Chat with Ashley Fox

Ashley Fox
  (3:01 PM)

Hello everybody. Good Tuesday to you. Let's get started. I will try to get to as many questions as possible.

Jim (Dublin, CA)

Is there any chance Andy Reid can keep his job after this season??

Ashley Fox
  (3:03 PM)

I don't think so, Jim It's really playing out in the most ugly fashion in Philadelphia. There is fan apathy, Reid fatigue as they call it here in Philly. And I think it is time for a change. I'm not sure the Eagles will win another game this season, given what they've shown so far. Jeffrey Lurie doesn't want to fire Andy Reid, but it's probably a foregone conclusion at this point.

Jordan (Casper, Wy)

Ashley, before the season I asked you if AJ Green was a top three WR along with Calvin and Fitz and you said to give him a little more time until we group him with those two. Have we waited long enough now?

Ashley Fox
  (3:06 PM)

Thanks for circling back, Jordan. I honestly haven't sat and ranked the top five, top 10 receivers. But he has 64 catches, 911 yards and 10 touchdowns, the most of any receiver in the league. Is he better than Reggie Wayne or Wes Welker or Brandon Marshall? He has more upside. So I guess, in a roundabout way, that's me saying yes, he probably is in the top three. He just needs time to show the consistency over a couple of seasons the way Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson have.

Paul (Madison WI)

How do you square ranking 4 AFC teams in your top 5 with the pretty obvious domination by the NFC in inter-conference play? And shouldn't you also treat the Packers as having a 8-2 record in terms of Power Rankings, even if the NFL insists they lost the game in Seattle?

Ashley Fox
  (3:09 PM)

That's a good point. I thought about that in hindsight about the AFC. Same with the Packers. There should be an asterisks next to the Packers record. I really had a hard time deciding just who should be No. 1, and actually No. 2. I think what the rankings show is that it's really wide open among the top 10 teams or so. You can make a good argument to put Green Bay first. Denver, too.

Seth (PA)

Let's keep a few things in mind before people keep saying how outrageous it is for Kaepernick to take over for Smith. 1. Clearly 49ers front office was not 100% sold on Smith by letting him test free agency. 2. Numerous times this season, while Smith was healthy, Harbaugh went to Kaepernick for down field throws, and even to run the 2 minute offense at one point. Harbaugh drafted Kaepernick, not Smith. 3. Kaepernick gives you advantages in athleticism, arm strength, and size. If Harbaugh has developed Kaepernick into an anti-mistake QB like he did with Smith, wouldn't it be foolish not to go with him given those other advantages?

Ashley Fox
  (3:11 PM)

I don't think it's outrageous at all. And the beautiful thing now is there is a reason for a quarterback controversy, or whatever you want to call it, in San Francisco. Harbaugh said he's going to go with the hot hand. Well, how can Kaepernick not have the hottest hand after the way he played last night. He certainly looked ready. It was one game, so you can't lose sight of that. But it was an impressive debut. I bet he sticks with Kaepernick, but we'll see.

Bryan (Asheville, NC)

The Cowboys O-line is a mess... but is it serviceable enough to stay in, and possibly win, the NFC east race?

Ashley Fox
  (3:13 PM)

It is a mess. Here's the thing about the Cowboys: Their schedule is cake and the Giants have Green Bay, Washington, Atlanta, New Orleans, Baltimore and Philly left. That's at least five tough games, the Eagles notwithstanding. That's the biggest reason why Dallas has a chance to win the NFC East. They could be only half a game back by the end of business on Thursday. Are they better than the Giants? No. But they have a significantly easier road.

Dave (Charlotte)

Before the season started, the Patriots were becoming a national punch line when it came to a signing of a tight end but with Hernandez and now Gronk missing significant playing time, it looks they were smart to sign all those tight ends, don't you think?

Ashley Fox
  (3:19 PM)

Sorry about the delay. I got locked out for a second. To your question, absolutely. What do they have, six tight ends on the roster? Now, no one is like Gronkowski, who has 10 touchdown catches this season and some ridiculous number going back to the start of last season. They will miss him, particularly if he is gone closer to eight weeks instead of four. But Hernandez coming back will help.

Matt (Denver!!!!)

Von Miller D.P.O.Y!!!! That is all!

