Tulane? Really? I can't name you one sport Tulane is even slightly relevant in. UCF-USF need to become a package deal, as the 4th largest TV market in the nation and bolt this conference. Agree or disagree?
To where, exactly? A conference has to be interested first. And what are you selling besides TV market with UCF-USF package deal? Probation? A 3-8 season?
What is your prediction for Thursday's defacto conference championship game?
I picked Rutgers this morning. So for those who are going to ask, you can click here. http://espn.go.com/blog/bigeast/post/_/id/39885/big-east-predictions-week-14-2
When does conference expansion end? Tired of hearing about who moved where. And, does Syracuse deserve a top 25 ranking? All of their losses are to teams going to a bowl game.
Paul, I wish expansion would end right now so we can focus on these games. I thought it was over a few weeks ago, but I was wrong and I am not even going to hazard a guess now. And no, you do not deserve a ranking when you go 7-5. I don't care what the BCS standings say.
Don't be surprise if UConn, Cincinnati, East Carolina, and either USF or UCF end up in the ACC by 2015. Lots of smoke of GT, FSU, Clemson, and either NC State or UNC leaving the ACC by 2015.
I mean if Boise State is playing in the Big East ...
I am starting to get excited about the new Big East football set up - adding more regional feel. Navy and East Carolina have developed a nice rivalry and I think things will heat up with Temple and Navy in the future. With the new set up, can the Big East continue to be a major player in college football?
Vinny, I give you the grand prize for being the only person in this great nation excited about the new Big East football set up. Maybe Mike Aresco can hire you to start spiffing up the image. Here is my take: the BE is not a major player now, so how can the league "continue" to be a major player? Perception is everything these days and the BE just took a sucker punch to an already flagging perception. I am not sure how that changes, even if Cincinnati goes undefeated every year.
I am really saddened that Uconn has been left out of the expansion picture, though I saw the writing on the wall as soon as Maryland left. My biggest concern now is that we are going to be 2 or 3rd down the list after Cincy and South Florida if the ACC ever expands again. Am I just being a pessimistic New Englander like my father or is there real concern there? We went from favorite to everyones whipping boy.
I honestly have no idea what the future pecking order is going to be. My advice is PLAY BETTER FOOTBALL.
BYU and the Big East equals...?
Nada right now.
C'mon . . . a prediction, please!!! If you had to guess, what conference(s) are UC and UCONN in in 2015?
The Big East West Universe?
What do you think the television value of the Big East is now that Rutgers and Louisville are gone?
Not as good as it was when negotiations opened in September.
I think perception begins to change when two 9-2 teams playing for a conference title (two teams worthy enough for the BIG and ACC to take them) start getting respected and talked positively about by the media. Media drives perception.
Scott, those two 9-2 teams CANNOT LOSE TO PITT AND UCONN to earn that respect.
Greetings from tonight's ACC/B1G challenge - the Big East Championship! Do you agree that if Kyle Flood wants to be a long-term answer for RU, he's in a nearly must-win game tonight? It's not enough to win games w/Schiano's players, he needs to go where Schiano didn't, the BCS. Given what he loses on D for next year, and where RU goes after that, this may be his best chance.
This is a must-win game regardless of his future job security. You are absolutely right in that he has to get this team to win a game with high stakes on the line. Schiano was unable to do that. Flood is 0-1 after last week. He has got to get this one done, especially with the move to the Big Ten looming.
First, Are you attending tonight's game? Second, Its GAME DAY ANDREA!!! Lets all make a stop at the grease trucks and make our way to banks of the old Raritan! Third, Do you see the RU Defense Playing more coverage as 'Ville's running game has been hit hard due to injury? Also, With NOVA, is it mental now? Or has the ultra conservative play calling not given him the confidence he needs to be a good to great QB?
Hi Aaron! Unfortunately, I am not going to the game tonight, we have it covered with the fine Kieran Darcy from ESPN New York. As for the game itself. I think the RU defense is going to come after Teddy. They have to. That would be my game plan. Third, I think the play calling has plenty to do with what has happened with Nova. And when he is given an opportunity, he seems so scared that he is going to make a mistake. That Kent State game really did a number on him.
Why wasn't ECU chosen as an all sports member and with UofL leaving, does that now open the door for ECU to become a member in all sports?
Don't think the overall sports program is strong enough.
Any updates on who the big east will be looking to add out west now, they have to be a hurry to keep BSU and SDSU happy and not heading back to the MWC.
No updates there, Shawn.
