Chat with David Ching

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Hottest & the Coldest Georgia College Football Game that you Have Been to?

David Ching
  (12:01 PM)

I'd bet the hottest was a South Carolina game in Columbia. But the Buffalo game this year was really unpleasant. The coldest was probably when I was in college. The UGA-Auburn game that was the first SEC game to go to OT in 96. It was freezing. I think it might have rained too.

David Ching
  (12:02 PM)

And by the way, hi everybody. Hope you're all ready to have a good Thanksgiving. Let's get going.

Bill Russell (Altamont, New York)

Let's assume for a moment that Georgia's defense will play they way they have the last several games; Tech is already saying that they are coming after Murray early - do you think that this will mean that Georgia has many one on one opportunities on the outside and jumps up early - or can Tech take the game to Murray and create the confusion they need to win the game?

David Ching
  (12:16 PM)

Really sorry about that. My internet connection crashed and I had to restart. Let's get back to it.

David Ching
  (12:18 PM)

I would expect Tech to have great difficulty with Murray and UGA's receivers. The Jackets are one of the nation's worst pass defense teams. Giving up I believe 251 yards per game through the air. And I doubt they've played a team as good on offense as Georgia yet. I will give them credit, though, that they have a knack for getting interceptions. I read in the game notes that they have picked off a pass in 10 straight games, which is the longest streak in the FBS.

Matt Hickman (Springfield, MO)

Assuming we get by GA Tech, how do you think UGA's secondary holds up against Alabama's passing attack if the pass rush can't get to McCaron?

David Ching
  (12:19 PM)

I don't think many secondaries hold up against a decent passing attack if their front isn't creating at least some pressure. So no.

Jarvis Jones dreads (jarvis's head(Americus,Ga))

Hey David! All we hear about for Defensive POY, and the Heisman is Te'O. Why not us!? We have significantly more sacks,Tfl's, forced fumbles, fumbles recovered,et! And in less games. Why no love?

David Ching
  (12:20 PM)

You're getting more than enough love and deservedly so. Te'o has the perfect storm of playing for Notre Dame, having an interesting story and being on an undefeated team. I don't think Todd Grantham would trade Jarvis (I mean you) for anybody.

Rajon Rondo (Boston)

What's up with the national media just assuming it's going to Bama in the title game. Doesn't this DAWGS team remind you of the 2007 squad--which surged at the right time and was probably the real best team in the country by the end of the year?

David Ching
  (12:22 PM)

It does remind me of that team. But I think you could reasonably argue that we don't really know what this Georgia team is capable of. They haven't exactly been beating national powers during this hot streak. The Alabama game will be by far their biggest test of the season because Alabama has proven over several seasons that it is legitimately one of the nation's best programs, if not THE best. This is relatively new for the players on Georgia's team.

Joshua Collins (Villa Rica, GA)

Everyone talks about Georgia's schedule and how "easy" it has been, but if you put half the teams we've played on a school that's a non-SEC teams schedule, all we would hear about is how tough they made thier schedule. Why the double standard? It's not our fault tradtionally good teams are having bad seasons.

David Ching
  (12:24 PM)

I don't think that comparison holds water. Yes Georgia can't do anything about Auburn and Tennessee being bad, but aside from Florida, who has Georgia beaten that should impress anybody? It's a reasonable criticism because the schedule was overwhelmingly in Georgia's favor this season.

John (Savannah )

Hey David, I was wondering with Georgia's current commits and the returning players, who do you foresee being their starters next year.

David Ching
  (12:27 PM)

Well, the offense should pretty much be the same. The question there is whether Murray returns. Only seniors in the group are King and Brown, so Bennett, Mitchell, Conley, Scott-Wesley, Tibbs...the list goes on at WR...should be OK. Defense is where it gets interesting. They're going to have to replace almost their entire starting seven most likely. We could go on for a while on that one. I like Garrison Smith, Jordan Jenkins, Damian Swann, Amarlo Herrera out of that group for next year off the top of my head. Will be interesting to see what happens with Josh Harvey-Clemons and whether Jonathan Taylor jumps in and makes an impact on the line.

