Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

Let's chat it up!

Luke (Waterdown, Ontario)

Who do you have as NFL MVP right now? Do you see AD getting any votes?

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

I see a two horse race between P Manning and Brady and I slightly favor Brady, but I feel like I am in the minority. Peterson will get votes for sure, but his team isn't a contender, which will squash his chances.

JD (Texas)

Russell Wilson for ROY. I know that he won't get it but he should at least be in the conversation.

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

No doubt. My Rookie Report JUST came out and I have Wilson 3rd on the list. Super impressive.

Luke (Waterdown, Ontario)

Tannehill looks to be struggling; however, one thing he is doing well now, is pulling the ball down and gaining yards with his legs. What would you like to see next of him in his development?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

He doesn't worry me and is stil hanging on at #10 on my Rookie Report, but he REALLY needs some better weaponry to throw to. Seems to be adapting by pulling it down more like you mentioned-and he is excellent at it. But that isn't a skill you can constantly rely on as an NFL QB.

Jeff Roemer (Tampa)

MW, making my way through your Rookie Watch, one of my weekly faves: Blackmon's improvement (and ultimate ceiling) aside, I think it's still next to impossible to justify his draft slot. What makes you think the opposite?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

I don't think the opposite. I think it was a reach, but I do think he is coming around-and obviously WR was a massive need for JAX. I see him as a solid #2 WR in the NFL, not a star. Just featured him this week since I haven't yet and he has come on of late. I would say Givens and esp Gordon have been superior in their rookie seasons.

Carl (Salt Lake City)

You think MJD's out for the year? Think there's more going on than just his injury as far as not coming back yet?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

I sure would not rush MJD (or McCoy or McFadden for that matter) back for these final games. Just makes no sense considering the nature of the RB position and these guys overall value to their team long term.

The Reverend Baby Doctor Bedpan (Atlanta, not Hotlanta.....)

No love for Matt Ryan as MVP?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

In the convo, but hasn't played as well as Manning or Brady

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

"That's the Way" Plant and Page No Quarter-fantastic

Ted (RI)

Do you see Brady and the NE passing game spreading it out and taking advantage of Houston's banged up secondary to get a big win on MNF?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

They could, but I actually think Houston's base D is weaker-esp vs. the pass. They are weak at NT and now at both ILB positions, which is a massive problem vs. Hernandez in particular, but also Ridley in the run game.

Rick (kansas)

Are Pioli and Crennel a lock to keep their jobs after the way they handled the tragedy this past weekend? I commend them for the way they have handled the situation, but it doesn't erase the fact the team is still 2-10

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

I think they are anything but a lock to keep their job

Brian (Fishers, IN)

So let's say Sanchez flops, and gets cut by the jets at the end of the season. Would anyone sign him, given his contract?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Well, if that were the case, the new team would sign him to a new contract. And yes, he would get signed. Could be a good backup and I think a change of scenery would be great for him.

The Reverend Baby Doctor Bedpan (Atlanta, not Hotlanta.....)

11 - 1 seems to indicate he(Ryan) is playing as well, if not better for the bulk of the season.

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

He is playing great, but not as well in my opinion....those two are at a different level

Shawn (Toronto)

Matt, in your opinion, should the Chiefs clean house and show Pioli and Crennel the door? Keep one, both?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

Clean house, draft a QB in the top two rounds, sign a guy like Alex Smith to hold down the fort as the rook develops and keep much of their current personnel

Kyle (St. Louis)

What is the Rams biggest need, WR or OL?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

I like Dahl, Wells and Saffold, but they need two new starting OLinemen...that is their biggest need

Michael (Cincinnati)

How shrewd a move was it to draft Josh Gordon in the supplemental?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

I had my doubts at the time since I expected that to be a Top 35 pick overall or so...but commend the Browns Front Office for this pick and overall, what they have done of late. Was on ESPN Radio in Cleveland last night talking about the exact same thing. I hope that, if there are changes-which sound like will happen, that the new staff doesn't blow the whole thing up

Juan (US)

