Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:08 PM)

Greetings. How is everyone? Thanks for stopping by.

Kyle (Los Angeles)

You're sitting at a bar minding your own business when JJ Watt and Terrance Knighton walk in and without invitation start eating the chicken wings off your plate, who would you hit first?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:09 PM)

I'm not a hitter. I'm the guy looking to get hit and sue. I think they both like me, too.

Gabe (Sugar Land)

Do you think JJ Watt is still the favorite for DPOY with Von Miller and Aldon Smith making a recent push?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:09 PM)

I do. It's closer than it was. But he's still the leader in my eyes.

Kevin [via mobile]

Do you think the Jaguars overpaid for Poslusnzny?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:10 PM)

When you look at deals like Aaron Kampman and Clint Session, it's hard to argue against Posluszny's money. He's a great player.

Q (H-town)

Is andre johnson back?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:11 PM)

Was he gone? I don't see how a guy that just had the most productive back-to-back games in league history could be judged not to be back.

Chris (Circle City)

How uncommon is that an athlete like Josh Chapman takes so long to recover from a procedure which seems pretty routine, these days? Could playing on the damaged knee have done more damage complicated his situation?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

People are going crazy with this. First off, the guy was being cast as some sort of savior. We have no idea how good he will or won't be. Secondly, ACL repairs are more common but they hardly qualify as routine. Rehab is a big deal. He's not so far removed from it that we should speculate about troubles. He could get a standard cleanup scope along the way somewhere, too, if he hasn't already. Here's hoping he's good to go for minicamp and we can finally see him.

bill (bloomington)

is kareem jackson a better corner right now compared to johnathan joseph because of his hamstring issues?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:20 PM)

I wouldn't say better. But he's good.

rt (burg)

do you think the recent troubles from the D in houston make them vulnerable come playoff time especially if they end up facing NE at some point?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:21 PM)

Absolutely. If they play the Patriots and they are both playing like they have the last couple weeks, Houston's in trouble.

ricstone7 (Dallas, TX)

Hey PK, I brought up around week 4 or 5 that if Luck kept his development on that pace, if my Texans should be/could be more worried that Luck would have 14 weeks of tape on us or if we should be/could be more excited that we have 14 weeks of tape on him. By then we should have a playoff spot clinched, any thoughts on how big those games may be if we meet in the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:21 PM)

I don't see the Colts challenging much in the playoffs because of defensive issues.

Josh (Jackson TN)

If the Titans only win 1 or 2 of their last games what the chances that Munchak is canned? I keep hearing that he's one of Bud's favorites but Munchak keeps on saying that we are "all" on notice.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

His status will definitely be up in the air.

KW (Texas)

Wade keeps saing Barwin is playing well, even though the numbers dont show it. Is he just protecting his player? I think Barwin is losing alot of money in a contract year.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:24 PM)

I wrote about this yesterday. Thanks for reading. Has Connor Barwin cost himself a lot of money?

Sean (Edinburgh, Scotland)

Now that the Honey Badger has declared for the 2013 Draft, do you see the Colts making a run at him? Powers and Davis are good but pretty injury prone, surely it makes sense to look at a top talent like that. Also, were the Colts interested in Babin?!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:24 PM)

They were not interested in Babin, nor should they have been. He's shown he's strictly a 4-3 guy. I'm sure they will look very closely at corners.

bill (bloomington)

back to kareem jackson, would you put him on the #1 WR of the opposing team if a game was today?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

Depends on the quality of the No. 1 and the health of Joseph. Agianst the Titans, I think you could comfortably play sides. Against the Patriots, Welker is a slot guy -- more of Brice McCain's issue -- and Gronkowski is the big concern.

Derek (Nasty 'Nati)

Is it too early to hope, as a Jaguar fan, that the signing of Babin could mean improvement from Mincey, Lane, et al?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

Why not hope? They can't all produce less, can they?

Morgan (Gainesville, FL)

What do you think the Jaguars are going to do at the QB position in the future? Henne has been a slight improvement, but I don't think he is the answer.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:28 PM)

Every Jags personnel question depends on who the GM is.

Blueman (Indy)

A waiver question, when the Jags signed Babin they owe him the remainder of his contract,so does this let the Eagles of the hook for the money they owe him and do the Eagles still take the cap hit for the bonuses and such for next year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:30 PM)

Eagles take an accelerated hit on guaranteed money. Jaguars pick up what's left to be paid in terms of bases and scheduled bonuses. PFT reports he can opt out after 2013.

Blake (Arkansas)

Is the play-offs completely out of the question for the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

Technically they are not eliminated. Realistically they aren't getting in.

Brandon (New Mexico )

Paul, you didn't fill in the blank? Or was that on purpose?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

Pass rusher.

Derek (Nasty 'Nati)

With that being said: What are your thoughts on the GM situation for Jacksonville if Henne/Shorts/Blackmon continue to perform at or near their current level? In my humble opinion, he absolutely needs to go...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:33 PM)

Keeping Gene is an awfully tough sell. Four years is enough time to get a read on what a guy can do.