Billy (Cartersville, Ga)

David I am, as many are, a huge Dawg fan. But I am also a stat guy and a realist. I think that "IF" the Dawgs play their "A" game across the board.....they can beat anyone. What chance do you think they have in beating Bama, and if they do, do they get a shot at the National Title?

David Ching
  (12:29 PM)

First off, if they beat Alabama, they will play for a national title. I think it's a game Georgia CAN win, but you're right, they'll have to play their best game of the season. The Florida game was a great model of the toughness necessary for the defense, but the offense played pretty poorly for much of that game. I've been saying that Murray and the OL are the keys to that game. If they play well, it's going to be a competitive game.

Lee (New York, NY)

David, given the losses in the receiver corps (Bennett, Brown) will the Dawgs be able to spread out the 'Bama secondary as well as A&M did or was that mostly Johnny Football running the show thus the pressure mounts on Murray? Go Dawgs!

David Ching
  (12:32 PM)

I'd say that had as much to do with Manziel's ability to move around as it did with the WR corps. Losing Bennett and Brown obviously hurt, but if there was anywhere on Georgia's roster where they could absorb a depth hit, it was at WR. They haven't missed a beat with Malcolm Mitchell stepping into a bigger role. He's got a TD in four straight and Tavarres King has one in three straight. Conley has also done pretty well in the slot. I think they're fine at WR.

Jared (Athens)

What does Georgia truly need I look out for with Ga Tech?

David Ching
  (12:34 PM)

There's no secret with Georgia Tech. If you can figure out how to slow down their option, you're golden. BYU did a good job against it a few weeks ago. Georgia did a pretty good job against it last year, too, and if they do again, they'll win comfortably.

Nick (Atlanta)

Why is everybody overlooking the dawgs? They are already assuming Alabama winning the SEC.

David Ching
  (12:35 PM)

Like I mentioned earlier, Alabama has won two national titles in the last three years and Georgia was 6-7 two years ago. Alabama would be favored against anybody right now because they've been the best program in the country over the last season or three.

Larry (Washington, DC)

Do you have Georgia in your preseason top 5 next year?

David Ching
  (12:36 PM)

That's a good question Larry. Probably not right now, but we don't know who's going to return. My assumption is that they'll lose almost their entire starting defense and that's not a good formula for a preseason top-five ranking.

Mark (Cookeville, TN)

What are the chances Aaron Murray goes pro next year?

David Ching
  (12:37 PM)

I'd say they're decent. He's had a very good year. If he wants to leave after the season and his draft status matters to him, he'd better have a great game against Alabama and in the bowl. NFL teams are going to measure his readiness by his play in big games, I'd think, and he was pretty awful against South Carolina and in the first half against Florida.

Rex (Norcross)

How cool is it that despite us having a 35-7 loss on the schedule, Richt still voted us #1 over an undefeated ND team that played a tougher schedule. That alone is worth a contract extension in my mind.

David Ching
  (12:38 PM)

Richt didn't vote Georgia No. 1. And Notre Dame is going to get exposed in January if not sooner.

Skeeter (Athens)

This year, it seems like cut blocking has received a ton more media attention leading up to last week and this week for obvious reasons. But it's been going on forever. Why all the sudden attention like it's some new blocking method we have to overcome?

David Ching
  (12:39 PM)

Well, it seems particularly prevalent against Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech's option offenses. But you're right, it's not like it's something brand new. Most teams cut block to some extent, including Georgia.

Josh (Georgia)

Short and to the point. Who takes it UGA plays BAMA in Atlanta?

David Ching
  (12:41 PM)

Are you asking who wins? I think Bama is probably the best team in the country so I'd pick them. But I think it's a game Georgia can win.

