Chat with Rich Cimini

Rich Cimini
  (2:03 PM)

Greetings, all. Thanks for stopping by. Plenty of questions already submitted, so ...

IRA (Staten Island)

Rich, I think the 3 critical errors they made putting this team together this year were expecting Hill to be their #2 right away, i am starting to beleive Sparano is in over his head especially with very little talent at the skilled position spots and of course the Tebow trade i think was the finishing touch. They have no clue how to use him. And we didn't even talk about the OL. Your thoughts?

Rich Cimini
  (2:06 PM)

No doubt, they miscalculated with Hill. Needed another veteran WR. Sparano hasn't shown much. He'd have been the right guy for this team in '09, when it was all smash mouth. I've made my feelings clear about Tebow. It was a bad trade and they made it worse.

Jack (Denton, TX)

Hi Rich,Do you think that Brandon Moore will get fined for that blow to Sanchez's head last Thursday?

Rich Cimini
  (2:06 PM)

Ha, funny. I think he's already paid enough for that one.

Peter (NY)

Rich, there are many perplexing things about that butt fumble play. The thing that is the most confusing is when Sanchez notices that it is a broken play and starts scrambling, why didn't he just keep running to the right of B Moore? Looking at the replay it looks like there was considerable running room to the right but for some inexcusable reason he breaks off to the left. Did I see that right based on the replay and if so what is wrong with that guy? Too many times watching Sanchez play I swear it looks like it is his first time playing football.

Rich Cimini
  (2:07 PM)

I agree. There seemed to be daylight to the right of Moore. It's a mystery. I'm not sure Sanchez even knows why he did that.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear RichCould you see Rex Ryan ever coaching in the NCAA?

Rich Cimini
  (2:08 PM)

No. He's an NFL lifer.

Michael (NY)

Rich, I never want my team to have a horrible season as bad as this one is so far but wouldn't it be better if the Jets lose out and secure a top 5 draft pick? I'm never in favor of losing on purpose but this team has a serious lack of talent. Maybe next years draft they could finally find a quality pass rusher.

Rich Cimini
  (2:08 PM)

Rex was asked that question yesterday. He answered the way you'd expect him to answer. I agree. Losing is never the answer.

Joe (NY)

Rich, you addressed the cap situation in a recent posting. You said if they cut LB Bart Scott, OLB Calvin Pace and OT Jason Smith, they will clear nearly $28 million. I think we can both agree Scott and Smith are gone. My question is what about Pace, do you think they will cut him? I'd say cutting Scott, Smith, and Thomas are no brainers. I'm in favor of cutting Pace because he offers nothing in the pass rush and can't make plays in space. But cutting Pace would be seriously risking the depth at linebacker.

Rich Cimini
  (2:10 PM)

I agree. I like Pace. He's a versatile LB and fits well into this scheme. We know he's not a great pass rusher. But he has a huge cap number. Maybe he'll renegotiate.

Billy (NY)

I was just watching the Falcons game last night and there was good old John Abraham continuing to make plays. This guy is still getting it done and playing at a high level. Not to mention he would have been the Jets all time leader in sacks. I can't believe we ever let this guy go. I remember at the time being tick off at getting rid of him. Did we trade because he wanted too much money or was it off the field stuff?

Rich Cimini
  (2:11 PM)

There was a lot of off-the-field stuff. Plus, the money. Plus, Mangini didn't want his defense focused around 1 guy.

Matt (NY)

Rich, I seriously couldn't believe I heard Rex say during the post game press conference that he thought Sanchez played good against New England and he brought out the stat about his passer rating. Is Rex really that clueless? I just don't understand why Rex never criticizes Sanchez. I mean after every week it is getting ridiculous. I get he is the starter because they don't have any better option on the roster. But even the best QBs in the league get criticized by their coach every once in a while.

Rich Cimini
  (2:12 PM)

Kid gloves, baby. Kid gloves.

Chris (NY)

Rich, do you think Keller would be a pro bowl TE if he played with a better QB? Also do you think the Jets will franchise him and bring him back next year?

Rich Cimini
  (2:13 PM)

I think Keller is being under-utilized. I'm not sure why. Frankly, I don't thin Sparano's system is TE friendly. At this point, I don't see him back next year. Again, who knows? Depends on who's making the decisions.