Hi Matt, From your perspective, what are the weakness and strenghts for both, Patriots and Texans and who is in better position to exploit them on Monday night. Thanks --

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Scroll back a bit to see how to best exploit Houston, but also-their edge pass rush is a real problem. As for the Pats, it is all about their secondary/pass rush and giving up huge plays deep downfield, but I think they are improving in that area and I don't trust that Houston can truly exploit it

Jeff Roemer (Tampa)

My two cents on KC: Pioli has got to be done. Part of a decisionmaker's job is separating the emotional (Belcher fallout) from the resultative, so that shouldn't save him. Crennel has a higher survival rate, I think, because this was his first full year, he's respected around the industry, and QB-personnel culprit likely won't fall as much on him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

I agree, but I also have seen little from RAC to say that he is a good head coach...great DC though

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Did you watch Earl Campbell play? Are you going to watch the special on him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

What special? Love Campbell and he was before my time for the most part, but remember some epic battles with Campbell vs. the Steelers when I was very young and LOVE seeing his highlights as much as ANY RB in history. Special player.

Jeff (Nashville )

Who wins the NFC North?

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

GB...but I think they are rather flawed none the less

Tom (Canton)

MW - who is the better player of the 3, Von Von, Watt or Aldon Smith? And who wins DPOY after all is said and done?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Von is the best D player in football and should win the DMVP...that isn't "Hating" on the other two-they are fantastic as well and Watt would def get my vote for 2nd. Miller is amazing and will be an all time great.

Steiny (NYC)

Can we get Matty Ice in the main window please??

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Not even sure what that means...coach me up please

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

Today's Football Today was just released....just an FYI

MW (GB, WI)

Can the Packers get healthy enough soon enough to make a difference in the playoffs, or do their problems run much deeper than their IR list?

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Their running game and specifically, their RBs, really stink. I understand filling that position with cheap talent, but in this case it is killing the Pack. They need to use a high pick on a RB.

Jeff Roemer (Tampa)

MW, Earl Campbell special "Still Standing" aired on NBC Sports Network last night and will encore a few times throughout the week. I DVR'd it and expect it to be stellar. On this note, Barry Sanders "A Football Life" tonight on NFL Network and Bo Jackson "30 for 30" following the Heisman on ESPN Saturday.

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Have seen all of A Football Life series...awesome...will def DVR the other two. Thanks!

Awayne (Indy)

What do the Bengals need to do to get from borderline playoff team to SB contender?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

That is a tough one because Dalton is a good QB, but I don't think he will ever be great or a guy that can consistently take over playoff games. They don't have massive holes, although I not real fond of their RB situation or secondary

Anthony (KC, MO)

Not to be insensitive, but J. Belcher was a ILB.... & Manti Tea??o plays ILB at Notre Dame...... QB in the 2nd round for the Chiefs...... Seems pretty set in stone if the Chiefs get the 1st pick. Wow, the NFL really waits for no one huh???

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

ILB is a need and I have no problem with KC using that real early 2nd rounder on QB instead of their 1st overall pick, but I would have a REAL hard time going ILB with the first overall pick. I don't claim to know this draft yet, but is Teo THAT special? Have seen two ND games this year and by no means did I think he qualified for such an honor.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Along with the Pats have Houston & Denver overtaken Baltimore

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

By far. Actually, I think they are three of the top four teams in the NFL right now...if not the best three

Lou (NYC)

An ILB with the first pick in the draft? Not in this lifetime.

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

Indeed....better end up being Butkus or Lewis

chilly (wasted, po)

If Newton, RG3, Luck, Kaep, Dalton and Wilson were all in next years draft - how would you rank them? also, i'd compare kaep's upside to a more mobile big ben, and RG3's to a more mobile (saying something) aaron rodgers - what do you think?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Good comparisons...I would draft them in this order: Luck, RG3, Newton, Wilson, CK....gap...Dalton...but I had a really tough time picking between CK, Wilson and Newton and if you asked me again in two weeks their order might be changed

jt (tampa)

Bryce brown. Very impressive. What should Phil do with him and mccoy next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Run the ball more!