Devin (Glenn Dale, MD)

So pretty much if Babin succeeds he'll find a playoff team next year and if he fails he'll be a jag. However, either way this is going to be 6 games of him playing his hardest.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:33 PM)

He can't leave unless they let him go. Can get out after 2013, I believe.

Jake (Florida)

With the Colts injuries at Safety, what are the chances they call-up Bob Sanders for another go at it?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:34 PM)

Less than zero.

Brian (Cville, VA)

You, Me, and the Jags all thought Blaine Gabbert was better than Henne in the preseason. What has allowed the offense to run that much better through him? Is Blaine still the better QB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:35 PM)

First and foremost they are pushing it downfield more and he's brought a new energy and leadership. Henne's certainly better than a healthy Gabbert right now.

Doug (MD)

If/when the Jets fire Rex, think Pagano would/should try to grab him as DC?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:35 PM)

Don't see him replacing his DC after a year when they knew they had issues. Also, Pagano is really the DC. Ryan would end up under an offensive head coach.

Brandon (New Mexico )

If Munchack is out, who is in? Cowher, Dungy, Gruden?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

Not a big name, I wouldn't think.

Brian (Cville, VA)

My dream situation for the Jags is this: Khan lets go of GS/MM. Eagles let go of Reid. Bring in Reid and give him full control. Could that situation play out and do you think Reid would want to come to Jax?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

I'm way wary of full control, for anybody. Where has it worked well recently? Reid could be popular. Jags will have a tough time getting a popular guy.

Leon King (SE.GA)

hindsight being 20/20, how much better off are the Titans to pay/keep Finny and move Jason McCourty to safety? Helps out 2 areas, keeps a leader+ tone-setter in the secondary...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

He's a corner.

Paul (Jax, Fl)

Jumping on Bandon's question. Biggets need for Jacksonville is _________?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:38 PM)

Pass rush. Still.

Jeff (Tyler, TX)

Do you see the Texans winning their next five games?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:38 PM)

No.

Leon King (TV)

I wish Cowher/Gruden would land coaching jobs so people would stop attaching them to every open/soon-to-be-open coaching gig...

Brandon (Houston, Tx)

The Jags and Titans look to be in disarray. Is this the Texans and Colts division for the next few years?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

Things change very quickly from year to year.

Choir Boy (Jacksonville, FL)

Is Babin a bad seed?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Not in my experience.

Leon King (SE.GA)

D. Loggains at OC: A) a legit shot for a bright young mind or B) why not? Can't get any worse...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Absolutely A.

Julian (Miami)

Is Jacksonville such a bad place that Babin, if he's comfortable in the system and paid the money he's due, would want to immediately opt out as soon as possible?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:41 PM)

No. Depends on a lot of factors. Primary among them if he could make more by opting out. Right now he probably could not.

Blueman (Indy)

If the Jags current front office is still the same come draft day,how interested would they be in trading down? I know this years top picks probably don't have the value of last year because the lack of a QB "can't miss" prospect but the Jags need as much talent as they can get.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

Not knowing the draft order, who's coming out, etc., you want me to predict first round draft trading in November? Pass.

Jake Locker (Tennessee)

Is my progress hampered by the departure of Palmer in any way?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

No sir.

Brad ((Houston))

The Texans were missing 6 starters on defense last week and once they moved Jackson to cover Calvin Johnson his numbers went way down. If the Texans can get their Defense healthy are they going to be favored over NE and Denver in the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

Are they playing at home? If so, yes.

Brandon (Houston, Tx)

Do you think fans should be allowed to vote for probowl? I think Antoine Caldwell being on the ballot and Duane Brown not being first shows the average fan's football knowledge

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

I don't, really. But it only counts a third and coaches and players will be able to fix such errors.

Doug (MD)

Do players commonly swap jerseys? Arian Foster tweeted about it but I've never heard of that. What do they do with them?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:45 PM)

Yes. Most guys frame them up for their game room/bonus room.

Derek (Nasty 'Nati)

If pass-rush is still JVille's biggest need, what would be next? DB? OLB? OT? We are so bad in so many areas, it's hard to tell...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:46 PM)

Pass rush is first AND second. Pass protection is third to me.

Devin (Glenn Dale, MD)

If Babin works out the Jags needs are: RT, linebacker (depth), interior O-lineman (several of which are on IR), running back (depth), and they need a developmental QB. Those are all somewhat easy positions to fill and address. If the pass rush ever gets there am I crazy to think that this is a team that can be fixed fairly easy?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

You're ranking depth somewhere as the second need? No way. They need upgraded starters. And they've overspent at LB. They need pass rushers, plural. Maybe Babin is one. They still need way more. Right tackle is good as No. 2. They do need LBs with Session likely done and Smith potentially gone. Don't spend a lot there, though.

