Chat with David Ching

David Ching
  (12:01 PM)

Hi everybody. Hope you're all doing well. Let's get started.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What College Football Bowl Game are you looking forward seeing this season?

David Ching
  (12:03 PM)

Had to look at a bowl schedule for that one. LSU-Clemson ought to be interesting. Oregon-K-State. Texas A&M-Oklahoma. I think those will all be entertaining games.

Evan (Auburn, Ala.)

Should Georgia fans be excited or worried about Gus Malzahn returning to the SEC?

David Ching
  (12:05 PM)

Not sure Evan. I thought he was very good at Auburn as OC, but we haven't seen enough of him as a college head coach to know what he really will be able to do over there. I'd say Georgia fans have bigger concerns than what he does at Auburn for right now. It's going to be a while before they get it back together, I think.

allan (austin texas)

Does UGA still have a chance to land some of the top recruits?

David Ching
  (12:06 PM)

Absolutely. I think they're going to land a couple of big-time players between now and signing day. It's going to be a very solid class.

allan (austin texas)

Where doe UGA rank among the top programs in America? Are they considered a top 10 program?

David Ching
  (12:08 PM)

Right around the top 10. There's a class of all-timers like Notre Dame, Alabama, Michigan etc. that sit at the top of the sport's hierarchy and I think Georgia is in that next group of top programs that rank around the top 10 somewhere.

Sid (Leesburg,GA)

My friend is a Georgia fan and I am a FSU fan. We argue everyday about who is better and would win. If they were playing this postseason, who would you see winning? Do you think this game could happen soon?

David Ching
  (12:09 PM)

I'd see Georgia winning an entertaining game this year. Hard to say that for sure except that their common opponent, Florida, was a win for Georgia and an L for FSU. I doubt they play in the regular season anytime soon, but the playoffs start in 2014. You never know who might pop into that as a possible matchup.

allan (austin texas)

DO you have a projection for Georgia record wise next yr? How many players do you think we lose off that defense?

David Ching
  (12:11 PM)

The schedule is so tough early in the season that it might be tough on a regrouping defense. I'd say as of right now I expect their record to fall between 8-4 and 10-2 next year. Long way to go until then.

David Ching
  (12:11 PM)

And they lose a ton off of this defense. Probably eight starters from the SEC championship game plus two key reserves.

Nick (Athens)

Let me know if you agree with this statement. If Murray returns the Dawgs will be much like Oregon, relying on high powered offense with the ability to blow teams out with threats at running back and receiver. Defense may be somewhat of a liability, but still has enough talent to make big plays when needed. Dawgs still in the hunt for not only SEC, but also BCS.

David Ching
  (12:14 PM)

That's an interesting thought Nick. Maybe. That's kind of what happened in the SEC championship game in the second half, wasn't it? I'd say that's a possibility, but I don't think Georgia changes much philosophically next year. They certainly could be much better on one side of the ball than on the other at the start of the season, though.

Sid (Leesburg,GA)

Do you see the SEC expanding in the near future? If so, what 2 teams do you think will get in?

David Ching
  (12:16 PM)

Not sure Sid. If they were going to add teams, the schools that I'd LIKE to see them add would be Florida State and Clemson, but I don't think either of those would happen. I guess if they were going to add teams, Virginia Tech and N.C. State were two possibilities mentioned last time around that would make sense from the business perspective they use to add teams.

DrTIKI (Myrtle Beach)

Reuben Fosters last comments regarding Taylor sounds to me like Rueben is used as a Pawn to keep Trooper's job or at least get him a good one if Gus kicks him to the curb?

David Ching
  (12:17 PM)

That seems to be kind of a strange situation. I really don't know what's going on there.

CJ (Atlanta)

Any word on whether or not Murray is coming back? And what is the general feeling on how mason will do should he leave?

David Ching
  (12:18 PM)

Not sure on Murray. I think there are good reasons for him to stay and good reasons for him to go. But I know the coaching staff is very confident in Mason's ability to hold down the job once the opportunity arises.

Husker in Atlanta (Stone Mountain actually)

Wow.....I'm getting abused by my UGA friends......They seem to think Nebraska will be easy.......Agree?

David Ching
  (12:20 PM)

I think Georgia will win comfortably, yeah, but it'll be a fun game to watch for a while. Neither one of them has done a great job against the run. But Georgia didn't give up 70 points in its last game. I have a feeling Georgia will exploit that defense a bit.

G (Dawgland)

Any chance Jones and/or Ogletree come back next year or are they gone to the NFL?

