Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (10:32 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly chat. I am in NYC covering Cotto's fight against Trout on Saturday night at MSG. The weigh in is at 1 pm, so I needed to move the start time of the chat so sorry for the west coasters for being so early. Anyway, big fight this weekend and we have lots of coverage so check it out, read the sked and the blogs and stories and let's get to it.

Tremaine (Alexandria)

Hey Dan. Is this Guerrero Mayweather talk for real? If not, who will Floyd fight next? I don't think he is fighting Manny til next November if at all. Perhaps Canelo or Bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (10:34 AM)

The talk is very real. I believe it will be Mayweather's next fight. Richard Schaefer told me last night he is working on making the fight.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Whos reffing the Cotto-Trout fight? Feel like that could make a significant difference given their clash of styles

Dan Rafael
  (10:35 AM)

Referee is the little-known Charlie Fitch. Judges are Adalaide Byrd, John Poturaj & Steve Weisfeld.

Ryon (Liverpool )

predictions for the price and fury fights

Dan Rafael
  (10:38 AM)

I think Price smashes Skelton. Mismatch to me. Fury might have a problem here or there with Johnson, but he'll win also. Johnson has never done a thing, just talked big and then failed to deliver anything.

Andy (Seattle, WA)

Is it true that Freddie Roach wanted to do random drug test for the fight because they have suspicion of Marquez physical size?

Dan Rafael
  (10:38 AM)

Correct.

Mauricio (Rubschlager)

Dansanity,When Cotto wins this Saturday, what are the chances of seeing Canelo/Cotto next June in Madison Square Garden? I would love to see that fight, especially since it's on the month of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Dan Rafael
  (10:39 AM)

If Cotto wins, I think we could see that fight but probably not in New York. But doing that on PR weekend here would tremendous. Also, Canelo is supposed to be fighting in May so that is another issue.

Marco (Hollywood)

I dont hink the ghost has a big enough following and i think he wont be able to touch Mayweather. That fight doesn't intrest me one bit. Bring on Canelo.

Dan Rafael
  (10:42 AM)

Did Victor Ortiz have a big following when he faced Floyd? No and it did a big PPV number. Guerrero has a great story, will be great on 24/7 and the fight would sell. And I happen to think he might give Floyd a few problems, certainly more than guys like Ortiz, Mosoley and Marquez did.

Frank (PHX)

Whats your picks for Cotto/Trout?

Dan Rafael
  (10:42 AM)

I think Trout is a fine boxer and will give it everything he has, but I'm not picking against Cotto at MSG. He wins.

C.M. (Toronto)

Andre Berto really doesn't have a ring identity, does he? Beyond his fast hands and unquestionable heart, the guy gets absolutely lost in there when seriously challenged.

Dan Rafael
  (10:44 AM)

The thing with Berto in my view is that he has gotten by all these years on his raw talent and never really learned the finer points of boxing. His corner has consistently been a mess in fights and that needs to change if he is to get better. But he looks like the same fighter today that he looked 6-7 years ago. Tremendous heart, speed and toughness, but skills that were never developed the right way.

Los (IT office)

Is is me or does Trout come of a bit too nice? Not sure thats gonna help him @ the garden....

Dan Rafael
  (10:45 AM)

Trout is a truly nice guy, very respectful, down to earth and just a good dude. But dont take that for weakness. He can fight.

fightfan (NY)

How are tickets going for Cotto fight. I see they are selling below ticket value

Dan Rafael
  (10:46 AM)

There do seem to be a lot of tickets available pretty cheap. Miguel's promotional company is in charge of that and I think they held some back and then decided to release more and they have not been absorbed yet. That said there should still be a very good crowd.

Dan Rafael

Frank (PHX)

DTM, WOW what a helluva fight last weekend! We all knew Guerrero was a very good boxer and now he's shown the last 2 fights he can brawl fight rough at the higher weight and seems to have a very good chin. More Guerrero please!

Dan Rafael
  (10:46 AM)

Agreed. Guerrero-Berto was a tremendous fight. It's not fight of the year like some are suggesting, but it sure makes the list.

JT26 (NY)

Hi Dan,Pulev-Adamek???

Dan Rafael
  (10:47 AM)

Interesting fight but Adamek has Cunningham to deal with. Down the road? Who knows.