Ashley Fox
  (3:20 PM)

Matt!!!! He's making a great case. Aldon Smith officially put himself square in the race last night with 5.5 sacks. Wow. He was a beast. But yes, Von Miller is a huge reason, along with your quarterback, why the Broncos are doing as well as they are.

Ash (Leaf-Ox)

Any insight as to why Joe Flacco is a Top 5 QB at home and a bottom 5 QB on the road? Is it play calling, poor performance, what is it?

Ashley Fox
  (3:23 PM)

A bottom five? That's a little harsh. But your point is duly noted. He is appreciably better at home than on the road, which is a reason why it is incumbent on the Ravens to get home field advantage for the playoffs. They know it. Now, he didn't play great Sunday. If he had, the Ravens would've beat the Steelers pretty handily. As to why he's better at home than on the road, I have no idea why.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Why has Jerry's World essentially become a home game for the visiting team? The Cowboys enjoyed such an advantage at the old stadium, and now virtually have none in the 2 billion dollar palace. Your thoughts?

Ashley Fox
  (3:26 PM)

Well, it is a destination game, that's for sure. It's a popular place for opposing fans to go because everyone wants to see it. The place is off the hook, and not necessarily in a good way. The video board is amazing, but all of the other circus-type stuff to me detracts from watching the game. It's nuts. When I go to a football game I want to watch football, not stare around at all the other stuff going on.

Walt (Denver)

you think Denver will #2 seed?

Ashley Fox
  (3:30 PM)

If the playoffs started today they'd be the four. They have the same record as the Patriots and are a game behind the Ravens. Can they overtake those two? Sure. They have a very, very favorable schedule. If Houston plays the way they did last week against Jacksonville, the Broncos could even catch them. So yes, I could see them as the 2 or the 1.

Deven (Buffalo, NY)

What kind of record do the Bills need to have to make a playoff push?

Ashley Fox
  (3:33 PM)

Well, the best they can finish is 10-6, and I don't think that's going to happen. They've got to play at Indy, which is very good at home. Then they've got Jacksonville, St. Louis and Seattle at home, followed by at the Dolphins and home against the Jets. I just don't see them winning out when they haven't won more than two games in a row all season.

Declan (New York)

Is Eli's arm back to normal? I noticed a lot wrong with him the last two games.

Ashley Fox
  (3:35 PM)

I don't about all the arm talk, but he has not played well the last three weeks and he hasn't thrown a touchdown pass in a month. His completion percentage over the last three games I think is around 54 or 55 percent. His yards are down. And he's thrown four picks. So the bye week came at a good time for him. They've got a bear of a schedule, as I mentioned earlier.

brandon birdsboro pa [via mobile]

What is it gonna take for the eagles to play great like they used to be.?

Ashley Fox
  (3:37 PM)

Like they used to when? Part of 2010? That was really the last time. I'm afraid it's going to be a while before we see the Eagles having the success they used to have so consistently. Could be a couple of lean years rebuilding. I doubt Vick will be back next year and I'm not sold on Foles. They're going to have to find a franchise quarterback, and the best way to do that is the draft. They're going to need a high pick, and we all know how you get one of those.

Danny (Morgantown, WV)

Can the Redskis pull off an upset and takethe NFC East? They 4 Divisional games leftto use to their advantage if they win!

Ashley Fox
  (3:39 PM)

I don't see it, but you're right, they've got the Cowboys twice, starting Thursday and one left against the Giants. I really think the Giants are going to end up winning it. But Washington is heading in the right direction. They have a franchise quarterback, which helps.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Who's your Comeback Player of the Year, Peyton Manning or Adrian Peterson?

Ashley Fox
  (3:42 PM)

I love this debate because what both of those guys are doing is absolutely unbelievably amazing. Adrian Peterson is a freak of nature, on pace for something like 1,800 yards. And Manning is playing lights out. Let me stress, I have not decided who I am going to vote for. We've got six more weeks of the season, but to me, Manning missed an entire year and then had to switch teams, adding another degree of difficulty to what he's doing. And he had four neck surgeries. I understand he doesn't take anywhere near the same pounding as AP. But it's remarkable nonetheless.

Walt (Denver)

who's to blame - a.j.smith or norv turner?

Ashley Fox
  (3:43 PM)

I think they're both in trouble.