David Ching
  (12:21 PM)

I haven't heard anything definitive, but I'd be surprised if either player returns. There is not a good reason for either of them to come back in my opinion.

Paul (Cumming GA)

what are the odds that we make room on our staff for Trooper Taylor so we can get Foster? Can there be negative odds?

David Ching
  (12:22 PM)

It's safe to say that isn't going to happen.

GADevildawgs (Cumming GA)

what is the general consensus on Geathers. Return of NFL?

David Ching
  (12:24 PM)

That's a more interesting case than Jones and Ogletree. I tend to think he's going to the league, but I think another year in college could help him. Reading his evals, it's pretty clear that he's viewed as a two-down player in the league only. A good final season where he proved to be a better pass rusher and functioned as an every-down player would help his draft status. But I think he'd get drafted if he left after the season.

Ryan (Detroit)

It sucks that UGA got left out of the BCS, but if its any consolation, Arkansas just made another bad coaching hire.

David Ching
  (12:25 PM)

You think so? I thought that was a pretty good hire. But obviously I'm only so familiar with what he did at Wisconsin. A bunch of Rose Bowls and all that looked like a solid resume to me.

Ryan (Detroit)

Is there any truth to the rumor that if you and Chris Low touch foreheads then it will open a portal to another dimension?

David Ching
  (12:26 PM)

Possibly. I'll have to make sure to stay away from Chris' head.

David Ching
  (12:26 PM)

Possibly. I'll have to make sure to stay away from Chris' head.

Brad (Atlanta)

Does Aaron Murray stay for another year?

David Ching
  (12:27 PM)

Maybe. If I'm Aaron, I probably return, but I don't think there is an easy yes or no answer to this one. The QB class in this draft will not be very strong.

Chris (Daytona, FL)

How do you feel about the whole UGA being left out of the Sugar bowl and Florida getting in? First off, I'm a UF fan and am excited about being back in the BCS after a 7-6 season last year. However, I can definitely understand UGA fans' complaints about how losing the SEC Championship cost them the Sugar. Let's be honest though, if the shoe was on the other foot and UF won the division and lost to Bama, UGA fans would be very happy to accept the Sugar in our place. Thoughts?

David Ching
  (12:29 PM)

I think that's very true Chris. My opinion is it shouldn't be an either-or discussion. Florida belongs in the BCS. So does Georgia. My gripe is that the system in place is not about putting the nation's best teams in supposedly the top bowl games. It's not Florida's fault that the system is so flawed.

DOUGLISVILLE DAWG (HOTLANTA!!!)

IS THERE N E CHANCE THE DAWGS COULD STIL WIN THE NATONAL CHAMPONSHIP THIS YEAR SAY IF BANA AND NORTER DAME TIE?

David Ching
  (12:30 PM)

I'll have to look into that one. If it's not in the rules, it should be.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

How can a Georgia defense with so many projected NFL players be run over for 300 yards like they were by Alabama Saturday night?

David Ching
  (12:31 PM)

Bad tackling. That and Alabama's OL wore down Georgia's front line with a huge time of possession advantage. Alabama's line was very impressive. Lacy and Yeldon are pretty good, too.

David Ching
  (12:31 PM)

Kevin (Newnan,Ga)

Would losing the lead on last play or just coming up short like they did have been better for thr Dawgs.

David Ching
  (12:33 PM)

I don't think either of those things would be particularly "good." But I'd say the way it ended would be preferable to someone else making the score to beat them at the end. They were in the aggressor's position here and somehow that seems like a better place to be to me.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Should Bulldog fans object to the question asked to Mark Richt in the posgame PC, or simply the way it was phrased? Isn't it the same question many Georgia faithful have been asking themselves?

David Ching
  (12:34 PM)

That's the thing Tony. It's not like that was a new question. I think it could have been asked in a more respectful manner and it never would have become a story.

Tim (Atlanta, GA)

Do you see Kwame departing for the NFL this year? If so, who are we looking at to replace Big John at NG?

David Ching
  (12:35 PM)

My assumption is he probably goes. As of right now, I'd expect Jonathan Taylor and Mike Thornton to duke it out for that NG spot.

Keenan (Atlanta, GA)

Do you think Tunsil and Adams will sign with the Dawgs? Is Georgia currently pursuing any of the Auburn decommits?

David Ching
  (12:36 PM)

Yes, maybe and not sure.

Husker in Atlanta (Now in Decatur)

Win comfortably? Score prediction?

David Ching
  (12:36 PM)

38-21.

Jim Bradley (Lakemont, GA)

Why is LSU "13 class above UGA?