Gary (NY)

Rich, do you think Dave DeGuglielmo has a legitimate gripe about the criticism of the O-line? I don't think it was right for him to give a lecture to the media on how to do their job but I do think the O-line gets too much criticism. I think Sanchez should get some more of the blame because there are plenty of times he stares down his receivers and takes too much time in his progressions. I mean he really has poor pocket awareness.

Rich Cimini
  (2:15 PM)

Of course he has a legitimate gripe, but that's life in the NFL. Pass protection = offensive line. When I break down tape, I always try to differentiate between OL and RBs/TEs, so I resent him painting us with a broad brush. Every OL coach deals with the same thing, but you don't see them flying off the handle.

Luke (NJ)

I know Rex is really loyal to his players, but why not bench Bart Scott and play Davis more? I mean shouldn't he want to see what he has in Davis? Plus Scott isn't worth the trouble with his dealing with the media. I wouldn't cut Scott in case another team signed him, I would just bench him or drastically limit his reps. I also think it is a joke that Ryan said Scott should see more playing time. He has been declining every season.

Rich Cimini
  (2:17 PM)

As you said, Rex is fiercely loyal to his guys. Scott still is a semi-effective player in the box vs. the run, but he gets exposed in space. They should play the kid.

David (NY)

Rich, clearly Pouha is not right. If the Jets lose against Arizona and their dreams of being in playoff contention are over do you see them shutting him down for the season so he can attend to whatever is ailing his lower back and have surgery if need be and rehabilitate it.

Rich Cimini
  (2:20 PM)

Yes, I can see that. Sione won't talk about his injury situation because he's not looking for sympathy but I can tell you this: The man is playing in pain. Sometimes I see him grimace when he sits on his stool in front of his locker. He's a warrior.

Geoff (Livingston, NJ)

Hey Rich. If Tannenbaum gets fired and Woody Johnson hires YOU, how would you go about righting the ship? Which players do you cut/let go and which do you resign?

Rich Cimini
  (2:20 PM)

Woody wouldn't hire me. My asking price would be too high.

Matt (River Plaza, NJ)

Hey Rich,Honestly why do you think Greg is not getting activated? Is it because of his comments during the off-season? Just seems like a joke that Tebow with fractured ribs suited up last thursday and he didn't really hard to believe.

Rich Cimini
  (2:26 PM)

Breaking news here, per Ed Werder: Tebow will be inactive this week. McElroy will be the No. 2. Not surprised. I was told Tebow took only 1 snap on practice Wednesday. Still can't believe Rex had him active last Thursday.

lex (tampa,fl)

respect your work, rich. do you think if sanchez fails this sun., that tebow will be playing? thank you.

Rich Cimini
  (2:26 PM)

No. He'll be inactive this week. Can't imagine him being ready to start in Jax.

Peter (NYC)

Rich - were you the one who ratted out DeGuglielmo to the league!?!? haha

Rich Cimini
  (2:27 PM)

It doesn't matter who did that; the point is, he consistently failed to uphold his media obligation. He was breaking the rules.

Joe (Hoboken)

Are/were you Fake Steiny? If not, who is? We know you know.

Rich Cimini
  (2:29 PM)

I haven't addressed this matter, but I became aware of it a couple of days ago. I can assure you, I do not run a fake twitter account. I have enough trouble keeping up with my own tweeting, and I wouldn't waste my time with a fake. You'll have to keep searching for the real fake.

Jeremy (Waltham)

How bad has McElroy played in practice that he can't even get activated? All he has to do is outperform 2 qbs who can't throw and one of them has broken ribs.

Rich Cimini
  (2:30 PM)

He's active this week.

Derek Hamilton (The Great White North)

Hey Rich, what are your thoughts on Ira from Staten Island replacing Fireman Ed? Also on a side note after being a 25 year fan I decided to attend my first home Jets game. Just my luck the first game I attend is the Thanksgiving Massacre. Brutal, saw Dustin Keller at a Starbucks in Manhattan that weekend and felt like asking him for my $600 back.

Rich Cimini
  (2:31 PM)

I'm sorry you wasted $600. No, I don't think Ira would replace Ed. That's not his style. Ira is too classy for that. He's a true fan.

James (Syracuse, N.Y.)

Clearly the platoon situation with Ducasse is a matter of pride, so is it safe to assume he's a lock to be on the roster next season regardless?

Rich Cimini
  (2:32 PM)

If Tanny is the GM, he's a lock.