Nick (Wisconsin)

As someone that has watched ND all season, I'll say this: Teo has improved his weaknesses this season considerably, has the "leader label" down pat. I think he warrants "special" status and should be a top 10 pick in the draft. Taking him 1st overall is silly though...

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

I can buy that...excited to really dig into the draft prospects here, but just don't have the time

SC (MN)

Any chance of Ponder turning it around or do the Vikings have to start over at QB? What would be your approach heading into 2013?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

I am/was a Ponder believer and their WRs are really lacking with Harvin out, but he has been AWFUL. I don't think I would go QB real high in the draft, but I would bring in an established vet and open the competition for job up and see how it shakes out in camp

Evan (Bmore)

What will it take for the Ravens to give Joe a chance with a new O Coordinator? He's peaked in this offense that's built around perfect throws on 9 routes. Joe has his problems but they do nothing to help him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Totally agree. He shouldn't be without blame, but I don't understand this O at all. Before this year, it might have been the most simplistic in the NFL. Last week Rice doesn't get a touch in the 4th Q and like you said, the passing game is all about bombs and they don't help their QB, which is exactly what coaching is all about.

Awayne (Indy)

Is Andrew Lucks comp % something to worry about or does the fact that he throws so many deep balls and it keeps his average per attempt numbers at league average make up for it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Slight concern, same with his risk taking/INTs/poor decisions, but I agree that much of that is just from throwing so much, esp deep. I have no worries about Luck's accuracy overall or his ability to make great decisions.

Brandon (Phoenix, AZ)

Why couldn't the Chiefs suck last year? Dammit.

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Extremely well said! lol

Nolen (Canada)

The Lions have stunk this season. Were they overrated?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

Maybe a bit...young and immature team...and not that far away from that 0-16 team that Schwartz and company took over not long ago. Too reliant on the pass and the D needs some major work with their back 7 and even at DE

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Who did scouts whiff more on - Victor Cruz or Cecil Shorts III?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

You see some small school WRs slip through the cracks maybe more than any other position because at that level, an NFL caliber WR should simply dominate a bunch of D players that will be doing something other than playing football for a living-and there are some brutal CBs at that level. But WR is also so dependent on having at least an adaquate QB. Not making excuses for the scouting commnunity and you are certainly right.

John (Wisc)

with James Starks out (IR?) The Packers signed Ryan Grant this morning. What if anything can he give the Packers? Other then fresh legs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Runs hard in a straight line and knows the O...understands pass pro....best I can say about him.

Harry (Babylon, NY)

Can you see RGIII cutting back on the runs as his career develops - it seems like he gets hit hard 4-5 times a game. That can't be good for his longevity.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

No doubt about it. That can't keep up and that will be a crossroads in his career as he further develops into more of a pocket passer. Running option specifically leads to just monster hits.

Massimo (St. Louis)

It's time you put Brockers on your Rookie Report list. The kid is a BEAST.

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

You might be right about that.

Matt (Houston)

Brighter future...SD sans Norv or PHI sans Andy?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Hard to say, but I would rather take over the Philly job...even though I am all about QBs and SD is better off at that position. SD needs more work, esp on O

Sebastian (Las Cruces )

Which non QB should win ROY?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

It will be a QB, but on O? Martin or Morris

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Pick your unlimate front 4, using whatever players you want (OLBs etc)...go!

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Miller, Watt, Atkins, Ware....just off the top of my head....makes me very light up front though...might need to mix in a Wilfork

Massimo (St. Louis)

I just saw your list, no Jenkins, Zuerline, or Brockers? You're clueless, but i knew that when you were claiming Steven Jackson had lost a step last year. ps. nobody cares what you are listening to!