Cory (Albany, NY)

Hey Dan, I know I'll probably be vilified for this, but I'll take 12 rounds of Guerrero/Berto over 7 rounds of Rios/Alvarado for FOTY

Dan Rafael
  (10:49 AM)

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. That is fine. I just dont agree. Guerrero-Berto was an excellent fight but for my taste as far as picking FOY it was a little too one-sided and lacked qa certain drama in terms of what the outcome seemed to be. There was also too much holding and fouling. Rios-Alvarado was straight balls to the wall destrcution for the entire fight until the stoppage. That kind of sustained violence is FOY in my book.

junior (houston)

i have tickets to the donaire arce fight just wanted to know if you will be in attendance, if you come i hope i get to meet you

Dan Rafael
  (10:49 AM)

I am planning to be there.

Omar (Grandx Prairie, Tx)

Dan, is this an earlier weigh-in than normal? And will there be a live stream for the weigh-in? If so, what website. I know in the past they have done it on Yahoo. But no listing for it.

Dan Rafael
  (10:51 AM)

NY weigh ins always are earlier in the day so this is normal. I dont like it though. They are weighing about 34 hours before the fight. What's the point? And, yes, it will be streamed live on Showtime's website.

Abdullah (AL)

Any scorecards on Camacho's Girlfriends Fight?

Dan Rafael
  (10:52 AM)

That was as nutty a story as I have seen. I was talking with some people here in NY last night and we decided that Camacho would probably be pleased to know there was a fight at his wake.

Frank (PHX)

So it seems like we might get Pacquaio/Rios in April, Mayweather/Guerrero on Cinco de Mayo weekend, and Cotto/Canelo in June on PR weekend. Some pretty good fights.

Dan Rafael
  (10:52 AM)

Those are the fights that seem likely but your dates are out of whack.

Bob (Lynchburg, VA)

How big of a deal would Khan-Brook be if held in the UK in 2013?

Dan Rafael
  (10:53 AM)

Big, assuming they have both won their upcoming fights, which would mean Khan would be moving up to challenge Brook for a welter title since he faces Alexander in January.

Nareg (Boston)

D$ - I won't lie...I'm not very impressed with Guererro and I thought his performance was over-rated. He fought dirty with biased refereeing...am I crazy?

Dan Rafael
  (10:53 AM)

Yes.

Jesus (Florida)

SHould people in Puerto Rico be upset about the Cotto/Trout fight being charged as a PPV event, while here in the states is a regular showtim event?

Dan Rafael
  (10:54 AM)

Why should they be upset? This is business. Simple as that. There is a market and the fight probably will sell in PR.

Dan Rafael
  (10:54 AM)

Why should they be upset? This is business. Simple as that. There is a market and the fight probably will sell in PR.

Kevin (DMV)

Do you think Timothy Bradley will get another shot at a really big fight? Or is his fighting style too boring (low ppv) and his skill set too risky for one of the big names to fight him?

Dan Rafael
  (10:55 AM)

He'll get another opportunity. The question is will he take it price himself out and go to graduate school at the Winky Wright School of Boxing Business.

Chris (Roswell NM)

Hey Dan any chance we hear something from Money Mayweater next week about a possible opponent. Since Pacman is fighting and he likes to steal some attention.

Dan Rafael
  (10:55 AM)

Maybe. No secret they are trying to make the Guerrero bout so good chance.

Jeremy (Beaufort, Ireland)

Dan, I know it's maybe a bit early to speculate, but when might Mayweather-Guerrero be held if not on Cinco de Mayo?

Dan Rafael
  (10:56 AM)

I think it could happen as early as March.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Whats next for El Perro? Another relatively easy fight, or will GBP put him back in with a legit contender or beltholder?

Dan Rafael
  (10:56 AM)

He's fighting Jorge Silva on Showtime on Dec. 15 under Khan.

Wiston (Sacramento )

What are your thoughts of the Martin Murray vs. Sergio Martinez fight in Argentina? Murray is a good solid top 10 contender.

Dan Rafael
  (10:57 AM)

It's a legit fight.

AW (NY)

Ill be at MSG tomorrow night, any insight on the undercard? Will any of them be good fights?

Dan Rafael
  (10:57 AM)

The undercard is horrible. There is not one compelling fight on the whole damn thing. The televised undercard is an abomination.