Pandalero (Long Island/Phoenix)

Was Guges in the wrong about his bye week availability. Sticky situation with Sandy and all that. What about the other coaches, did they make themselves "more available" than Guges?

Rich Cimini
  (2:35 PM)

It was a silly comment, saying he was available during the bye week. The team facility was shut down from Tuesday to Friday. The storm paralyzed the area. He should've thought about that before he opened his mouth.

Joe Gioia (NYC)

Rich - after losing 34-0 to the 49ers in Week 4, Rex re: if Sanchez's contract limits a possible QB change said, "contract has nothing to do with it." Now after Guge's comments that the decision to platoon Ducasse/Slauson "is a directive from high above," do you think his unfortunate remarks shed some light as to Sparano's hesitance of giving Tebow a chance to lead this team for even a series despite Sanchez's continued struggles?

Rich Cimini
  (2:39 PM)

It's a fair question, but there's so much more to the QB situation than Ducasse. With Ducasse, there's the pressure to justify his draft round.

Chris (Danbury, CT)

I refer to Mike Tannenbaum as the "accidental GM" since he's really a glorified accountant/lawyer who seems to have charmed his way to the top. Realistically, will Woody Johnson retain him, and (hopefully) if not, who would be on the Jets short list as new GM?

Rich Cimini
  (2:41 PM)

Woody really likes Mike and wants to make it work. I think it's up in the air.

Bob (London)

What's the wideout situation looking like for Sunday? Will we really have a heavy dose of Jordan White and Mardy Gilyard?

Rich Cimini
  (2:42 PM)

It'll be Hill, Schilens, Kerley and White.

Jimmy (Huntington)

Rich, Just when I thought the Jets hit rock we have this arrogant OL coach (Dave DeGuglielmo) tell us that Vlad is being forced to play from upstairs. I guess that means Slauson is a goner next year(which is a mistake). Isn't this the same OL coach who was quoted as saying "Someone would need a gun to have him not play Hunter!" What an arrogant jerk....perfect match to this Head Coach.....What would it take to bring in Bill Polian as GM and let him hire the coach he wants and let him rebuild this mess?!

Rich Cimini
  (2:43 PM)

You're right, this coach staked his reputation to Hunter. What does that tell you?

Matt (Madison)

Hi Rich - As always, great job with the blog and chats! The franchise seems to be in a free fall not seen since the Kotite era. What are the chances Woody cleans house and goes for the big name (Tony Dungy, Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden) to come in and try to right the ship?

Rich Cimini
  (2:44 PM)

Tough to predict with Woody. He'll do whatever the last person in his ear tells him to do.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Rich - what has happened to the Jets special teams this year? It was a unit you could count on more often than not but they have become more and more of a liability as the season has gone on

Rich Cimini
  (2:45 PM)

You're right, it has been a stunning fall from grace. Can't explain it. A lot of flukey plays.

B. Palsie (NJ)

All things Bart Scott did this year: threatened a report. Staged a strange boycott of the media. Got mad at one of the classier Jets out there (Bryan Thomas) for talking to the media. Now he's getting on the fans this week. All that and he's ATROCIOUS. So why on earth hasn't he been cut yet?

Rich Cimini
  (2:45 PM)

Good question.

JQ (Hillsborough)

I remember you saying last year that covering an 8-8 team was excruciating cause you go through the same ups-and-downs as the team. What about a 4-7 crash-and-burn season? Better to cover?

Rich Cimini
  (2:46 PM)

I'll say this: The Jets are never dull.

Tony Martone (Kearny, NJ)

Hey Rich, so your name was tossed around on Twitter this week about being the guy behind the parody Steiny twitter feed. Was it you or not?

Rich Cimini
  (2:46 PM)

Absolutely NOT.

Sal (San Diego)

Hi Rich...Do you have an idea of how the organization feels about McElroy? Its obvious Tebow is not going to play but do they feel McElroy could start and play well if Sanchez went down?...P.S. Thank you for the extremely well written article you put together on Bart Scott's childish behavior!

Rich Cimini
  (2:47 PM)

Thanks, Sal. I think the front office thinks McElroy can become a legit No. 2. He has worked hard to improve his lower-body strength, which has helped his throwing mechanics/arm strength.

Porky (North Arlington)

Rich, How devastating are the OL coach's comments? It definitely seems to work it's way to Tannenbaum, but does that crack open up any wider?

Rich Cimini
  (2:49 PM)

In his press conf, Rex just admitted that Slauson is better than Ducasse. So why platoon? Makes no sense.

