All right, let's do this thing.
Hi Dan, what do you see as the Redskins top off-season priority....Offensive Line or DB's?
I think defensive backs, Dom. The Redskins feel decent about the line they have now. They have a franchise left tackle, and they're getting very good play this year from center and right guard. They also feel as though their running quarterback can help cover up some deficiencies on the line. I think they'll devote a lot of offseason energy to cornerback and safety, which is their biggest need right now.
Look at the remaining schedule... the Giants still have to play the Packers, Falcons, Ravens, & Saints. Dallas plays the Bengals, Steelers,
Right. And if you assume the Giants and Cowboys are similar quality teams, you'd favor the Cowboys due to their schedule. I just think the Giants are the superior team (something about which I could certainly turn out to be wrong!), and that combined with their one-game lead means I think they have the advantage the rest of the way.
Which team suffers more from this week's injuries (Redskin's Defense or Cowboy's offense)?
Cowboys offense. They can't afford to lose their best lineman from an already-struggling offensive line.
Who will snatch that last NFC wild card? Can the Saints pull themselves out of that hole?
Saints look like a freight train, and are only one game out of the spot. I don't think that wild card comes out of the East.
I'm a dallas fan, but I really wonder why no one talks about the redskins chance of winning the east. They have an easier schedule than Dallas, and quite frankly look better.
Perhaps that would change if Washington won Thursday and they had the same record. But the Redskins' defense has been one of the worst in the league, and the offense doesn't have all of its important pieces. And they're a game worse right now with six to play.
How many games do you think the Giants will win out of these last 6 games? I'm thinking 4-2 but maybe because i'm a fan...
Well, if they're going to hit my preseason prediction, they have to go 6-0. So I'm not technically giving up on that yet. But realistically, I'd say 3-3 and win the division at 9-7 again.
Dan, The Packers on Sunday, followed by the Redskins on the road on Monday night. To me this has 6-6 written all over it for the Giants. Thoughts??
I was just saying to someone that it'd be just like the Giants to beat the Packers and then lose in Washington. Wouldn't it?
Dan - just pointing out that according to sources, Tyron Smith may still yet play on Thursday. It's possible Dallas lines up with the same offense on Thursday they had on Sunday. Hell, who know, we may even see Murray...
Yeah, sounds like Smith hasn't been ruled out. I think Murray would be a big surprise, though.
Hey Dan, the Redskins have played well against the run. Since the cowboys are thin at running back and their star left tackle is out, do you see the coaching staff focusing on making the Cowboys one dimensional?
Yeah, that's the right way to go. But they have to figure out how to cover Dez Bryant.
Dan, IF the Skins beat the Cowboys Thursday, then beat a giants team at home that they barely lost to last time, wouldn't you have to list them as a legitimate contender in the east?
Of course. They'd be 6-6, the Giants would be no better than 7-5 and the Cowboys no better than 6-6. How could you not?
Cover Dez man or work the zone?
I don't think Washington has a physical enough corner to get away with covering Bryant man to man.
Remember how whenever someone asks about TO and Plax you get really angry and yell that they are done. Please address the news that Plax is working out for the Steelers. If they sign him, would you delcare that you are again a Pineapple or some other tropical fruit?
I don't get angry or yell. But that guy stinks, and the Steelers are only trying him out because they're incredibly desperate.
do you see any chance of Garrett (if the Boys don't make the playoffs) or Andy Reid not losing their jobs at the end of the year?
I think Reid is out and Garrett is safe, as I have written many, many times.
Can the eagles turn it around???
No. No. No. They're horrible.
Dan, when can we expect your Thanksgiving picks?
Undecided. Possibly tomorrow, possibly Thursday morning. Lots to do to get ready to go away tomorrow night.
Which team has a better chance at the playoffs, Dallas or Washington?
Dallas, because they have the better record, which is how playoff spots are determined.
Up to this point, is this the worst Eagles team ever coached by Andy Reid?
Sure. Only twice has he lost more than 8 games in a season. He's already lost 7 and has six games still to go.
Dan, anything to the Holmgren and Jerry speculation? Could you see him working for Jerry in a front office capacity?
Hey Dan! Since the regular season is such a grind...why all the stink about who is great during the regular season? In the modern era, isnt just a race to get to the playoffs and be hot at the right time. You can be 9-1 like the Falcons...but I see them as getting bounced. Peaking too early....unlike my Giants who are right where they want to be....your thoughts?
Yeah, but you've got to get in. Falcons know they're making it. Giants still don't. If you push right to the end every year, sometimes you don't make it, as with the Giants in 2009 and 2010.
Was Sunday's win more of how bad the Eagles are than how well the Skins played?