Brock (Illinois)

Speaking of Devon Alexander and Kell Brook. Golden Boy has mentioned it is a showcase night for welters. I thought that would be a perfect chance to build up to a potential Paulie-Devon fight. Now I see Paulie probably won't fight until April. Does he have some undisclosed injury or just taking it easy?

Dan Rafael
  (10:58 AM)

I dont know of any Paulie injury but he probably wouldnt go on that undercard. His next fight would probably be back in Brooklyn.

Brett (Minneapolis)

Danta Claus, I follow your blogs, scorecards, tweets, etc. You mention KO, Round, and Fight of the year candidates quite frequently. Let's just use KO for now. How many make the final cut and how do you determine a winner?

Dan Rafael
  (10:59 AM)

No set number. I go through the year's worth of stuff, I go back to the videos and I pick the ones I like best. Not really too scientific.

Slater (West by God virginia)

I was glad to hear the Pavlik Ward fight was finally signed. I know everyone is dumping on the fight but I'm excited for it. I think everyone is seriously shortchanging Pavlik, not that Im picking him to win but he'll make it entertaining

Dan Rafael
  (11:00 AM)

What you said.

James (San Francisco )

Hey Dan, when will javier fortuna get a big fight? I think he's the best prospect at 126 not russel jr.

Dan Rafael
  (11:00 AM)

Fortuna is a tremendous talent. He is fighting for an interim belt next week on the Pacquiao-Marquez PPV undercard.

Dan Rafael
  (11:01 AM)

Fortuna is a tremendous talent. He is fighting for an interim belt next week on the Pacquiao-Marquez PPV undercard.

C.M. (Toronto)

Roy Jones calls Broner one of the "top five pound-for-pound" on HBO last week. Is it in Roy's contract to make at least one absolutely ludicrous statement on every broadcast? Right up there with comparing Dulorme to Hagler. Jeez.

Dan Rafael
  (11:01 AM)

Yeah, that was REALLY bad.

mike (fresno ca) [via mobile]

Which do you think would do bigger numbers mayweather/Guerrero or Cotto/Canelo?

Dan Rafael
  (11:02 AM)

Definitely Mayweather does more. DEFINITELY. Mayweather could fight anybody and do a million buys. Cotto-Canelo is a great fight but probably does more in the 750 range on its best night.

Jorge (Anaheim, Ca)

Dan, where does Cotto rank as far as fighters referring to themselves in the third person?

Dan Rafael
  (11:03 AM)

Dan Rafael is not sure about that. There are a few who do that a lot like Roy Jones, but Dan Rafael is not sure.

Jorge (Anaheim, Ca)

Why do the handlers of Savador Sanchez's nephew try to make him something he is not? I find him really annoying.

Dan Rafael
  (11:03 AM)

Agreed. He's a club fighter at best. All you have to know is that Top Rank had him and released him because they thought so little of him.

Spencer CG (Vancouver)

Nice platinum teeth on Adrien Broner. NOT.

Dan Rafael
  (11:04 AM)

LOL!

Mike (Los Angeles)

Banks can't fight Wlad for obvious reasons... or can he? Since they're both professionals and Banks says he knows how to fight Wlad.

Dan Rafael
  (11:04 AM)

Klitschko-Banks will NEVER happen.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, what are the chances that GBP puts Keith Thurman in against either Marcos Maidana or Alfredo Angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (11:04 AM)

Seems unlikely in the immediate future but down the road? Sure why not?

Sal (NY)

Dandelion, is Seth Mitchell no longer a serious prospect?

Dan Rafael
  (11:06 AM)

I like Seth a lot. Good dude, hard worker, great athlete. Can he still do something? Yes, I think he can. But the way he lost to Banks really has to make you question his long term future. So I would say he is no longer a prospect. He is a heavyweight who will keep trying to reach the top.

mike (fresno ca) [via mobile]

Dan Rafael Mike finds your comment about third person epic lol

Dan Rafael
  (11:07 AM)

Dan Rafael agrees. Dan Rafael was laughing when he was typing that.

Pete (Brooklyn)

Hey Dan...How do you think Ricky Hatton looked last week. In my opinion for a guy who hadnt fought in 3 years fighting a world class fighter he looked pretty good.

Dan Rafael
  (11:07 AM)

I agree. I do not think it was the kind of performance that should have people saying he must retire. He can if he wants, but if he wanted to fight on, I'd endorse that.

