Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome to our weekly chat. Let's go.

Jacob (Australia)

Hey Calvin, if Dallas makes the playoffs, do you think they overextend with their late 1st round draft pick and look for a QB like Geno Smith?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:01 PM)

If the Cowboys make the postseason, they're not going to use a first-round pick on a quarterback. I would think getting a pass rusher or a guard/center is the way to go in the first round.

Rich (New Jersey)

Hi Calvin, The Cowboys & Redskins @ 5-6 are the 9th and 10th seeds and in the playoff hunt, what are the Cowboys chances of making the playoffs since they have an easy schedule.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:04 PM)

I don't believe the schedule is that easy. Sure the records of the teams are below .500, for the exception of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, but after the Eagles game it doesn't get easy.A road game against a Bengals team that's still in the playoff mix is no gimmy. Pittsburgh might have Big Ben back. New Orleans is still talented and the regular season finale at Washington might mean more to the home team than the Cowboys.

John T. Gold (Salt Lake City)

How would you describe Anthony Spencer work ethic. Did he turn the corner or playing for a contract? If Cowboys give him a contract will he continue to play so well?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:06 PM)

Spencer has set a career-high in sacks 6.5, and he's on pace to get at least 10 sacks this season. He's played hard this year, better than last year. It was sad to hear him talk about him not putting forth the effort a few years ago. He's always had a relax demeanor about him. But it doesn't mean he's not trying hard. Spencer has produced his best season as a pro. The issue for the Cowboys is to determine if he's worth a long-term contract or getting franchised again.

LeAnne (Washington)

Cal, who sees the most carries at running back this week? I'm leaning Jones.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:06 PM)

Lean toward Murray. He's expected to start this week.

steve (milwaukee,wi)

why are the cowboys so unwilling to spend a first or second round pick on a qb, romo wont be around forever, whats wrong with findinga qb of the future,i think we all remember what happened after aikman ?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:07 PM)

I agree with you. Cowboys have some holes to fill but the key with any draft is getting the best player available. I don't believe in drafting a quarterback just to draft one. Find the best one for your needs or somebody who can push Tony Romo. If one is available in the second or third rounds then do it. Not sure if I want to spend a first-round pick on a quarterback in 2013.

nate keyman (sioux falls)

calvin watkins it's murray going play sunday night & here other question. it's romo going be back next year.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:08 PM)

Murray is going to start and play. Now, Romo will return next year, he's under contract. The problem is do you extend him. The two sides had some talks this season, until Romo tabled them until the offseason. If anything, give Romo a two-year extension and make sure you draft a quarterback.

frank (fl)

Why can't orlando play with the broken hand? not like he caught interceptions anyway

Calvin Watkins
  (3:09 PM)

It takes six-to-eight weeks for the bone to heal properly. He's still wearing a cast so it's impossible for him to play with his arm in a sling. After about four weeks he might be ready to go. Might.

daryl (Queens NY)

Will tyron play this week?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:10 PM)

Smith seemed to be walking pretty good today when I saw him at Valley Ranch. Expect him to start at left tackle.

Chris (Willis TX)

Do you think Harris has a higher ceiling then olgetree and if so should he get more snaps throughout the season?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:11 PM)

Harris is getting more comfortable as a receiver and a returner. He does have more upside, but Ogletree runs nice routes and can make some plays. I would like to see more of Cole Beasley, he's very talented and quarterback friendly, but Jason Garrett believes in Ogletree.

cowboy but win (chihuahua mex)

who pick livings and bernadeu, garrett or jerry jones, what do you know ?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:13 PM)

It's a combination of both. Scouting department looked at both guards and Jerry approved them. Garrett liked Livings' ability to run block.

danny (miami fl)

How surprise are that Witten has 82 catches after a terrible start?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:14 PM)

That's why he's an elite player. I would like to see him get more touchdowns, but he doesn't get the targets like some other tight ends around the league. Witten had a slow start and there were some questions about whether or not he was on a decline. But he's improved or rather played to his level, which is elite.

raul (rio grande city)

Hey Cal, do you think we'll have a new RT next year? I think Jerry should dedicate sometime and go to some of the games and see talent live not just rely on scouts...that way he'll have a better notion of who they are taking...agree?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:14 PM)

If the Cowboys cut Doug Free, make him a post June 1 cut, the team saves $7 million. Do you think Free is on the decline or having an off year?

Joel (Mississippi)

How many new starters on the offensive line next year?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:15 PM)

Maybe three. At RT, C and G.

Don (orlando, florida)

Do you see the Cowboys drafting a left tackle and moving T. Smith back to the right tackle position? He seemed more comfortable there.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:15 PM)

Tyron Smith was drafted to be a left tackle and that's where he's staying. Doug Free might not return in 2013.

darren (NYC)

Do you think Ware is Playing Hurt because he's doesn't look the same?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:17 PM)

Ware is getting treatment for his hamstrings, but he's still a dominant force this season. The hamstring problems are nothing major, but something worth looking at. There have been times Ware has been outplayed by Spencer, but that happens from time-to-time.

boris (brooklyn ny)

Do you think Mike has the cover skill to play in the slot?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:23 PM)

Mike Jenkins can play the slot. He's never done it before this season but expect Vince Agnew to get some time in the slot.

Rashad (Da house)

Georgia or Alabama?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:23 PM)

Alabama. Wouldn't mind an upset though.

michael (freeport)

Why so many slow starts this season? is it bad game planning or predictable play calling?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:25 PM)

Good question. Not sure if it's coaching. You need your players ready to play each game. I look at how ready the Cowboys were for the first Giants game and they outplayed them for 60 minutes. Then Week 2, in Seattle, and the Cowboys just weren't ready to play. Is that coaching? Do you blame the players? If the team doesn't know the importance of a game, then it's on the coaches.

