a qb? Would you get rid of MJD?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:40 AM)

I'd hire an up-and-coming GM and let him make all those decisions. Probably smart to line up a QB alternative, at least, and to deal MJD based on contract situation.

Doug (MD)

Peyton, Brady... who's the third QB from the AFC for the Pro Bowl playing better than Luck? I can't think of one

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:42 AM)

Big Ben is third. Deserving. Schaub is fourth. You could certainly argue Luck should be ahead of him. It's the first tally of votes that count just one-third of the results.

Bob Ross (Happyville)

Why is everyone up in arms about the pro bowl voting? Do you agree most of the Texans players, if selected, would likely not play (either because they are playing a game the next week, or because they are banged up from the playoffs)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:43 AM)

I agree. But fans still want to see their guys elected to the team. It's not about playing in it.

Matt S (Lowell, IN)

For years this has been a passing league. This year, however, the best QB's are not producing the best teams. Chicago, Houston, SF are winning with power on O and D. Is this because of college teams changing their strategy, a pendulum swing, or the crop of QB's declining in talent?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:45 AM)

Coincidence. You left out QB-driven Atlanta. And we'll still hear from Green Bay, New England and Denver.

Justin (Nashville)

I think expecations were too high for Titans. They are right where they should be. Last two years Fisher had 14 wins. Munchak currently has 13. Titans will finish with more wins under Munchak last two years than Fishers. Thought?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:46 AM)

When you win nine last year, you set expectations for this year. I kind of agree. Said from the start they weren't going to be very good. The question is why not and why didn't they do more to set themselves up for better results.

Ryan (Nashville)

Will Jerry Gray and Chris Palmer be employed by the Titans for the 2013 season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:48 AM)

I don't think Munch will let them go easily. And we need to see six more games. But my guess at this point would be a Munchak extension that would allow him to hire new coordinators and give them three years of job security.

Bill Polian (Nowhere)

How do you explain Tim Jennings' success in Chicago when seemed much less talented while in Indy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:49 AM)

Sometimes guys do better after a change of scenery and a couple years and better health.

CJ (Nashville)

Come back player of the year? Since my O-line has gotten it back together and I'm able to run the ball, I really deserve it, huh?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:50 AM)

It's not usually about coming back from a 1,300-yard year. It should absolutely be Manning, coming back from a season missed after multiple neck surgeries. It could be Adrian Peterson, with quick return from ACL. It's not gonig to be CJ.

Held Grudge (Last Week's Chat)

Do you think Rusty Smith would complete more than 9 of 22 passes against the Fins?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:51 AM)

Maybe. But he wouldn't have played a better game than Locker did.

Deon (NC) [via mobile]

Do you think with all the cap space the colts will have that will be active in free agency?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:51 AM)

I do.

Myles (Chicago)

Why so little attention paid to the injuries on TN? Especially as a cause of the bad record- Casey and Marks with nagging injuries all year, centerpiece McCarthy out and now playing on a bum ankle, Locker out, Britt recovering but having nagging injuries. In my count that's your most important Offensive player, and the two centerpieces of the defense...

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:52 AM)

You don't generally get injuries as an excuse for guys who are playing. The whole world has nagging injuries. And as Hasselbeck is a pretty good backup and Locker is unproven, that wasn't as big a story.

Chuck (Nashville)

I don't see why its continually over looked that Houston "gave" TN the last game of the year. They pulled TJ with a hangnail in a meaningless game, then rightfully DIDN'T play for a tie just to end the game. We are stuck in mediocrity.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:53 AM)

Given or taken, it goes in the W column. And even 8-8 last year would have been cause for promise going forward considering it was a new coach and staff with new quarterbacks.

Rusty Smith (Nashville)

Do people forget I was the one person who Houston's 2010 defense could actually stop? I'm happy on the bench with people just thinking I'm good.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:54 AM)

If you can't love the backup, you turn to the third-stringer.

Hanson (DC)

To all those who complained when Grigson let all the vets go it seems the guys he re-signed are playing well and those who are gone are doing nothing(except that Manning guy)?Should more attention be paid to who a guy lets go to determine if he is doing a good job?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:55 AM)

I don't know that anyone with a broad view held Garcon, Saturday, Brackett, Bullitt, or any of the releases or free agent departures against Grigson. The franchise pretty much decided to clean house. And even if they were 3-6 instead of 6-3, it was the right plan.

Paul (Kuharsky)

Is it me or has J-Joe been playing a lot worse than he was last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:56 AM)

He had a couple lousy games, when a groin injury was a factor. Has bounced back. Not as good as last year, but still good when healthy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:57 AM)

Any sign of Hochuli?

Matt S (Lowell, IN)

Gene Smith is probably gone at the end of the year, but how far back does that set the Jags. Most GM's want to bring in their guy to coach, which means another coaching change? Or do you sit on a lame duck coach for a year as the team changes around him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:00 PM)

I think you can't ask a new GM to take on a coach that isn't his. I think the whole deal needs to be blown up, even though Mularkey isn't a primary or long-term offender.

Hanson (DC)

As any great director would say "That's a wrap"

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:00 PM)

Who's Hanson and what has he directed? Thanks for coming. Always fun. Cheers.
