Chat with James Walker

James Walker
  (4:00 PM)

Good Tuesday afternoon, everyone. Plenty to discuss in the AFC East. So let's get started.

Jordan Smith (CT) [via mobile]

Is McElroy's strength problem gone? I know it was a concern in the past.

James Walker
  (4:02 PM)

All through McElroy's college and pro career arm strength has been a weakness. The Jets say he's improved but we didn't really see him throw deep last week. If McElroy plays, he has to prove it. But rarely does a player drastically improve arm strength in the NFL. You usually have it or you don't.

Wreck (Gville, FL)

This year's draft isn't very rich in QBs and the Bills likely have a #9-12 pick, do you think they should attempt to get better at QB or stick with the Fitz?

James Walker
  (4:04 PM)

I don't see a top QB avialable when the Bills pick. Maybe Matt Barkley falls because of his injury. But I think his workouts and interviews will keep his stock high. It's early, but it looks like the Bills can fill other needs like LB in the first round and maybe look to the second round to develop a QB in a year or two.

Wreck (Gville, FL)

There's something to be said for continuity, but do you think it's time for the Bills to part ways with Chan? If so, where do they look for their next head coach? Some young upstart?

James Walker
  (4:05 PM)

I'm going to reserve my take on this until the end of the season. The Bills are 5-7 with four games left. What if Buffalo finishes 9-7 or 8-8? In that event, Gailey should return.

Jason (North Carolina)

Hi Walker, i disagree with your premature statement in reference to only New England making the playoffs this year. Mathematically, the other 3 teams still have a slight shot.

James Walker
  (4:07 PM)

There is a difference between mathematical elimination and realistic elimination. The Bills, Jets and Dolphins are realistically not going to make the playoffs. But it will be a few weeks until they have zero chance.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Hi James - is Mark Sanchez's career salvageable on the Jets or is a change of scenery needed?

James Walker
  (4:07 PM)

Read my column in the AFC East blog today, Harry, and you will have my answer.

Diane (Queensbury N.Y.)

will the bills take a Qb or line backer with their first pick? Any chance they snag Te'o?

James Walker
  (4:09 PM)

Te'o would be the perfect fit for what the Bills need. Buffalo's defense needs an enforcer. But I don't think the Notre Dame LB will be available outside the top 10. The Bills need to lose a few games to have a shot.

Gildo (Kennett Square PA)

hey james who do you think will be a Dolphin in 2013 Greg jennings, mike wallace, and Dwayne Bowe?

James Walker
  (4:11 PM)

The 2013 WR class is a deep one. Even the Dolphins have Brian Hartline and the Patriots have Wes Welker becoming available. Miami has a ton of cap space available and this is one of the positions to use it. Bowe is a Miami native, so I think he has the best shot. Jennings also has a tie to Miami coach Joe Philbin.

Joeseph (Kenmore, NY)

Gailey only made fitz throw 17 times. The ground game was obviously effective. Do you think this is due to the weather or is he finally getting smart?

James Walker
  (4:13 PM)

It's a little bit of both, Joeseph. The weather in Buffalo this time of year makes it hard to air it out 40 times. But I think Gailey also came to the realization that the more attempts Ryan Fitzpatrick has, the less chance Buffalo has to win. He's prone to throw interceptions and at the worst possible time. I've been writing since Sept. that C.J. Spiller needs more carries and Gailey finally listened and won two of the last three games.

Matthew Moore (KC, MO)

It looks like Bush's role has been reduced drastically over the course of the season. Do you think this is an indication he won't be back next year? Are they trying to get Thomas/Miller more touches for this reason?

James Walker
  (4:16 PM)

I don't expect Bush to be in Miami next year. Great guy and a leader in the locker room. But I think Miami's coaching staff likes guys who can run between the tackles more than Bush. The Dolphins have two decent young RBs in Daniel Thomas and Lamar Miller. It doesn't make sense to spend a lot of cap room to bring Bush back.

Jaamal (Queens, NY) [via mobile]

Hey JW, when do you think rex will say who his QB will be vs the jags??

James Walker
  (4:19 PM)

I expect the decision to be made in Ryan's head by tomorrow when the Jets hit the practice field. But that doesn't mean he will share it with the public. Ryan may want to see how the QBs respond in practice. There's a competitive advantage element in this as well, where the Jags have to prepare for three guys instead of one.

Zach (West Babylon, NY)

Have we seen the last of Jake Long in a Dolphins uniform?

James Walker
  (4:21 PM)

There's a good chance Long doesn't return next year, Zach. Long will want to cash in big in free agency. And Miami knows better than any team that he's not the same elite player he was two years ago. Someone will overspend for Long because of the position he plays. But I doubt it will be Miami.

James Walker
  (4:22 PM)

Keep an eye on rookie Jonathan Martin these next few weeks. How he performs at LT these next few weeks will play a big role in Miami's decision-making this offseason.

Dan (Mexico)

Should Buffalo consider drafting a RB in the mid rounds to prepare for Fred Jackson hitting the age wall?

James Walker
  (4:23 PM)

Did you see Fred Jackson last week? I think he will be fine as a No. 2 RB as long as he avoids injury.

Straight Cash Homie (Rand WV)

I never understood why the Dolphins traded Vontae Davis? He's an upper tier corner and it's not like Miami was in total rebuild mode. If they had him Sunday they may have beaten NE. Do they regret that decision?

James Walker
  (4:24 PM)

I had no problem with Miami trading Davis. The Colts offered a second-round pick. That's a lot of value for a player Miami probably wasn't going to re-sign next year. The Dolphins also were counting on Richard Marshall to stay healthy this year, and that wasn't the case. But I don't think Miami regrets the decision.