Ronnie (OH)

In regards to Fight of the Year, as good as Berto/Guerrero was, I don't really even think there's a legit argument for it being runner-up to FOTY. I think a lot of people are forgetting what an absolute war Salido/Lopez II was.

Dan Rafael
  (11:08 AM)

Salido-Lopez definitely a top contender.

Cory (Albany, NY)

I've seen either Gabriel Rosado or Fernando Guerrero as GGG's next opponent. Bit of a let down no?

Dan Rafael
  (11:08 AM)

Rosado has the fight. It's fine considering what was available and it is also not the main event.

Dan Rafael
  (11:09 AM)

Here's one of my blogs today on Cotto-Trout: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/2515/trouts-style-shouldnt-be-issue-for-cotto

Dan Rafael
  (11:10 AM)

Did you see my Thursday feature on Cotto? http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8689582/miguel-cotto-new-york-love-affair-continues-saturday-austin-trout-fight Have one coming on Trout today.

Aaron (Hartford)

Any idea what Pavlik is getting now that the Ward fight is finalized ?

Dan Rafael
  (11:11 AM)

I dont know the exact money yet but I believe it is probably about $1.2 millionish.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Admit it... you chuckled a bit opening bell when Berto came out with the high shoulder Floyd stance.

Dan Rafael
  (11:11 AM)

I didnt chuckle. I said, "WTF is he doing????"

Everlast 76 (Montréal Zoo)

whos next for Froch ? im from Montreal so im really anctious to know if its goin to be Adonis stevenson or a rematch with Bute , but I tend to think the cobra will face the viking warrior !

Dan Rafael
  (11:14 AM)

The Froch team wants Kessler badly. They are talking to the Bute team about possibly deferring the rematch one more fight allowing them both to do something else at the moment. Froch would have to get an exception from the IBF, which I think he can get, to put off the Stevenson mandatory. Bute probably would then fight on HBO in March against another opponent. I have heard Edwin Rodriguez's name mentioned a possibility, which is a very solid fight. But if Froch faced Kessler in March he would again have a mandatory problem with Stevenson to deal with. My best guess at the moment is that in March, Bute fight somebody (maybe Rodriguez) and Froch tries to make the Kessler rematch and whatever happens next deal with it then.

Freddie Porno King (Dominican Republic)

dan, no testing done for broner-demarco. whats up with goldenboy?

Dan Rafael
  (11:15 AM)

That was not a Golden Boy thing. That was USADA, from what I understand, saying they did not have enough time when contacted about testing to set up their proper protocal.

Nizzi (Des Moines)

Dan, What happens to Garcia/Judah now that Devon Alexander is going to fight on 1/19?

Dan Rafael
  (11:15 AM)

Garcia-Judah will be Feb. 9. There is a press conference tomorrow.

Quincy Q (ATL)

Sir Dan King Fight Freek what were the purses for the Ghost and Berto

Dan Rafael
  (11:16 AM)

Berto was $1.65 million (or $1.625, I can't remember off the top of my head but I tweeted it) and Guerrero $1 million.

Love Child (parts unknown)

Dan. Why is it that Joel Julio is never on your p4p list? I feel that I should be on your list all the time.

Dan Rafael
  (11:16 AM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Terdsak (Bronx, NY)

Who gave you permission to start the chat early without consulting me first?

Dan Rafael
  (11:17 AM)

I consulted the wretched WBC. They allowed it, for a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Round of the Year Candidates:Viloria/Marquez Round 5JCC Jr/Martinez 12Berto/Guerrero ... you pick em'

Dan Rafael
  (11:17 AM)

Round to me is obvious and it one of the three you listed.

norberto (zamora)

Dan in your blog you quote cotto saying he had problems with the sparing partners, who are them?

Dan Rafael
  (11:18 AM)

He did not ID them.

darryl p indianapolis [via mobile]

do u think the ghost as a chance to upset mayweather?

Nizzi (Des Moines)

Will Jermain Taylor / Kid Chocolate get made and be on the Garcia/Judah undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (11:20 AM)

They are working on it but I hope it doesn't happen. That is an epic mismatch of the highest order and a fight in which Taylor could be injured.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Danimal, where do Viloria-Marquez and Gonzalez-Estrada rate on the FOY list? Both of those fights were better than Guerrero-Berto

Dan Rafael
  (11:20 AM)

They were both excellent, FOY types.