I find it hard to parse these types of questions, but I think it's fair to say it wasn't the toughest challenge the Redskins have faced this year.
Dan, don't be such a hypocrite. You won't give up on you predictions until they are mathematically impossible yet the Eagles aren't mathematically eliminated but you've given up on them turning it around.
But I've given up on my preseason prediction of them going 11-5.
Have opposing teams adjusted to the Giants "vaunted" pass rush or are Tuck and Umenyiora just not playing well? Or is it impossible to tell?
I think it's the latter.
Redskins just signed DB Jerome Murphy. Who is he, what does he bring to the table and what is your take on him?
I think he's a depth signing in the wake of the Meriweather injury and likely to contribute on special teams if at all.
Dan, did you see anything from Nick Foles that would give Eagles fans at least something to look forward to next year?
He made some nice throws on third downs in the first half.
Dan, what has happened to Doug Free? Was the change to the right side too much for him?
He stunk on the left side last year too, which is one reason they made the change. Free is a major mystery. The way he's played since he got his contract is a huge disappointment, and I don't think the Cowboys understand why it's happened.
Which offense on Thursday is better suited for the short week?
I'll say Washington's, simply because Dallas hasn't seen it yet and it's very unusual.
Why do the folks on at 103.3 in Dallas (Ben and Skin) dislike your opinions so much? They said the NFC East blog has taken off since you took over. They were being sarcastic because they were talking to Matt Moseley.
I think they just like to give Mosley a hard time on the air. It's a running joke.
Your response to his question is why I come to this chat every week...you are an obnoxious jerk to the people who pose questions here. It's fun to watch.Tyler (Washington, DC)Which team has a better chance at the playoffs, Dallas or Washington?Dan Graziano (12:10 PM)Dallas, because they have the better record, which is how playoff spots are determined.
Do you think Garcon's play time will increase in the Turkey Bowl?
No, I'd actually be a little surprised if he played at all, after only three days off.
Based on the way this season has unfolded, could it be argued that Jason Peters is the best player in the division?
Ha. I see your point.
I understand everyone is focusing on the Redskin's needing to improve on DBs and the o-line in the offseason. Shouldn't we be looking for a pass rusher too? I'd almost argue if we had anything at all behind Orakpo that it would improve our secondary more than adding a 2nd round safety (at least short term).
Well, but Kerrigan is a good one. He's just struggled since Orakpo got hurt, perhaps due to the extra attention.
Will Merriweather and Tanard Jackson be on the Redskins next season?
Jackson's unlikely to be back next season with them or anyone, I think. Sad story, really. Guy's got a problem. As for Meriweather, my guess is it depends on what the other options are.
I do know the Redskins like Meriweather as a fit for their defense.
Do you think the signing of Murphy is the beginning of the end for D-Hall in Washington?
I doubt the two are connected, but I'd be stunned if Hall were still on next year's team.
Dan, perhaps an X-Factor for Thursday game is the fact that Dallas not only lost key players, but went OT to a very physical team. I think getting this team rested and practiced in time to prepare for an electric Washington O is a tall order. Would you agree the Dallas D performance will be key for a Cowboys win?
Yeah. Always is. Their defense has been very good. Again, this is an unusual challenge, and I'm curious to see how prepared they are for it on a short week. Redskins had the bye last week and spent some time working on Dallas while Dallas was working on Philly.
The Phillies have won a game (October 1) more recently than the Eagles (September 30). Will this still be true in January?
Ware v. Williams, who wins more? And how often do you think Dallas will move Ware around to keep that matchup from happening?
Williams handled him very well last year and is playing better now than he was then. I think Dallas moves Ware around a lot, and in part for that reason, yes.
You had a few very good special blogs about the All-22 tape earlier in the year. Will there be more of those?
I hope so. Ran into some technical difficulties. Got to get back to those.
What do you think will the repercussions for TC if the giants collapse in the second half (again).
He will be sad, and will show up at training camp next year determined to use this season's disappointment to motivate next year's team.
Dan, in the offseason, several Packers claimed the Giants "didn't deserve" to beat them in the playoffs last year. This really fired up the Giants earlier in the season when the 49ers said the same thing. Any chance that becomes a motivating factor Sunday night?
Yes. There is no doubt that is being brought up at Giants camp this week.
Hi Dan, Who do you think gets sacked more on Turkeyday, RG3 or Romo
With 2 SB wins in the past 4yrs, Coughlin decides when it's time to go. Anybody implying otherwise just doesn't know how the Giants operate.
Dan Graziano (12:00 PM)All right, let's do this thing.I love the punctuality. That is all.
I aim to please.
