Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Sorry I'm a tad late. On my way to Knoxville, Tenn., and the hills are blocking my internet signal. I apologize up front if I don't get through the hour. So what a championship for Brad Keselowski. What did you think? Let's get to it.

TG (PA)

Dave, Have a good Thanksgiving with your famly. Keep an eye on Ernie so he doesn't get the turkey again, he's sort of like those Bumpus dogs from Christmas Story. Oh Fudge!

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Ernie the dog is right behind me in the Jeep Cherokee. I may have to let him answer some questions if my wife doesn't slow down.

Matt (ny)

Hey Newt, thanks for the chats all year! I'm wondering how many wins you think Kenseth gets next year?

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

You're welcome. I'm going four five wins next year. What do you think?

Matt (ny)

How much longer do you think Stewart, Gordon, and Kenseth race? Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Gordon has said for three or four more years at least. Not sure on Stewart. He may one day decide he's had enough and just be an owner. I could see Kenseth going until he's 50.

Matt (ny)

Will The Rock ever get a cup race again?

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Unfortunately, no.

jesse (iowa)

Maybe Stenhouse winning Back to Back nationwide titles is bad for him. the other drivers to do that havent done squat in cup.

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

You must be referring to Dale Jr. And he has 19 wins, a Daytona 500 included. A lot of drivers would like that.

jesse (iowa)

what happens to brian scott?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

He'll shop his talent and family money around. He was trying to get in with Phoenix Racing but that isn't happening.

Christine (Tottenville, NY)

Hey David - I'm not necessarily a Brad K fan but I agree - he will be good for the sport. We need some new life and personality getting publicity. I'm hoping we can back this championship with one by Clint...another great personality to transcend the sport! Who else (aside from Jr obviously) would be great to have as a champion in terms of publicity/popularity outside of Nascar's current fan base??

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

You mentiond the top two in Brad K and Clint Bowyer. There are others that we haven't gotten to see their full personality come out. Still think Dale Jr would be huge.

Ron (OH)

I just want to go on record and say that the Logano signing with Penske is a mistake by Penske. Logano will never be a top tier cup driver. He just doesn't have it between the ears.

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

I disagree. He won nine NW races this year, and I believe when he gets away from the pressure he was under to succeed in the No. 20 after Stewart left will help him flourish. Plus, Brad K will take him under his wing and that can only help.

Dan (NC)

Does Kurt realize what he threw away with his stupid words and actions? Penske wins the cup and Kurt is in bottom rung cars.

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

If he didn't he does now.

Mike (NC)

How soon until Tony Stewart and Danica get married?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

You could see her name surface with a driver in the near future, but it won't be Tony.

Dave (WI)

Your opinion of Ty Dillon wrecking? I'm all for hard racing, but the teammate to the eventual champion takes out his main competitor in the closing laps is a little to much for me.

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

At that point he was racing for the win. Teammates out the window. I'm all for that kind of racing.

Mike (NC)

Sure looks like Knaus choked in those last two races. Car just wasn't good.

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Knaus didn't miss the lugnut. He didn't cause the pinhole in the drive line. He and Johnson actually had the championship in hand until that and we'd all be talking about how Paul Wolfe and Brad K threw it away by not staying on the same pit strategy as the 48.

Ryan (WI)

What' up with the last name on the windshield next year? Is this iroc or Talladega nights? The rest I get

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

They want more driver identification. I'm not sure if that will help, but at least they're trying.

Joe (IA)

With the added pressure of not winning the last 2 years, I doubt that JJ can overcome that and get to 8 titles.

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

That definitely was one that got away. You could see in his face that it hurt more than others he lost early in his career.

Frank (GA)

Will Kyle fold under the pressure of being the 3rd best driver for his team and being a free agent at the end of next year? Another year and no wins for Kyle after Aug 31st even though he didn't have the chase pressure on him.

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Actually, I think he'll re-sign with JGR, thrive with Matt Kenseth as a teammate.

Mark (OH)

I must admit your last BradK article was very good. Also the Gordon article. Are you signed for next year with ESPN?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

I am back in 2013 and hopefully for the long-term. Love my job.

Mel (NY)

Hey Newt, do you see any current drivers starting a cup team in the next 2-3 years, maybe Gordon or Burton?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Don't see either of those. Dale Jr. considered one three years ago to keep Brad K in the fold. Probably can see Kyle Busch upgrading to Cup one day and driving for himself.

Lyle (PA)

Thank goodness we don't have to see the corporate favorite, egotistical, model for a wife, perfect persona Jimmie Johnson's face all winter. Brad is a breath of fresh air.

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

I agree Brad K will be great for the sport, but I disagree on what you say about Jimmie Johnson. He is a class act and should be given more credit for what he has done.

George (MD)

I doubt Brad asks Danica for a date anytime soon.

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Won't be Brad K.

Steven (IL)

With the rumor of Kyle Busch driving one of the JGR Nationwide cars, probably the 18, what is the future of the 54 car? Will he still be driving it part time or will there be a full timer in that car? What can you tell us?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Not rumor. Busch will be in a JGR NW car part-time as I wrote on Monday. Check out the story. The 54 will be driven, and this hasn't been reported, by Parker Kligerman. He will drive a fulltime season. Take it to the bank. Good move letting a young driver gain experience.