Skeeter (Athens)

Shouldn't the ACC just cancel their Championship game this year? I mean, having a likely 6-6 team in the game is just embarrassing.

David Ching
  (12:42 PM)

It's not a very good football conference. They could say the same thing about SEC basketball. Remember when a UGA team with a losing record won the conference tourney a few years back? I'm sure ACC hoops fans were laughing at that.

John (Tennessee)

Speaking of 2007, if we beat Tech, beat Bama (or SEC West representative), do you think there is any chance that UGA falls in the polls and is left out of BCS title game?

David Ching
  (12:42 PM)

None.

Travis (Between the Hedges)

Who's your defensive player of the year?

David Ching
  (12:43 PM)

I'd take Jarvis Jones. Imagine what his numbers might look like if he hadn't been playing through injuries and missing two games.

William Kimbrough (Atlanta, GA)

First things first, we have to beat Tech! Assuming we do, how do you think Georgia's offensive line can hold up against Bama's defensive front?

David Ching
  (12:45 PM)

I mentioned that earlier, that's the biggest question of that game for me. I think the OL has done a pretty good job this season for the most part, but they were overwhelmed by the best defensive front they faced this year. They've got to hold up against Alabama for Georgia to have any shot in that game.

Eric (Atlanta)

I heard with Chip Kelly moving to the NFL, the ducks were eyeing Coach Richt. Any Chance we could pull Chris Peterson from Boise?

David Ching
  (12:46 PM)

Richt is not going to Oregon. No chance. It will be interesting to see if ANYONE can lure Petersen from Boise, though. I think schools have expressed interest before and he hasn't left yet.

Andrew (Knoxville)

I have heard and read a lot of sportswriters talking about how Georgia benefited from losing early, so we had time to climb back in the rankings. To me, that makes no sense, if Georgia's only loss came against #12 South Carolina on the last day of the season, we'd still be a one-loss team playing for the SEC championship...and in my mind, a 1-loss SEC champ would always go into the national championship game.

David Ching
  (12:47 PM)

I think that's probably true, as well. But they lost when they lost. That just seems like idle chatter.

Tarlie Chrippi (God's Country)

I'm as big of a Murray supporter as anyone and even though he's shown a significant lack of consistency in big games, I'd still take him over most other options (including Hutson Mason). Lately he seems to be side-stepping the inevitable "Draft" question - what is your gut on this? I've always had the feeling his was a four year guy regardless of projections...

David Ching
  (12:49 PM)

He's already a four-year guy considering he redshirted in 2009. I know that's not what you meant, though. If he plays great in Georgia's remaining games, he might as well go. He's not going to grow four inches between now and next season. If he plays average or worse against Alabama or in the bowl, I'd lean toward him staying. But I'm not sure.

Joseph (Roswell)

David, ya think CMR has the guys fired up to come out early and put up a bunch of points so the starter dont have to continue to endure chop blocks from the option O-lineman? I sure dont want to see us keep it close and have to keep our guys in there for all four quarters.

David Ching
  (12:51 PM)

I'm sure he'd prefer that. They've got to get Tech's offense off the field to do that, and that's easier said than done. They've been very business-like since the Florida game, so I expect to see them steadily pull away as the game progresses as they have for most of the last month.

Steven (Kingsport)

Vol fan here dropping in with some observations. 1: Murray is having every bit as good a year as Johnny Football 2: The Dawgs as much NFL Sunday talent playing on defense at all three levels as anyone 3: Malcolm Mitchell should be talked about in the Heisman race with his play at both CB and WR 4: Alabama/Georgia is a pick 'em. Thanks

David Ching
  (12:53 PM)

Thanks for stopping by Steven. KC Joyner wrote a column expressing the same sentiment on Murray just yesterday. 2. I agree, there might be eight or nine guys on their defense that will be on an NFL roster next season. 3. That's a stretch, but he has made an enormous difference at WR in the last month. 4. I think oddsmakers would disagree with you, but I think it's going to be a great game.

