Aloha everyone, thanks for coming to the chat today. We'll take NBA questions first half over and then do NBA Draft in the second half. Let's roll ...
Do you think the more Anthony Davis is out, the more likely Damian Lillard is ROY? He's been a stud!
Lillard has been fantastic. But unless Davis misses significant time this season, it's his to lose. He's been in the Top 10 in PER all year. His impact is being felt on both sides of the ball. But Lillard is more than worthy of Rookie of the Year honors.
The Jazz seem to be overloaded on front court talent with Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, Derrick Favors, and Enes Kanter. There are also many trade rumors out there about trading one or more of the Jazz big men. Which Jazz big man or big men gets traded?
It won't be Favors or Kanter. The Jazz are trying to figure out how to give them more time on the court. Jefferson or Millsap, maybe both. From what I can gather, both will be on the market, and Jazz will see what they can get. But clearly the trend is to find ways to get Favors, especially more time on the court. He's the future.
Are there any logical trades out there for Pau Gasol?
I don't see it right now. The problem for the Lakers is that Pau is a very good player. However most teams aren't willing to give up great assets because they are worried he's going to leave in free agency when his contract is up. Also, given his age, teams don't really want to trade young for old. So unless the Lakers feel at some point that moving Pau is addition by subtraction, it's going to be hard to justify trading him for 50 cents on the dollar.
Should the 76ers try to keep Andrew Bynum for a long term?
Way too early to tell. But unless the Sixers are convinced at the end of the season that Bynum's injury is one that affects his career in the long-term ... you sign him. He's one of the two or three best big men in the NBA. You don't let an asset like that walk.
Should the Cavs try to trade Anderson Varajao to a contender?
Given how well he's playing, he might fetch a pretty high price. If they can get a young potential All-Star in return for him? Might be a good idea. But then again, I'm not sure that player is out there right now. Racking my brain trying to come up with a big that a team would trade that fits the criteria.
When will Andre Drummond start getting serious run for the Pistons?
They're bringing him along slowly which is probably the right move given his age/maturity level. But they're thrilled with that they are seeing. Based on his performance early on, he was easily a Top 3-4 pick.
You see the Knicks making any kind of moves at the trade deadline?
The Knicks feel like getting back Amare and Shumpert are their mid-season deals. With that said, Amare has been and will be available for a deal if a team is willing to swallow his non-insured contract. Keep reading the Lakers have interest. That would really shock me.
I thought Thomas Robinson might be the steal of the draft at #5. Numbers aren't great (although minutes are pretty low). Thoughts on him so far?
He's been disappointing. He's struggling to get good shots. But the Kings are so dysfunctional. They have talent, but it's been poorly put together. Team really needs new ownership and management in the worst way and then they need to really weed through what they have. I'm not sure there's a player on their roster that's untouchable.
What do you think of the Nets so far?
I've been pretty impressed and Nets ownership and management have to be thrilled. They really wanted a contender in their first year in Brooklyn and the East is SOOOOOO weak this year, there's a chance they could finish with the second best record behind the Heat. The Knicks and Celtics are possibilities. Maybe Philly if Bynum gets healhty. I don't think any of them are beating Miami, but if the Nets make it to the Eastern Conference finals, that's a huge vindication for them.
Do you see the wolves as contenders once Rubio comes back?
For the playoffs? For sure. For the Western Conference crown? No
Should OKC have traded Ibaka and kept Harden?
The consensus thinking is that they should've traded Perkins to free up the space. If Perkins was a no-go, then Ibaka. Then Westbrook. I think Kevin Martin has done a good job replacing some of the scoring off the bench ... but that wasn't the only think Harden provided.
Whats Jrue Holiday's potential? How excited should sixers fans be about him?
Love him. And he's only 22 years old. He's going to be an All-Star someday. Think the Kings wish they had taken him over Tyreke Evans? They flirted with it, but Petrie felt he needed an immediate impact player to save his job. That's the sort of Short-Long thinking that has crippled the Kings.
Do you think David Kahn cuts his losses and trades Derrick Williams? Can he get much for him if he tries?
I think he tried this summer and the value was already waning. Getting worse at this point. Remember what he got for his other top lottery picks Wes Johnson and Jonny Flynn? Not saying Williams is in that range yet, but he's moving in that direction.
Is Mason a better Plumlee an NBA prospect than his brother Miles?
He better be ... I'm not sure Miles is an NBA player. Mason is No. 12 on our big board. I think there is just so much more game there. I don't think Mason is going to be a star in the NBA, but he could be a very good back-up. Maybe even a starter.
Is Anthony Bennett out of UNLV a legitimate NBA prospect, or is it too early to tell?
For sure. He's one that a lot of people are sleeping on. I think teams felt a little bit like he was a tweener coming into college. but he's got so many great qualities ... I just think he's very versatile. A potential lottery pick on our Big Board.
Chad, your thoughts on Archie Goodwin...nba position, nab comp and where you think he'd be taken in the draft.