John (Duval)

I'm surprised at the Titans letting Palmer go. A year ago he was being mentioned as a possible head coaching candidate for other teams? What happened? Also, love the Babin pickup.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

Who was mentioning Palmer as a potential head coach? No one I saw.

Brad (Houston)

Could the Colts realisticly be favorites over Houston in the AFC South next season? What would need to happen for this to be the case?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

Major departures from Houston, major free agent additions in Indy.

Brandon (New Mexico )

How much has the loss of Mariani impacted the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

Close to zero.

John Boy (Houston)

Aside from more pass rush, what do you think the Texans biggest defensive gap is?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

That second inside linebacker spot next to Cushing, even with a bunch of healthy choices, isn't great. And they can be better at DT.

Brandon (New Mexico )

Can you hear it, now? Manti chants is Nashville would be music to my ears

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

Taking a linebacker that high is not the way to go, I don't think. But he sure would solidify the Titans.

Guillaume (Paris)

Just read your piece about Mularkey vs New GM. If Jacksonville keeps Mularkey, does it limits the potential GM interested in the position like Gabbert limited the potential Head Coaches willing to come to coach the Jaguars in January ?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:52 PM)

If you've got a choice between being a GM with Mularkey as your choice or not being a GM, I think the first option is preferable.

ED (INDY)

Should the Colts target better suited Defense or address a LONG TIME need at RB?!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:52 PM)

They can do both.

David (Utah)

With the Texans doing so well is this the year the world ends and should we believe the hype of Dec 21 2012? If they get home field advantage does it assure the end?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:55 PM)

You do know that the Mayans didn't factor in leap years, so the date is actually past already?

Leon King (SE.Ga)

True or False: biggest reason for Titans disappointing year vs 2011 is lack of young players developing as quickly/much as expected...

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:57 PM)

Defensively yes. Also overestimated some players becoming strengths.

Freddie (work)

Did you choose to be the AFC South beat reporter or were you assigned?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:57 PM)

I live in Nashville and covered the Titans and the NFL for the paper here for some time. When ESPN created the blog network, I was considered for and hired for the division in which I was rooted.

Derek (Nasty 'Nati)

Which upcoming FA's on the Jaguars roster do you consider the most important to re-sign? I'm thinking...Cox, G. Jones, and Meester top 3?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:58 PM)

Cox is very important, but man he needs to stay healthy. I'm not a fullback guy at all, so as good as Greg Jones is I don't fell his role is that important. It's time for Meester to retire.

Brandon (New Mexico )

If Peyton had landed in Nashville, the Titans would be _____________?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

...a lot better.

Ken (Clarksville)

Will Titans receivers & Jared Cook be a different group now with Palmer gone ?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

Possibly. But don't expect too much too soon.

Ismael (TX)

The past 2 games of the Texans defense has been horrible to say the least. Do you think the defense will be back to normal in these next weeks?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:00 PM)

They need three things: Get healthy, get pass rush, play worse offenses. They may only get No. 3 Sunday.

Pot Roast (Jville Baby, NOT IN THA CLUB)

So PK, up until this year I was considered a gem of a find for the Jags in the 3rd round. I was thinking big paycheck after my rookie contract is up. How am I viewed now and what kind of money can I get?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:01 PM)

You've practically disappeared. (Hard for a large man.) You don't even start, and first down should be your best down. You are not getting the big contract you could have gotten. If the GM changes, you might even be elsewhere.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul you posted my question but I think the site screwed up and I never got an answer. What do you think the Titans can salvage out of the rest of this dumpster fire of a season? Realistic best case scenario?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:03 PM)

I think 3-2. I want to see Locker improvement and a less confused offense.

David (Utah)

Why does every Jag fan want to just dump Gabbert now, he is signed for 2013 for cheap and can be a backup to whoever gets the job. Maybe one more offseason and he fixes his timing issues.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:04 PM)

He should be on the roster next year, I would think.

Blueman (Indy)

Should the Colts look at what the Eagles did when they had huge cap room and do just the opposite and avoid signing stars and spend for improved talent across the board?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:05 PM)

The Eagles have masterfully handled the cap for a long time. There is a lot to want to copy there, not run from.

Ted (Chicago)

Any predictions as to how Mercilus will perform as Reed's replacement over the next few weeks? What have you thought of what you've seen of him so far?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:06 PM)

I think he's good. I think it's another example of great and well-placed depth for Houston.

Blueman (Indy)

Would having to listen to Texan fans gloat if they win the SB be worse than the end of the world?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:07 PM)

The Texans winning the Super Bowl would be great for me. Readership would skyrocket. Gloating would be better than whining, too.

Whitney Cummings (LA)

Paul, what's the deal? I landed a new talk show on E! Are you still into me or have you moved on?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:08 PM)

I am completely in on you and enjoyed the show. The sitcom is, sadly, bad, however.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:09 PM)

OK folks. We're all done. Enjoyed it. Thanks.