Rex (Norcross)

I presumed that our vote in the Coaches Poll came from him, who do you think voted for us then?

David Ching
  (12:54 PM)

No clue. He said he didn't vote for Georgia, though. I don't think they have transparency in their poll until the last one of the season.

James (Jasper, GA)

Wasn't Bama's defense exposed to an extent during the A&M game as well as the LSU game? What do you think UGA needs to do to take advantage of what they saw in that game?

David Ching
  (12:55 PM)

Protect Murray. And he can't play tight. They have to hit the plays when they're there, which they didn't do against South Carolina.

Brian (Georgia)

Hey, if Georgia does win the SEC, can we beat ND in the NC game?

David Ching
  (12:55 PM)

Whoever wins the SEC championship game is going to be the national champion.

Joseph (Creswell Dormatories)

Dave, is it sad one of my biggest fears is the time frame between the SEC title game and BCSCG if we beat Bama? Im terrified the gravity of the moment might get to some players and we lose a starter or two for the big game. Can the coaching staff keep them under control over the long break?

David Ching
  (12:56 PM)

I don't think that will be a problem.

dawg haire (dothan, al)

Since Georgia played an potion team last week, do you think Richt and his coaches are spending time planning for Bama?

David Ching
  (12:58 PM)

Not at all. I'd bet some of the GAs have spent a lot of time breaking them down every way possible, but I'd think they were too superstitious to look past Georgia Tech considering the stakes of the situation. And Tech's offense is really tough to defend. They've been playing pro-style teams all year.

Joshua Collins (Villa Rica, Ga)

Isn't it about time everyone leaves Richt off the hot seat for an extended period of time now? Or of he can't pull it off against Bama(assuming the Tech win) do you see "fans" start calling for a change again?

David Ching
  (12:58 PM)

I'm sure some will if they lost to Alabama. Lots of people out there with more time than sense.

kevin (marietta)

As a Georgia fan i love our team and our coach mark richt i think hes a good guy and coach but if uga losses to gt or alabama do you see georgia fans getting more angry for a new coach do you think georgia would replace him, i mean im tired of settling for the capital one bowl i want titles not just sec titles but national titles

David Ching
  (12:59 PM)

That's a loser mentality. Already expecting a loss.

aggies rock (what tarlie put)

Can georgia win the sec? and hopfully go to a b,c,s bowl.

David Ching
  (1:00 PM)

Sure. They're good enough to beat Alabama. Gotta play their best game of the season, though.

jim (jacksonville)

Don't you think Tech will when again this year

David Ching
  (1:01 PM)

I think Tech is very much capable of winning this year. I don't think they will, but their offense is good. If Georgia screws around, they can lose.

David Ching
  (1:01 PM)

I think Tech is very much capable of winning this year. I don't think they will, but their offense is good. If Georgia screws around, they can lose.

Jake (GA)

Why does Georgia always have slow starts? They started slow in every game except Auburn.

David Ching
  (1:03 PM)

Not in every game, but in most, you're right. They started great against Vandy and Tennessee, too. (Although, yeah, the second quarter didn't go so great against UT). I'm not sure what the deal is on the slow starts. That's definitely something they'll have to avoid against Alabama.

Tyler (Toledo)

I know it seems popular to talk about Alabama's exposed defense, but can UGA's stop Bama from scoring either?

David Ching
  (1:04 PM)

It's a good question. I think they'll do fine against Alabama's offense. My biggest question is whether they can move the ball against Bama's defense.

Joseph (Jacksonville)

Thoughts on Swann as the most improved player on the team this year? He seems to be all over the field, and making some big time plays.

David Ching
  (1:04 PM)

I think he's had a great year. Garrison Smith belongs in that class, too. Both of those guys have been big difference-makers down the stretch.