Hi Andrea! What's the advantage for Boise and SDSU to go to the Big East. Is an east coast television package featuring Tulane and Temple really that much more valuable than a conference featuring Boise, SDSU, (maybe BYU), CSU and Air Force?
Yes it is, Ralph. It's about the TV $$.
I think the only chance Louisville has of winning tonight is if rutgers plays like they did againt Kent State and turn the ball over alot. What are your thoughts?
Well, they could also win if Rutgers plays the way it did last week vs. Pitt.
AA, should Cincy just pull back on funding football and concentrate on Basketball again? I think we been dealt a hand that has little future.
That is ridiculous, Robin. Why would you focus on a non-revenue sport like basketball?!
It is all about perception and presence and the Big East has lacked a presence in areas where football is King (aka the south). The ACC is now being called a joke with GT and FSU in their championship game and the ACC is getting dissed for lacking a true football identity even with the addition of Louisville - a basketball first school. I think the Big East can capitalize off of the ACC's weakness in the future.
Yeah but you said it yourself, the ACC is not a part of the Big 4. The Big East cannot concern itself with the ACC. It has to compete with the Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC first and foremost.
what happens Kent State Wins tomorrow, and and if they are higher ranked then either Rutgers/louisville does Big East not go to BCS bowl?
No, I just wrote on this a little bit ago. If Kent State finishes in the Top 16, they get an automatic spot. The Big East DOES NOT LOSE ITS SPOT. It just means that the BE would most likely head to the Sugar and not the Orange Bowl.
If Rutgers wins, are they rooting for Kent St to win so they can go to the Sugar Bowl? Personally, I would love to see how they fare against the top talent in the country, instead of another BE/ACC matchup in Miami...
Adam, I watched the entire game between Florida and Florida State, and I can assure you that Rutgers would much rather face the Noles than the Gators.
Ucf is a sleeping giant. Largest school in the country, in a major market, with top shelf facilities. Was hoping the move to Big East would get them closer on par with uf, fsu and um. Sad to see what is happening to big east
I have heard that sleeping giant line for years now. Wake me up when UCF is making a run like Kent State.
I think the Big East should have been more proactive when it looked like the B12 was in trouble. Trying to take Kansas, K-state Baylor and Iowa state. If this could have been pulled off we'd still be a relevant conference.
OK, UC fan, what did the Big East have to offer them?
do you think Rutgers will be relatively competitive in B1G early on?
John that is a great question. I have gone back and forth on that one. My initial reaction to the news was that this was not a good move from a competitive standpoint. Rutgers can win the BE on a yearly basis. I just don't know that Rutgers can win the Big Ten on a yearly basis. But at the same time, this program is in better shape than the bottom half of the Big Ten. It is tough to predict how Rutgers is going to look in 2 years, but Flood is going to have to pick up where he left off last year with recruiting. That is going to be huge.
Oh no, much like the George Mason games back in the day, I guess we will have to prepare ourselves for the invasion of East Carolina fans to the Verizon Center for basketball games. Oh, I forgot, they are a football only member. Not a jab at ECU but just want to say welcome to the Big Mess I mean Big East ECU. Lots of respect around here for the underdog Pirates.
You have a funny way of showing it!
Andrea, Bill Self at Kansas spoke publically an agreement was in place for 5 Big 12 teams to go join the Big East (including KU) if Texas and OU left and went to the PAC 10. That didn't happen, but it was close.
IF THEY LEFT. There is no way the Big East was going to get those teams in without Texas and Oklahoma leaving. That was my point.
Who do you think the next C-USA school to get a Big East call up will be? My money is Tulsa because they are a private school and would fit into the western division nicely.
Why does it have to be a C-USA school? Still think the BE has to look further west than that.
Can you make a case for Justin Pugh to be Offensive MVP for the conference? Things seemed to turn around for the Orange after he returned to the lineup?
I cannot make a case for him over Teddy Bridgewater. Even if I tried.
AA you are probably the worst blogger ever and also a very biased person what local newspaper are you gonna work for when the big east folds???
Davis, you made my day you are so kind! I think there is an opening at the Delaney Park Press in my neighborhood. (I hope!)
A lot of criticism is being put on the BE, but looking at the past records of some of the new teams for 2013 (East Carolina and UCF) is the BE really going to be THAT bad of a conference next year?
We are not talking about next year, we are talking about in 2014. I have no way of knowing how good or how bad it will be. Because I have no way of knowing WHO WILL BE IN THE CONFERENCE.
Davis, you've got issues. AA must feel like the activities director on the Titanic at this point.