David Ching
  (12:37 PM)

I don't know that much about LSU's class, but something I like about the way Luginbill and the recruiting guys do their class ratings is taking into account how the class will meet the team's needs. That's a key factor that always needs to be taken into account with each class.

Will (Atlanta)

Should we be worried about Grantham or Bobo pursuing other opportunities this off-season? There are so many coaching vacancies out there it's hard to believe they won't at least be contacted. Depending on the offer, would they leave or are they committed (to the G)?

David Ching
  (12:39 PM)

Certainly that would depend on the opportunity. We're a long way from all the open jobs being filled, so it's way too early to speculate with any confidence on that. I'm sure both guys would like to become head coaches when the right job comes along.

Dave (Tampa, FL)

Where do you think the Dawgs will be ranked preseason in 2013?

David Ching
  (12:39 PM)

I'll guess between 10 and 15. Probably closer to 15 because of the losses on defense.

Jimmy (Vidalia GA)

If Jimbo Fisher leaves FSU do you think Richt would return to his old stomping grounds?

David Ching
  (12:40 PM)

No chance.

Andre (Roswell, GA)

Do you think Georgia will return strong for the bowl game, or suffer from a hangover?

David Ching
  (12:41 PM)

That's the big question, isn't it Andre? I think they'll be fine. Even if they have a lot of guys who will be looking toward the draft, I have a hard time believing guys like Jarvis Jones and Shawn Williams would ever take the field and not play hard. They have a good group of seniors that want to go out the right way and I think that will help.

Ronnie (OH)

David, do you find it to be somewhat unfair that players are forced to sit out a year if they decide to transfer, while a coach who is under contract, can break his contract and leave for another job at anytime? What I propose is applying a similar transfer rule to coaches. If a school wants to hire a coach who is currently under contract with another school, they should have to find someone to take on the interim gig for one year, while the new coach sits out. I think this would really prevent a lot of coaches from essentially operating under a Machiavellian philosophy and using the programs that give them opportunities as mere stepping stones. Your thoughts?

David Ching
  (12:42 PM)

I think that sounds like a great idea, but I'm not sure if that's legal.

Jeff28 (Indiana)

Do you see SEC teams beefing up non-conference schedules to try and be the 2nd SEC team chosen for the 4 team playoff? Or are the lay-up games going to continue?

David Ching
  (12:44 PM)

Good question. I tend to think the layup games continue. A couple of mid-level non-BCS games, an FCS game and one BCS-level non-conference game. That looks to be the model for most of them.

Brandon (Travis AFB CA)

do you think there are some solid 5 star recruits out there that will commit to ga now that were losing most of our talent to the nfl and will they be able to come and start and make a postive impact on the D as freshman?

David Ching
  (12:46 PM)

I think they know exactly who they want to fill the remaining slots in this class. And yeah, I'd say one or two of them would be at that level.

David Ching
  (12:46 PM)

I think they know exactly who they want to fill the remaining slots in this class. And yeah, I'd say one or two of them would be at that level.

David Ching
  (12:47 PM)

Montravius Adams would be one. Reuben Foster is not a five-star with ESPN, but he fits into that group, too.

LOL at DOUGLISVILLE DAWG (Earth)

I think you may be underestimating Nebraska. With a healthy Burkhead, a speedy Abdullah and Martinez, I perceive a much closer game.

David Ching
  (12:48 PM)

It's certainly possible. They just gave up 70 points to an 8-5 team, though. I'm not expecting much from the Huskers.

James (Atlanta)

You think they should have spiked it? Looked like they were going for the back shoulder throw to Mitchell, a call I like in that situation, so I'm ok with it.

David Ching
  (12:50 PM)

Would I have spiked it? Yeah, but I don't think not spiking it was a BAD call. I think playing it aggressively was playing to win and I won't fault that. I think he was going for the back shoulder fade to Mitchell there, but when I watch the replay, it looked to me like the safety might have made a play on that ball anyway.

Casey (Utah)

David, I was really impressed with Georgia in the SEC title game! Do you think Florida could have beat Alabama if they played like they did against FSU since they have the best defense in the SEC and can stop the run?

David Ching
  (12:51 PM)

Maybe. Georgia was able to stay in the game because they hit a bunch of long balls. I think Florida's offense is so one-dimensional that Alabama would have had an easier time with the Gators, but I bet that would have been an entertaining game too.

Randy (Lakeland,Fl.)

Should Georgia be looking for a new DC that can stop the run

David Ching
  (12:52 PM)

I think he's done OK at Georgia so far. Saturday wasn't a great performance after the first 25 minutes or so, but this defense is light years beyond the one he inherited in 2010.

