Chat with Ted Miller

Ted Miller
  (2:59 PM)

Howdy folks.... welcome. What the heck are we supposed to do on Saturday?

Matt (Los Angeles)

Ted,Do you think SC can get back to a championship level next year?

Ted Miller
  (3:01 PM)

I think USC should be competitive in the South Division, though I think UCLA is a clear favorite and Arizona State could be in the mix. USC has a lot to clean up, starting on defense with a new coordinator. But there is plenty of talent coming back, particularly if WR Robert Woods returns. I'd rate the Trojans over-under on wins at 8 or 9.

Mike Bohn (Boulder, CO)

Should I even consider the names of Petrino or Tressel?

Ted Miller
  (3:02 PM)

No... I think San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre or Fresno State coach Tim DeRuyter would be good picks.

Bryce (SF)

Is there any way for the Pac-12 to overtake the SEC as #1 conference in this upcoming bowl season?

Ted Miller
  (3:02 PM)

Well, if the SEC implodes -- topped by Alabama losing to Notre Dame -- and the Pac-12 goes 8-0 or 9-1. But I don't see that happening.

Chris (LaLaLand)

What's your take on the Sonny Dykes hire? Seen some fans complain, saying his teams play no D. But hey this is the Pac 12.

Ted Miller
  (3:04 PM)

His team played decent defense in 2011, terrible defense in 2012. A big thing for him is getting enough money to hire an A-list coordinator. I'm thinking at least $500,000. As for the hire itself, Dykes is a good choice. I knew when he was at Arizona it was just a matter of time before he got a good job. I think he will be successful.

SSgt Smyth (Afghanistan)

With two QB committments at Airzona how will Coach Rod handle the starting postion for next season.

Ted Miller
  (3:07 PM)

Pretty straight forward: Whoever practices the best will win the job. I think the incoming frosh are longshots, but USC transfer Jesse Scroggins will likely give B.J. Denker a strong challenge.

John (sacramento)

With your crystal ball, which PAC 12 team would you pick as the likeliest to win a bowl game? And lose as well?

Ted Miller
  (3:07 PM)

I think Arizona State beats Navy. I think Washington is the most likely to lose to Boise State.

Geezer (Anchorage)

How do you think the coaching situation will affect Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl?

Ted Miller
  (3:08 PM)

I thought it would be a big problem until Barry Alvarez came back. He'll inspire the Badgers. Stanford better not show up flat. If it does, it will get beat.

Conor (State College)

Who do you have winning the Heisman?

Ted Miller
  (3:09 PM)

Johnny football... But I think the best player in college football is Marqise Lee.

Tim (ATL)

It seems like folks in eugene think helfrich is the man if Chip leaves. But in light of what happened in WI and with barry saying that going after chryst is inappropriate, how nervous should duck fans be that helfrich is gonna leave before Chip, and that they'd miss out on the obvious replacement?

Ted Miller
  (3:11 PM)

Well it seems like all the NFL folks think Kelly is bolting this year, so there may not be much to worry about along the lines of losing Helfrich. Hey, that's the reality of the game. I think Wisky should go after Chryst. The Badgers owe nothing to Pittsburgh. This is a big-boy game. If Wisconsin wants Chryst, there is no "inappropriate."

Chip Kelly (Eugene)

Which city would you prefer to live in...Philly or Cleveland?

Ted Miller
  (3:12 PM)

Philly... got some good buddies there. And I've always thought Philly was underrated.

Jason (Eugene)

What do you think the chances are that the Ducks get sanctions due to the Will Lyles recruiting incident?

Ted Miller
  (3:12 PM)

I think they will get sanctioned but I don't think it will be crippling. Nothing that should chase Kelly out of town or prevent him from continuing a run of BCS bowl games.

marinersblue96 (Bellevue)

Since the NFL season ends so much later than college, does it put a school such as Oregon in a really bad position recruiting wise if the HC jumps in early January?

Ted Miller
  (3:13 PM)

Yes... A college coach leaving for the NFL in mid-January is not a good thing.

Nick (LA)

My gut says that Robert Woods leaves early for the NFL. He's certainly ready. Is there anything that might keep him back in school, though? Especially after a poor showing in 2012 that wasn't his fault.