Do you think with the ACC talk and rumors of Coach Strong speaking with Auburn, will the players be able to focus on the game and not allow everything to be a distraction?
Great question, Bigg Edd. I think there are plenty of distractions on both sides. I think Charlie is savvy enough to address that stuff before the game begins. You would hope these players are competitive enough to want to win a BE title without letting ACC talk get into their heads.
Then you must have missed the SU/UL game!
Eric, you cannot base that award on one game. I do believe he threw for 424 yards in that game. Teddy was not the problem.
AA: I like the nbe. This way UC will get into the 6th BCS bowl every year.
But surely you want to be in a different conference, Mr. P!
I get the vibe that you are not a huge fan of the 2014 version of the Big East. Can you give us something to be excited about regarding the future of this conference?
Boise State and Cincinnati are two reasons, if they continue the recent success they have had. But it is hard to get excited about a future that is full of also-rans from C-USA.
What is your opinion of UCF joining the BE before everyone began joining? Was it a smart move or a desperate attempt to move up in the FBS?
What other choice did UCF have? Nobody else is knocking on that door.
ECU is a good add simply because of their fans. 50-K a game for C-USA football is darn good. But help me out on Tulane? Totally mystified. Can you help me understand it?????
If you are in Vail on this chat, shame on you! Go hit the slopes!! :) The Tulane add, to me, is mind-boggling. When I saw the news, I was in absolute shock. Honestly.
With the departure of Rutgers and Louisville can the big east still hold on to boise state? I see Boise State doing a TCU down the road. Your opinion?
I am not going to guarantee anybody's future in this conference beyond this season. That is as honest as I can be.
Why does Petrino's face pop in my head when I read about the Auburn thing and Strongs reaction?
You know what, John? I thought the same exact thing.
Given the uncertainty of our conference situation and the resulting recruiting hit we will take because of it do you think Butch stays?
That is a great question, one that I have gotten a lot in the queue today. I do not have a crystal ball and am not going to make predictions on what happens with coaches. But I will say I have wondered a lot about whether the news of this week will make a coach like Butch Jones more likely to leave. It is getting harder and harder to sell the image of a "competitive" Big East when you pretty much know you are going into every season without a real shot at playing for a national championship.
I have to say, I hate whats happening to college football. Im a West Virginia fan, and miss the rivalries with teams from the east (Va Tech, Pitt, Penn State, etc)...do you see these rivalries ever coming back?
I think everybody but the folks in charge are with you on that front, Dennis. I am not sure how the rivalries can come back on a yearly basis. I did see a future series inked today between Nebraska and Oklahoma, but we are not going to get to a return to the good old days, not any time soon at least. We can hope for a Backyard Brawl in the Pinstripe Bowl if Pitt becomes bowl eligible and things work out that way!
Do you ,think Strong takes the auburn job?
I honestly do not think that is a good situation, Stu. You are on the hot seat from the moment you take that job, and they will be expecting miracles right away. There also is a lot of "outside noise" so to speak. So I am not sure that is the best situation.
So at this point the best hope for a BE team looking to get out is for the Big10/Big12/SEC to declare open season on the ACC and then hope to get a spot in a depleted ACC? Do see any scenario where the ACC decides to add w/o an imminent raid?
If the ACC was going to add without an imminent raid, they would have done it yesterday. So I think the next time it happens is if there are more raids.
Does Syracuse improve or regress next season? by the way Syracuse>Errabody else in the BE!
Well, not Rutgers and Cincinnati, right Tim. I am going to hold off on my thoughts about next season until the year ends and I have a chance to look at the rosters and returners more closely. It does nobody any good for me to make assertions off the top of my head in a chat with 1,000 questions coming at me at once. So hang in there, we'll get to those questions fairly soon.
Heck by the time NE/OU plays again (8 yrs I think)will it be much of a rivalry game anymore unless they meet in the bowl season before that?
Great question, Melissa! Let's see, the freshmen on those teams would have been, what, 8 the last time those teams played?
Big Bearcat fan. At this point it seems like the best thing that could happen to us is complete madness breaks out and a spot opens for us at the table? Is it that simple?
Cincinnati is not going anywhere unless madness ensues.
AA, you bash UCF quite a bit it seems. Say they win Saturday and then beat an SEC team in the Liberty Bowl again. You going to give them respect then? They would beat up on Kent State tomorrow, and will probably win the Big East next year. Why are you so down on them?
I would like to see UCF string, oh I don't know, TWO good years in a row. That would help.
Do you think Bridgewater makes it through the game today alive?