Husker in Atlanta (GPS challenged.)

I will say this, I think Richt is a fine coach. I am unsure as to why I see so much disdain for him. Will this season end some of that for him?

David Ching
  (12:53 PM)

Finishing with a bowl win would help make it a quiet offseason. That and locking up some of the big fish as they close this recruiting class. But I think the people that don't like him are going to not like him until he wins the whole thing.

LifeofReilly (Atlanta)

Why do you think UGA has such difficulty getting OL recruits? Also do you think the fans will have to wait 11 years to get as close to the National Championship Game as we were last Saturday?

David Ching
  (12:55 PM)

It seems to me that they didn't do a very good job evaluating players for a time. But it seems to be getting better. Adding Theus was a big deal in this most recent class and getting Tunsil would be another big addition.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Does Aaron Murray need to shake the Buffalo Bill-Tony Romo label before even considering going pro?

David Ching
  (12:57 PM)

Maybe not before even CONSIDERING it, but I think coming back and playing well against teams like Clemson, South Carolina, LSU and Florida would do a lot for him.

AtlDawg (Atlanta)

How do you see the early matchup of Georgia vs Clemson, and who do you think wins?

David Ching
  (12:58 PM)

WAY too early to predict that. Injuries, suspensions...all kinds of stuff can impact that game. But I'd say the concern for Georgia at this point is that they're losing a ton off this defense and Clemson has a couple of offensive skill players who are going to give them problems.

James (Atlanta)

Your thoughts on the last play? I'm ok with not spiking it with the defense scrambling and Mitchell having one-on-one coverage outside

David Ching
  (12:59 PM)

Yeah like I mentioned a minute ago, I don't think it was that bad of a call. Unconventional maybe. Everybody would be celebrating the decision if it had worked out.

reese (atlanta)

I was impressed with UGA's offensive line, they played better than expected, and are only going to improve.Rambo is a punk, pure and simple...he did not take on a single tackle head to head, talked trash and gave out cheap shots,....good riddance and a tarnish to most of the other dawg players.

David Ching
  (12:59 PM)

A. Me too. B. OK then. I think that's a bit unfair.

David (Athens, ga)

Do you think that the playoff system will be much better than the BCS?

David Ching
  (1:00 PM)

I think a four-game playoff format is insufficient. But once it gets to eight -- and it will -- that will be pretty cool.

BigDawg (Flatwoods Ga)

What's better: 1. Always coming up just short. 2. Winning it all and then falling off the map for ten years. 1 or 2...what say you?

David Ching
  (1:01 PM)

I don't think either of those sounds great. But were I a fan, I'd prefer to always be in the conversation than to spend most falls not even wanting to pay attention to what a bad team is doing.

GADawg (Atlanta)

UGA will have 11 defensive players enrolling early. 3 Safeties2 Corners, 2 JUCO DL, 2 ILB, 2 OLB. Even though they are raw, do you see them filling in for defensive departures. . .and maybe helping out early on in the season?

David Ching
  (1:02 PM)

Absolutely. There aren't many positions on the 2013 defense where the starter is already established. I think they'd love for some of those guys to jump in and help right away -- and I'd bet that several of them will.

jason (nebraska)

if you was to pick 4 teams for playoffs who would they be

David Ching
  (1:04 PM)

That's a fun question Jason. I think the teams I'd be most interested to see play it off would be Alabama, Georgia, Oregon and K-State (or maybe Notre Dame instead of K-State). I'm not all that impressed with Notre Dame.

Johnny Big (Athens, GA)

I think you hit the nail on the head with Grantham - yeah the D isn't lights out and didn't have the depth everybody would have liked to slow Alabama in the 2nd half and stop the run all year, but think of where the D was under Willie Martinez just a couple of years ago with the talent he squandered.

David Ching
  (1:04 PM)

Grantham has been a great addition to Georgia's staff. No doubt about it.

jason (nebraska)

thanks for answering

David Ching
  (1:05 PM)

Sure thing. Thanks for the question.

Tyler (Nashville)

Do you think Charile Strong goes to Tennessee? If so is he a good fit?

David Ching
  (1:06 PM)

Maybe. I like Charlie Strong a lot. He deserves a shot at a big-time job. They made him wait longer than he should have had to wait to get a HC job already. I bet he'd do a good job up there.

David Ching
  (1:06 PM)

All right y'all. Great chat. Thanks for dropping by and keeping me company for an hour.

jason (nebraska)

so do you believe you could leave out stanford and south carolina

David Ching
  (1:07 PM)

Well one more. Yeah I'd leave them out. Would include them in an eight-team format, though.