Ted (RI)

I know you do your predictions later in the week and all that but do you expect Brady to spread things out and attack Houston's banged up secondary through the air? If so could be a shoot out?

James Walker
  (4:28 PM)

I do expect New England to force as many Houston DBs on the field as possible. The Texans are thin in that area and the Patriots must exploit that weakness. The Texans also struggled a couple games ago against an inside run play against the Lions on Thanksgiving. I expect to see a lot of that from New England with Woodhead and Ridley.

Aaron (Boston)

Do you realistically see the patriots grabbing a first round bye?

James Walker
  (4:28 PM)

If the season ended today, that would be the case.

James Walker
  (4:29 PM)

But there are four games left and the Patriots, Ravens and Broncos all have tough schedules. It's going to be a tight race.

Kenny (Philly)

What's better for the Bills - win out and show progress or lose them and get the higher draft picks?

James Walker
  (4:31 PM)

I'm never for tanking games. The draft isn't until April. The point is to win now. If Gailey lost too many games his job would be on the line.

AJ (Oakland)

Give us your thoughts on Alfonso Denard? I see a more physical version of Asante Samuel in him. Wishful thinking on my part?

James Walker
  (4:33 PM)

I haven't thought much about the Samuel comparison. But I like Dennard. He challenges WRs and seems to be fearless. The Patriots got a nice find in the seventh round.

Zach (West Babylon, NY)

Whats the one thing that has surprised you the most in the AFC EAST?

James Walker
  (4:34 PM)

Just how inconsistent the division is. Obviously the Patriots are top notch. But I thought at least one other team in the past two years would step up and play solid football. That hasn't happened.

Carl (connecticut)

Why is everyone love Mccourty and Chung they're so overrrated and there the reason why we lost some games what do you think? Is it time for them to move on.

James Walker
  (4:37 PM)

People are in love with McCourty and Chung at safety? I must have missed those memos. New England's secondary is not very good, although I like Talib and Dennard at CB.

James Walker
  (4:37 PM)

Patrick Chung, by the way, is a free agent after this season.

Zach (West Babylon, NY)

Do you see Miami making Rookie TE Egnew active for one game before the season ends?

James Walker
  (4:39 PM)

I haven't seen anything from Egnew. He's too raw and his blocking could get Ryan Tannehill injured. The only way is by force, where the Dolphins may want to see him in a game situation. But he hasn't earned playing time.

Darryl (Toronto, CANADA)

Can the Dolphins be contenders next year?

James Walker
  (4:40 PM)

Let's see if they make the right decisions in the draft and free agency. The potential is there, but Jeff Ireland has a lot of big decisions to make.

Rob (SW Colo) [via mobile]

How 'bout the Pats chances for #1 seed & homefield asvantage? The Texans still have to play the Colts twice with that secondary.

James Walker
  (4:42 PM)

I don't see the Patriots getting home-field advantage. They would have to make up two games in four weeks. A win on Monday would make up one game. But Houston still has to lose at least one more game and New England has to go 4-0.

James Walker
  (4:42 PM)

The important thing is to get the No. 2 seed. The bye is more important.

Brendan (New Jersey)

What's your thoughts on Dolphins SS Reshad Jones? He's been playing great as of late.

James Walker
  (4:43 PM)

Good player who is growing into his own and getting better this season. He will be a starter next year.

Dave (Charlotte)

So now what? Does Sanchez become one of if not the highest paid back up in Football? Try to trade for him? Hope he somehow becomes good again?

James Walker
  (4:47 PM)

The Jets have no choice but to keep him. The $8.25 million is guaranteed. No team will take Sanchez in a trade for that kind of money. NY's cap situation is so tight that you can't pay another QB $8 million a year in free agency. Jets won't have a top draft pick to take a QB.

Donkey (the Barn)

How many more years do you see Brady playing, and thus the Patriots AFCE dominance lasting?

James Walker
  (4:49 PM)

Tom Brady says he wants to play until he's 40. It's all about how his body holds up physically.

The Man (The Man Cave)

How does Miami match up against SF this coming Sunday?

James Walker
  (4:50 PM)

Well, the Dolphins haven't done well against mobile quarterbacks. Russell Wilson and even Andrew Luck and Jake Locker gave Miami fits using their legs and keeping plays alive. I think the Dolphins will struggle against Colin Kaepernick, who is an even better athlete.

Thats Mr Welker (Boston, Mass.)

Do you think I make it clear to Miami fans that they made a mistake in trading me?

James Walker
  (4:52 PM)

Since you're a free agent, the Dolphins can dump the money truck your way and bring you back next year if they want.

Joe Namath (Hollywood)

How do you respond to the Tom Brady haters who say he is a product of the Bellichick system and really isn't all that great?

James Walker
  (4:54 PM)

I could make the case that Belichick is a product of Tom Brady.

James Walker
  (4:55 PM)

Don't get me wrong. Both are among the best ever at their respective positions. But both have raised each other's level, and a case can be made that Brady lifted Belichick more.

James Walker
  (4:57 PM)

I would be interested to see if Belichick sticks around much longer after Brady retires. I would be curious to see how well the Patriots do with just Belichick for a few years.

Wreck (Gville, FL)

What do you want for Christmas?

James Walker
  (4:57 PM)

I'm still trying to figure that out.

James Walker
  (4:57 PM)

Any ideas?

Brendan (New Jersey)

Woody Johnson wants Greg McElroy, while Tony Sparano and Mike Tannenbaum want Mark Sanchez. What do you think of this?

James Walker
  (5:00 PM)

That is the report, according to the New York Daily News. The Jets have not confirmed it and probably won't. But I wouldn't be surprised. The Jets haven't been on the same page all year.

James Walker
  (5:00 PM)

Everyone, thanks again for the great questions. Remember the check out the AFC East blog for all the latest.