Ted Miller
  (3:14 PM)

I agree... but Woods might want another shot to boost his draft standing. Just because Barkley hurt his draft standing doesn't mean an extra year will hurt Woods. Manti Te'o is happy he came back, I'd imagine.

Andrew (Thousand Oaks, CA)

I know Morgan Breslin didn't make First Team, but he makes it onto your new Top 25 right?

Ted Miller
  (3:15 PM)

Maybe... his game is not without holes, though.

Warren ((Spokane))

Why Washington most likely to lose their bowl game? To me it looks like Boise is conventional on offense, which is where Wilcox cleans up. UW beat SDSU, BSU lost to SDSU. I honestly think the Dawgs win. Am I crazy?

Ted Miller
  (3:16 PM)

No, you're not crazy... Who do you think is more likely to lose, though? Huskies are the only underdog, per vegas.

Julian (Sunnyvale Trailer Park)

What's the word on Will Sutton as an NFL prospect? Obviously he is too small to be a DT at his current weight. How will that affect his decision to stay or go?

Ted Miller
  (3:18 PM)

I don't know what Sutton's draft prospects are. He is undersized. But he was so productive that he certainly will get a shot. Is he quick enough to play on the outside? I'm a little skeptical of that but I could be wrong. I'm not sure how he gets better by coming back. He was about as good as a guy could be this year.

Jake (Honolulu)

How would you grade the Sonny Dykes hire?

Ted Miller
  (3:20 PM)

B+... Chris Petersen would have been an A. I know it's not a sexy hire, but there are very few negatives with Dykes. And Cal can't afford an A-list coach with a long run of AQ conference success. It couldn't, for example, have lured Bret Bielema away from Wisconsin.

Star L. (SL, UT)

Did the fact that my Utes under-performed this year hurt my chances at being drafted #1?

Ted Miller
  (3:22 PM)

I don't think you'll go No. 1, but I didn't see that happening in any event. I think Star is a first-round pick who will have a long NFL career. And he one day might make the Pro Bowl. But I think an outside pass rusher is going to go first.

JGMAA (NoCal)

Ted, why don't you ever join us in the comments like Kevin? Do we intimidate you?

Ted Miller
  (3:23 PM)

I don't know what you're asking about the comments... but yes you do intimidate me. You guys are scary.

Brian Johnson (Utah)

Whats your grade for me this year

Ted Miller
  (3:24 PM)

C+... it's clear you're learning a bit on the job. But you also had a tough hand with questions on the O-line and at QB.

JD (Alamdea)

Any idea which way Skov, Gardner, and Murphy are leaning on entering the draft?

Ted Miller
  (3:25 PM)

No idea... Stanford has a chance to be really good again next year, so that might tempt them to stay. I think Skov really came on late, so he might be eyeballing the NFL...

Marcus Mariota (Eugene, OR)

Will I be Chip Kelly's first successful NFL quarterback?

Ted Miller
  (3:25 PM)

I see no reason you won't be.

James (WA)

Safe to say offensive stats in the Big12 are way overblown? Safe to say UCLA approaches 85 points against Baylor? Oregon 98 pts vs. Kstate?

Ted Miller
  (3:27 PM)

K-State is pretty good on defense. I'd be surprised if the Ducks get much past 40, I'd guess UCLA should be in the high-40s for Baylor. Curious to see how the Bruins D does against the Baylor offense, which is potent.

Vegas Duck (Las Vegas, NV)

True or False: Oregon is a top 5 pre-season team next year with or without Chip Kelly?

Ted Miller
  (3:27 PM)

Top five with Kelly. Around 10 without him.

Reese (Atlanta)

Why do you think the Pac-12 is perceived as so weak in all other regions of the Country other than the west coast? Is it because of weak defensive performances, or repeated disappointments form the leaders, Oregon and USC?Stanford gets some respect, but they tend to play more of a smashmouth style.

Ted Miller
  (3:28 PM)

Smart people don't think the Pac-12 is weak. It's purely trash talk.

K Whitt (The Hill)

The way I see it, I have at lease 2 more year like this last one before my seat gets hot. Thoughts? C'mon, I beat Bama in the Sugar Bowl!

Ted Miller
  (3:31 PM)

It surprises me hearing folks grumble about Whittingham. The reality is the Utes made a major jump in competition. If Boise State joined the Pac-12, the same thing would happen. Would folks then question Chris Petersen? It's going to take a few years for Utah to look like a top-half Pac-12 team. But, yes, if the Utes have two more losing seasons, I'd say Whittingham's seat would be hot, and justifiably so.