Frank (PHX)

How bout a rematch now between Ortiz/Berto sometime next yr. Big crossroads type fight, Loser goes home.

Dan Rafael
  (11:20 AM)

Would love to see it.

Brian Steven Ross (Riverside, CA)

Hey Dan did Showtime do away with the preliminary fights being aired on Showtime Extreme? They didn't have any for the Hatton fight and there's none for the Cotto fight tomorrow.

Dan Rafael
  (11:22 AM)

No, not at all. They didnt do Hatton undercard I believe because of the logistics and expense or having two crews there. Remember, it was a pretty late addition to the Showtime sked. With the Cotto fight, I just think they know it sucks so bad they didnt want to waste the time and money on showing it. From the outset, Stephen Espinoza said they would not necessarily do every undercard on Extreme.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Wait, so Showtime and HBO are going head to head AGAIN on January 19th?? what gives? what was wrong with January 12th for Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (11:23 AM)

Yes, they are going head to head. Get used to it. What was wrong with Jan. 12 for HBO? It is what it is.

The Met (T.O.)

How much do you want to bet that Berto decided to shoulder roll exactly one week before the fight when he saw Broner was doing it? Seems about on par with Berto's ring intelligence.

Dan Rafael
  (11:23 AM)

I thought maybe on the ring walk.

Jorge (Miami)

Danweather, youre the cash Cow of journalist, how do you rate Malignaggi's reporting skills?

Todd (Florence, Sc)

Dan - Will Rosado maintain his status as Bundrage's mandatory even though he is taking the fight with GGG? If so, not bad. He gets a nice payday and a shot at a 160 title while still getting another opportunity/payday later on even if he loses.

Dan Rafael
  (11:25 AM)

No, he wouldnt.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - any chance you would travel to Argentina for Martinez v Murray? Should be an electric atmosphere....

Dan Rafael
  (11:26 AM)

That would be pretty cool. Had not thought about that actually. But I would not be going. I actually have something already scheduled that weekend in late April.

Billy Parham (NYC)

I feel that Maidana-Soto Karass fight keeps getting overlooked. That was awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (11:29 AM)

Not overlooked. Excellent fight but not THE fight of the year. But one of those honorable mention types.

Dan Rafael
  (11:29 AM)

By the way, I didnt win the $550M Powerball but if I had I would probably still have chatted today.

Matt (Charlotte)

If the round of the years isnt Martinez- JCC then I am not watching boxing anymore. I had about 12 non boxing people over my house to watch the fight as I convinced them all that it would be a great fight with alot of drama. The world title on the line, clear shut out victory for martinez then round 12. My house was a mess... people were jumping on the couch, screaming and yelling, kids woke up, neighbors didnt know what was going in.. madness.... it had everything you could want in a round of championship boxing and got 12 new boxing fans in the process.... just my opinion

Dan Rafael
  (11:31 AM)

You are 1000000000000000000000000000000000% correct. Honestly, it is one of the easiest picks I have had to make in the 13 years I've been doing year-end awards. SLAM DUNK OBVIOUS. Picking Corrales-Castillo I as fight of the year was maybe easier.

Steve (Hartford)

IF Bute fights in March on HBO would be the same card as Dawson/Pascal 2?

Dan Rafael
  (11:31 AM)

That is being discussed. Same telecast possibly but from different venues.

Freddie Porno King (Dominican Republic)

for those in new york, u can watch pacs live workout today at times square big screen at 530PM eastern time

Dan Rafael
  (11:32 AM)

Correct.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, if you'd won the $580 million PowerBall, would we then have seen Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, and your pick for the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (11:33 AM)

No, because I would waste my money on them.

Mauricio (Chicago, IL)

That's funny, I was thinking earlier in the chat, what if Dansanity wont the Powerball? Would he quit retire right away or keep writing for ESPN for a while then quit?

Dan Rafael
  (11:33 AM)

I dont know what I would do exactly, but I would certainly still do something boxing related.

Mike (DC)

The thought of Cleverly-Hopkins could put the whole chat to sleep....

Dan Rafael
  (11:33 AM)

Sorry, missed what you said. I dozed off.

Berto's Corner (Ringside)

Be an assassin!