Are there no better Safeties or Cornerbacks in the free agency pool that could help the Skins make a move? Why was Talib not thought of?
Talib comes with some serious off-field issues, and the Redskins feel they've dealt with enough of that.
When do the Eagles start giving some playing time to 2nd round pick Vinny Curry? Have you had a chance to see how he looks in practice?
Reports are that Curry will be active this week for the first time, so you'll get to see for yourself.
Any chance the skins wish they had kepy Laron Landry now?
No, I don't think they have any regrets there. He had plenty of chances in DC.
When are you posting your Georgetown-Indiana prediction?
I may take up praying again for this one.
Where's Kafka when you need him? I mean, right?
He's been in the news. Got a tryout in Pittsburgh this week.
Is too much being made of demarco murray's absence? He wasnt exactly tearing it up when he got hurt and even lance dunbar looked great against that suspect ravens run D. Can anyone run behind the Cowboy's horrible offensive line?
It's a worthwhile question, but I think Murray's shown the ability to be the kind of tough runner who can pick up yards after contact.
Don't you think Garrett's coaching and playcalling is hurting his team? We don't see many adjustments
You saw no adjustments after halftime Sunday?
I am hearing rumors that Josh Wilson may not play thursday because of a shoulder strain. Any updates to this?
I'd not heard that, but I've been in this chat for the last half hour.
After a near loss to a not-so-good Browns team, is a win on Turkeyday vital to Garrett's job in Dallas?
No, it's really not. Garrett is going to be the coach. The owner loves him, and thinks he's done a good job.
Does RG3 have any magic left to lead the Redskins into the playoffs
I think he's got plenty of magic. I don't think he has the defense.
Please tell me how Jerry Jones is willing to do the same thing year-after-year (put these teams together) and be ok with being irrelevant since 1996? I know he owns the team, but should'nt the priority be to win?
I guess "irrelevant" is the part of the question I don't understand. It's not as though people have stopped paying attention to them.
"I think he's got plenty of magic. I don't think he has the defense." GASP! Are you trying to suggest that QBs...don't win games on their own? Sacriliedge!
It's a new theory I've been working on.
Are the Eagle's QB woes perhaps a vision of things to come for the Cowboys and Giants when Romo and Manning retire sometime within the next five years (assuming they reach 35)? I have to imagine Jerry Jones and John Mara are taking backup QB plans very seriously now, after watching Reid crash and burn on the Vick experiment.
Yeah, it's a warning for any team, but the warnings are all over the league. Teams that aren't set at QB flounder. Teams that are can approach things with more confidence.
With Free looking disgusting do Cowboys look at tackle in the offseason or do they work on interior?
I think you have to build outside-in on that line.
For all of the romo haters, how many wins does Dallas have without him at QB?
None, since the ball would just roll around on the ground after the center snapped it.
And yes, I am aware I've used that joke before.
Do you think Vick plays next year if the eagles release him?
Yeah. You looked around the league? Teams need quarterbacks, Jevon.
why should i continue watching the eagles rest of the season?
Not much else on TV on Sunday afternoons, right?
Do you think the Eagles will release Vick?
Dan, do the Cowboys lock Spencer up with a contract after the season? He's been playing very well.
Yes, I think he's played his way into a long-term deal there. They'll just have to hope he handles it better than Free did.
Release? Not trade?get a 7th rounder for him maybe
Who's trading for that contract?
Would you start RG3 on your fantasy team against the Cowboys? Think he'll be able to produce points against a tough D?
I can't imagine not starting him if I had him on my fantasy team at this point.
Which big name eagles other than vick and reid do you see getting the boot?
I think the writing is on the wall for Babin, possibly Asomugha.
If the Giants could only keep 1 WR who would it be, Cruz or Nicks?
I think Nicks' health issues have pushed Cruz to the top of that discussion.
Cowboys--Redskins: Over/Under 46 total points?
Will Sean Payton be in the mix for any Beast jobs this offseason? Who would be the frontrunner for the Eagles?
I have to believe Payton stays in New Orleans. Lot of people connecting Chip Kelly to the Eagles. All speculation at this point, though.
What are your thoughts on the rule change rumor that there will be a weight limit on kickoffs, and that a return kick for a TD on a kickoff results in only 3 points? Call me old school but what would that change for the better?
Why wouldn't everyone in position to score on a kickoff then not just run out of bounds at the one-yard line?
Claiborne, having a good season for a top 5 pick rookie CB or a disappointment thus far?
About as you'd expect for a rookie CB picked that high. Some great, some really bad. Learning.
How awkward will the conversation be between Lurie and Reid in early January?
I think "emotional" is the better word. There's a pretty strong relationship there.
So, you're saying I start RG3 over Rodgers?