Yes, I think he will remain alive, Dan.
Do you think that Pitt will pose much of a threat in the ACC next year?
Well, this is another looking ahead question. I am going to say that the Coastal Division is the place to be between the two, and I anticipate Pitt will be able to compete right away based on what I watched in the ACC this year.
It's a hard pill to swallow knowing that we pumped millions into our athletics programs (achieving great success along the way) only to get left out in the cold.
Yes, I understand that. Nothing about realignment is fair or fun. Unless you are a big winner like Rutgers and Louisville.
Tonight BE Championship game can really be a large step to bigger and better things in Piscataway. Long time since those 2-10 or 3-9 days.
AS long as there is not a step back as members of the Big Ten, John.
Hey Andrea, so tell me, how impressed are you with this year's Fresno St team?!
Rocky, terrific season for Fresno State, and news that Carr is coming back makes this team one to keep an eye on for next year! I am sure you are thrilled.
Pitt beat VTech this year like I predicted, next year Pitt will win the ACCCG! BANK ON IT!
OK I am writing that down.
What are your thoughts of the UCF-USF rivalry starting up again? Will it get alot of attention?
What is your definition of "a lot?"
Who is your pick for top QB in the BE, Ryan or Teddy?
Andrea---Louisville is 26th in the BCS right now and Rutgers is 27th. So--am I correct that regardless of the margin, Louisville will with the BE tiebreaker (BCS standings) and get the BCS bowl invite should they win?
Yes that is the assumption. Louisville would have 10 wins, too, and that would be the most of any team in the league.
Hey Big Guns, Question and thoughts, USF needs to fire Skip and I hear that the 2.5 million is a possible issue, I dont see it as much since its spread out 500,000 a year. But what if we did what Southern Miss did and sell one of our home games (Miami or Michigan St) back to them, Let them have the home game in exchange for 2.5 to 3 million. It would basically cover the cost to pay Skip off, Only thing we lose the home game. Thoughts?
Doug, I saw what Southern Miss did. That is going to be an institutional decision if they go that route. You know that I am not going to advocate for a coach to lose his job. Is he on the hot seat? Yes. But only Doug Woolard and Judy Genshaft can make that decision.
If Boise somehow climbs up 4 spots to #16 (unlikely but not impossible) will they necessarily play the Louisville/Rutgers winner in the Orange Bowl or could another bowl choose Boise?
No the Orange Bowl is locked into the ACC. So the non-AQ team would play the ACC champ in the Orange Bowl. That is the most likely scenario.
what did you, think of the uconn victory at louville? and do u think this helped their recruiting?
I thought it was a great win, Stu. I was extremely impressed. UConn has been solid on defense, but I thought that was its best performance of the season, particularly given the stakes. I am not sure if one games helps recruiting, though, especially with the news of the week. It's gotta be tough to recruit at a BE school right now.
People are nieve to think that Louisville was an attractive canditate for conferences. Had Maryland not left the ACC and they didn't need a replacement Louisville probably is stuck. It was funny to me all the talk of them going to the Big 12, if the Big 12 REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted them they would have invited them way before now.
Andrew, I think people believe Louisville was the most attractive candidate AT THIS TIME. The ACC had a hole to fill and needed a school. So they had to pick someone.
Are covering sdsu or a'm i in the wrong blog?
San Diego State joins next year so we will cover them in the blog then.
Andrea, you and a lot of other writers like to bring up Cincy's getting crushed by Florida in the 2010 Sugarbowl as rationale for the BigEast not deserving an AQ spot. Get a grip.
Ummm what? I never said that, Big T. I said there should be no AQs for anybody, period. Maybe you need to get a grip!
What's the deal with Gary Nova's decline this season? Do you think he plays well tonight and is he gonna be the future for Rutgers?
Well, I don't think the play calling has done him any favors. He has to have a good game, because Louisville is going to try to make him win the game. I honestly think he is scared of making a mistake.
Did you ever think you'd see the day when a team like Kent State could have a blowout loss to a winless, last-place SEC team like Kentucky, yet still get a spot in a BCS bowl?Seems like just yesterday that folks were complaining about Boise State in a BCS bowl even when the Broncos were unbeaten with wins over teams like Virginia Tech or Oregon State in the regular season.
Amazing, isn't it, Darren? If the Big East had a team ranked in the Top 15 then this would be a moot point!
Any thoughts on the Bearcats and Huskys this weekend? It could be for a share of the title for the Bearcats. Even though it would only be a share. But 5 of em in 6 years would be quite a statement.