Willy (BK)

Bounce TV's foray into boxing is random as hell but awesome. Saw the promo for the Guzman fight during an episode of Fat Albert the other day and was pretty impressed with the production value - kind of ironic that they were hyping up 2 Hispanic fighters though considering they mainly show old Soul Train eps and Kid&Play movies.

Dan Rafael
  (11:34 AM)

I know, hilarious. I actually thought the same thing. But I found out I get Bounce TV (like ch. 807 on my cable system) and I set the DVR before I came to NYC.

Carlos (WI)

Dan, How many Trinidad fights did you cover? Tito brought the best atmosphere to his fights, like nothing else. How high did Tito Trinidad ever make it on the P4P list?

Dan Rafael
  (11:37 AM)

I covered 7 Tito fights at ringside: Thiam, Vargas, Joppy, Hopkins, Mayorga, Wright and Jones. The atmosphere for the Joppy fight and Mayorga fight are in my personal top 10 of atmosphere's. Absolutely electric. I can still hear the cowbells that were ringing during the Joppy fight. That was an absolutely awesome night at the Garden.

Brinicio (New York)

Can Rigondeaux get a fight with Donaire?

Dan Rafael
  (11:38 AM)

Eventually I hope.

The Met (T.O.)

That Andre Berto is a really graceful loser, isn't he? Never sour grapes or anything with that fine young chap.

Dan Rafael
  (11:38 AM)

Nooooooooooooooooooo, never.

Bob (Chicago)

Dan, do you think Ricky Hatton made a mistake coming back, or do you think this was the right thing for him win or lose?

Dan Rafael
  (11:39 AM)

I'm glad he came back. He got himself straight and was in shape. So good for him for giving the effort.

Spencer CG (Vancouver)

The thrilling Brian Viloria can't get on HBO to save his life, but we get treated to Dawson's return, a guy who has never made an exciting fight. Big shock.

Matt (NJ)

Dan,I have a question regarding gloves. I've seen a lot of guys like Mayweather and Pacquiao use Winning gloves during training but not during fights. Are Winning gloves not approved for fights, or are they used because they protect the fighters' hands better during training than the gloves they use during their fights?

Dan Rafael
  (11:41 AM)

They are fine for fights. Many fighters do use them. They are a bit softer and more protecting of the hands, which might be why they are used by some guys in sparring.

Mike (DC)

What are your thoughts on Rocky Martinez-Burgos?

Dan Rafael
  (11:42 AM)

Excellent fight. Will open the Jan 19 HBO card at MSG Theater. I plan to be there.

Brett (Chicago)

Ward-Pavlik doesn't interest me much, but I have to say, I can't figure out who else Ward is going to fight.

Dan Rafael
  (11:42 AM)

Exactly. Too bad some other people dont get that.

Peter (Philadelphia)

Was there any thought of stopping the Berto/Guerrero fight? Berto looked like Frazier in Manilla, couldn't see the punches coming.

Dan Rafael
  (11:42 AM)

I dont know but his eyes were very bad.

Patrick (Detroit, MI)

I thought Max Kellerman was way off in his defense of Berto's rabbit punching. My brother and I were both complaining that the ref hadn't warned Berto for rabbit punching rounds before he did.

Dan Rafael
  (11:43 AM)

I agree with you.

Todd (Florence, SC)

Speaking of Bundrage, any word on what's next for him since he's clear of the Rosado mandatory? I figured he'd be set up for increased activity/business now that he's with GBP.

Dan Rafael
  (11:44 AM)

Bundrage will be back in early 2013. That was always the plan and nothing has changed.

Frank (PHX)

Dan thanks for tweet the other day informing us fight freaks that HBO will replay all 3 Pac/JMM fights. All 3 classic fights, I'll have my DVR set.

Dan Rafael
  (11:45 AM)

All the details are also in my blog here on the times: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael

Spencer CG (Vancouver)

How do you rate Ken Hershman's first year at HBO? Listen, I obviously know one guy can't change everything, especially not in a year. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't very disappointed with the quality of fights he has allowed to air on the Haymon Boxing Operation. It's like Greenberg never left.