Ashley Fox
  (3:43 PM)

And I'll put it to you guys: AP or Manning?

Brett (Atlanta)

As a Saints' fan, I really hope the Niners start Kaepernick instead of Smith. As impressive as he was last night, I would love to see how he does on the road in one of the NFL's most hostile stadiums.

Drew (DC)

How many years until the Colts and Redskins meet in the Superbowl?

Ashley Fox
  (3:44 PM)

That is a brutally tough place to play, you're right. So loud.

Ha. What a thought. Maybe one day. You know what I'd like to see? A Patriots-Broncos AFC title game this year.

My internet is brutally slow today. I apologize.

Big Poppa (San Fran)

Harbaugh v/s Harbaugh in Superbowl! Possibility or Fantasy?

Ashley Fox
  (3:46 PM)

Total possibility. Lord help their parents if that is the case.

Drew (DC)

AP. Manning has been doing his things for years and his game has always revolved around the cerebral part, not the physical part. Having a year off didn't hurt, plus we don't have much to compare Peyton's injury to. What AP did is truly unprecedented and we have other incredible running backs from previous years to measure what he's done.

Ashley Fox
  (3:47 PM)

Good points.

Walt (Denver)

Manning!!!!!

Ashley Fox
  (3:47 PM)

Ok.

Vinnie (ATL)

Is it too early to start talking about coaching changes and rumors? Quite a few of interesting jobs could be open: Philadelphia, Cleveland, Sand Diego, Washington, Tennessee, Carolina... What are the winds telling you?

Ashley Fox
  (3:49 PM)

It's never too early to start talking about coaching changes. I'm not buying Washington at all. Philly yes. Cleveland probably. San Diego likely if they don't turn it around. Tennessee I'm not sure. Carolina wouldn't surprise me. Kansas City possibly. Maybe a wildcard or two in there, too. There will be significant turnover.

Dan (LaCrosse, WI)

With the resurgence of Jermichael Finley do you feel the Packers are the favorite in the NFC?

Ashley Fox
  (3:51 PM)

They are among the favorites, yes. We thought going into the season that they would be there, and look, there they are, 7-3* and playing well. You've got to put San Francisco up there, too. And I still like Atlanta, although they've been a little shaky lately and don't have the playoff success of some of the other contenders. Would it surprise me if Green Bay was playing in New Orleans in February? Not at all.

Kevin (Reno, NV)

Plaxico found a job, does that mean there's hope for T.O.?

Ashley Fox
  (3:53 PM)

I doubt it. But how about Plaxico back in Pittsburgh. Crazy, huh? I always thought of the three -- Plaxico, T.O. and Chad Johnson -- Plaxico would be the one to get a job. Owens is done. Has been for a while.

Rod- AP? (Tulsa)

His name is AD NOT!!! AP.. He was named this by the coaches and himself because he brings it all day !!!!! No letting up !We Oklahoma fans would love for the rest of the nation to get his nick name right !!!! Thank you Ashley

Ashley Fox
  (3:54 PM)

I was just using his initials.

Shako (Detroit, MI)

Will the Lions ruin my Thanksgiving meal again this year vs. the Texans?

Ashley Fox
  (3:54 PM)

Isn't it part of Thanksgiving that we eat, watch football and watch the Lions lose?

Jeff (Memphis)

Am I crazy, or are the Saints starting to play reasonably decent defense. They obviously will never be the 49'ers or Bears on D, but with their offense, they just need the occasional turnover or 3 and out to make the difference.

Ashley Fox
  (3:56 PM)

You might be crazy. That defense is dreadful, but the Eagles made them look pretty good a couple of weeks ago. But you're right, they don't have to be spectacular because the offense will put up a ridiculous amount of points. So there's that.

Eddie (Milwaukee)

You're always just a play away from Finley's next drop. So inconsistent.

Ashley Fox
  (3:59 PM)

Wisconsin checking in.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

He was actually given the nickname by his father. If the guy is going to correct you, he should get his facts correct. I'm an Oklahoma fan too.

Ashley Fox
  (3:59 PM)

Ok. Thanks.

Ashley Fox
  (3:59 PM)

Alright, sorry for the brutally slow internet connection on my end. Everybody have a great Thanksgiving. Enjoy the football. We'll do it again here next week.