Coach Cal has been comparing him to a young Russell Westbrook. It's not a bad comp though a bit lofty. Excellent speed, athletic ability. Can really get to the hoop. Crafty finisher. Plays out of control and has poor shot selection. Not sure if he's really a point guard ... sounds a lot like Westbrook coming out of UCLA.
Trey Burke looked awesome last night. What are the knocks (if any) on him?
Agree he looked really great last night. Lack of elite size and questions about whether he's a special passer. But I think he should be ranked higher than most scouts have him on their boards. Right now he's a second round pick. Probably should be a little higher. He's gotten better. Was virtually flawless against NC State.
Noticed Jeff Withey isn't even a first rounder on your big board right now? Its obvious his offense could use work, but a shot blocker like that has to have some first round value right?
He actually is ... No. 27 on our Big Board. And yes, having his shot blocking skills amounts to a lot. I'd be shocked if he didn't go somewhere in the mid to late first round.
Are the Cavs a Shabazz Muhammad/Otto Porter/Alex Poythress away from being a playoff team?
Yes if they keep Varejao. Muhammad or Porter would be a great fit for them. Poythress is a little too similar to Tristan Thompson.
Other than Zeller, does IU have any other NBA prospects right now? Hulls to short/slow, Watford too small/soft, Ferrell might but needs a few years... maybe Oladipo if he can make a consistent 3?
Zeller is the big name and he was fantastic last night against UNC. Given that his brother Tyler played for the Tar Heels and also was excellent running the floor, how could UNC keep forgetting to get back. Zeller cherry picked them for at least 10 points. Rest of the group are marginal prospects. Oladipo is the best ... but on second round bubble right now.
What are Erick Green's odds of making the pros? He's been a top guard in the ACC the past two seasons.
He's been fantastic this season. Question for him is what position he plays. Really a tweener right now. But NBA teams love scorers and he's just been awesome this year. If he keeps it up all season, he could sneak into the first round.
After seeing Michael Carter-Williams in his increased roll with cuse, do you think he can be a lottery pick this year. A 6'6" PG with passing and scoring ability should have NBA GM's drooling right?
GMs taking a wait and see attitude, but if he's really a point guard (and he's showing some serious skills right now there) he's going to move up another 10 spots on our board. He's at 20 now ... and scouts are very intrigued. Can't wait to Syracuse-Arkansas on Friday ... Carter-Williams vs. B.J. Young could give us the best glimpse yet into the prospects of both players.
Where is Alex Len's stock right now? Has to be climbing towards that top 7-10 range no?
Been No. 5 on our Big Board since the first week of the season. Still has an outside chance at the No. 1 pick. He's 7-1, skilled and strong. Those guys don't come along very often. Will be watching him very closely. There is a lot to like there.
What is Brandon Paul's upside as an NBA player? He seems much improved this year.
Terrific athlete. Shooting the ball very well this year. He's undersized for his position, but could be a Shannon Brown type player at the next level. He really helped himself in Maui. He's showing a lot more poise and maturity this year.
Macadoo has to be the most overrated prospect this year, right? Sean May was a flop, and he was light years better than macadoo.
McAdoo hasn't helped himself the past 2 weeks with a lackluster outing in Maui followed up with a weak performance against IU. His stock is dropping ... he's got the body and he can do some things, but isn't as skilled as you'd like him to be and he just really hasn't gotten better this year.
Any Euros worth noting for the draft?
Rudy Gorbet of France has a 7-foot-9 wingspan!!!!!!! That will get you noticed. Lots of scouts like the Croatian Dario Saric, but he just signed a new contract with Cibona and probably won't be coming to the NBA for a few years.
When I hear someone's size at 7-1 is getting him buzz as the #1 pick I cringe and think, this must be a bad year - someone is going to talk a GM into the next kandiman
Gotta watch them play. Len actually reminds me a bit of a young Ilgauskas. Nothing like Olowokandi.
Deshaun Thomas ... Does he need to keep rebounding to even sniff the end of the first round or will he just be a 2nd rounder no matter what?
Tough call. He's such a lethal scorer. Amazing really. But he doesn't do much of anything else, isn't an elite athlete and not sure how well he plays with others. Will be a tough call for a NBA team because, believe it or not, great scorers are hard to find in the NBA.
Who's the best mid-major prospect you've seen this year?
If UNLV counts then Anthony Bennett. If they don't, C.J. McCollum of Lehigh. Scouts have been a bit disappointed in North Texas' Tony Mitchell in the early going.
Do you think that alex poythress of the university of kentucky has a shot to be the number one draft pick in the 2013 NBA draft
I do actually. Not all scouts agree. In fact, a few don't like him at all. But in the positionless NBA, he's got a great motor, is an elite athlete and finds a way to score. Remember, everyone was down on MKG as a prospect early in the season too because he couldn't shoot. Poythress is the real deal. To me, he's been the best player I've seen this year in the early going.
Is Nerlens Noel the next Dwight Howard?
Ummmmmm .... no. Maybe Marcus Camby?
Gotta run everyone. Thanks for coming to the chat today. We'll do it again next week. Aloha!