Yes I picked Cincinnati to win, but I am not 100 percent on that prediction. UConn has played very well in its last two games. If the defense gets the type of effort we saw last week vs. Louisville, UConn will be in position to win the game. Cincinnati has to make sure Kay stays upright in this game. He had a shaky performance against Rutgers, right there with UConn as the best defensive teams in the Big East. And if there is no BE title for Cincinnati, UConn will have more to play for. So I think it's going to be a good game.
Andrea, why did you rank Boise at #23 behind Utah State, Northern Illinois and Kent State? I realize that Boise has not really beaten anyone of note this year (Fresno State is best win) but honestly, neither have those other teams when you actually look at it.
Wait, Kent State hasn't beaten Rutgers??
BG: UCF couldn't beat 5-7 Mizzou at home, a team Cuse took care of on the road. UCF will have to improve a lot to be 6-6 next year.
UCF will be serving a postseason ban, too, most likely.
Still looking forward to the game this weekend. They are calling for cold and a rain snow mix. Do you think this effects who wins the game. (outside of the fact if one team fumbles 6 times) Does bad weather help one club or the other?
In this case, I am not sure how big of an impact it has. Both teams are rushing teams first, and rely on strong defensive play!
It just stinks that if Brock would have done more early with NOVA (Minus the Arkansas game in which they played with the attitude that they had nothing to lose and everything to gain from that game) this recent play could have been avoided. In retrospect, as bad as the Kent State loss looked at the time, i thought Brock was more responsible as the the plays he called for NOVA did not go towards his strengths. Don't they have to at this point just exploit their WR's matchups? if we go down by more than a TD and we are running on 3rd and 7.. i might lose it Andrea! BTW i think you should be the B1G Blogger in 2014.
Well, you have an old friend in Brian Bennett over in the B1G so you will be fine. As for taking advantage of the WR matchups, I feel like I have been talking about that in every single game of the week I have done re: Rutgers. Why does Rutgers not take advantage of this matchup more?! Because all they want to do is run the ball and be conservative. I would like to see them air it out. We know Louisville can be beaten (ahem Alec Lemon).
Just so I am clear---is it a foregone conclusion that the winner of tonight's game has a date with Florida in the Sugar Bowl? What do you think the point spread for that game will be --- 14 points at least, I would think.
No. If Kent State loses, the BE winner will most likely be headed to the Orange Bowl. I don't see Northern Illinois or Boise State being able to move into the Top 16.
Hate to bring this can of worms up. But is UC making a mistake continuing with KAy at quarterback. Munchie made more mistakes, but the offense was tons more dynamic. I think we score more than 3 vs. Rutgers with Munchie!
Henry, you are the first person I have heard endorse Munchie for QB! I will say this -- I thought Butch would use Munchie much more in Wildcat/running situations. Look at the success Michigan had with Denard Robinson running. I think that adds a little something extra. Kay has done a better job of protecting the football and that is what Butch wants to see right now.
I know there isn't a non-AQ blog anymore, but since you used to cover the non-AQs, can I ask a favor please, Andrea? Can we say a final goodbye to the WAC publicly? It's a little sad the league will no longer play football. And how amazing was it to see Kaepernick (Nevada) shining on MNF, with ESPN analysts Dilfer (Fresno State) and Young (BYU) commenting on it? Farewell, WAC. You were once a shining star.
Yes, let us all have a moment of silence for the dearly, nearly departed WAC.
To Bob (NB):UCF outplayed Mizzou, led most of the game and essentially lost on a couple of big plays by Mizzou. I think every team, especially in this league, has a game they lost this year that they just shouldn't have. Comparing one common opponent never is too scientific of an approach.
To me it does not seem like Flood trusts his quarterback Nova. There were a couple of third and long situations last week where rutgers basically gave the ball back to pitt by running the ball. What are your thoughts.
I tend to agree with your assessment. I have not been a huge fan of the play calling this year, Josh.
AA...are there any conference games in the NEW BE next year that you would be interested to see? Like UCF/USF....or SMU-Houston
Aren't those Conference USA games? I will say Boise-Cincinnati!
Mom's waiting for your prediction?
if you could pick what bowl would you send BIG EAST Champ and who would you have them play?
Orange Bowl, better than playing Florida in the Sugar.
Can't wait for the ACC Blog for 2014. Heather has the class and looks a Louisville fan is looking for.
What, no Andrea Lover out there?! :(
OK I am taking my ball and going home. Thanks for the great questions, it was a frenzied chat! Enjoy tonight and see you again here next week!