Dan Rafael
  (11:55 AM)

There is not a simple answer. On the one hand, he came in with a lot of stuff to clean up and get out of the way, like certain committments he had to deal with because of bad deals Greenburg made. That took up time and budget. He also has other stuff to deal with besides boxing in his department and there is definitely a learning curve. On the boxing front, he was dealt a bad hand on a fight like Gamboa-Rios, which was the cornerstone of the early part of the year's live shows. It didnt happen through zero fault of HBO. But there have been some questionable decisions made. I thought they should have been more aggressive in pursuing the Ortiz-Berto rematch, which they lost to Showtime over a small difference in money. But HBO also was off in their initial offer. Then the fight fell apart anyway because of the drug test. The fact that Golden Boy took a lot of its product to Showtime hurt for sure. It's not that HBO lost big FIGHTS but they lost big NAMES like Cotto, Canelo, Khan. So you have to weigh factors. Should HBO have blown its brains out spending crazy money on 2nd tier fights like Canelo-Lopez, Cotto-Trout and Khan-Molina? HBO was willing to buy all of them but not at the prices being asked for. So it depends on what you want to see -- star names in secondary fights or more even fights with names not as big. They did get Martinez-Chavez, Mayweather-Cotto as major PPVs plus the Manny fights. They had Ward-Dawson, a very intersesting fight to me that turned out to be entertaining even if onesided. So there were some good fights. To make a longer story short, I would say Ken did a solid job in the first year with plenty of room for improvement next year now that he is more comfortable in his position. He needs to make sure he gets the next Mayweather fight done and not lose him to Showtime, which is on the prowl. If he loses Mayweather, like Greenburg lost Pacquiao for a fight, that will be a disaster for him. So all in all, I think a fair grade is about a B- in year one. I know he's trying.

There is not a simple answer. On the one hand, he came in with a lot of stuff to clean up and get out of the way, like certain committment he had to deal with because of bad deals Greenburg made. That took up time and budget. He also has other stuff to deal with besides boxing in his department and there is definitely a leaning curve. Anthony (Cincinnati)

Ward deserves a break (Pavlik). I wish all fighters would take breaks this entertaining.

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

I hear what you are saying but I disagree in the sense that when you fight so infrequently the notion of "break" is BS. Ward fought once this year. He doesn't need a "break." That said, like we discussed earlier, there are not real legit opponents available right now anyway and Pavlik is an exciting guy with a name.

corey (westwick)

okay so now that he retired again is Ricky Hatton in mind a hall of famer I go either way

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I think that he probably does get in. He was THE champ at 140, won a belt at 147 and was in some of the biggest fights of his time. What will put him over is the MASSIVE popularity he had. That has to be part of the equation when voting. His events were larger than life. What will also help him is that he was great with the media -- the folks who vote. I cannot speak more highly of Hatton as far as being a great guy to deal with from my point of view as a writer. If all fighters were as good with reporters as Hatton is, it would be incredible.

Lucas (Danbury, CT)

I don't know why people are counting Pavlik out. If his head is on straight he is a tough out for ANYONE.

Larry (Madison, WI)

Dangum Style, do you think we will see Broner vs Gamboa in 2013?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Probably not.

Kristian (Wall Street, NY)

Who do you consider the greatest boxer of all-time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

SRR.

Randy (NYC)

I'll take Ward/Pavlik, but Froch/Pavlik would have been a hell of a fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Agreed.

Ross (Indianapolis)

For all the "boxing is dying" talk from the last few years, it seems like a lot of networks are wanting to get in on the action. Epix, Wealth, Bounce, a return to regular TV on NBC. Pretty impressive, and the more outlets for boxing, the better

Mike (DC)

Does HBO have a date for Broner's next fight? GBP should ride the momentum of the DeMarco fight and bring him back ASAP!

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

They would like to have him back on in February.

Steve (Hartford)

Is Broner going to wait for the results of the Burns fight before targeting his next opponent ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I dont think so. I think Broner could come back in February and then fight Burns in the summer.

Kristian (Wall Street, NY)

If Pavlik beats Ward, would you consider it a minor upset or a major upset? Also, if Ward does beat Pavlik, who COULD be next in line for him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

MAJOR upset. Ward is the best fighter in the world right now besides Mayweather. Pavlik is clearly beyond his best days even if still dangerous. It would be a major upset.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

MAJOR upset. Ward is the best fighter in the world right now besides Mayweather. Pavlik is clearly beyond his best days even if still dangerous. It would be a major upset.

Mike (DC)

Does Stiverne have any shot against Arreola? Actually really looking forward to that fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Absolutely. Stiverne is a tremendous puncher. If Eric Molina can badly shake Arreola what do you thkn Stiverne could do?