Oz (CT)

Hi Rich, Every year, Rex claims his roster is better than the previous year. And even if they finish 9-7 at this point, I'd hate to think they actually would overlook the poor depth of talent on this roster. In your opinion, is Rex on the same page with Mike T's draft picks and personel decisions or is he just doing a "sell" job and would he fire Mike T if he actually could ?

Rich Cimini
  (2:50 PM)

Rex has input in personnel decisions. Mike is smart enough to know he has a limited football background, so he relies on Rex.

Angelo (Philadelphia )

Great job as always Rich. I agree that the Jets problems are bigger than just Sanchez, but the easiest way to improve a team is at the QB position. Just look at the Colts/Dolphins/Redskins. All those teams have a fighting chance now that they have better QB play. But I fear with the guaranteed money owed to them, we're looking at another season of Sanchez/Tebow/McElroy in 2013. Is there any scenario you can think of that changes this?

Rich Cimini
  (2:52 PM)

Thanks, Angelo. Tebow won't be back, Sanchez will. Yes, you're right, a franchise QB can change everything. I'm not ready to anoint Tannehill just yet, but clearly Luck and RG3 have made huge impacts. The Jets probably will acquire a starting-caliber QB (Alex SMith?) to compete with Sanchez.

Zach (Hoboken)

There is no chance Tebow is on the team next year, right??

Rich Cimini
  (2:53 PM)

No chance.

Dan (Manhattan)

NY Jets 2013 2nd round pick to Miami for Matt Moore - Who says no?

Rich Cimini
  (2:54 PM)

That would be a terrible trade. A 2?

Dan (Manhattan)

Do you think this absolutely disastrous Jets season will hurt the team in terms of signing free agents? Are the Jets really an unattractive spot to come play?

Rich Cimini
  (2:54 PM)

No, money talks.

Rob (NYC)

Hey Rich, We hear that the Jets are up against the cap. What contracts do they have that they cant improve their talent? Seems like they are a couple of years from competing again.

Rich Cimini
  (2:55 PM)

Not true. Cap stories have been overblown.

LeAnne (Washington)

Rich, any chance FireMan Ed returns for his role in the Jets stands again?

Rich Cimini
  (2:55 PM)

I haven't been any time thinking about that.

George (NJ)

If the Jets are going to keep Rex Ryan as head coach they are going to need to fire Sparano and Cavanaugh and spend the money necessary to hire a qualified offensive coordinator. What do you think about the Jets making a run at Norv Turner if he is fired?

Rich Cimini
  (2:56 PM)

Turner would be an interesting guy. Remember when Rex tweaked him a couple of years ago?

Bill (NY)

Rich, I have to say I have been impressed with Wilkerson's progression in the run game this season. He does a great job of getting of blocks and finding the ball carrier. I think his pass rushing skills would vastly improve if he had a player opposite him that could consistently get to the quarterback. He could be as good a player as Shaun Ellis was when he had Abraham across from him.

Rich Cimini
  (2:57 PM)

Excellent observations. Mo Wilk has improved and will be a good player for a long time. Still needs some work as a pass rusher, though.

Marco (Bloomfield, NY)

Rich - nice work as always. Can you put a % on Ryan and Tanny coming back? I'm not a big fan of changing coaches all the time but this organization seems lost. How about potential candidates? I would love to see Gruden come to town, any chance?

Rich Cimini
  (2:58 PM)

I think Ryan will be back. I think Tanny will be back, perhaps in a different role.

Matt (Washington D.C.)

Hey Rich,What are the odds of Sanchez being the starter opening week next year? Do you think he'd agree to a pay cut to work out some sort of trade to have a fresh start for both sides?

Rich Cimini
  (2:59 PM)

Interesting thought. But who'd be interested?

Bob (Newark, NJ)

Does Tebow have any trade value at this point?

Rich Cimini
  (2:59 PM)

They'll get a 6 for him.

Bob (London)

What the Jets planning to do about OLB? Hearing a lot that both Pace and Thomas are done; if this is true, is there anyone in house who Rex/Tanny think can replace them?

Rich Cimini
  (3:00 PM)

No one in house.

Rich Cimini
  (3:01 PM)

Sorry, but I'm out of time. Thanks for all the questions. Sorry I couldn't get to more. Have a great weekend and try to enjoy the game. Make nice, so old Bart doesn't get riled up. :) Rich