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Thanks for the kind words. I just said that Brockers prob needs to be mentioned-although he missed serious time early in the season if you recall. Also, I had kickers on the list early in the season, but cut them all out a few weeks ago-to thin the heard...which is probably what I should do with your contributions to this chat. As for Jenkins, I am very high on him overall and he has made some big/huge plays. But he also constantly gets picked on...or maybe you haven't noticed that. Thanks again. Counting Crows now "Rain King"...the live version

Greg (ID)

Seattle chances for playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Strong...check out my Scouts Buzz from Sunday Night

Roscoe (PA)

How do you feel about the Broncos?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

I began skeptical...but they are REALLY growing on me. 2nd on my Power Ranks behind NE

Simcoe (Yakima)

Who is your choice(s) for coach of the year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

First I have thought of it. How about Fisher? No one jumping off the page. Smith in ATL? The Colts combo?

Ben (DSM,IA)

Steelers the rest of the way, do what??

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Catch fire and gain serious steam entering the playoffs

Jay (Cleveland)

Is Dez Bryant a suitable comparison for a future Josh Gordon? Given that Gordon doesn't come with all the baggage Dez supposedly contains

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

I think that is too generous to Gordon. I like Gordon a lot, but Dez is quickly emerging as a Top 5 type WR and def has Top 5 talent.

Hotcakes (Vancouver)

You ever watch CFL?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

That was one of my duties when I was with CLEV. Put a big package together of about 10 guys that I thought would really help us when the CFL season ended...led by Cameron Wake...but then everyone got fired and I never got the opportunity to present it to anyone! Still have it...should go back and check it out, but I do remember that Wake was my top target

Quinn (SC)

With all of the first and second year players they've added, do you think the Packers young secondary will develop into one of the league's strongest in a few years?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

I do, but I also fear that Woodson is on his last leg. But their DB draft was excellent. Value! Still need to work on pass rush

Brian (Tampa)

Is it just me, or is Andrew Luck probably about 1 of 5 QBs in the NFL with the pocket presence and size to survive the entire season behind the Colts OL right now?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Sounds about right

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

If you were down 4 with 1;30 left, what QB you taking to lead you down the field?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Gotta say Rodgers...maybe his track record in such instances isn't as lengthy as the Mannings, Ben, Brady, Brees, but he is just a total superstar

Dave (Charlotte)

Who was the coach in Cleveland when you worked there?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Butch Davis hired me, he was let go during the season and replaced by Robiskie as an interm and then Romeo took over that offseason....three head coaches in my one NFL season!

Eric (San Diego)

Call me crazy, but all other issues aside, I think San Diego would still be a wild card team with a competent o-line. Am I delusional?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Not delusional. The D is good enough. Rivers NEEDS that OL now and just doesn't have it at all

Ol Ball Coach (Vancouver BC)

what would it take to get you back to the nfl, or college, and not just typing/talking about it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

I miss the guys and game day for sure, but honestly-not just saying this-this is the best job I have ever had. See a ton of my family-get to be on top of the entire league. Very little travel. Love it. I have gotten some interest from the league, etc and of course I listen, but happy as can be doing what I am doing

Dave (Charlotte)

Was working for an NFL team as glamorous as us fans dream it would be?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

It is pretty cool! No doubt...the hours are rather amazing though-can wear on anyone

AJ (Oakland)

Does Norv receive unfair blame for the mess in SD? I personally blame AJ Smith. He let Vincent walk and decides what players he'll give Turner to work with. Plus the injuries on the o-line have been devastating.

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Agreed...not in favor of keeping Norv, but Smith deserves more blame. That roster really isn't very good

Mike (NYC)

4 games left - who wins the NFCE?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Going with NYG...this loss certainly hurts, but I just trust this team/organization/coach/QB more than the others and think they are clearly the best team in the division.

Dan (MA)

If you are the Dolphins, who do you target for a WR? I say re-sign Hartline and go hard after Mike Wallace. It would free up Hartline and Bess to work underneath and might open the door for Clay to emerge. Your thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Agree...wouldn't hurt to draft a TE to add to that mix with Clay too. I am not super excited about Wallace, but his skill set would fit in well. Bowe grew up in Miami...just saying

Silver (Dark Side)

Where do you see Jake Long landing next year?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Really tough to let him walk and could be a Franchise Tag option, but he really hasn't played very well this year...and hurt now. I think it comes down to the team docs/trainers...how healthy is he and how healthy can he be?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Folks, I am out...Adios