Mario (Houston, TX)

What do you think of Pac-Marq 24/7 so far?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

First ep was outstanding. Loved the reviews of the first three fight. It was about close to a Legedary Nights as we have right now. Second episode put me to sleep. I feel for the producers. They have so little to work with.

Mike (DC)

135 is pretty barren, who would you like to see Broner face in Feb if not Burns?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

135 is a bit weak. Maybe if Burns comes out easily on Dec. 15 it could happen. If not, I could see Golden Boy maybe trying to make Abril since Abril-Bogere was ppd because of the injury. There are not a lot of great choices. That said, whoever it is, I wanna see Broner.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

If Ricky Hatton does make it into the IBHOF, they'd better stock plenty of beer, especially Guiness, in Canastota!

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Will Al Haymon fighters fight each other. Eventually there will be mandatories and public demand; say for instance Garcia/Broner.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

It could happen for the first time if we see the mismatch of all mismatches in Quillin vs Jermain Taylor.

Aaron (MA)

Who wins on next thursday between beltran/ji hoon kim?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

The fans. That will be a war.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Hey, Dan. I really like Trout from watching him on Showtime. Like his candor and sense of humor. Hope he performs well tomorrow.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

He's an easy guy to root for.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

He's an easy guy to root for.

Carl (Richmond)

What's it gonna take for Povetkin to accept a fight with Wlad?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Probably a double arm amputation.

Bing (Philly)

have you ever fantasized having a poker game with norman chad, the iron sheik and the members of kiss?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Pretty much every day.

Joe (San Diego )

Do you think it would be difficult obtaining a urine sample from Marquez considering he would probably just piss in the cup and drink it right away?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Tom (GA)

Why would Mayweather try to make a Guerrero fight instead of a Pacquiao fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Really? REALLY?

Torron (Philly)

I know round 12 of Chavez Martinez is front runner for ROTY but please tell me round 8 of Lopez Salido isn't clearly the better candidate. Am I crazy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Yes, you are crazy.

Slater (West by God Virginia )

DTM, talk about a legit answer to a chat question! A simple b- would have sufficed, way to go the extra mile

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

LOL, thanks.

Mauricio (Chi City)

LOL at Tom from Georgia's comment. No, boxing knowledge whatsover. LOL

Sun Devil (Los Angeles)

Dan, will Monday's Scorecard include the fights that broke out during Camacho's wake?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Mario (Houston, TX)

Does Cotto have a rematch clause?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley! As for the rematch clause -- yes, I am told Cotto does have one.

Spencer CG (Vancouver)

EPIC answer. Really appreciate it. Worthy of a blog. Shows how quick you are. Thanks, brother.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I assume you mean the Hershman question. Thanks.

Alex (Missouri )

Hey Dan, has Chino Maidana selected an opponent? If not what are some names beening tossed around?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Yes. Read my blog from yesterday on the exact topic: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael

Craig D. (Philly)

do you ever buy packs of boxing cards or do you just buy individual ones on ebay? Was looking for packs of boxing cards recently and didn't find any.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I've done both but there are not really boxing card packs now. I bought many in the past. There are boxing cards in some other series with mixed sports so I usually just pick up the individual boxing cards I want as singles, old and new.

Craig D. (Philly)

Es still Macho Time!

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

I thought it was the time when we dance?

Roy (Reno)

Dan, count me in as very interested in May-Guerrero. I love the idea of fresh fights. This will be the first Pac fight I have not purchased since David Diaz, we have already seen it 3 times do we really need #4?

Dieter (From Sprockets)

Dan, ask and thou shall receive! NOW is the time in the chat when we DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome book and not just saying it because I am in it.

Nick (DE)

For those without Bounce TV, Pursit TV will be showing Guzman-Allakvherdiev tonight and there channel is streamed live on pursuitchannel.com

Ricky Hatton Fans (All Over the World)

Thanks for the memories Ricky.

OK Freaks, thanks for chatting earlier than usual today. I gotta go to the weigh in for Cotto-Trout. Hope you check out all of our coverage and follow me on Twitter for updates from the weigh in @danrafaelespn. Enjoy the fights this weekend and talk you next week from Vegas, where I will be for Pacquiao-Marquez 4. Peace.