Skeeter (Athens)

Are you a half full or half empty guy? I hear Barbara Dooley is taking Derek's firing much harder than he is. I say, look at the bright side, at least you don't have to wear that ugly orange attire anymore.

David Ching
  (1:05 PM)

Ha. Depends on the day. I think he deserved better than he got, but you've got to win. He knows that. He inherited a huge mess and cleaned it up some, but not to the extent necessary to stay, I guess.

ND Fan (South Bend)

Thanks for letting me know we are going to get exposed. Just keep your head down there in the southeast. I don't know if you realize it but they play good fball in other parts of the country too. PS. Put another FCS team on the schedule next year

David Ching
  (1:06 PM)

You're welcome. Just don't waste your money traveling to Miami.

Skeeter (Athens)

How many people can ask - "Can Georgia win the SEC?" in one chat?

David Ching
  (1:06 PM)

It's up to at least five or so. That's OK. It's the question on everyone's minds right now.

Joseph (Atlanta)

As an alumni, what do I have to do to get SEC Championship tickets?! This is absurd....400 dollars for upper deck?! Come on man!

David Ching
  (1:07 PM)

Is that what it costs? Holy cow. I'd prefer to watch from home anyway.

David Ching's twin (Dawgpound,USA)

Hey David! Gimme a score for Sat against Tech.

David Ching
  (1:07 PM)

I think I predicted 34-20 on our board yesterday. I'll stick with that.

kevin (marietta)

i wouldnt say thats a loser mentaility, , i think will beat tech pretty easy , and i think the bama game is 50/50 , i just was wondering what are you thought on mark richts status if the one or both of the games go south on us which i know is unlikely

David Ching
  (1:09 PM)

I think he's safe. Back-to-back division championships don't grow on trees.

Tybee (Athens)

I really haven't heard B. Smith's name called a lot this year. Are opposing Qb's just targeting Swann?

David Ching
  (1:10 PM)

He hasn't played as much lately. He's been the third corner. And he hardly played on defense against GSU. I'd expect that to continue this weekend, although I'd imagine he might slide in there on offense here and there again.

ND Fan (South Bend)

I will. You should come too and watch us play Alabama. Richt might learn a thing or too.

David Ching
  (1:10 PM)

That's fine.

Doug (Silver Creek, GA)

What does UGA need to do defensively to be successful in the SECCG against Alabama? And David, the cheapest SECCG tix are more expensive than the most expensive ACCCG tix (on Stubhub), so ruminate on that for a bit.

David Ching
  (1:12 PM)

If they're tough up front, they're going to give Alabama problems. Bama has a great offensive line, but I think they'll still have some difficulty with Jarvis Jones. If that's the case, I think Georgia will have some success on defense. And I think it's obvious why tickets are so cheap for that ACC game.

Joseph (Atlanta)

CMR gets most the heat publicly and on the national scene, but do you think CPJ could lose his gig if we blow them out Saturday and they get crushed in the ACC Title game?

David Ching
  (1:13 PM)

No clue. I don't think they'd fire him, but I have no idea. He's got to recruit better or they're never going to do much better than hover around .500.

Matt Fortuna (Already in Miami, FL)

Notre Dame wins by 7 over any SEC team in the national title game...that's a guarantee

David Ching
  (1:14 PM)

Haha. I doubt Matt thinks that. It will be a fun month of December.

ND Hater (All Over)

Who let the idiot ND guy in here? Those fools seem to be everywhere. He can enjoy his bridesmaid status or if he prefers "also ran."

ND Hater (All Over)

Oh yeah, Go DAWGS!!

David Ching
  (1:14 PM)

He's welcome to his opinion. What kind of fan would he be if he wasn't confident in his team?

David Ching
  (1:15 PM)

And on that note, I think we'll call it a day. That was fun everybody.

David Ching
  (1:15 PM)

I hope you all have a fantastic Thanksgiving and we'll check in with you soon.