Kevin Hogan (Palo Alto)

How would you rank me compared to other pac-12 QBs going into next year.

Ted Miller
  (3:33 PM)

You've shown a lot of poise, but the next question is whether you can advance from game manager to play making weapon. You're probably behind Mariota and Hundley and beside ASU's Taylor Kelly.

Logan (Kansas City)

Being a Pac-12 blogger and seeing him perform on a more consistant basis how well do you believe that Matt Barkley would perform in the NFL? Is he NFL ready?

Ted Miller
  (3:34 PM)

I think Barkley will be a solid NFL QB. But it's extremely difficult to project. I think less of him today than I did in the preseason. And I never saw him as an Andrew Luck type talent.

Goswami (NYC)

Which QB starts for my Golden Bears next year?

Ted Miller
  (3:36 PM)

I think Zach Kline will prevail. Dykes probably likes the idea of going with a RS FR who can learn the system and play a couple more years.

Edward (Fort Campbell, KY)

Which bowl game is the "must see" bowl of the Pac-12 in your opinion?

Ted Miller
  (3:36 PM)

Fiesta Bowl... top-10 matchup.

Chip K (Eugene (for now))

Why are so many fans angry about the loss this year? Have duck fans become so myopic and naive they fail to see the program for what it is? 4 BCS bowls in a row isn't too bad....

Ted Miller
  (3:37 PM)

Are Ducks fans that angry? Really? That's silly.

Go Greyhounds! (Pullman, WA)

Do you see any changes to the Oregon State coaching staff this off season?

Ted Miller
  (3:38 PM)

I think DC Mark Banker might get a few looks... perhaps USC or California.

Jonathan (Oklahoma City)

With a 7-5 season for the Arizona Wildcats, how much longer will it be before Arizona fields a good defense?

Ted Miller
  (3:38 PM)

It may take a couple of years. In fact, I think the Wildcats take a step back next year without QB Matt Scott & that still questionable defense.

Beavfann (Denver)

Do you have any insights into why the Beavers do not do well in recruiting terms 4 and 5 star guys? I like how Riley can develop guys, but it would be nice to get a couple prospects that come in rated highly.

Ted Miller
  (3:40 PM)

Are there any schools that are comparable to Oregon State in location, history and stadium size that get 4 or 5 star guys? Oregon has taken a step forward in recruiting due to a deeeeeeep pocketed booster, but its fans also complain about recruiting. Beavers, do you want to be Texas, that disappoints with 5 star recruits? Or Oregon State, which turns boys into men?

Todd Graham (Tempe)

With a solid starter in place (Kelly) and a great prospect coming in (Dobbs) should I worry about trying to keep Eubank around?

Ted Miller
  (3:42 PM)

Maybe... but what can you do? You have a QB competition, the guy that wins plays well. If the guy that loses doesn't want to stick around, who can blame him?

David Shaw (Palo Alto)

What positions do I need to be recruiting for this year?

Ted Miller
  (3:42 PM)

Receiver, receiver... D-line. CB.

Edward (Fort Campbell, KY)

Most Duck fan's arent angry. Yes that loss stung, but a 11-1 season and a BCS bowl is still a great consolation prize. We would have loved to win the PAC-12, but no point in being angry over a one loss season.

Ted Miller
  (3:43 PM)

Yes... the right way to think. And, again, there's something to be said that Kelly has still not lost to a bad team. Think of all the choking we see on an annual basis.

Martin (Scottsdale)

Most of the O-line is returning for the Wildcats next year. Does Carey break the 2,000-yard mark in 2013?

Ted Miller
  (3:44 PM)

I think Carey will have a great shot at it, but he'll need some help from the passing game or he'll see a lot of guys in the box.

Engineer Mike (Switzerland)

Ted, quick! Check the rulebook! Isn't there some possible way for ND and AL to both lose the national championship game? I'm so torn in deciding whom to root AGAINST.

Ted Miller
  (3:45 PM)

We were talking about that on an ESPN conference call the other day. Lots of folks root against Notre Dame. But lots of folks don't want the SEC to win a seventh consecutive title. What do you do? Me... I'm excited about the game. I'm just rooting for a game that goes into the fourth quarter.