Jack (Little Bit Racing) (San Diego, Ca)

When Jeff Gordon retires, do you see him becoming a team owner with Hendrick equipment?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

He may pay some roll in Hendrick Motorsports, but not sure what that will be.

ted (alabama)

what did kyle busch mean by "I guess I need to start living a different life"

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Didn't hear that. What do you think it means?

matt (tennesse)

Looks like parker Kligerman is driving full time for KBM next year in Nationwide. Why is Kyle giving up seat time in his own ride? Also, do you think this is a good move?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Just said that. He's giving it up to let a young driver move up in the sport, and to give JGR a boost with its NW sponsors.

tyler (Michigan)

David, you may think Brad is great but I can;t stand him. People don't like Kyle because they say he whines to much but I think Brad is just as bad. Before long brad is gonna run his mouth to much and get put in the wall

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

All I can is you should get to know him.

Chris (Brunsiwck, GA)

On restarts, why can't Nascar just wave the green flag and let the two front row cars drag race to turn one and not worry about who gets to the line first. Too many games of laying back, spinning tires, teammates pushing, etc. Just make it simple. Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for the chats too.

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Thanks on the chats. Can't really answer why they dont look at your starts other than they've been doing it this way forever.

SCOTT (Charlotte)

A day after Danica's statement, ESPN has a "Hot Button" article about her and a article about who should be her next suiter very classy. Next thing you know ESPN will have a funny article about men with heart problems.

Dwane (Ky)

what is the latest on travis kvapil for next season?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Haven't heard any changes.

Chris (SC)

Since Danica is now single can you hook a brother up? Hahaha.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Sure, anything for you.

Dwane (Ky)

what is the latest driver changes for next season?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Well, Harvick already is signed for 2014 with SHR. Kyle Busch likely to re-sign with JGR. Kurt Busch I bet ends up at RCR in 2014. Way early to get me started on this. I need a break.

Tim (CT)

Does Chad Knaus step down at CC before Jimmy Johnson retires? It would be interesting to see how he performs without Chad.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

I believe so. Wouldn't surprise me -- and not starting anything -- if he stepped down before next season. Not because he's washed up, but because he may be at the point Ray Evernham was where he needed a new challenge.

Neal (Denver, CO)

Alright Newt, let's get down to brass tacks. How much longer do we "haters" have to put up with the folks who are trying their best to blow sunshine up our skirts about Danica Patrick? She can drive, but even her crew chief admitted she doesn't know how to race. If she doesn't win and doesn't contend for championships, will Bob Parsons do us all a favor and pull the plug?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

I suspect after a couple of years in Cup if she isn't doing well we'll see something happen.

Brandon (San Francisco, CA)

Hey David, how freakin' excited are you to watch those trucks sling some dirt at Eldora next year?!? I really like the direction the series is going with racing on dirt and trying to add some great short tracks like Greenville-Pickens Speedway and Myrtle Beach Speedway to the schedule...Don't you?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

It's not a done deal. Tony still has to put up the money for SAFER barriers. But I agree, if that happens with the other new tracks the Truck Series will be the cool series of the sport.

Dwane (Ky)

is bk racing going to have three teams next season or are they staying with two team?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Haven't heard of expansion.

nick (arizona)

lot of people have said Regan Smith should have still be in the Furniture Row racing car, but Kurt just got 3 straight top 10's, the firts time ever for that team. I predict he will make the chase next year! and a lot of people will eat crow

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Regan was making strides after they hired new personnel near the end of the season. It is unfortunate he didn't get to finish what he started. There's no denying Kurt is a top driver, though.

frank (wisconsin)

Danica and Ricky Stenhouse jr?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

I can't say I haven't heard that one.

Matt (ny)

I think he'll end up with four, two of which being in the chase to guide him to the title. And it's a shame on rockingham. That track has so much character. I've raced it on iracing, that simulator/game Dale Jr. supports. It's an absolute blast.

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Maybe one day it will get a NW race. Would that suffice?

Ross (Criami)

Who would it be to ask Danica, a recent Nationwide champ?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

My pat answer on this. I can't say I haven't heard that one.

Matt (ny)

Stenhouse and Danica. Mark it down now.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Marked.

Ryan (WI)

now that Bud is @shr in 14" Tony has nine races to fill. Any Chance bud is on Smoke's car next year?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Nope. RCR owns the rights.

ted (alabama)

He said it after the Nationwide race. After he failed to close again. Maybe he wants to reduce his role in KBM?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Maybe he wants to win some NW races.

Jack (Little Bit Racing) (San Diego, Ca)

Any rumors about drivers in NHRA? I don't think John Force has many years left driving.

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Don't I have enough to keep up with in the NASCAR rumor mill?

Brandon (San Francisco, CA)

Penske needs to sign Ryan Blaney to drive the 22 in the NWS full-time next year, and Kyle Larson needs a full time ride in either the trucks or nationwide as well...I see both being real contenders in the Sprint Cup series in the near future, don't you?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

I'd like to see that as well, but not enough sponsorship to do that yet. Unfortunately, that's the era we live in.

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

I suspect you'll see improvement, maybe win a few more races. And I wouldn't be shocked to see him contend for the title. I just felt Kenseth was a better choice.

NICK (SAN FRAN)

I know this is an NHRA question but did Ashley Force retire?? I can't find out if she did or is planning on returning

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Haven't heard if she has.

Ross (Criami)

Does Kyle feel like a failure after not winning in the only two series he cares about?

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

C'mon. You know his goal is to win a Cup title. I do suspect he feels like he didn't have the success at KBM he had hoped for, but it's still a young team.

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

The mountains on the drive to Knoxville are beautiful and I have turkey on my mind. Thanks to all for a great year of chats. Sure I'll see you here a few times during the offseason. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