Shaun (TX)

I Thought the cowboys went out and got man to man corners because they better suited the scheme. So why much zone coverage this season? most of there big plays dallas has given up come in zones

Calvin Watkins
  (3:27 PM)

I see a mixture of both. If you're going to play man-to-man, you better have a pass rush that gets to the quarterback. Rob Ryan hasn't pressured as much as we all thought he would this season. He normally sends four pass rushers then as the game progresses he dials it up. The weak pass rush has forced Ryan to play more zone this season.

Kyle (NJ)

How difficult will it be for the Cowboys organization to evaluate the OL in the offseason, mainly because the "projected 5" starters have only played one entire game together (Ravens)?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:27 PM)

The Cowboys know what they have in Costa, but if they're upgrades in free agency or in the draft, then a move will be made. I suspect the right tackle spot will be evaluated long and hard this offseason.

Cameron (Georgia)

has Tyron Crawford played his way into the starting line up?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:28 PM)

Crawford has been getting some good playing time with Kenyon Coleman out. I wonder how much time he'll get with the return of Sean Lissemore. Crawford is a good pass rusher and has been better than expected against the run. He's not a starter just yet, but has a bright future.

BG (Tampa)

Vegas has the Boys favored by 10 vs PHI. Are they really capable of blowing out anyone after what we've seen the 1st 11 gms?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:29 PM)

I don't believe this game is a blowout.

Mike (Omaha)

Guard or pass rusher?? How about a legit free safety?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:29 PM)

Pass rusher.

Vince (Philly)

Have we finally found a legit #1 WR in Dez? He's looked great last few weeks.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:36 PM)

Yes, I believe in Dez Bryant. It was interesting to hear Tony Romo say Bryant is still becoming a student of the game. Miles Austin is more polished and that's because he's been in the league longer. Bryant is moving forward.

joel (mississippi)

Who needs to be replaced on the offensive line?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:36 PM)

Free, Bernadeau and maybe the center.

Ben (Philly)

What are the odds Sean Payton is the head coach here next year? 20%?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:37 PM)

I'd say Payton will coach the Saints next year.

Ben (Philly)

How does the staff think Claiborne has played this year? Only 1 INT so far and he was supposed to be a ball hawk with great hands.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:39 PM)

Mo has been around the ball a lot this year. He's played pretty good and that Eagles game was one of his worst. But Claiborne has a good attitude and is able to bounce back.

Shawn (NC Mtns)

Hey Calvin, Will A. Spencer be back wiht he boys next season?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:40 PM)

No. He wants too much money and the Cowboys have salary cap problems. Spencer has been good this season, but I would let him test the market and go elsewhere.

Lane (NYC)

What would the Cowboys record have to be for Garrett to be fired?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:40 PM)

Cowboys would have to lose the rest of their games for Garrett to get canned. I don't believe that's going to happen.

Jean (Florida)

has miles been disappointing this year or overshawdowed by dez?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:41 PM)

Injuries have hampered Austin this season and Bryant has played well, better than expected. But Austin is still a quality receiver and someone who is dangerous.

Aaron (Houston)

Pick one high profile player to trade and what would you want in return?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:42 PM)

Cowboys have no high-profile player to trade right now. They need their high-profile players. I wouldn't trade, Bryant, Austin, Romo, Murray, Ware, Claiborne, Carr or Smith for anyone.

Shawn (NC Mtns)

Calvin, Do you think that Dez will receive an extended contract in the near future?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:43 PM)

You want to see more consistency from Bryant. So I doubt if the Cowboys will get him a new deal. It wouldn't surprise me if they waited until his contract was up before getting him something new.

Joel (Mississippi)

Does Austin come back or get asked to take less money?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:43 PM)

He's coming back, but I don't think his contract is a problem.

Josh (Scotland, CT)

Always enjoy the chat. There is the POTENTIAL that Dallas can be tied for the last Wild Card Spot late Sunday evening. I believe the Wild Card is not out of reach. Your thoughts?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:44 PM)

I agree. But here's the problem. If the Cowboys are tied for the last wild card spot with Seattle, they lost the tiebreaker. If the Cowboys are tied with Tampa Bay, they win the tiebreaker. So, there's a lot to play for right now. If Washington beats New York, wow, things will really change.

BG (Tampa)

Stay or go next year? Felix, Jenkins, Spencer, Sensabaugh, Ogletree, Free, Spears.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:46 PM)

Go: Felix, Jenkins, Spencer, Ogletree and Free. Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins and Kevin Ogletree become free agents. Spencer won't get franchised so the team will allow him to become a free agent. Free gets cut.Stay: Sensabaugh and Spears. Nothing wrong with having some vets who are contributors.

matt allender (pisgah forest, nc)

Jason Garett will not get the job done, ive heard all the Sean Peyton talk but this team needs disipline, why not John Gruden???

Calvin Watkins
  (3:46 PM)

I think Gruden is happy where he is.

JJ (San Antonio, TD)

Why haven't the cowboys bought back Holland.. With the OLine struggling..

Calvin Watkins
  (3:47 PM)

Cowboys tried to sign Holland back in training camp, but he wanted some playing incentive clauses in his deal. He had a better workout than Derrick Dockery, but the money was too funny for the Cowboys. So, Holland is left at home and Dockery is playing.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:47 PM)

Guys thanks for the chat. Have a great weekend.