Anton (Seattle)

Where do u see Washington ranked in the preseason next year?

Ted Miller
  (3:46 PM)

If they win their bowl game, around 15-20th. If they lose, around 25th or unranked.

Jeremy (Honolulu)

Am I the only one who thinks CK leaving for the NFL would be a poor decision? The teams that have slowed his offense are teams with NFL -caliber defensive fronts. I don't see this style of play working at the next level

Ted Miller
  (3:48 PM)

Kelly isn't married to a scheme. That's what folks are missing. What NFL teams most want is as much his CEO skills as anything. Kelly will use his very big brain to adapt to the NFL. But I hope he stays. I'd miss going back and forth with him.

Butch Jones (Behind the Food Cart)

Did I just dodge a bullet by not taking the CU position? I really liked it there, but Bohn and the media seem a little skittish. Is Cincinnati a better position or should I be holding out for Tennessee or Wisconsin?

Ted Miller
  (3:49 PM)

I think you decided to hold out for a better job. Better hope you keep winning with the Bearcats, though.

Brad (San Diego)

Thoughts on Coach Mora's decision not to interview with two SEC schools?

Ted Miller
  (3:49 PM)

I think it's great for UCLA. It shows that Mora wasn't just trying to get back into the game any way possible last year. Now UCLA needs to make sure they keep him happy.

Nick (Wisconsin)

Do you feel Wisconsin's chances of winning the Rose Bowl with Alvarez is better or worse?

Ted Miller
  (3:50 PM)

Than if there were no change? Worse. But Alvarez is the best possible solution to a tough situation. His players will be motivated.

Joseph (St. George)

Taco Bell or Del Taco (Kevin said neither)

Ted Miller
  (3:51 PM)

Taco Bell's new menu designed by Lorena Garcia is pretty tasty. She's legit.

Nick (Wisconsin)

What do you take on Alvarez's comment that he will not use a search committee?

Ted Miller
  (3:52 PM)

good ... search committee's are stupid.... A smart person who knows football can hire a good coach. And if he needs input, he ask for it specifically.

Julian (Sunnyvale Trailer Park)

Do you see the Sun Devils taking another step forward next year with another year with the system? They also got Kelly with more experience and lots of young talent.

Ted Miller
  (3:54 PM)

Yes... my feeling is the Sun Devils are in a nice place. Some holes to fill, particularly if Sutton bolts, but the future looks bright. It seems like he's recruiting well, too. I love the idea of both Arizona schools doing well.

Nick (Wisconsin)

We know Alvarez is only comming back to coach the Rose Bowl and he will not look at Pitt for the head coach. Who do you think are at the top of his list?

Ted Miller
  (3:55 PM)

Wonder if we might hear from Butch Jones... maybe Pat Narduzzi? Not completely up on that opening, to be honest.

GreenandGold Duck (Sacramento)

If the playoffs were to start this year, how do you think Oregon would fare?

Ted Miller
  (3:56 PM)

I think Oregon would win the national championship, particularly if the final game only featured a week or two between the semifinal.

SDZald (San Diego)

Ok so the Ducks win all the games against worst teams. To be considered a great team don't you have to eventually win games against tough teams in big games?

Ted Miller
  (3:58 PM)

To be considered "great," the Ducks need to win a national title. SO yes. But Kelly has plenty of good wins. Are you willing to view the Fiesta Bowl as a game against a "tough team"?

Mike (Anaheim)

Will Todd McNair take down the NCAA?

Ted Miller
  (3:59 PM)

I think he's going to win his case, and that it's going to embarrass the NCAA... I like that it's making real what I've long claimed: The NCAA screwed over USC unfairly and knew it was doing so and did so because it could.

Nick (Wisconsin)

Do you think Tommy Tuberville should be fired after this season for slapping his assistant

Ted Miller
  (3:59 PM)

no...

Krista (Pittsburgh)

Whats your prediction for the New Mexico Bowl with ARizona and NV?

Ted Miller
  (4:00 PM)

points... lots of them...

Jack (Corona)

How do you think my Beavs will do vs the Long Horns?

Ted Miller
  (4:00 PM)

I'm torn... Not ready to make a pick. Slight OSU lean.

Ted Miller
  (4:01 PM)

OK gang... time for me to roll out. Good questions today. Thanks for stopping by.