How can you be in Week 12 and still have both? Make a trade, man!
Dan - just jumping in so sorry if I missed a similar question already.I'm a HUGE Reid apologist, think he's a fantastic coach (except for clock management) and great at building teams. That being said, I think its time for someone new. He's just not the answer right now. I've heard some rumors Josh McDaniels might be looking to get another shot at Head Coach... think he'd be a good fit? gotta like having the weapons the eagles does...
Oof. McDaniels. A disaster on every conceivable level in Denver. Can't imagine they could sell that.
Dan: Can you put on your GM mask and tell us HOW the 'Skins can address their needs, (the DBs you mentioned earlier plus O-line, LB and WR depth), given their cap penalty AND the fact that their injured tight end and OLB Orakpo will want big, new contracts?
They still have a bunch of cap room, the penalty notwithstanding, and cutting a guy like Hall will give them more. And Davis and Orakpo are just going to have to settle for less. That's life when you're coming off a season-ending injury.
It seems that all of the comments seem to say Washington benefits most from the short week. What about the other side of the coin? Dallas is used to the short week and Washington and the ROOKIE Qb by the way aren't! Thoughts??
This is true. And they don't have to travel.
Why do you believe that there is a 5 team gap between the Giants and the Seahawks in your rankings?
The Giants are a Super Bowl champion who's won this year in San Francisco and Dallas. The Seahawks haven't won anywhere besides Seattle and Charlotte. And they also didn't really beat the Packers.
Seem to be getting the occasional angry Seahawks fan in the chat this year Dan. What's up with that?
They're very upset that I don't acknowledge that the Seahawks are the best team since the '85 Bears. I'm stubborn that way.
I'm kinda confused by what Ian says... Isn't being used to short weeks called being "tired"? Washington is younger, especially on offense, seems like that gives them an advantage in a short week.
No, it makes sense. Dallas prepares for this game the same way every year. They're used to it. His logic is fine.
Odds Donovan McNabb going to Steelers ?
Stop it. Just stop.
Who IS the best team since the '85 Bears ?
Well, it was actually the '07 Patriots, but you know how that ended.
The cows havent brought pressure against rookie qbs this season (for reasons totally unimaginable to me), sans second half of the browns, do you think they come after RG3?
Well, they need to do it judiciously. I think the tape from the Carolina game should be instructive. They didn't just tear off after him on every play. They collapsed the pocket just enough to keep it narrow and keep him in it, limiting his options. You can't go all-out after him with pressure, because he'll just run away. He's really, really fast.
Why do you make a joke out of prideful Seattle fans? I was born in Dallas but grew up in Seattle. Both are my favorite teams. So far, Seattle has been much better than Dallas, and made a fool of them head-to-head. They beat New England, and even though they got lucky vs Green Bay, they smothered that offense and held them to 1 TD. Of course their fans will be angry when you put a clown car team like Dallas ahead of them.
But... I didn't... And... that wasn't the question... Right?
Dan, the Packers have recently let Blaine Gabbert and John Skelton (!!!) both throw for 300 yards against their defense. And no, none of it came in garbage time. Is this the week the Giants offense can finally get on track again?
Sure, but they'll need an answer on defense for Rodgers.
Schefter reporting the Steelers plan to sign Plax.
Well, looks like the Steelers will win the Super Bowl, then.
Are you going to watch the Thanksgiving game from your home or in person at the Cows/Skins game?!?
Will not be at the game.
Whats your opinion of Crazy Harbough "going with thw hot hand at qb"
Do the skins sign Asomugha to replace Hall if the eagles cut him?
I don't know. He looks shot, to me. But I'm not in Shanahan's head, and it'll depend on what he thinks as well as where else Asomugha draws interest.
You said "They're very upset that I don't acknowledge that the Seahawks are the best team since the '85 Bears. I'm stubborn that way." You know no one is saying that in Seattle. Wanting the respect you deserve is different from expecting to be called the best team of all time. The irony is that WASH and DALLAS are the kings of hype who cry when you point out how avg or flat out bad they really are.
Whatever, dude. Mix in a road win and get back to me.
If you raise the price of an email stamp 1¢ can mailbag be saved?
Mailbag as you knew it is dead. But it will be replaced with a new, more modern option that will be more fun and enlightening for all. Details to come.
"What?" -- 49ers coach says he hasn't decided who to start at QB (Kaepernick or smith)
Milk was a bad choice! The man punted Baxter! The bad man!
who's worse Kingkev or jake from Raleigh?
Jake from Raleigh is a chat legend. Kingkev is a flash in the pan.
Its that time isn't it Dan?
Yeah. See y'all next week. Enjoy your turkey.
